Yup I said I'll get when it's on sale for maybe $20 because the budget for the game can't require that price tag. It's like how they priced Lost Sphere and the game before it forgot the name lol. I didn't buy them even though they looked good because those price tags don't fit the situation lol
Jan - I don't imagine a game that looks like a cellphone port is going to fly off the digital shelves at $40 US dollars either. Should retail at $15-20 with the quality of the animations/voice acting etc.
OK, I get it. Square put the game on a small budget and the team did what they could. But how is Square gonna charge $40 for this remake when I got a remake of Shadow of the Colossus right there for the same price? 2 different genres but when there is more love put in one colossi than the whole Mana world, I don't want to hear any excuses. This should be a $20 game at most. I'll wait til it gets down to $5.
That's how I feel about it too. Secret of Mana is a great remake that stays true to the original, but that price tag is a little much for what is being presented.
SE always overprices their catalog titles. Just take a look at their iOS games: the barebones emulated version of IX is over $20, and the awful-looking V and VI ports are both $15, the same price as the comparatively more impressive ports of III and IV which were based on the DS remakes.
That's how handheld games work over console games. doesn't matter if it's the same. PlayStation All-Star Battle Royale was $60 on PS3 and $40 on Vita day one as was alot of games. Vita always had cheaper priced versions of the games. Switch is the only actual handheld to go against that rule by making the excuse that it's a home console when it's infact a handheld that has a TV mode
because shadow of colossus team proly had sony themselves backing/paying them to make it, while these guys probably didnt, also maybe these guys want to bring a new mana game so they probably want as much funds as they can get, they probably will make a switch port too
Congrats John, your wish at the end of the video has came true, Seiken Densetsu 3 (now Trials of Mana) iscoming to the west both as remake and in its original form. Hope DF will be covering it as well when the remake releases!
How dull must you be to not appeciate the artistry that goes into the pixel art of games like Secret of Mana? How about later Mana games like Seiken Densetsu 3 or Legend of Mana? This is a series known for beautiful pixel art.
Reminds me of that mobile remake of Final Fantasy Adventure: Adventures of Mana which ended up getting ported to the Vita. It was pretty underwhelming.
it's the same engine from what I know seeing the graphic style is literally the same. Might be why it has a problem running on Vita lol. Probably wasn't made to run on something with with it's low clock speed nor low ram count. Because graphics wise it's a joke even on Vita
As simple as it is, I love the minimap representation. We get a reminder of that old school look on top of new grahpics. Best of both worlds. Cool stuff.
Great take on it. I just love being able to have it on modern systems with some great new features like hilarious character development scenes at the inn, voice acting for every npc and other gameplay improvements. I'm also so glad that they kept so many little details that I loved about the original. It's a dream come true for me.
I'm surprised the secret of evermore isn't as popular, I loved the different eras to play through and the dog/sniff/ingredients/spells/call beads/leveling my bone to lvl 3 before the dinosaur etc. I loved it :)
The main problem is cost, it is much cheaper to use CDs than cartridges. The game would have to sell for over $100 and the game wouldn't sell well, while Square would lose a lot of money since they had already bought the carts from Nintendo. Then there are other issues, there wouldn't be a way to transfer save data unless they used an enormous password for each cart. If backtracking was possible you would need to enter a password with dozens or possibly hundreds of characters each time you switched carts. The only way to get around this and simplify the process would be to have an adapter holds the save data, that you plug into the SNES and then plug the carts into it but once again this would be very expensive on top of the cost of multiple cartridges.
@@strangevision99 Yep you’re right I really should’ve thought that through better. It’s a shame they couldn’t just make a cart with tons of bank-switched memory though, probably just because of how expensive it would’ve been.
Really good analysis/impressions, I like how in-depth it was while trying to stay as much objective as possible. I never played those original games but it looks pretty intriguing, although the original art style certainly has more appeal. Thanks.
*EDIT:* Wait why is a comment I posted on a video about Final Fantasy VII here, on a video about Secret of Mana? I mean sure, it’s a got a like on it, so I won’t delete it, but I’m confused as to why it’s here. So I started this for the first time today. I never played it back in the day, in fact I wasn’t around back then. But I brought the game recently, and placed the disc into my PS2 because my PS1 is out of action, and turned on my incredibly sexy Sony KV-21X5U Trinitron CRT. The. Game. Looked. Stunning. Like holy crap, it’s amazing! The models look way better than I thought they would, I was expecting them to look awful and pixelated like 3D 240p games often do when upscaled, but no, on the CRT they look great! They are still only okay models, with weird arms most of the time, but they don’t look pixelated at all. And the backgrounds, no dithering is visible even over RGB, and the everything looks awesome and devoid of compression artefacts. Additionally, if you watch the FMV on a modern TV, it looks super compressed and awful. But if you watch it on a CRT like I did, it looks awesome! Very few compression artefacts, and the low resolution doesn’t damage the picture at all, if anything the scanlines make it look better. Honesty the game just looks and feels amazing, I don’t like the combat system and I think it needs more save points (I spent 3 hours looking for one earlier, that’s why I’m posting this at 5AM, I couldn’t turn the PS2 off until I’d saved.) but the game has aged brilliantly, at least when you play it on a CRT. The controls kinda suck too, but pressing select makes things a million times better by giving you a big arrow that points at yourself, and red or green triangles on doors, transitions, and ladders.
Great analysis! And thank you for including ultrawide info there as well! This was one of the biggest upgrades to my PC last year. Hope the trend of 21:9 support will continue on PC and maybe with the next-gen consoles as well!
No, Final Fantasy Adventures for the Gameboy was called Mystic Quest in Europe, while Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the SNES was called Mystic Quest Legend in Europe.
Secret of Mana runs at: 2160p60fps on PS4 Pro 1080p60fps on PS4 544p30fps on PSVITA PSVITA runs at it's native resolution so it looks good and has pretty much the same graphics as PS4/Pro version but lower franerate with some dips below 30fps.
Considering tales of the abyss holds a big place in my heart as one of my favorite JRPGs, the new art style for secret of mana is something I really love.
Awesome! Proper ultrawide support! I love seeing this getting popular. Kingdom come deliverence even gives black bars to the top and bottom to 16:9 users during cutscenes, while perfectly fitting the whole screen on a 21:9 display.
Majority seems disapointed. I am a huge fan of the original, one of my TOP 3 games overall, I have finished it 25 times, I know the game by heart, almost every dialog, I know every HP of all bosses and the cost and name of all equipments. And yes : I do like this remake and I am happy to play it. The only one serious default : more than half of the bosses have been 3D modelised into a ridiculous form. Many of them just looks....small.
AmnesiaGm1 I’m not against the remake at all I just wish they would of put a more high quality engine behind it is all... the Project Octopath Traveler engine would of been perfect for this style of game.
I have found ONE thing which is absolutly unforgivable on this remake. Something which deserves alone that we insult loudly the team who made this : The permanent little menu on the bottom of the screen was optimal, we had every information, they just had to copy it...Instead they changed into a confusing and unlogical menu which takes more space and provide less information, like the charge of the 2 bot, knowing their level of charge is capital to build up a strategy in the middle of the fight. I can't understand such a choice. I will never.
yes, I am speedrunning it now and I target for sub-4 hours, so 25 times of experience is necessary to attempts this project. And I am sure there are some dudes who has made it 100 times.
Your Snes footage was from an emulator and zoomed in (looked nothing like it does played on an original SNES! ). Secret of Mana still looks good even today on the real hardware, espevially on a 100+ hz CRT and RGB Scart cable!
Not surprised how the Vita version runs, considering it uses the native 960x544 mode. It's also far from the worst I've seen on the platform (that honour goes to the port of Jak and Daxter 1 to the system - constant 20FPS with sub-native resolution). I think the style of the remake was partly inspired by A Link Between Worlds on the 3DS, and Square's own ports of the Final Fantasy series to the DS. I don't have any preference one way or the other, both styles look good in my opinion.
If you overclock the vita's cpu to 400mhz and the gpu to 200 mhz, you should be able to go from 25 fps to 30fps. It will not be perfect, but it fixes almost every game capped @30fps.
Oh no. No no no no, XCOM on Vita does not have better graphics. It's one of the ugliest, poorly ported games I've ever seen. A true garbage fire. It's basically unplayable. Should never have seen the light of day.
Surprisingly few outlets have called attention to how similar this remake is to the iOS/Android/Vita remake of Final Fantasy Adventure, titled Adventures of Mana. No doubt this remake has similar roots to the remake of its predecessor. Why they're charging as much as they are for it, I don't know, but I don't hate what i'm seeing here either. Great video as always, John!
This is so visually unappealing, i've never played the original but would rather play that on my SNES mini. I've never played Chrono Trigger or Super Mario RPG either, which one should i play first?
referral madness hey I never said it was a success. I said “Japan still supports it” which they do, “handhelds are big in there” which they are and “a lot of devs are moving to the switch” which they will. I don’t know what triggered you, but those are facts. I’m positive that, as long as there are no exclusivity contracts, a majority of games on the vita will come to the switch
referral madness Calm down. You got triggered over nothing. Where did @CHRISTIAN say the Vita was a success? You are carrying baggage from a different conversation you probably had with someone, and placing it on him.
I'm really enjoying this remake. Sure, it could have benefited from having World of Final Fantasy level visuals, but I don't mind PS2 quality visuals and honestly find them refreshing in this day of overblown budgets and microtransactions. Quaint is a good description for this game, I think.
It's an art style, not something you'd enhance with. What they were going for was the chibi look and the style of Claymation art found in the original instruction booklet.
I love this channel, great work! I've played little of the original and now I have it on my SNES mini, so I guess I'll be finishing it there sometime. I hoped this remake was better, but I guess I'll stick with the original.
Well there was a mana game on ps2 and it looks far better than this. I don't know why DF didnt bring it up as a comparison or bring up the other snes games for that matter. I guess that would show up how ugly this remake is
I dislike the fact that it was a lazy remake for a great game (never did finish it), and i would take the pixel art over this one any day also, why the hell do the characters not speak/have talking animation, what is this ps1 days Quick side note, they should remake Seiken Densetsu 3, imo that game was way better and innovative compare to Sercet of Mana
I would absolutely love to see that, but i'm scared for a Seiken Densetsu 3 remake if it's anything like this. That game is so beautiful on the Super Famicom and deserves a lot more attention to detail than this remake got, especially since it'll be a lot of people's first time playing it.
It's funny to think that about 20 years ago. I made TI83 calculator RPG game and within the cut scenes i made had talking animations. I had subroutine corresponding with string of text to match the dialog. And we don't even get that from this game.
@DigitalFoundry Honestly, I think this style of a remake is good. I never actually played the SNES version, and this version on the PS4 is a great way for me to place this. The gameplay and story hasn't changed, but all they did was update the technical aspects to modernize the game and the fact that it has Japanese and English voice option, and the option to swap between original music and the remade ones. Honestly, I wouldn't mind if Square-Enix does more of this style of remake for other games like: - Chrono Trigger - Chrono Cross - Parasite Eve - Parasite Eve 2 - Parasite Eve 3 - Vagrant Story - Xenogears - Brave Fencer Musashi Oh and I wouldn't mind if they remade Seiken Densetsu 1 and 3 as well on the PS4 in this same style.
You sure as hell never did play the orginal, because you saying the gameplay hasn't changed shows it. This version plays A LOT a hell of a lot faster, the level ups give you mp back and the shortcuts are also new. Give the old one a try after you done with that as tell me that it plays the same way, because you will not be able to do that.
Grab your vita and look what you think of the SD 1 remake Adventures of mana, or alternatively grab a gba and play the better version of that Sword Of Mana. SD 3 would be great, though i agree.
As always i think 2D games have to be remade in 2D, like Final fantasy IV on PSP, that is a proper remake of a 2D game! Still, i like this one, it's not as bad as we see on screens or vídeos, but i always prefer 2D remake of a 2D game.
Rose tinted specs are amazing, aren't they! I don't remember any of the issues with the snes version when I played it back in the day. Just happy memories of an amazing game!
I have owned the original Secret of Mana on the SNES, and even though i owned it once i still have a hard time looking at those cartoon graphics on the remake, now don't get me wrong, it is pretty and all that, But, i have come to a state where i am mostly liking / loving the asthaetics of the old game such as the beautiful pixel art. I also hope Square Enix will at one time release the Japanese only collection... Great video as always DF :)
John Laden I think it's pretty nice. I might even prefer it over the original. The characters not having talking animations seems a little odd but it doesn't bother me.
John Laden nawh it the models look like the character art and the kept the color pallete. I like it overall and it's much easier to look at. My snes looks like garbage on my 75 inch tv and I'm just glad to have a new version to be able to play without having my eyes bleed. I understand those with higher expectations but I just play it with voice turned off and original soundtrack on and I'm enjoying it.
Yes, voice off improves things quite a bit. My only complaint so far is I wish the ring would stop defaulting when I back out of a menu, it should remember which icon I was on.
The character models are nice, the backgrounds are...OK, they're not bad, they're a lot better than the awful mobile/DS Final Fantasy remakes that people say it looks like (it doesn't) What gets me is the menus and fonts and whatnot. Thats what makes it look cheap.
Seriously....I love this. Was put off by the childish art style at first, but after watching some let's plays I sure want to play this. It's gorgeous and still a great game made compatible with today's generation.
Music and visuals, yep. The gameplay here is massively improved. Its a shame that we didn't get a visual toggle as well, it would've been the perfect complete version of this game if they had done that.
epi1337 I think the team started the remake before the switch was announced. That being said there isn't an xbox version either, which could be due to Sony purchasing exclusivity rights, but that doesn't make sense since it's coming out on pc.
They took out the mode 7 overview of the cannon travel... I loved that as a kid because you could see places that you haven't been yet. The vast world waiting to be explored. This was a lazy cash grab, but if it gets us talking about SoM than that's the silver lining.
As a huge Secret of Mana fan I can't wait to play this. I feel like it needed a little more time to improve a few things but it doesn't look bat AT ALL. Y'all better take off your nostalgia googles and stop being picky, if you don't wanna play it then ignore it and don't ruin it for other people.
They still havent translated SD3 and there likely wont be any western version without the translation. SE likely wont foot the bill either, but maybe Nintendo will.
I hate You Theyre looking into it. Im guessing Square Enix was one of the many Japanese studios that believed Switch was gonna bomb so didn't bother with much support, so even no brainers like this got left behind. Japanese devs are going all in on PS4, though right now they see Switch being successful so putting in support where they can.
Well to be fair the mobile games that people are referencing style wise are also Square published games. So they aren't intentionally copying it. It's their style they already made regular with their previous releases of some of the older Final Fantasy titles with chibi like bodies and all. I'm not sure why they stick with it. Maybe the sales are better than anyone knows on mobile. Most people I know prefer the rereleases of those on the gameboy/DS systems since they used the pixel art mostly and then improved the experience other ways. Granted I haven't played this. From the looks, I think I would rather replay the older version and especially if they cleaned up a few of the more annoying things with it.
That's the thing! This looks VERY similar to the mobile and Vita remake of the previous game, Adventures of Mana. Makes me wonder if it started development as a mobile game, but they decided to aim a little higher. (Worth mentioning that there's already a mobile version of Secret of Mana that's more like the original.)
I can’t believe we went from this to the Trials of Mana remake in a couple of years. One looks like a PS2 game and the other is on par with Dragon Quest XI on PS4 visually. I hope we get a DF of that game when it comes out next month on PS4, Switch and PC.
I strongly disliked the original back in the day, though it was beautiful and had great sound. I finished it several times throughout the years, yet always thought it has so many flaws. The remake though feels great better so far and looks nice as well, if you can cope with the style.
Basically I finished it on my own, then several times throughout the years with people who wanted to play it with me. Never liked it, never had a super good time. Remake though... having fun so far!
i agree with you 100%. i tried playing the snes classic version a week before and couldn't get past the start, too old and clunky and riddled with problems. nostalgia for sure clouds people's judgments when condemning this remake.
It's not a great game, the most overhyped Snes game imo, all it does is literally make you continuously wait before you can atk, it's ridiculous. Beyond Oasis, Terranigma and Lttp are all 16-bit top down adventure games that are alot more fun to play. The sequel to this Seiken Densetsu 3 is supposedly alot better but wasn't released in the west.
The reason my Wii is still hooked up to my TV is I have Chrono Trigger, Final Fantasy III, and Secret of Mana on it. The 2D pixel art of the 16-bit era is timeless, and has a charm that is difficult to match with 3D graphics.
The new artstyle is nothing but distasteful, soulless and flatout repugnant. None of the originals charm has been carried over unfortunately. This game deserves to be remade by someone who can translate the SNES original warm, cozy, lush and inviting feel into a graphic style that does it justice and suites it better.
This remake only exists because the similarly styled Adventures of Mana remake for mobile and Vita was successful enough on Vita to warrant an equivalent undertaking. So it was likely created as a mobile and Vita game, then dropped for mobile and hastily moved to PS4 + PC, with remaining resources being spent on optimization for those platforms. You essentially have a port of a Vita game which was compromised in order to facilitate it's own port to PS4 + PC. The alternative would have essentially been a complete redevelopment and subsequent cancellation of the original Adventures of Mana-style production... which was likely nearly completed and served as the catalyst for creating a remake in the first place. Kind of a paradox.
I really want Sony to give another portable PlayStation a shot, but unless it's compatible with PS4 games or something, I don't know if they'll be willing to take that risk, especially now that they're going up against the Switch, which is basically everything the Vita should have been.
DeToNaToR The Vita was a failure, why would they update the hardware. Maybe a new handheld entirely would make sense but they wouldn’t call it VITA and they would have to start from scratch to convince people to actually buy it. A true hybrid console like Switch might convince people to actually buy it.
DeToNaToR unfortunately Sony will definitely not be using Nvidia hardware anytime soon since Nintendo has partnered with them for their future projects so they likely have a contract.
I have the Vita version and it's great. It's just like the original. I prefer the original, but I'm happy with what they did with this one. Some people will cry about anything.
I think it has some charm to it. It reminds me of the mid PS1 era aesthetically (although obviously, with a much higher resolution and cleaner textures).
I will never get why people liked this game so much. Its mediocre at best. With the SNES Classic, i got to play 4 games for the first time: Super Punch Out, Star Fox 2, Super Castlevania IV and Secret of Mana. I loved the other three, even after 25 years, never having played them before. This game was a disappointment. Nostalgia glasses. I can name 10 other RPGs I'd replace this game with on the SNES Classic.
Yeah if I told my friend who has never heard of Secret of Mana about this game and said it was just a PS2 game running with a higher resolution on PS4 he would totally believe me.
"And it's not TOO bad..." pretty much summed up my opinion of the remake. Although on PS4 I am experiencing tons of crashes (at least 7 so far) and a fun bug where the spell MP drain reacts as if every enemy is undead and drains all my remaining mp 100% of the time regardless of what enemy I try to use it on. Fun times.
Gamer Logic: Legend of Zelda (a Link to the Past) - "This game is a classic." Legend of Zelda (a Link Between Worlds) 240p/30fps - "An Amazing Return to top Down Hyrule, the Visuals are Amazing!" Secret of Mana - "This game is a classic." Secret of Mana Remake 4K/60fps - "OMG, the original is so much better! This game sucks."
Resolution and framerate are not the only things that determine whether a game is good, or even whether a game has good graphics. The SoM remake may run at a higher resolution, but the lighting isn't anywhere near as good as LBW. Mostly because there is no lighting. Everything is just flat textures with no shading to speak of, and it doesn't even use basic techniques like normal mapping or specular maps. And I don't think LBW is a particularly impressive game, but it definitely looks better than this. Also, LBW runs at 60fps, not 30. If you're gonna whine about people not caring about framerates as much as you, at least bother to get the facts right.
You didn't notice how similar Past was to World? It pretty much felt like a remake most of the time. That aside, I was pointing out that both games were on Snes, both classics, yet Between Worlds gets showered with praise despite its limitations. Meanwhile Secret of Mana gets full blunt criticism for its graphics when it is vastly superior to what Nintendo has been putting out on 3DS.
1. The 3DS is significantly weaker than the PS4 and even the Vita. Therefore, you need to adjust your expectations of what qualifies as "graphically impressive." LBW is by no means the best-looking 3DS game, but it does look good for the hardware. 2. People are upset about SoM because the PS4 is capable of significantly more than this. This is the same console that gave us Horizon last year, and the SotC remake just a few weeks ago. And even if you wanna limit the discussion to 4K60 Pro games, then there still are plenty of games that look way better than this. 3. I'd still argue that LBW is better-looking than the SoM remake. LBW makes use of some nice shader effects and utilizes modern techniques like normal mapping. Again, far from the best-looking 3DS game, but the devs did at least try to use the system's capabilities. SoM just uses flat textures for everything, and there isn't even any real lighting going on. The only advantage it has over LBW is texture resolution and having real-time shadows under the characters, which isn't really enough when you consider just how much more powerful the PS4 is. 4. You still lied about LBW's framerate.
Maybe it's because I never played the original (or really the SNES at all), but to me, this looks incredibly faithful to the original art style and charm? This looks to me like one of the closest faithful remakes I've ever seen. The negativity surrounding this game honestly baffles me. I'm kind of concluded that maybe the game was just not all that good to begin with, and people are only now realizing with the remake, blaming it on other things instead.
The Remake isnt bad but I feel like 40€ is a bit much to ask for it to be honest
Went to Steam to check it out after the video, and was rather shocked to see the price tag. At 15 $/€ I would have bought it.
Yup I said I'll get when it's on sale for maybe $20 because the budget for the game can't require that price tag. It's like how they priced Lost Sphere and the game before it forgot the name lol. I didn't buy them even though they looked good because those price tags don't fit the situation lol
TEF Livin'IT you mean I am Setsuna?
Defeqel you could have ordered it through GMG for $30 USD, which is the cheapest you could have gotten it at launch
Jonlyjo it's sold for 20 bucks in the UK for ps4
Seems like it was made for ipad/iPhone but got ported to ps4 for more money
XGAD idk really, I thought of that as well, but the poor performance on the vita made it seem like that wasn't the case
Seems it's running on a phone engine, which is why it has issues on the Vita, when the Vita has run better looking games.
The vita is definitely capable of much more
The original is a much nicer looking game.
And the sequel is even better on the snes
I still prefer the charme of the original.
Yep. and 40€ (in Germany) for a bad remake isn't a real seller here...... I'm Happy there are emulators today.
The original looks much better anyway.
Bauernkind 85 yup. Pixel perfect Emulation Looks way better
I still prefer Secret of Evermore
Even dumber is the Vita version is $10 less. Isn’t it the same as the PS4 version?
Going from gorgeous pixelart to bland, generic 3D remake.. looks like a great iPhone remake
Jaymz X "gorgeous"
kalkampanaros kid, in the past there wasn't a thing called 4k in gaming, so the pixelated graphics are still nice and beautiful.
Mojtaba Mortada No they aren't anymore sorry.
kalkampanaros I disagree
Cleve Crudgington
You're right
Did you ever play Sword of Mana on the GBA? That was kind of a remake of the first game too.
AlucardsQuest Honestly, my personal favorite of the series. Even over SD3. Not without its flaws, of course, but I just love how it plays.
Nothing can beat those beautifull handcrafted sprites ;-)
Well except for the sprite for going up and down stairs
So much love for this channel. You may be the first patreon i support as I enjoy all of your videos.
Ok... I'll stick to the original then
As simple as it is, I love the minimap representation. We get a reminder of that old school look on top of new grahpics. Best of both worlds.
Cool stuff.
I have this game. The textures are very low res, there are no graphics options, fullscreen cuts off your health bar. Runs fine. 10/10
This is a prime example of how PCs are holding consoles back.
Quit trolling Clarence or go educate your self on system specs.
Fullscreen doesn't cut off health bars on my PC.
Great take on it. I just love being able to have it on modern systems with some great new features like hilarious character development scenes at the inn, voice acting for every npc and other gameplay improvements. I'm also so glad that they kept so many little details that I loved about the original. It's a dream come true for me.
wow, loading screen. that what i expected from a rivisitation of a game. WAITING TO PLAY.
Kudos for using Soukaigi songs on the video! Best OST ever.
I'm surprised the secret of evermore isn't as popular, I loved the different eras to play through and the dog/sniff/ingredients/spells/call beads/leveling my bone to lvl 3 before the dinosaur etc. I loved it :)
Michael A J It's not as popular because it's shit
moralapostel Hot take
Such a better game.
I wholey agree with this. It had its shortcomings (like all SNES games at the time), but was unique in its own right and deserves some recognition.
Michael A J evermore so much better.
If storage space was such a concern, why didn’t they string the game out over multiple cartridges like PS1 games did with discs?
SNES Version > PS4/Vita Version
FireFly nope..
TomOfAllTrades91 The SNES Version looks far better than this “3D” Shit.
True! Plus, All Originals are Better than Remakes
Resident Evil says nop
PS4>psvita>SNES
Really good analysis/impressions, I like how in-depth it was while trying to stay as much objective as possible. I never played those original games but it looks pretty intriguing, although the original art style certainly has more appeal. Thanks.
Starting playing this on the snes mini, by god does the Remake look ugly in comparison.
Gremlech nope
It does indeed looks like a step down from the snes. It look very generic and appealing to casuals that never played the original games

The controls kinda suck too, but pressing select makes things a million times better by giving you a big arrow that points at yourself, and red or green triangles on doors, transitions, and ladders.
the original looks better...
Great analysis! And thank you for including ultrawide info there as well! This was one of the biggest upgrades to my PC last year. Hope the trend of 21:9 support will continue on PC and maybe with the next-gen consoles as well!
The gameboy game was called mystic quest on my continent.
regenbogenjohnny Different game, that was an entry level one, no?
No, Final Fantasy Adventures for the Gameboy was called Mystic Quest in Europe, while Final Fantasy Mystic Quest for the SNES was called Mystic Quest Legend in Europe.
Yes I completed the remake of Secret of Mana, PS4 version but I played it on the PS5. I enjoyed it, but I've played jrpgs I've enjoyed alot more.
Secret of Mana runs at:
2160p60fps on PS4 Pro
1080p60fps on PS4
544p30fps on PSVITA
PSVITA runs at it's native resolution so it looks good and has pretty much the same graphics as PS4/Pro version but lower franerate with some dips below 30fps.
thanks for summing up the vid in five seconds :D
Unlocked FPS on PSVITA*
All I heard was get snes classic to get best version
Considering tales of the abyss holds a big place in my heart as one of my favorite JRPGs, the new art style for secret of mana is something I really love.
As soon as I saw the loading screen in place of the cannon zoom yeah... I'm out. Lazy.
The gamers which actually play it seem quite happy with it.
I will never.
>.> 25 times for real
yes, I am speedrunning it now and I target for sub-4 hours, so 25 times of experience is necessary to attempts this project.
Never played the game because I wasn't around back then yet. I'd like to try it as I've heard a lot about it, though 40€ for this is waay too much.
Get a port of the SNES version then. Better value for money in my opinion
Hugo Go, go gadget emulator!!
I love you guys. Thanks so much for all the work.
AlexNitro44 jak 2 and 3 run worse....
David Restrepo
Little bit better
AlexNitro44
Well PlayStation All-stars also runs at 960x544 and with a full locked 60fps...
SalveMonesvol And what about the CPU and GPU temp?
I always enjoy This kind of videos... once again good showing john.
You think this is bad? Try XCOM on the Vita. That is true horror.
Oh no. No no no no, XCOM on Vita does not have better graphics. It's one of the ugliest, poorly ported games I've ever seen. A true garbage fire. It's basically unplayable. Should never have seen the light of day.
Hahaha glad to hear you agree. You guys should do a video of it just for the Lols. Its truly a disaster that i still cant believe was released.
That would be fun because, yeah, it's an insult to XCOM - which is a game I'm a huge fan of.
HAPPY 10TH BIRTHDAY OF YOUR CHANNEL!
I love Digital Foundry!
I'd love to hear more audio comparisons for videos like this (and really just more audio analysis in general on Digital Foundry).
No switch version though? Would seem logical since the first one was on the SNES.
TMC Productions It wasn't.
8BitGamer4life um...yes it was. I remember when it came out. Calling yourself 8bitgamer, I would assume you would know these things, I guess not.
BREAKING: The first third party game running at native 4k on the Pro is a PS Vita game!
Daniel Martins Pereira Rodrigues um this is not the first third party title running at native 4k on the ps4 pro
Sonic Mania was 4K IIRC.
Sonic Mania, Sine Mora EX, Diablo III.
SNES VS PS4 who has better graphics
This is so visually unappealing, i've never played the original but would rather play that on my SNES mini. I've never played Chrono Trigger or Super Mario RPG either, which one should i play first?
Rayza NC Honestly you can’t go wrong starting with either rpg they are both classics.
Rayza NC
Both of those games are great. One warning though: Prepare to play many hours of one of the best games ever. Enjoy!
Chrono Trigger must be first
Mario rpg, it was awesome.
Tabletop mode
Dont you mean is still awesome not was
I appreciate the fact that you indicated support for high refresh rate monitors on PC :)
They still make games for the vita? I thought it was dead
Tbh I forgot it existed until now
Joshua Minke Japan still supports it since handhelds are big there. Most of them are moving to the switch now though
referral madness hey I never said it was a success.
You are carrying baggage from a different conversation you probably had with someone, and placing it on him.
referral madness
People only buy Nintendo handhelds yet 80 million psp sales 🤔
Dickyboy 23 I had a PSP and a Vita. The only reason why me and my friends bought a PSP was to hack it.
awesome digital, props for doing this.
Was planning to buy it but not for $40. Should have been $20, and at most, $30.
wait for a steam summer sail than buy it than that's what i am going to do.i will be buying secrets of mana than
@@supersaiyaman11589 Bought it for $20 last Christmas when it was on sale.
@@peace4myheart that's good too here. hoprfully in the steam summer sail i can get it for the same price
I'm really enjoying this remake. Sure, it could have benefited from having World of Final Fantasy level visuals, but I don't mind PS2 quality visuals and honestly find them refreshing in this day of overblown budgets and microtransactions. Quaint is a good description for this game, I think.
This game is better on the Switch.
I wasn't expecting for ultrawide support.
Well done Square!
Well, so they could ditch the vita and enhance the visuals more for PS4 and PC.
Yes Vita holds back games.
Somehow, I don’t think the bland look has anything to do with the vita
It's an art style, not something you'd enhance with. What they were going for was the chibi look and the style of Claymation art found in the original instruction booklet.
I love this channel, great work! I've played little of the original and now I have it on my SNES mini, so I guess I'll be finishing it there sometime. I hoped this remake was better, but I guess I'll stick with the original.
Legit looks like a ps2 game lol
mark grayson it looks like the ff remakes on android
A graphically mediocre PS2 game at that. Like FFX for example looks way better.
mark grayson *PS1
Well there was a mana game on ps2 and it looks far better than this. I don't know why DF didnt bring it up as a comparison or bring up the other snes games for that matter. I guess that would show up how ugly this remake is
OwtDaftUK this looks much better than ffx on ps2
The cover art pleases me! A sublime view of the fantasy nature of the game, it fits perfectly.
if you have a hacked psvita, you can actually overclock it to get somewhat better performance.
xyz2theb True, but that would come at a price with battery life and temperature.
No, you can't do that. Only 3.60 is available and an exploit for 3.67 (which the game needs to run) isn't coming out until the end of the year
Great video John, as always.
I dislike the fact that it was a lazy remake for a great game (never did finish it), and i would take the pixel art over this one any day also, why the hell do the characters not speak/have talking animation, what is this ps1 days
Quick side note, they should remake Seiken Densetsu 3, imo that game was way better and innovative compare to Sercet of Mana
H Koizumi yeah and for $40, you think they would have added it in
LazyFox Sangel Even some PSX games have mouth animations.
@DigitalFoundry
Honestly, I think this style of a remake is good. I never actually played the SNES version, and this version on the PS4 is a great way for me to place this.
The gameplay and story hasn't changed, but all they did was update the technical aspects to modernize the game and the fact that it has Japanese and English voice option, and the option to swap between original music and the remade ones.
Honestly, I wouldn't mind if Square-Enix does more of this style of remake for other games like:
- Chrono Trigger
- Chrono Cross
- Parasite Eve
- Parasite Eve 2
- Parasite Eve 3
- Vagrant Story
- Xenogears
- Brave Fencer Musashi
Oh and I wouldn't mind if they remade Seiken Densetsu 1 and 3 as well on the PS4 in this same style.
Who else thinks this game should come to the Switch?
Charlie Ward I do!
please no, just localize secret of mana collection instead
Naaa switch dont need this
The Switch deserves better.
Yeah with 10 minutes battery. And battery life issue. I try doom 4 on switch its make my console hot
Feels like I’m the only person who doesn’t mind this art style. 😅
Looks cute to me
The character models are nice, the backgrounds are...OK, they're not bad, they're a lot better than the awful mobile/DS Final Fantasy remakes that people say it looks like (it doesn't)
What gets me is the menus and fonts and whatnot. Thats what makes it look cheap.
Seriously....I love this. Was put off by the childish art style at first, but after watching some let's plays I sure want to play this. It's gorgeous and still a great game made compatible with today's generation.
Where is bayo 2 complete analysis?
Giancarlo R it's up, you just gotta search for it.
Remember to upload a similar video for Trials of Mana on PS4, PS4 Pro, PC, and Switch.
The original was better than this.
Gage BlackW23 in terms of visuals? ok. in terms of literally everything else? not even close
Gage BlackW23 not really
No it wasn't, except for style but that is subjective.
It is literally the same game. lol
Music and visuals, yep. The gameplay here is massively improved.
Its a shame that we didn't get a visual toggle as well, it would've been the perfect complete version of this game if they had done that.
When tech analysis turned into one of the best reviews for the game
Why is it on Vita but not on the Switch, that's really strange.
epi1337 I think the team started the remake before the switch was announced. That being said there isn't an xbox version either, which could be due to Sony purchasing exclusivity rights, but that doesn't make sense since it's coming out on pc.
Maybe they have console exclusivity.
If Sony did make this a console exclusive for them, good. The Switch doesn't deserve half-assed remakes like this one.
They took out the mode 7 overview of the cannon travel... I loved that as a kid because you could see places that you haven't been yet. The vast world waiting to be explored. This was a lazy cash grab, but if it gets us talking about SoM than that's the silver lining.
Love this game. (the SNES version I mean)
Perfect game for Nintendo Switch!!
Brilliant video; you were factual yet balanced in your views. 10/10 =)
It lost its charm with this. Sad that NA never got the switch port of the trilogy
Aversa [SoulRave] So true.
Aversa [SoulRave] sad that the west didn't get it at all. Na isn't the only region there is
They still havent translated SD3 and there likely wont be any western version without the translation. SE likely wont foot the bill either, but maybe Nintendo will.
Aversa [SoulRave] yeah, for it made for Nintendo I'm surprised that the switch didn't get any love with this game. Odd.
The HUD elements on those ultra-wide PC clips are all stretched horizontally, and that would drive me insane over a full playthrough.
Fun fact: the vita is also getting attack on titan 2!
Doesn't matter as Vita is dead.
Well the switch is getting it too so who cares about the vita version
That version is not coming to the west though.
Skits4You 146
It will probably look and run like arse... The others will be slightly better because Koei Tecmo are incompetent.
The real draw this year is going to be 13 Sentinels from Vanillaware, Persona 3 & 5 Dancing, and Catherine Full Body.
Great observation upon the remake and the original one! Just finished the remake. I like it very much!
I strongly disliked the original back in the day, though it was beautiful and had great sound. I finished it several times throughout the years, yet always thought it has so many flaws.
The remake though feels great better so far and looks nice as well, if you can cope with the style.
Strongly disliked - finished it several times!? I think I see your point, but a bit of a wierd way to formulate it lol.
Retro Soul 3 is a lot better, yes.
Legend of Mana theme at the last 2 minutes, sublime!
PS4 Pro was a rushed mistake.
Still has more games than the X ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
CK TV Sad PC has even more Games better controllers and better graphics with cheaper prices :(
TheBlind Senpai All multiplatforms games
Snes 》》》》everything else

J Riibz Model Prime switch? Yea no thanks. No games, i got BOTW for my wii u, thats all it offers besides Mario. My op stands
Aheeem I'm sorry, but you must not have seen the Switch's library in the past year.
Archanid5 right, because there isnt one
Still confused as to why this isn't on Switch.
Because the original version was on the compilation game on Nintendo Switch called "Collection of Mana'.
PS Vita definitely needs a hardware upgrade. A cut down version (a full version for Nintendo SWITCH) NVIDIA Xavier would do the job done!
I really want Sony to give another portable PlayStation a shot, but unless it's compatible with PS4 games or something, I don't know if they'll be willing to take that risk, especially now that they're going up against the Switch, which is basically everything the Vita should have been.
Sony is smart and realize handhelds are dead. Get a switch.
DeToNaToR The Vita was a failure, why would they update the hardware. Maybe a new handheld entirely would make sense but they wouldn’t call it VITA and they would have to start from scratch to convince people to actually buy it. A true hybrid console like Switch might convince people to actually buy it.
GameZard “handhelds are dead”
*meanwhile Switch is selling by the truckload*
Sony should make a hybrid handheld PS4 like the switch.
Best version: SNES. Suck it Sony lol. Jk idgaf
I'm of the opinion that the sequel is far more superior. I could never this game but I've completed the sequel at least 4 times.
K
Yeah if I told my friend who has never heard of Secret of Mana about this game and said it was just a PS2 game running with a higher resolution on PS4 he would totally believe me.
A tru 4K on a Xbo.................
Nope!!
Divah Engine i have a Xbox One X. Still play this on my SNES no need to buy it again on another platform
Fun times.
Gamer Logic:
Legend of Zelda (a Link to the Past) - "This game is a classic."
Legend of Zelda (a Link Between Worlds) 240p/30fps - "An Amazing Return to top Down Hyrule, the Visuals are Amazing!"
Secret of Mana - "This game is a classic."
Secret of Mana Remake 4K/60fps - "OMG, the original is so much better! This game sucks."
Because one is a new game for underpowered hardware. One is for current gen systems and pc being marketed as the definitive version
Link Between Worlds runs at 60 FPS, even with 3D enabled.
Maybe it's because I never played the original (or really the SNES at all), but to me, this looks incredibly faithful to the original art style and charm? This looks to me like one of the closest faithful remakes I've ever seen.
