I've largely been suffering in silence even though I refuse to let it get me down. It helps a lot to know someone like yourself who seems to have it all together is also human, you could have kept it to yourself but you chose to share so thank you!
I have had mental health issues most of my life. Exactly like you say.. constant worrying…did I tighten that fitting….will I flood the house……really tough. It’s been so bad I physically couldn’t go into a job. I obviously talk about it and I am on medication from my GP. It’s great being a self employed plumber but you need to talk and get help for any mental health problems. It’s not weakness asking for help!!! Keep the videos coming PB !

Only a diy’er but like to watch different trades at work. Particularly like the section on mental well-being, so important for people to talk about it and realise you’re not the only one going through the same struggles. The story about falling through a ceiling, we all can become distracted for a multitude of reasons, resulting in an accident. I put my foot through a ceiling when replacing the bathroom floor, (crappy squeaky weyroc replaced with ply) that was a shock. My foot just slipped off the joist, lack of concentration for a second, that’s all it took. It was a lesson I’ve learnt, fortunately not a lot of damage, thankfully not an expensive lesson. I am 39 and i am a plumber,my first panic attack of my life was last year ago...i thought i was dying...i went to the doctors,i went to 3 Cardiologists in 6 months cause i thought i had heart problem,all the doctors said the same,you have anxiety problem....then i went to a psychologist,we talked adn talked,and from then everyday i am trying to live with this thing.It is difficult but i try my best everyday. If someone read this,you are not alone,and you can get help.
Im an Ideal engineer and the Boiler you are working on is the isar mk3 with the brass hydraulics, the square thick o-rings are for the isar mk1 with the composite hydraulics where the plate sits facing downward, i cannot believe that you got them to fit and not leak, but i would go back and change them if i was you, i can give you the right part numbers if you would like?
The ones we look after after are all fine but I go to plenty of warranty calls that have been so called “serviced” and have gotten pretty shit up, especially if they are on a main busy road where the air particulates are pretty bad, but if they are cleaned every year like you have done you won’t have a problem.
@@kevincranfield5235 I had Ideal engineers on an extended warranty. Maybe just my luck but I knew more than them. They ended up causing an even bigger leak from the diverter leaving the boiler off over Christmas. When the next guy came in January he made up a lie about the gas valve being dangerous and condemned the boiler. Not impressed. The impression I got was that the diverter on the Isar was a PITA to change. The first guy had spent hours just changing the seals. So I figured the next guy didn't even want to bother so made up some BS to get out of it.
@@PBPlumber It’s a different kind of plumbing to what Pb does more first and second fix for extensions and occasionally doing combi swaps and replacing heating systems ive been working for a company since about just after Xmas and I’ve just started collecting a few tools it’s the best thing I’ve ever done I love every day I’m 16 and this is what I want to do as my career just love learning. Keep up the quality vids pb.
Good to see the logic being serviced properly , visit plenty of these under warranty that have been ‘ serviced ‘ every year .. the washers for the plate are due to to different versions of that model, use the serial number prefix to identify which parts. Well done getting them to fit and not leak 🤪
I don't know why I got this video recommended but I enjoyed it. It had technical information way beyond my understanding but it was interesting and informative. You also did a good job on the mental health issues you've faced, and the fact that simply telling people enables others to acknowledge [and hopefully seek help] the problems they are experiencing re mental health. The Gas Expert was an unexpected bonus. I love it when someone admits to effing up [even if the house was effed up to start with], and am so glad that he was not seriously injured when he fell.
Been doing this 10 years, as a change of career at 30, I thought all these doubts/second guessing/anxiety/things randomly and regularly going to shit despite my best efforts were all unique to me and just down to me being shit🤣 I feel little bit bad for feeling better someone else with more experience goes through it if that makes sense.
Great video yet again. Talking about stressing in your videos deffo seems to help a lot of people and me. Just you and others talking about it makes you know your not the only one and helps relieve soon of the worry. Young and old are all in it together. Just because they say that they don’t stress about that thing that stresses you doesn’t make it ok. But on here we can see and hear stories that opens us up to other people’s problems. Pete: In Canada - last year was horrific. We run 6 vans and 4 licensed plumbers & 2 refrigeration techs (Air Conditioning). We had a 6 week lay-off. I felt horrible. My job is to provide work for 10 families. I'm worried that we won't have enough work. My mental health does take a hit and I worry too much. Find me pacing in the living room at 4:00AM. But, my Christian faith helps me to work through and find a way to put my trust in God. Love watching your videos. We're doing more combi boilers so it's good to see some of the service issues we will have in future. Take care - Allan.

I can’t really stop as I’m taking my son through his apprenticeship (I get him to watch your videos to help with the education and an independent perspective. Mate you hit the nail on head!!! Iv been through that situation plenty of times, I once worked in grandmas house changed the toilet inlet valve I checked it before I left and was working fine. At around 11:45pm I started panicking thinking it could be leaking. I then went back with the excuse I left my drill upstairs in the bathroom went upstairs checked it and it was fine.
Little trick I was taught as a young sparks was always hammer in your clip nails on the bottom as it holds cable/pipe/conduit stronger. Especially if being pushed/pulled down from above. Easy to knock them out with the weaker part of clip underneath.
Yeah it’s been a strange year and I too have been dragging my feet and trying to avoid things. Not great to be like that as self employed. Hope you’re feeling much better now.

PB get your core drill sorted asap. I stupidly used a standard drill last year to core for a flue and the clutch failed.The result was an extremely painful broken wrist.That was 12 months ago and its still tender...probably because i was back at work the next day even though i had a plaster cast.My first accident on site in 35 years.Everytime i core drill now i am shitting myself.😁
My experience of Plumbcentre are they aren’t great, I’m lucky to have some really good independents where i live, Powred heating for components are great, pretty sure they’re online too. I could write a book of the stress and anxiety of being a plumber/gas man, after 14 years I’ve come to be pretty relaxed and find the best way to deal with stress/anxiety is to learn to not react. Our line of work is particularly bad for it. I broke my wrist in January tripping over awkwardly on a renovation job, 6 weeks out, no driving, was a nightmare but lucky to have my arm back to normal very quickly after out of cast and I’ve put my foot through 2 ceilings but not fallen through haha. Always enjoy your videos PB thanks for putting the effort in!

Always the thick washers on ideal plates, the ones you've fitted are correct. Lots of Isar's where I'm from. Thankfully most have been replaced 👍 Keep up the videos 🙂
100% agreed with your mental health bit im in the tree and garden trade our market is getting flooded with new redundant workers so it’s abit dog eat dog at the moment as for your fooked up lad bless him
pete you thought about getting an apprentice? that can really transform the working day, have someone with you, fetch bits and pieces, carry the tools etc... yes it will cost you money in the short term but you'd start to make it back soon enough as you are a great teacher. i got my start in the industry that way and i'm super grateful to my gaffer for that, you could do the same
Potentially something to do with the 2 different types of plate. There's a top mounted plate or the one that's like your video. The top mounted uses the same seals to the new ones you put in.
Nearly 12 years gas safe and probably hundreds of visits to the dreaded isars yet I’ve never seen one like that. Thought they were all mounted underneath. That’s a piece of piss compared to the under-mounted plates

Just watched this. Thats the “newer” Isar with the grundfoss pump and black div head. It has a different plate and different set of seals compared to the old isar
RE paint spill Guys, on a spillage course many years ago ( I worked factory maintenance for a multi national company, and we used many nasty chemicals ) we were told to contain all spillages. When asked, we all thought diluting the spill was the correct thing to do, but no, contain and clean. Hope this helps someone 😎 I also cut a gas pipe years ago, my neighbour had water coming from their coving, they asked me to take a look. I took up the carpet, set my circular saw at 18mm and ripped a metre or so section out to investigate. I picked out the floor section and saw I’d cut along the length of a 15mm pipe which had been touching the Wayrock sheeting. It was a perfect cut which I probably couldn’t replicate if I tried 🤪
I'm not a plumber firstly, but when you located the pipe(of which the hole can be boarded back up and skimmed granted) why not use a hand held metal detector, i use them to do with my hobby(metal detecting) but their original purpose was to find wires and pipes in walls, i have used my hand held metal detector(garrett at pro pin pointer) to locate pipes and wires loads of time when renovating, it has a 6 inch reach through walls too...i know the old versions of these were quite weak and thats why plumbers probably boycotted them, but these days they are a great bit of kit...i think one would make your life easier and make for a tidier job, less damage to pre skimmed walls that will need patched in(they never blend back in well unless you skim the whole face again) just an idea from a none plumber....but curious to know if you know of the metal pin pointers? and your thoughts on them?
Wow, @thegasexpert is lucky to be walking. 2 yrs ago I fell 17ft onto a concrete floor and fractured my spine in 5 places, has taken me a long time to recover. Only to fall again only off a 3ft platform and break 3 ribs and puncture my lung. If anyone else says that bad luck comes in 3's I'll scream lol. Seriously, I have work 20 yrs plus without issue then 2 falls which seriously damages your health and mental health too. Let alone financial loss. Don't take chances at height guys we are not unbreakable
Well it's 9:15 and I'm not at work. Feeling well Depressed and it's getting me down. Not quoting for jobs. Spending all my savings. And am still stuck in this shitty frame of mind. I can't break out of it. Feel really isolated and lonely.
That sounds a pretty dark place... a few tips you may try... go online and send flowers or whatever to someone you really care about... clean out a cupboard/shed or such... don't focus on anything too far off, take one step at a time... Do some yoga or meditation, it works... don't watch the news... The world needs you so don't hang about... I'll raise a glass to your speedy repairs, cheers and God bless us all
Excellent vid. Frustrating that the merchant gave you the incorrect parts twice. Would a phone call to Ideal have helped identify? I work on oil boilers and Grant UK and Worcester are always very helpful.

Correct ideal part based on boiler serial number PREFIX & gas council number The boiler is probably an ISAR MK3 PREFIX XF onwards You have inadvertently installed prongs seals meant for PRE ISAR 3 BEFORE PREFIX XF PRE XF have PLATE HEX mounted FLAT facing down onto hydraulic assembly POST XF have PLATE HEX mounted on its side like your example You need SEAL KIT 175684 for correct PLATE HEX ORINGS

If you are looking for a core drill either hilti or makita . The makita one is lighter , I have been using one this week, didn't snatch once . Does up to 6" cores
Which Makita? 8406 or 8406C? The smaller one is underpowered and the larger one burns out too often. I've had 5 or 6 and had enough. I've switched to a Bosch but I'm not too impressed with it. It's a pity that DeWalt have stopped producing their 1700 watt drill. By all accounts the motor was bombproof. The Bosch drill I have is the GSB 162- the I think. I also have a large diaquip 2100 watt drill. I'll only use this for cores upto 80mm because it has a huge amount of torque and I don't want to break my wrists. It also doesn't have a soft start which is annoying but once you get going it doesn't jam too often. What make of cores do you use?
@@BODGE71 this weeks hire one is the 8406 . I have had makita before with no issues. My own core drill was a cheap and cheerful sparky brand from screwfix years ago , its had a new clutch and probably needs another one soon too

Yes mate I would appreciate that. I gave Plumbcenter the boiler make and model and a GC number, and they gave me the wrong washers twice? 🤣🤦🏼♂️

Maybe you could have found the pipe by running water for a bit then use your thermal camera to see the colder patch on the wall?

pete you thought about getting an apprentice? that can really transform the working day, have someone with you, fetch bits and pieces, carry the tools etc... yes it will cost you money in the short term but you'd start to make it back soon enough as you are a great teacher. i got my start in the industry that way and i'm super grateful to my gaffer for that, you could do the same
Potentially something to do with the 2 different types of plate. There's a top mounted plate or the one that's like your video.
The top mounted uses the same seals to the new ones you put in.
Nearly 12 years gas safe and probably hundreds of visits to the dreaded isars yet I’ve never seen one like that. Thought they were all mounted underneath. That’s a piece of piss compared to the under-mounted plates
I’ve been through one ceiling, joist to the gooch, luckily it was my own and only the landing which was due for plastering anyway 😂

Get an adapter for your Vac (or blower) and blow out the water in the copper from one tap to another that will help with soldering.

RE paint spill
Guys, on a spillage course many years ago ( I worked factory maintenance for a multi national company, and we used many nasty chemicals ) we were told to contain all spillages. When asked, we all thought diluting the spill was the correct thing to do, but no, contain and clean. Hope this helps someone 😎
I also cut a gas pipe years ago, my neighbour had water coming from their coving, they asked me to take a look. I took up the carpet, set my circular saw at 18mm and ripped a metre or so section out to investigate. I picked out the floor section and saw I’d cut along the length of a 15mm pipe which had been touching the Wayrock sheeting. It was a perfect cut which I probably couldn’t replicate if I tried 🤪
I think ideals are the best for servicing there so easy and user friendly

I'm not a plumber firstly, but when you located the pipe(of which the hole can be boarded back up and skimmed granted) why not use a hand held metal detector, i use them to do with my hobby(metal detecting) but their original purpose was to find wires and pipes in walls, i have used my hand held metal detector(garrett at pro pin pointer) to locate pipes and wires loads of time when renovating, it has a 6 inch reach through walls too...i know the old versions of these were quite weak and thats why plumbers probably boycotted them, but these days they are a great bit of kit...i think one would make your life easier and make for a tidier job, less damage to pre skimmed walls that will need patched in(they never blend back in well unless you skim the whole face again)
just an idea from a none plumber....but curious to know if you know of the metal pin pointers? and your thoughts on them?

Wow, @thegasexpert is lucky to be walking. 2 yrs ago I fell 17ft onto a concrete floor and fractured my spine in 5 places, has taken me a long time to recover. Only to fall again only off a 3ft platform and break 3 ribs and puncture my lung. If anyone else says that bad luck comes in 3's I'll scream lol. Seriously, I have work 20 yrs plus without issue then 2 falls which seriously damages your health and mental health too. Let alone financial loss. Don't take chances at height guys we are not unbreakable

Well it's 9:15 and I'm not at work. Feeling well Depressed and it's getting me down. Not quoting for jobs. Spending all my savings. And am still stuck in this shitty frame of mind. I can't break out of it. Feel really isolated and lonely.
That sounds a pretty dark place... a few tips you may try... go online and send flowers or whatever to someone you really care about... clean out a cupboard/shed or such... don't focus on anything too far off, take one step at a time... Do some yoga or meditation, it works... don't watch the news... The world needs you so don't hang about... I'll raise a glass to your speedy repairs, cheers and God bless us all
Excellent vid. Frustrating that the merchant gave you the incorrect parts twice. Would a phone call to Ideal have helped identify? I work on oil boilers and Grant UK and Worcester are always very helpful.

Correct ideal part based on boiler serial number PREFIX & gas council number
The boiler is probably an ISAR MK3
PREFIX XF onwards
You have inadvertently installed prongs seals meant for PRE ISAR 3
BEFORE PREFIX XF
PRE XF have PLATE HEX mounted FLAT facing down onto hydraulic assembly
POST XF have PLATE HEX mounted on its side like your example
You need SEAL KIT 175684 for correct PLATE HEX ORINGS
The o rings on their own is 174898 might be a bit cheaper
I always use the ideal parts catalogue to be sure.

Them lip seals will eventually leak, I personally would go back and change for the correct part...it’s actual O rings that fit in them brass set.
If you are looking for a core drill either hilti or makita . The makita one is lighter , I have been using one this week, didn't snatch once . Does up to 6" cores
Which Makita? 8406 or 8406C? The smaller one is underpowered and the larger one burns out too often. I've had 5 or 6 and had enough. I've switched to a Bosch but I'm not too impressed with it. It's a pity that DeWalt have stopped producing their 1700 watt drill. By all accounts the motor was bombproof. The Bosch drill I have is the GSB 162- the I think. I also have a large diaquip 2100 watt drill. I'll only use this for cores upto 80mm because it has a huge amount of torque and I don't want to break my wrists. It also doesn't have a soft start which is annoying but once you get going it doesn't jam too often. What make of cores do you use?
@@BODGE71 this weeks hire one is the 8406 . I have had makita before with no issues. My own core drill was a cheap and cheerful sparky brand from screwfix years ago , its had a new clutch and probably needs another one soon too
