The Onceler gets darker and darker, with only his gloves being visible at times is a very nice callback to the original where only the Onceler's hands were shown.

Hey, shady doorags didn't expect to see you here. I know you as the guy who makes those great bojack horseman analysis vids(Granted you don't do those anymore because the shows over and what I assume you wanting to move on to different things) Also great detail you point out with The Onceler, because to me at least, it pays a good homage to the original classic while simultaniously repurposing scenes from the 2012 version which not only creates the best of both worlds, but shows The Oncelers decent into a shallow hallow corporate business CEO in a way that makes him realistic and terryfing.

One thing I appreciate in this animatic is how the Lorax shows the Onceler what he's doing to the environment during the Greed bit before all the trees are gone. Really emphasizes how he knows deep down that what he's doing is wrong but continues doing it for the sake of his pride.

The movie almost got it right, but they screwed it up by failing to take the final step. They refused to give the Onceler agency and instead went for the plausible deniability route, and the Onceler's character and the film's message about environmentalism and corporate greed suffered as a result of Illumination's cowardice and adamant refusal to face reality.

His Pride definitely is at a High since he never blames Greed. Money doesn't blind someone, but rather they Pride. A lot of companies may not even listen to their community because they are higher and they think the choices that they make is better than what communities and others may say.
Onceler Pride is showing little care to the ones lower to him as he is now above them all. He is showing no care especially when he says "Who cares if some things are dying" showing that he literally knows his actions are wrong but his Pride is getting the better of him. He literally DOESN'T care about what the lorax and them are going to until all the trees are cut and his pride cannot be fed

It's just how it seems to be, we either dismantle ourselves completely, which countries like China will never and would seize such an opportunity. Or we eventually come to a head with the only set of systems that we know truly works for more than a few decades.

Change can be made without the cost of the economy and of people's livelihoods though difficult that option is there and will continue to unless something isn't stopped. Furthermore Socialism is not synonymous with dictatorship it has only been tried a handful of times and each time has led to disaster mainly due to the fact that Socialism in these cases never came around legally and or naturally instead being forced on by strife where it is easy for power to be wrested from the hands that seek improvement look at Stalin in this instance, but that is not due to Socialism itself.

Yeah, the entire point of the Onceler in the original story is that he can be anyone, an allegory that all of us are just as prone to the greed and pride that corrupted him into making a horrible mistake, hence why he's faceless. A version like this that slowly causes him to literally lose himself until he becomes a shadow with arms would have been the perfect modernization of that concept, as everything that makes us who we are can and will erode and be erased by greed and pride if we allow it, and thus become the Onceler.
It also, however, served to show that the Onceler was not beyond redemption either as he also represented how anyone can rebound from such mistakes too, as he kept that final seed and protected it by learning his lesson. It would have been incredible for a darker toned Lorax movie to have the Onceler in the post-book setting to slowly regain and colors and face by helping the protagonists, literally regaining his humanity in a sense.

The meta narrative reason is due to not trusting himself, as he is the one who started the mess in the first place. It's kind of like why Gandalf didn't trust himself to throw the One Ring into Mt. Doom himself: he knows that he can't trust himself to do what must be done so instead he looks for someone more reliable to guide and help to do so. It's a layer of a redemption narrative that shows that the road to redemption can be broken and undone if not careful, kind of like trying to rebound from a drug addiction.

In the original, Lorax tried to convince Onceler to at least adequately use the nature's resources for its industry, to keep both Industry and nature alive. And here, Lorax is fighting something way more deep - the reason of that inadequate behaviour in the first place - the Pride in Onceler himself. He's not trying to save the trees, but the Onceler.

It stays true to Dr. Seuss' original vision, it humanises the Once-ler, makes us understand why he never stops or slows down, and shows how anyone can go from an innocent harmless soul to a corporate sociopath. Not to mention the Lorax himself has more weight and agency added to his character, as he's not just trying to save the environment, but he's also trying to save the Once-ler from himself.

Normally in the movie he doesn't really pose a threat and is just kind of s goofy little man, but in this he sounds serious and I really like that side of him. Something about the Lorax just not holding back and calling the Once-ler a Meatface or and idiot is just good to me.

Dude... this is infinitely better than "How bad can I be." Seriously, the false grandeur of the chorus and tone show that he thinks himself to be a magnate of humanity and progress and wealth. He knows that he's destroying everything, but what's the worth of someone else's everything compared to HIS everything? This song, especially toward the end, just hits the right buttons for "going forward, but in the wrong way." Waaay better than what we got.
The visuals here are straight out of a kids movie as well. Not overly dark to be morbid for the kids (like dying animals and people suffering from pollution illnesses), but dark enough to get the message and tone across. Like him at his podium like a dictator, lights upon him from below, and his crazy smiling face as he justifies his horrible actions as well as him dripping with oil, face concealed, looming like a great demon over the land he rendered bare. Everything is perfect. He's dark and grizzled, but not overly so. This achieves a balance of kid-friendly and extremely dark and evil.

Something I've noticed, this animation doesn't just reference the movie and the events that happened before the main story, but it also references the original 1976 animation, as the longer the video gets and the farther the once-ler goes into the corporate nightmare has created, his face eventually becomes a non-existent blur, in some frames you only see his arms and the iconic green gloves, which in a way references how he's barely human anymore and that those green gloves are the only things remaining of his once-great corporate empire... A few parallels I noticed between How Bad Can I Be and Biggering:
•In How Bad Can I Be, The Lorax is solely concerned with saving the truffula trees. In Biggering, not only is he trying to save the environment, he’s also trying to save the Onceler himself.
•In How Bad Can I Be, the whole thing still remains somewhat catchy, despite the last part getting louder and more abrasive, whereas in Biggering, it’s not your convential song, but rather like those you hear in a musical: ones that tell a story. Its a biopic. While How Bad Can I Be constantly pleads its innocence, Biggering never even tries to mask what its doing. It never once tries to reassure or convince. It instead showcases a man's eventual descent into corporate greed and something toeing the line of insanity.
•And the most interesting one, while in How Bad Can I Be it says “Who cares if a few trees are dying?,” Biggering instead uses the words, “Who cares if a few *things* are dying?” This is implying that instead of just the trees dying like we saw in the movie, like true industrial destruction, it ruins so much more than that. We’re talking animals and maybe even *people.*
Conclusion? Take it for what you will. I think both songs are good, but to me, Biggering really does just pack more of a punch, specifically in that it is not afraid to lean on the darker side, whereas How Bad Can I Be simply asks the question, but never really gets the person thinking about it. And to everyone saying they wish this was in The Lorax instead, I totally agree. However, because Biggering is darker than the entirety of the movie combined, I feel like the movie would either have to be severely or entirely changed to make such a piece fit. And really, I don’t see Illumination doing a super serious type movie anytime soon. It’s just not their style.

I've been obsessed with this song and animatic for quite a bit now! It's SOOO good!!
THIS is what Illumination should've done for the movie. Not only keep the song in, but also have them reference the original faceless Once-ler from Seuss' book. As a fan of Seuss, i've always been ticked off by how they gave the Once-ler a face, unlike the book where all we ever saw of his body was his glowing yellow eyes and, most famously, his green-gloved arms. Showing him fully just took away the mystery of the character.
But what this artist came up with was a GENIUS idea: the Once-ler in the film could've become faceless as soon as he begins to lose his sanity. Imagine if that idea was incorporated into the feature.
All in all, this was great to watch (even though i've already watched a few times before writing this comment).
I honestly think you did Seuss' work justice better than most film studios have tried.

Plus, they're owned by Universal, a big corporation, which is, ironically, the very thing Seuss criticised in his book. I mean, how do you even make an anti-corporate movie when your studio is, in fact, owned by one? It'd be quite tricky to do so, i reckon.
But here's hoping one day, The Lorax gets a proper adaptation that isn't the 1972 TV special.

I don’t know how I missed this but this animatic is literally perfect! The timings with the song is impressive, but you also created your own unique narrative around the song to portray the Oncelers rise!
My favourite part is how you recreate the Onceler celebration from the 70s telemovie but with the addition of the Lorax as a public display. Literally putting him through the survival of the fittest! The Onceler is depicted as distant representation of capitalism to the citizens of Thneedville, using the classic hand iconography, but with the Lorax he gets all close and personal, his modern human face on full display. I also love how the Onceler commands the crowd like a Tsunami, a full demonstration of his ultimate capitalist control over the masses!

This really does everything I want from a Biggering animatic. Most of them start out with the Once-Ler already big, but the song really seems to imply it starts off with him nearer the beginning of his journey. Doing it this way lets us really see the moment he looks at what he's doing and *decides* that Biggering is worth whatever he has to kill. And like other folks have said, increasingly darkening his face and letting him be symbolized more by his gloved hands, grasping to claim everything, really really works. That reworked shot from the original movie of him standing over the forest is *particularly* effective, with his face almost dripping with darkness like some kind of eldritch horror. Damn good work.

I also really like that he goes from ignoring the Lorax to straight up bullying him as he shoves him around. This implies that the Lorax can still see his old self and does everything possible to save him and return to what he was before, but unfortunately it is too late.

I like how in “How Bad Can I Be?” The Lorax is trying to save the trees, but in “Biggering” he’s trying to save the Onceler.

This makes the Lorax a better character since he tries to save the one he considers his friend, which makes his farewell more impactful.

I like the idea that I saw in one discussion about the two songs saying How Bad Could I Be could have happened earlier in the movie and Biggering could have been the dark reprisal with The Onceler becoming more and more corrupt and less apologetic. All they would have to do is remove the end of How Bad Can I Be and I think it could work.

@@redstreak9430 That's what I've been saying since I heard this song for the first time: "How Bad Can I Be?" would be the first version of the song with the Onceler being more innocent and human, then slowly transforming into a greedy business man coming up with "Biggering" as the reprise. I could've been so great.

This song and this animatic in particular are up there with the presentation from some of the greatest animated musical numbers: Hellfire from Hunchback and The Plagues from Prince of Egypt. Striking visuals, operatic choir, and just absolutely hard hitting in every way

I know this is repeating a lot of other comments, but basically every shot in this is amazing. The symbolisms in it are amazing, and something I noticed on a repeat watch is the always darkening backgrounds showing the onceler’s transition into cooperate madness. And this is something to do more with the song itself, but I love how in the first half it sounds a lot more like a 70’s sort of psychedelic rock, almost kind of surf rock style song, then it turns into a sort of hard rock song similar to that of a band like muse.
I love every part of this.

I actually really like this storyboard version. I like how you took inspiration from the original movie and book, and how after the wardrobe change, you started focusing more on just the arms, and showing more and more of the Once-ler's face hidden in shadow. It made it feel like throughout the song, the Once-ler was losing his identity to greed and corruption until nothing of who he once was was left. Added more weight to it I think.

Details i loved in this: (btw this is my 4th comment on this video lol i just keep coming back)
0:59, i like how he programmed his desk to lift up whenever he wants just reminding himself that he is in charge, he is so coaught up in his ego that he litteraly raises up his desk just to give himself the feeling of being superior.
2:12 now i can't really tell but i see this as if he is running from the trees being cut down (he is basically running away from his mistakes and trying his hardest to ignore them), that is just brilliant!
oh and that suit up scene in 2:24? PURE PERFECTION!!!
Now not many people have pointed it out, but at exactly 3:56 if you pause, you see the onceler's green arms are pulling the metal thing using the string above which could indicate that the onceler is pulling himself up, he has got so famous and popular that there is no human above him anymore, nobody can help him, only HE can help himself (am i going too deep? i might be...)
Now everyone pointed it out but the scene at 4:04, i liked it, but i really didn't get much chills from it as i got in like the suit up scene idk why people are praising it that much. Still very creative tho.
4:23, THIS now THIS is the image that perfectly sums up any corprate company, them starring at you like they are bigger than you, better than you, with th eir world ending machines surrounding them, the smoke covering their face to show how mysterious they are, the positions their hands are in basically showing that they know what they are doing, they know it is bad but they "like it that way".
And of couse, the last hope for the environement (the truffula seed) being ironicaly found in one of the pipes that keeps the workshop running, the same workshop that is contributing to the destruction of the environement showing that even if these companies are doing what they doing, deep inside they hope that some being, some minor coincidence can help them get rid of their greed.
If you read all of the text, thank you :)

I love this so much! Just seeing him getting more and more corrupted and wanting to bigger his company is actually really nice to see. I want this fully animated even if it’s not in the movie, it’d just like to see it. This kinda answers some mystery questions I had surrounding the Onceler, like did he build Theadville or did someone else and he just had the idea?

I just realised that a slightly altered line is soooo much darker
In the movie he sings "Who cares if a few trees are dying."
In Biggering it's "Who cares if some *things* are dying." It was more than just the trees dying, it was the animals perishing from his greed too, and possibly people from the fumes...dang

UNLESS there’s a chance that it could become a Broadway horror comedy musical, much like Little Shop of Horrors or even be the next adult R-rated version of Suessical for the next generations.
This song would be included in the soundtrack and maybe have Ethan Slater as the Lorax along with many other well-known Broadway actors/actresses to play the characters we all know and love.
I’d watch the musical in a heartbeat.

I love these re-imagining of the other story bord video, the transition from the past leading to the present. His eyes becoming more violent and deranged, and lastly how his face becomes more and more covered. With addition with his gloves becoming the only colored part of him, really giving a nice "Foreshadowing to his future self" (And a great callback to the original).
I honestly love how this was put together, and would be hyped to hear if someone fully animated it :)
