Thanks for that, as a Classic 500 owner, of six years, who has just put his name down for a Red Speed 400 for June delivery. You answered a lot of my questions. I haven't test ridden this bike, and I probably won't, as all the bikes I have ever ridden before buying, have turned out to be lemons, and all those that I have bought without riding, like my classic have been brilliant. i have put my leg over the Speed 400 and I can flat foot the ground and the suspension felt fantastic and spongy, the weight difference was so noticeable, and I don't feel so strong these days so that would be helpful around the garage, and like you say, if it looks great, that always makes you feel good when riding the machine.
Hi TAYM, `Baby Dave` here. I actually think that Triumph have got this just about right and I reckon this bike and the 400 X Scrambler, will sell loads this Spring and summer. Just having those 2 variations, keeps it simple for now but also gives Triumph the chance to introduce more models, using this engine, should they want to.
Well being a street triple owner . I have found it fits like a glove I have test rode one twice tried other bikes too .The poor street triple is not being used performance wise . So I have ordered a Speed 400 I think now its all the bike I need . Your longer rides have helped confirm what I think cheers
Seems a cracking little bike similar in performance to my CL. The Honda is probably a bit smoother and will crack 100mph given a little time. I would say the Hornet 500 (formally CB) is a direct competitor although without the classic looks of course. Great real world mutter review TAYM (much more engaging than listing specs)😊
Hello. I have now done 475 miles on my Speed 400 and it is a lovely bike that is well suited to riding on backs road and I would agree that 60 mph is the sweet spot for this bike. Thanks
I rode this two days ago and must say it’s a great bike for beginners and/or people wanting a very light nimble bike. The only things I would do is change the front or rear sprocket to gear it a touch higher. Maybe put a little windscreen on it to block some wind. Great little bike and I’m sure it will sell by the truck load at that price point.
Thanks for the ride Mr TAYM. Great bike, had I not got the Classic 350, i would have gone for either the Speed or the Scrambler just down to its lightness and manoeuvrability. With my age i would find it easier. Sat on one at the Triumph Experience Day last year! However I don't regret the 350, Ruby is now a family member and lovely to ride when I can brave our 'Rat Runs' round here. Its 100+ cars in 5 minutes not 10!! Give Dave my best wishes!! 😂
Intriguing platform for sure. I’m 70 end of April and my Tiger 900 is the best. Sad but true, I can’t see my priorities shifting sooner than I would like. I’d love to see a direct competitor to the Himalayan with a 21” front wheel, spokes, windscreen, all that stuff for a manageable adventure bike that I could maybe pick up! I know I’m repeating myself but here in the Northern Rockies there’s way more dirt than pavement

TAYM. Very good review of how it makes you feel. I miss the feel of the old British "thumpers" 350 and 500 singles. The 400 Triumphs have good specs, low weight and strong power, but I wonder if they will have 'soul' like the 350 Enfields seem to have. Maybe that is just the personal opinion of each individual. Riding my motorcyle, just me and my thoughts inside a full face helmet has always been 'therepy' for me. I am sure there is a correlation between the 'thump' of an engine and my heartbeat that has joyfull undertones on a longish journey whereas a two stoke engine screaming with laughter is exhilarating but only for short rides. Rain is forecast at some point during every day for the next 13 days for you and for me. Take care out there.
Absolutely there is a correlation 😁 same with a horse and rider 😁 I only realised this with bikes when I got Bertie 😁 it sounds crazy but I reckon it’s right 😁 thanks B 😁
Morning TAYM marvellous mutter if I had to choose between these triumph 400’s or Royal Enfield I’d probably get the new shotgun, admittedly not in the same cc bracket but the extra 250 cc isn’t massive but the road presence and comfort would be 🤔 carry on that man Caio for now tat ta 👍🏻
I really like the look of these small capacity bikes from Triumph and might give them a try. I usually have my wife on the pillion but she’ll not go without a top box. Having a Quick Look I see Triumph do a rack and top box making it a possibility.
I think as you say the relaxed state of mind is something Royal Enfield definitely has built in (although i don,t find the interceptor as relaxed as rhe classic. You can ride any bike slowly but some just feel right which i imagine is why we all end up with something different, i really don,t think there is a one bike for all situations but most bikes will do most things and if thats in a way that you like "Winner " 😁. I am currently "missing " a 4 cylinder and i think a cheap bandit or similar is in my future but i alawys find them soulless eventually ☺ 👍👍🏍

Certainly seems like a sweet lil bike for Urbanites. I’d need to squeeze a bit more performance out of the bike for my roads and distances ridden. Probably why the 890 and Ultra Classic seem destined to remain my main bikes. Still, I’m considering one for local day to day jaunts.
Got one on order just going to have second test ride now its warmed up a tad, wstched or read modt of the reviews available but no one really gives a sense of it as an out of town commuter and the mpg it does tootling on at the limit.
Thanks Anthony 😁 I have seen comments suggesting it will do 90 mpg just going steady from those that have one. I don’t think I got anywhere near that though😁
Update for you bud had it a couple of months now 1st service done and can now rev it a bit. Getting 76mpg but I think as I become a better rider carry more momentum etc it should improve. Still waiting for the fly screen and do find the air blast above 60 males it a bit tiring to ride and obviously hurts the efficiency.
