Heck yeah! Think I like the sound of this one the best compared to the Kentucky-style (more even in tone/volume from treble to bass, to my ear). Could be the difference in bridge position on the head being responsible for part of it (closer to the tailpiece on the Kentucky one and closer to the middle on this one). Best wishes from the eastern panhandle of West Virginia.
So, sitting having a barbecue in bonnie (this means nice, lovely, beautiful) Scotland and I have introduced our Clifton Hicks to the music track list. Welcome and keep playing.
I’ve spent hours searching TH-cam for other renditions of this tune. Yours is the absolute best by such a long shot. Even the versions where a fiddle is involved.
GOOD MORNING BEAUTIFUL BROTHER HEY HO DODADAY LOVE IT TY FOR POSTING IT GREAT WAY TO START MY DAY HAVE A BLESSED WONDERFUL WEEKEND CLIFTON WE LOVE YOUR PLAYING STAY SAFE AND HEALTHY AND GODS BLESSINGS ON YOUR HOUSEHOLD AND HEAVENS PANTRY SET YOUR TABLE ALWAYS BEAUTIFUL BROTHER 😃💯✌️💚💚✌️💯
Hell, yeahhhh, clifton, you started me on my banjo journey, and you are as close to a frigging HERO there is, NOTHING BUT SMILES from listening to you, THANK YOU, THANK YOU, please never stop playing for us, I need you, bless brother
So cool to see the WV and KY styles compared with the same tune. Your work is indispensable Mr. Hicks, thank you! Also, "Hey old man, I want your daughter, To cut my wood and carry my water" got a great laugh out of that
Man U really got me into fretless banjo, sadly in my country is imposible find one, but I can hear those ancestral sound in your video, really I thank u
I've watched this a dozen times and just now seeing the sourwood behind your right ear! I'm gonna assume your choice of location was deliberate. Well done!
Absolutely beautiful. Sweet sound of banjo and smooth vocals. And that is a very cool banjo!! Thank you for the awesome music and interesting photos. Made my day!!
Woow! This is one of the best looking mountain banjos I've seen so far! Lovely song, Sourwood Mountain was the first song I've learnt, plus being born and raised in the mountains this song always kinda touches my heart
Reminds me of seeing the old timers sitting on the porches of the generals stores that used to be around here. A good cold drink and some peanuts really made my day when I got to hear the songs and things they used to pick and play.
Cliffton, this is great, I still can't thank you for setting me off on my banjo journey, for me THIS is banjo music and ballad, blessings Mr hicks, you make me smile,
I gotta tell ya,I'm 53 now when 8 was oh probably in my early teens back in MI. I had a great friend who's dad played bluegrass and they took me to a outing. Being younger it felt like we drove for hours to get there,it was only like 30mins.! It was one of the most inspirational things next to my daughter in my musical life. People scattered here and there just jammin and having a wholesome time. Well as life went on played guitar, bass and sang in metal bands, never got anywhere but girls but hey! And now here I am re inspired by you young man, went with the open back and love it!! Can't play s#^t yet for some reason but I won't quit!! Thanks for bringing that back to me! And can you imagine, I was considering the accordion!! Yeah right, like Walking and chewing gum!! Bwahahaha!!! No drums either!!Lol thanks again!!! Don't ever stop!!!(sorry that was a novel!)😈🤣🤣🤣
This is really good I love this, thanks. Also I love your banjo and I’ve been following your banjo making tutorial on how to make the mountain banjo and I’ve made some progress. I work as a instrument maker so it has been going by really well:)
Great playing and singing! That banjo has a great sound. I think mtn banjo's usually sound too tinny and high pitched but this one has a great warm tone. Well done!
Thanks, Jelle. They all sound "tinny" like that cause almost every maker uses a metal ring inside--making the modern mountain banjo sort of a cross between a gourd or wooden banjo and a tin pan alley gas can ukulele. This style of mountain banjo, however, utilizes no metal parts whatsoever and represents an older, simpler design.
Amazing! The best banjo sound ever! Clif, who made your banjo? And what tuning is good for a Appalachia mountain banjo to get that old style sound? Thank you

Kentucky style is superior, and it isnt even close.
@@jimmyjoe8225 I like WV better aswell
Clifton, your sound is 200 years old! Please don't ever decide to sound any younger. We love you where your at! Awesomeness at its finest! 👌👌👌

Thanks I learned that from George Gibson in Knott County, Kentucky.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo cheers fella. Keep on plucking.
Born and raised smack in the middle of WV. My grandpa was a banjo playing coal miner.

Found you about 5-10 years ago. I love this traditional music and all your banjo knowledge. Thank you for what you do.
Damn i love the fretless ones. Right on brother 🤙🏼
That banjo sounds really good in such a weird way

We live in the sourwood capital of the world. Best honey in the world too.
@ It’s probably our showiest tree here in Leon Co., FL but few appreciate it.
I used to live in Wakulla County.
@@CliftonHicksbanjo Please return. We need you now more than ever! 🪕
That is some righteous ability to get the right pitch on a fretless instrument. The nylon strings make the sound so mellow. Another great posting.
Absolutely beautiful. Sweet sound of banjo and smooth vocals. And that is a very cool banjo!! Thank you for the awesome music and interesting photos. Made my day!!
Oh Lawdy Clifton. All those women and i can't even handle the one i got! Bless you brother and that's some mighty fine pickin'
What a gorgeous and natural sound!

Great playing, great sounding banjo.
I was born in Bluefield WV.
Probably should have stayed there.
That banjo’s lookin pretty good, Clifton! Sounds so good too! ❤️
Incredible musician, love your channel. I started learning Scruggs style a few months ago, this makes me wish I learned old time style instead
Steve Martin does both styles, you can too!

Yeah brother.
Thank you.
From Australia.
Great artist, great instrument !
In every other video description you seem to mention someplace I have lived, or a place I have family. Might explain why I love your music.

hel yeah~!! first heard this music aboard my old tin can destroyer in the navy ,
Sounds great Clifton! Been thinking about making one thanks to these vids. Just gotta find some decent lumber..
Does Carver (and others) still sell kits? I started by buying and assembling myself.

Love the sound of this banjo! Is it possible to use steel strings on a mountain banjo?
You can. Lots of people did and do. I _much_ prefer nylon strings on these.
Could you do a video on stringing a mountain banjo sometime?
