Walden, a game - A Philosophical Tale of Exploration & Survival

  • Walden is the gaming version of Henry David Thoreau's 1854 philosophy book of the same name. Like the book, it's a kind of journal of the author's time, living self-sufficiently near Walden Pond, on the outskirts of Concord, Massachusetts.
It's a first-person, open world exploration and survival game. But this doesn't really do it justice. It's also a work of philosophy, in the sense that it imparts a particularly thoughtful view of the world, and of living. Here's our look at Walden.

For those making the point that playing an indoor video game defeats the purpose of learning about nature and Thoreau, I would agree--EXCEPT that I think this game was designed mostly for educational purposes. Teachers and classrooms get it for almost free, so that teachers can let students have a fun connection with Thoreau and ideas like conservation.
It's not practical for teachers to take a bunch of students outside beyond school grounds (and most kids would just screw around anyway), and field trips to the woods are unlikely to get approval. So, here's something cool they can do in class that students might actually enjoy and get them thinking.

What's it called when you're really, really prepared for a camping trip? Being Thoreau.

I lived in the area for several years and went there to swim during summers. The games needs way more ducks.

The problem is you can't really do this much anymore in the real world because someone somewhere always own most of the habitable land on Earth now, and if you want to stay on it you have to pay them to do so, which ties you into making money somehow, and that traps you back in the whole system again. That's what seems to be the case in the UK where I stay at least.
Edit: The bit about "taxes" goes exactly to my point.

This was the first thing I ever realized about the world when I was young. We aren’t really free in any true sense, every place is owned, you can’t just create a shelter somewhere and figure out living unless someone knows where you live and you’re paying to exist there and it entraps you into the system. That’s why the whole “you can be anything when you grow up” rang untrue to me because you can’t really be or do _anything._ You must be a part of the system. You must choose between a few options that they’ve laid out for you, and everyone acts like those options are infinite and/or nothing else is possible or desirable

Yeah that's sort of what he warned about, and now look at us. God is pretty much dead and commercialism rules our lives. Everyone should read Walden. The original hippie was right. If only we had listened 150 years ago. I might not have a smart phone today but I would be happy. Especially since one of my crops would be cannabis.

Im reading Walden right now and honestly I don't think its that bad. Its certainly not for everyone but for those who can appreciate it, it's very good. I'm going to have to check this out.

Based off the book about being in nature, here's a game where you sit at your computer instead of being in nature.

3.5/10 was unable to comment extensively on a battle between ants, using it as a metaphor for pointless wars
also, didn't need to take inventory for the first 1/8 of the game, making for an incredibly dull introduction

suburbanindie not sure if you're being sarcastic, but it is. The game is in early access at the moment. To be fair, though, it's been in development for quite a long time and still shows appalling lack of polish, so I wouldn't be surprised if an unimpressive skybox makes it into the final game.

    • @suburbanindie
      @suburbanindie 7 ปีที่แล้ว

The foreground wouldn't look all that terrible if the sky didn't have such a stark, undetailed contrast. It's ugly

    • @testoftetris

It's not pronounced "Conn-CHORD," it's "CON-kerd"!!! And, like almost everyone else, you pronounce Henry's last name wrong, too, but that is to be expected.
