Gotta say, I didn't figure that thing out until I bought the sonic mega collection many years later for my gamecube back in the day. And even then I still got a "time up" death while trying to figure it out then too.

As soon as I saw the purple water my heart rate went up "Oh god it's going to play the music ahh aaaaaah."
25 years on, and it's still as gut-wrenching and stressful as ever.
And they somehow managed to add desperation to this version of the drowning music. At least more children will be as a traumatized as we were. XD

I love how even the remixed levels are pretty different from the originals.

Absolutely love how they kept the old underwater countdown music with just a little bit of remastering in it. Just feels so right, always kept me on my toes and scared when I was little

TheNawaf258 I think it's a bug, Tails was supposed to return flying from above after dying a bit earlier
They let Tails drown, so now he haunts you for the rest of the level by popping up in random places.
This game just keeps getting better I'm really impressed with the sprite animations which are so smooth. Chemical planet act 1 looks really good so it's the original Chemical planet act 1 & act 2 combined but with new elements looks so cool and the music is so catchy.
Tee Lopes somehow made the drowning music even more terrifying.
this was always my favorite level, unfortunately because im so bad at sonic games its the furthest ive ever made it and the water made me give up.
This and Aquatic Ruin were my favourite sonic 2 levels

The moment Sonic went into the purple water I got so nervous, I didn't think that water and the drowning music would still scare me

the red and white cylinders from Carnival Night Zone were my nightmare
I like how we can't see the beginning of the level because of the needlessly long "E3!!!" pink logo.
Even this long after the classic Drowning countdown makes me tense up. I heard that getting faster and I pretty much said 'Come on, move your ass move your ass move your ass!' and actually sighing a bit when the normal music kicked in...
Did 90's baby sonic fans had that nightmare feeling where you first died in sonic the hedgehog 2 when that chemical went up around them moving blocks Ik I did born in 93 so STH2 was my first sonic game

This remix is so fucking on point. I could cry. I love it. It's absolutely perfect.
That drowning music though.... Glad to see they kept the moving blocks from Act 2, just to traumatize us all over again.
For a split second, you can see Tails' death sprite lagging at 1:49 and 2:17. After that, he no longer returns to Sonic.
This music will always fill me with nostalgia... and utter, indescribable terror...
I bought this game for memories and stuff, but then I made it to the underwater staircase of hell. Doubt I'll ever touch the game again.

Another great remix plus a taste of sonic advance 3, i usually am not for preorders but i declare this THE exception!
I like how the sorta mix the original act 1 and act 2 into the new games act 1 but add spins to it

This is weird to see the Sonic as he graphically looked in the first Sonic game with Tails on a stage from the second game. Neat.

After 25 almost 26 years, this zone is still amazing & that purple water still gets on my nerves till this day

I wonder if they kept the secret passage that allowed to you skip the water section entirely in the original? That's the route I always took years later when I found out about it.

I loved the music for this stage but the water aspect always drove me up a wall

As a Sonic veteran for over 15 years, this was hard to watch.

At 0:34 he shouldn't be able to stand on this "grid", in the original it's a foreground element and Sonic passes behind it
I really wanted to listen to that new drowning theme.
Ok, so basically all Act 1's are rehashes while Act 2's are semi original. I guess that's ok. They could've just made brand new original stages from the beginning, but that's just me.
Why the heck do they need to use the exact same level design of the original level in act 1? It was cool in Green Hill, ''cause we were kinda fooled, but now it's getting old.

CatDog 2016 the reason they did that is so we don't get bored of doing the same levels. I love sonic 1 green hill, but it kinda sucks playing through it now because I know where everything is. that's why I like generations classic sonic levels on xbox or ps3 more than 3ds. 3ds uses the same exact levels while xbox and ps3 mix them up, which is interesting.
@polygon I realize you guys are busy with E3 and covering the massive amount of games, but could we get Nick Robinson commentating over this footage or some such? I love the way that guy loves Sonic and it actively makes me want to play Sonic, which I don't like. It doesn't even have to be now, but after E3 maybe?
