Your reaction is fantastic and you're absolutely right and Karen Carpenter the number one female vocalist of all time in my opinion rest in peace Karen Carpenter
Every time I hear her singing , I feel happy and at the same time sad, happy to hear her beautiful voice and sad knowing her tragic story of how she died. Carpenters are awesome.
I loved them. It broke my heart when she died. She was never overweight, and yet the media kept saying she needed to lose weight. She ended up dying from anorexia.
He was a HUGE fan of Karen Carpenter's voice and recorded it as a homage to her. HE along with the actual writers of the song, always stated her version is the staple and greatest version..
I remember all too well age68 here love these reaction vids re p when we show them our music! THIS SONG IS ORIGINAL Luther Vandross redid it years later
Her brother Richard was an amazing composer, arranger, and pianist. Their blend and overdubbing were awesome together! Listen to 'Close to You' 'On Top of the World' 'Rainy Days and Mondays'
Possibly the most pure pop vocalist ever, the difference between her live recording and the studio versions are almost non existant, she was an amazing talent especially considering she really wan 6:20 ted to be the drummer, which she equally excelled at, thanks to her brother Richard we were and are bless with this amazing voice! I was crushed when I her of her passing and am still moved everytime I hear her voice. God bless Karen Carpenter, may heaven enjoy her for eternity!
Early mid 70s. This was my youth. Can sing almost every song. Remember, this was before auto tune, so that is her voice. Look for some videos with her vocals isolated for a true treat. Just no other voice like hers and I was crushed when I heard she died. I was on break working my teller job when they broke in to announce it on the radio on a Saturday morning. Just such a loss. Karen and Richard were so incredibly talented. Richard has carried on. Thankfully, they had so much tape with Karen’s voice. Those tight harmonies were Richard and Karen dubbed and redubbed until you had a choir. I’ll never tire of her voice. Thanks for this memory! ❤️
Not only a phenomenal singer, but plays the drums exceptionally as well. There’s some videos on here showing playing her drums. I remembered the day she died. I just couldn’t believe it. She was my favorite singer back when I was in high school. ❤
None of the Carpenters songs are bad. She always had such a unique voice. Bless her heart she passed away in her 30's. She suffered from Anorexia I think but actually died from a heart attack brought on by it. You ought to listen to their songs Calling Occupants of Interplanetary Craft. & Please Mr. Postman.
She was a drummer. That was her main talent. She just happens to be a great singer as well! Richard, her brother, asked her once to cover the voice for a song they wanted to record. She blew the socks off everyone in the recording studio. At first she used to sing while playing the drums. She felt safe behind them. She was only 5'4" and very shy. But later her voice took over.😊 Most likely the drums you hear are her playing them on a separate track. This was a common practice when recording. She was very particular about the percussion in her songs. This is an example of her talent with the drums. th-cam.com/video/sdHyzGXAJPg/w-d-xo.htmlsi=UZjtsuIuad-OOEx1 Enjoy!
There are many more Carpenters songs for you to enjoy. Check out their major hits Close to You, We've Only Just Begun, Yesterday Once More, Rainy Days and Mondays, Goodbye to Love, Hurting Each Other, For All We Know, and All You Get From Love Is A Love Song
This is actually a cover. The song was originally recorded by the couple who wrote it, even though the song is most famous for the Carpenter's version. Luther Vandross also covered it.
I get angry when I think about how we have missed out on hearing more years from this beautiful woman and her beautiful voice. She had the voice of an angel. She only had to open her mouth and that smooth voice was magical. No auto tune crap. Just natural raw talent!! We lost a great talent when Karen died one month before her 33rd birthday..because someone was unkind. It only took one person to tell her that she was too heavy…that her body was shaped like a pear. This is why people need to think before they speak. It only took one person to say one sentence to her. And those unkind words killed her in the end 😢😭 There will never be another voice like hers. She’s been singing in heaven for many years now and at peace.
I checked the Comments and nobody mentioned it but this song was used in the movie "Tommy Boy". It was a driving scene with Farley and David Spade. Epic scene and Epic song!!!
One of the winners of American idol won with this very song. I forgot his name but he sang it very well. But no one could match the perfect and rich and sorrowful voice of Karen carpenter. And her brother arranged these songs so pristinely. He is a very exceptionally gifted musician with a good voice as well. But her voice is unmatched. This is probably my fav or her songs. This and Solitaire.
Karen definitely has a beautiful voice, the Carpenters definitely have a unique and well known sound! They were quite famous!❤❤ Great reaction as always AB!!❤
Luther Vandross did his cover in the 80’s. This song was 1971. Richard Carpenter did all the orchestration. Luther mixed it up in his style. Ruben Studdard covered Luther’s version to win American Idol season 2. I’m going to let the others suggest another Carpenters song. I’m going to suggest a Carpenters song cover! Yup, James Wilkas f. Tori Holub recreated the classic Carpenters song We’ve Only Just Begun. Tori is 20 the same again as Karen was in 1970 when she recorded her version. In Late April, Tori was one of 8 invited singers at the Carpenters 55th Anniversary Celebration. So she got the cred. She also got the voice. I hope you consider this a viable option, in keeping with a Carpenters style. They honored Karen by releasing the cover on March 2, 2024, Karen’s birthday in heaven. Thank you for your reaction to this Carpenters song. Please also react to their song, "Close To You". Peace. Yes, Luther Vandross also sang it in the 80s. The Carpenters sang it in the 70s... this was 1971. Others also sang it... but The CARPENTERS made it reach the highest point.
Looking back on it now, Karen Carpenter was the true superstar because she was battling anorexia and anxiety, and eventually lost the battle but at the same time could go in front of an audience and emote and connect like no one else
I remember listening to every album, watching every appearance and loving my fellow “Karen” (before the name became what it is now). I was only a kid and her voice was pure magic, I wanted to be just like her. What’s heartbreaking now is knowing that all the beauty of her voice, presence and person brought her no happiness and killed her by her early 30’s. She was extremely shy, didn’t think she was attractive and very sensitive as she’d been bullied (I can relate to that). She did love playing the drums and agreed to help her brother’s band with that only. It was out of the spotlight. Unfortunately Richard wrote amazing songs but his voice was only ok and none of the others had a talent like hers. Richard and her mother (especially her mother) pushed her until she agreed to sing and once people heard her there was no going back. She still might have been ok if they could have just recorded but it was the live shows and tv appearances that doomed her. She dreaded each one and was physically sick before every performance, likely where the bulimia grew from. Then the professional bullies took over, calling her chubby (she was never chubby) and constant calling her plain, unattractive and every ugly. Sadly she believed it all.
Have you yet heard the cover of Ticket To Ride from the Beatles by the Carpenters or their cover of Desperado by the Eagles? Two fantastic covers😮. For best audio quality, please pick a lyric video over the music video, which is very bad audio quality for the time.
OMG, this is my first time watching you, and in the first 10 seconds, I ❤you.😂 Your first sentence was so fast I was like "wow, this is fun." If you want to hear something really gooood, check out "Cook with Fire" and "Sing Child" by Heart.
It may sound familiar to you because of Luther Vandross' 1983 cover, which is also wonderful. But Usher's version is this same song, too; it was actually part of a tribute album honoring Luther Vandross.
@@dennislalka7965 That's true, but if you've heard her solo album, you can definitely hear how much better she sounded when Richard did the vocal arrangements, backgrounds, and keyboards. He also chose her songs and kept her voice "in the basement" (where the money is)....low notes are so soothing!

She was insanely talented and I truly believe no one has come close.
Her death was such a tragedy.
I still miss her 😢 RIP Karen 🙏🙏🙏
Not ONE
She was an awesome drummer also❤
Have you heard of Tori Holub? She sounds eerily similar.
She was famous for doing many songs in one take.
Not just clean and crisp, all the time, every time, but she often recorded these tracks in one take, Superstar was a 'one-take'. Unbelievable talent.
Reading the lyrics off of a dinner napkin that Richard had scribbled down.
One of the greatest singers of all time
There's only one Karen Carpenter what a beautiful voice ❤
Yes it was covered by the late great Luther Vandross❤️
Actually 34 different artists covered it including Roberta Flack in 2021.
I never knew that - now I'm going to have to go search for his version!
Leon Russell, one of the writers, and Rita Coolidge did a duet.
Written and performed originally by Leon Russel.
@@maxwellroxy3184 A brilliant writer.

A true gift . I’ve listened to her since I was 13 now 62 and never tire listening to that voice .

weird ain't it?
The Carpenters were popular when I was a young girl. I still enjoy listening to her sing and the music that showcases her lovely voice.
The voice of an angel.
Props to the amazing songwriter, Leon Russell.
