I don't know who told you that Carpenters were a folk group. They were Pop/Easy Listening at the time. Many rock fans would make fun of them to their friends as not being 'cool', and then listen to them at home as a 'guilty pleasure'. And many more who did not really appreciate them at all back then, have come to realize what incredible talent they had.
So true i listened all the time but never told my friends but loved their sound and Karens Voice was totally incredible in my head the people who made fun or people who didnt listen to me were the uncool ones lol
As a boy growing up in the 60s and into the 70s I was a "rocker" (not a "mod" but I loved The Who nevertheless). So The Carpenter's were anathema to me. At least at school and with my rocker friends. At home I had Carpenter's records and even (gasp 😮) John Denver albums! It was actually because of this that I established a lifelong friendship of well over 50 years with a fellow rocker with a similar "guilty pleasure". In fact Larry is the only person who has been to more Rush shows with me than my wife 😊
Love all of this comment, except for the fact they're called Carpenters. There's no "The". There's never been a "The". So, totally justified correction about genre, but please be even more pedantic 😀
The story is true. She was actually addressing the anorexia, trying to get healthy, but her heart could not take it. I remember the day she died. So sad.
Really unfortunate thing was she never wanted to stand up front and centre in the first place, she was happy behind her drum kit, but I believe it was her brother that pressured her into it....
This song was written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell. They released a version of Superstar in 1969 on the B side of another song. Rita Coolidge sang it on an album. Cher sang it and so did Bette Middler. Richard Carpenter wrote it in notes in the Carpenters "From the Top" That Bette Middler was singing it on Johnny Carson, he thought it would be a hit for Karen. Anyway the song is about a groupie who had a fling with her favorite star. He leaves and she fantasizes that he's coming back.
We comment about her illness and death, because she was so loved when she died at such a young age. When the news came out to say our hearts were broken is an understatement. She had such a gentleness that we needed and all of a sudden she’s gone. She is truly missed, thank God for the recordings and videos. Please checkout their Christmas album.
Please have your wife on as much as possible. I like seeing you both. ....and yes, lets see your wife's reaction when Karen is behind the drum kit. BTW, she did a cover of Help! from behind the kit in concert. If you haven't seen it....
Her voice IS ENCHANTING!! SO DANG sad we lost her SO YOUNG!! YES, she already had anorexia and someone actually had the nerve to say she was fat when, you could see all her bones!! UNBELIEVABLE!! Who cares what someone looks like, Only God Can Judge!! ❤❤
Your wife is very intuitive! Karen Carpenter's voice was very enchanting and clear as a bell! She also was known for having a perfect pitch. A true modern legend!
I remember her passing and it such a sad time. To truly see the joy in her, you need to watch her play the drums. Her expressions are incredible and you can truly tell she was in her happy place. She was a drummer first and morphed into the wonderful angelic singer. You truly need to watch one of here drumming videos, they are amazing. RIP Karen. You stole our heats.
This voice was WAY before auto tune when you could actually hear how a singer sounded. Her voice was often referred to as angelic. Literally one one of best voices in music history. Carpenter began dieting while in high school. Under a doctor's guidance, she began the Stillman diet, eating lean foods, drinking eight glasses of water a day and avoiding fatty foods. She reduced her weight to 120 pounds (54 kg) and stayed approximately at that weight until around 1973 when the Carpenters' career reached its peak. That year, she saw a concert photo of herself and felt that her clothing made her appear heavy. She hired a personal trainer, who advised her to change her diet. The new diet built muscle, which made her feel heavier instead of slimmer. Carpenter fired the trainer and began her own weight-loss program using exercise equipment and counting calories. She lost about 20 pounds (9 kg) and intended to lose another 5 pounds (2.3 kg). Her eating habits also changed around this time; she would try to remove food from her plate by offering tastes to others with whom she was dining. By September 1975, Carpenter weighed 91 pounds (41 kg). At live performances, fans reacted with gasps to her gaunt appearance, and many wrote to the pair to ask what was wrong. She refused to declare publicly that she was suffering from an eating disorder; in a 1981 Nationwide TV-interview, when asked point blank about anorexia, she simply said she was "pooped". However, she and those around her knew that something was wrong. Dionne Warwick wrote that when meeting Carpenter for lunch in New York in 1981, "It was shocking to see how very thin she was."[88] In an interview after Karen's death, Richard said that he was aware that Karen was unhealthily dieting starting around 1975 but that neither he nor their parents knew how to help her.. In 1981, she told Richard that there was a problem and that she needed help with it.Carpenter spoke with Cherry Boone, who had recovered from anorexia, and contacted Boone's doctor for help. She was hoping to find a quick solution to her problem, as she had performing and recording obligations, but the doctor told her that treatment could last from one to three years. She then chose to be treated in New York City by psychotherapist Steven Levenkro. By late 1981, Carpenter was taking thyroid-replacement medication, which she obtained using the name of Karen Burris, to increase her metabolism. She used the medication in conjunction with increased consumption (as many as 90 tablets per night) of the laxatives upon which she had long relied, which caused food to pass quickly through her digestive tract. Despite Levenkron's treatment, including confiscation of medications that Carpenter had misused, her condition continued to deteriorate, and she lost more weight eventually reaching an all time low of 77 pounds. She told Levenkron that she felt dizzy and that her heart was beating irregularly. In September 1982, she was admitted to Lenox Hill Hospital in New York, where she was placed on intravenous parenteral nutrition. The procedure was successful, and she gained 30 pounds in a relatively short time, but this put a strain on her heart, which was already weak from years of anorexia She maintained a relatively stable weight for the rest of her life. Carpenter returned to California in November 1982, determined to reinvigorate her career, finalize her divorce and begin a new album with Richard. On December 17, 1982, she performed for the last time as she sang Christmas carols for her godchildren, their classmates and other friends at the Buckley School in Sherman Oaks, California. Carpenter's last public appearance occurred on January 11, 1983, at a gathering of past Grammy Award winners who were commemorating the awards show's 25th anniversary. She seemed somewhat frail and fatigued, but according to Warwick, Carpenter was vibrant and outgoing, exclaiming, "Look at me! I've got an ass!" She also began to write songs for the first time after returning to California and told Warwick that she had "a lot of living left to do”. On February 1, 1983, Carpenter saw her brother for the last time and discussed new plans for the group and for resumed touring.[c] On February 4, Carpenter was scheduled to sign papers to finalize her divorce. Shortly after waking up that morning, she collapsed on the floor of a walk-in closet at her parents' home in Downey. Paramedics found her unconscious and in cardiac arrest with her heart beating once every 10 seconds (6 bpm). She was rushed by ambulance to Downey Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 9:51 a.m., at the age of 32.
Thank you for all the detail. I only knew the barest minimum of the story before. Karen's incredible talent was beyond mortal understanding. RIP Karen Carpenter😢
I am 71, so I heard Karen from the beginning! My favorite song Is " Rainy Days and Mondays." I have depression and to me, it's a song about my mother and me. I cried when I heard she died. The sad part was she was doing fine and was considered cured when she died. She had done so much damage to her body before she got well, it damaged her heart to the point where it quit anyway.
Great singers know that the soul of the music is found between the cracks of the piano keys. That Karen sang right to the line is how she could take such a beautiful tone and make it bland and boring.
Karen is a much underrated, yet very talented drummer with the voice of an angel. Most people don't consider her as one of the greatest drummers of her generation, simply because of the style of music the Carpenters created.
That's because she claimed herself a drummer that could sing... But a drummer first. She didn't like being out from her drum kit. My mother actually knew the carpenter family they lived in lynwood California at the time. Tragedy with this one. A one time only voice.
I really enjoyed the quiet, thoughtful presence of that lovely lady beside you, P. There's a lot of expression to be conveyed in micro-expressions. Nice reaction duo (even though Baby probably took both of your minds off it for a minute ). I hope you can bring her back for more. Or she just might do it on her own...😀
There is no other group that propels me back to my childhood in the seventies as much as The Carpenters. They were always on the radio it seemed, as well as having so many TV specials. You'll have to check out some of their Christmas specials they used to have on network TV now that we are in December.
A lot of us have continued to miss Karen during the decades that have passed since she died. We still weep when we hear her voice. That is why so many listen to Tori Holub's covers of Carpenter's song - she sounds just like her.
My all time favorite female singer. Yeah. Soft rock / Pop served with a very healthy dose of sugar. Still... at that time... her singing and my emotions just connected !! Saw the brother / sister duo twice, live. Excellent performers!
"Enchantress" ✨✨Perfect description of Karen's vocals. ❤I always thought this song was about a crush she had on a popular singer but only heard it on the radio. 🎶🎶Nice to see you again Mrs. BP. 😊The Carpenters are timeless. ❤
I enjoy the reactions that include your "Wifey". Please do bring her back when you can. We enjoy your reactions very much. Please keep up the good work.
This is my favorite song by The Carpenters. Karen Carpenter had such a beautiful voice, we truly lost an incredible artist when she left us, far too young.
She has always been my top favorite female singer. I still often listen to her music. The world lost one of the most beautiful voices of the 20th century. Yes, please do more carpenters.
Have you noticed what is missing in all of today’s music vs what used to be? Brass & string instruments besides guitars? It would be so different from what kids are growing up with now.
I've always thought of this song as a young woman falling in love with a guy on the radio that she never met. "You told me you loved me, baby" was something she heard in her mind from the lyrics of whatever popular song her "Superstar" happened to have on the radio at the time.
I’m an about to turn 70 & had all their albums. My daughter who is now in her mid 40s, still to this day knows every word to their songs because we would play the old vinyls on a regular basis. Karen’s voice was so beautifully effortless….a one off in my opinion.
I always think of this song as the longing of a groupie who connected with a superstar and hopes for his return so they can be together again. "You told me you'd be back again."
Straight up, I love when wifey joins you. I watch a lot of different channels and most of the time when someone brings their spouse into the mix, I'm not a fan because the spouse is generally "trying" too hard. That's why I appreciate your wifey. She just genuine. You get a virtual smack on the wrist for introducing Karen as your side piece. Also, it was the era of "Twiggy" (if you don't know who that is she was a super skinny super model) and Jordache tight jeans. I grew up as a teenager during that time and curvy girls were not acceptable.
She had a lower than average 3 octave vocal range. It was in this lower range that set her apart from other female singers. Karen Carpenter once said about her lower range, “The money’s in the basement.”
@@donakmarie She was a mezzo who was among the first to take advange of the newly invented dynamic response microphone's ability to selectively enhance the lower frequencies when held very close to the mouth, as she had to given the small size of her voice. A lot of pop singers are "contraltos" today, very few natural ones however.
Bring her back. Please do "Carpenters : "Merry Christmas Darling" You can just begin to see her weight drop. Anyway I play this song every year in memory of my late husband, We were married for only two years before he passed way too soon from a early onset of a massive heart attack.
Karen, in my opinion, is the best female vocalist of all time. " Enchanting ", is the perfect description of her voice. And yes, please react to the TV episode of her playing the drums. Her talent had no bounds. Thanks for this one. Great reaction!
She was a drummer and played the drums for the group and was also the lead singer . . . and the powers that be said "we can't see her . . . she has this beautiful voice and she's hidden behind this big drum set . . . she's got to be center stage" . . . so she came out in front. She was more comfortable hiding behind the drums. Anyway, around 1973 or 1974, she did a Bob Hope TV special and she didn't like the way she looked on TV. She thought she looked heavy (she actually looked fine, but to her, she looked heavy). By 1975, she lost a lot of weight. Around 1981, you could really see there was something very wrong. She was just skin the bones. They would try to layer her clothing to hide it, but you could still see she was way too thin. She's one of my favorite singers of all time.
I don't know who told you that Carpenters were a folk group. They were Pop/Easy Listening at the time. You nailed it. I grew up with Floyd, Zep, Deep Purple, Yes and loved the Carpenter. Except we were proud to admit it.
As a boy growing up in the 60s and into the 70s I was a "rocker" (not a "mod" but I loved The Who nevertheless). So The Carpenter's were anathema to me. At least at school and with my rocker friends. Voice of an angel. Flawless vocals. Gone wayyyyyyy too soon. She blessed us as long as she could. RIP
WWAAYYY TOO soon!
The story is true. She was actually addressing the anorexia, trying to get healthy, but her heart could not take it. I remember the day she died. So sad.
Karen’s mom was also very controlling of Karen. She married the wrong person too.
😢always makes me cry
Really unfortunate thing was she never wanted to stand up front and centre in the first place, she was happy behind her drum kit, but I believe it was her brother that pressured her into it....

It didn't revolve around a reporters comment, and this isn't folk music, not even close.
We comment about her illness and death, because she was so loved when she died at such a young age. When the news came out to say our hearts were broken is an understatement. I had the privilege of seeing The Carpenters live twice in 1972/73. I was totally smitten with Karen and was devastated when she passed. RIP KC
OOOOOH,and it's Christmas time give a listen too "Merry Christmas Darling" by the Carpenters!
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Yes
I always play their album A Christmas Portrait during the Holidays. Seamless hour plus of wonderful Carpenters music, plus orchestra, choirs, piano.

Keep your wife on this show!!! Like the both of you!!!
73 from New Zealand and still love Karen's voice and her brother Richard's harmonising!!
This song was written by, Leon Russell. It's working title was originally called, Groupie, because that's what the song is about.
This voice was WAY before auto tune when you could actually hear how a singer sounded. Her voice was often referred to as angelic. Literally one one of best voices in music history.

What and excellent and sad commentary.. Thank you.. xo
My heart breaks all over again reading this. So very sad.
Love everything the Carpenters have produced! The world has missed the remarkable talent of Karen Carpenter 🙏❤️
Such a lovely wife and so glad she enjoyed the Carpenters.

Ms. Stoner... we vibe ma'am.. btw Im 61, so we can appreciate the Carpenters as the wonderful musicians that they were.. xo
She is captivating because she was one of the rare people with perfect pitch when she sings
Great singers know that the soul of the music is found between the cracks of the piano keys. That Karen sang right to the line is how she could take such a beautiful tone and make it bland and boring.
We always called it Easy Listening.
She is polled many times as the most beautiful voice of all time
Bring her back, she's fresh air. 🤗
Bring her back! ❤
Her voice was so beautiful

She really wasn't underrated people have just forgotten.
Karen was one of the best drummers of her day and she could sing too
Ummm… drummers? I don’t know. But top female singers of all time definitely.
@@laurarominger2073 go do some research..
Yes do bring your wife back and play more Carpenters music for her and the drum solo video too.
My favorite Carpenters song is "We've Only Just Begun". A beautiful song.
BP, you need to put wifey in front of this one!⬆
Mine too. A happy lyric song but always makes me cry for some reason.
A bit over 53 years ago We’ve Only Just Begun was our wedding song. We are still just beginning.
@ so sweet ❤️
That was their masterpiece.
Bring your wife back, it's great to see you together.
A TALENT ON LOAN FROM GOD!!!!
There'll never ever be anyone who can match the pure quality of Karen Carpenter.
Beautiful angelic perfection ❤
She had a voice that went around the world. One of the most popular wedding songs. A Coke jingle. She was a delight.
I really enjoyed the quiet, thoughtful presence of that lovely lady beside you, P. There's a lot of expression to be conveyed in micro-expressions. Nice reaction duo (even though Baby probably took both of your minds off it for a minute ). I hope you can bring her back for more. Or she just might do it on her own...😀
..."Class of 76"...Karen Carpenter...Always so Classy....
Makes me cry every time. What a loss for the world.
There is no other group that propels me back to my childhood in the seventies as much as The Carpenters. They were always on the radio it seemed, as well as having so many TV specials. You'll have to check out some of their Christmas specials they used to have on network TV now that we are in December.
OK a must for you guy' is "We Have Just Begun" by the Carpenters!!!
I grew up on classic rock but my God Karen her voice!!!
It’s called We’ve Only Just Begun
"We've only just begun" was taken from a bank commercial. Richard got the rights to the full song and they recorded it.
A lot of us have continued to miss Karen during the decades that have passed since she died. We still weep when we hear her voice. That is why so many listen to Tori Holub's covers of Carpenter's song - she sounds just like her.
I just love her voice, one of the most emotional ever! RIP Karen. ❤️
I was grief stricken when Karen passed. I loved her voice SO much. When people talk about great women vocalist, I always think of Karen Carpenter.
What a beautiful artist, and fabulous singer, and what a sad passing she suffered. Absolutely needless!, And shameful. Sweet, Sweet Lady. I miss her.
I think wifey is bent still about what you said. 🤔🤷♀️. Bring your wife back as much as you like, it’s great seeing her and you react together.
She looks great.
There are so many great Carpenters songs, AND they had their own TV variety show for a while. I vote for more, more, more. ❤❤❤
Yes I'm here glad she liked it❤❤❤❤❤❤
Hauntingly beautiful...I get the feels every time.
Yep. Chills!
She was amazing singer, she gives me chills, May she R I P ❤
My all time favorite female singer. Yeah. Soft rock / Pop served with a very healthy dose of sugar. Still... at that time... her singing and my emotions just connected !! Saw the brother / sister duo twice, live. Excellent performers!

Genre: Ballad for this particular song. Love the Capenters. Thanks for the reaction.
This is my favorite song by The Carpenters. Karen Carpenter had such a beautiful voice, we truly lost an incredible artist when she left us, far too young.
Definitely bring her back!
One of my fav songs ever!! Her voice was and still is one of the best.
Btw: LOVE your wife!! She's real and beautiful! Have her on more often. 😊😊
Such a beautiful song sung by a beautiful singer .. love the Carpenters
She has always been my top favorite female singer. I still often listen to her music. The world lost one of the most beautiful voices of the 20th century. Yes, please do more carpenters.
I like seeing you and your wife reacting together. I love the carpenters
Have you noticed what is missing in all of today’s music vs what used to be? Brass & string instruments besides guitars? It would be so different from what kids are growing up with now.
@ladyjade001 And quality lyrics with meaning and substance 😢❤
Why pay for a dozen excess musicians when one guy on a synth has you covered?
I remember the day I heard of her passing, I cried like I knew her personally how could anybody forget this extremely talented young lady‼️
SHE is gonna DIG THIS!!! I just KNOW IT!!! HUGS to YOU, BOTH!!! :)
I agree with the others about you need to hear We've Only Just Begun!!!
The best voice EVER
Beautiful!!! What a voice!!!
Hi wifey 😊. Good to have you share on some of thee best music!
I've always thought of this song as a young woman falling in love with a guy on the radio that she never met. "You told me you loved me, baby" was something she heard in her mind from the lyrics of whatever popular song her "Superstar" happened to have on the radio at the time.
The voice of an angel 😇. RIP,sweet Lady. Your voice will always be with us ❤.
Always interested in wifey's opinions! Love the Carpenters.❤
I’m an about to turn 70 & had all their albums. My daughter who is now in her mid 40s, still to this day knows every word to their songs because we would play the old vinyls on a regular basis. Karen’s voice was so beautifully effortless….a one off in my opinion.
I grew up listening to the Carpenters - always loved them. Yes, keep bringing your wife back - I enjoy hearing her perspective.
This song was written by Bonnie Bramlett (of Delaney and Bonnie) and Leon Russell. They also recorded a version of it
Loving your wife. Karen was super talented.
I always think of this song as the longing of a groupie who connected with a superstar and hopes for his return so they can be together again. "You told me you'd be back again."
I agree! I think that is a spot on scenario.
Haunting voice

Her voice is like velvet. My gosh, what a talent. A life cut far too short.
Whats happening Black peg-as-ussssssss!!!....keep pumping out great content 👌🏽
One hell of a drummer as well
In my top 5 singers of all time
I would actually consider this type of music to be Adult Contemporary or Easy Listening, rather than Folk music. Yes, bring her back!
I’m really digging how you are incorporating your family life into your musical passion . Keep on keeping it real .
i read in a comment one time that i think perfectly explains her voice. rich warm melted chocolate.
There will never be another Karen Carpenter. I often play their music. Great to see you Mrs BP 😅
Bring her back. Please do "Carpenters : "Merry Christmas Darling" You can just begin to see her weight drop. Anyway I play this song every year in memory of my late husband, We were married for only two years before he passed way too soon from a early onset of a massive heart attack.
They were awsome! Hugs to you both! Hugs!😊
Karen, in my opinion, is the best female vocalist of all time. " Enchanting ", is the perfect description of her voice. And yes, please react to the TV episode of her playing the drums. Her talent had no bounds. Thanks for this one. Great reaction!
It's always good to see you amd Mrs. P definitely more.
Hello to your beautiful wife!! Glad to have her join us!! ❤❤
Love seeing your wife with you!
Love the Carpenters.
I have their greatest hits downloaded on my phone. I used to enjoy them on 8-Track tape. Lol. Glad to see others finding them.
Keep bringing Wifey back!
Great reaction buddy and awesome you have your wife in the videos.
