This would have been hands down the best selling Mario game if it was released on the NES while they were still being made. So impressive what's been done.
That would be like bringing a bicycle to the Middle Age. Or you with your current knowledge in primary school. The impressive things you see were achieved over time.

@@vertz1515They look like auto-generated captions that were imported into the captions editor without any actual edits, though. More recent automatic captions replace certain words with [ __ ] now.
well the one at 0:26 is uncensored, so it must have picked up a different word there somehow.
0:17 WOW, that is the smoothest NES sound byte i have ever heard.
The NES did have a way of playing high quality audio, but it took up so much space that barely any game used it.
@@Kirbman Also, companies really didn't put anything into speech samples even into the CD Age...
@@AmstradExin Speech samples have been used quite a few times even before games went to CD.

It's not constructed from the source, though, I assume, it actually started from the compiled ROM.
@@607 right, what i meant was, they may as well have started from scratch because of how much they changed, tho i was mostly joking. i know that would still be way more work
@@nathanisbored Maybe, but I think starting from scratch would be in some ways a lot less impressive, and it would be a lot less cool for players of Super Mario Bros.!
@@607 keep in mind most romhacks do "cheat" a little bit by allowing for bigger rom sizes than the original devs were allowed due to cartridge manufacturing costs. so romhacks will probably always be able to get away with more than their source game. the original smb was only 31kb, but i imagine this hack is probably quite a bit more (a quick google search suggests the NES could go up to 1Mb)

This hack is so good that I feel comfortable giving one genuine critique of it. If a player skips the hint using a warp zone, then they have no way of knowing to fall underground. That's the only thing really wrong, other than the difficulty curve being really slow and then really steep. Like I said, the hack is very good and so was the video :)
This is a good point, though if people are taking the warp zones, presumably they have played the game before, or they may have to play it through the normal way to "learn a secret".
There is a warning in the beginning that if levels are skipped the hints are also skipped
New Soup DS Castle Theme is so underrated.
I heard it from this and Super Mario Bros. Dimension (another fan-game, not a romhack)

@@the-engneer Yes, and a bunch would even work on a home-brew cartridge in a non-modded nes since they don't exceed the limitatons of the hardware.
They didn't have the best piracy detection in NES days, even up to Dreamcast.

I love this series. Both live and the after-Vod. Was super cool doing the CFTR with you too.
That Bowser popping out of nowhere and you "Oh gosh!" had me in stitches
this one is breathtaking graphically. very sharp mix of reused and original sprites but also a lot of really impressive little things in terms of animations, palette work, and a very clean HUD. smb1's unidirectional scroll axis keeps the right edge of the screen clean, which makes a big difference overall IMO relative to smb3. spectacular stuff, nevermind all of the gameplay/QoL improvements, level design, etc!
Actually loving these videos. So glad you can do this full time now.
Am I the only one who's glad to hear the OG NSMB castle theme getting some much-needed love? It's a shame the one from Wii ended up overshadowing it, especially since it's not nearly as good.
This one is right up there with the metroid mario romhack. Really cool!

I played the Rom Hack by Frantik, it was AMAZING!- except for 1 level in particular, that you have 99 seconds to race through lol, great video as usual btw, Kosmic!

I don't know if you figured it out later, but the star in 8-1 appears to be your reward for bouncing on the koopas enough times, since lives are meaningless here.
i was 20 seconds in, heard that high quality "itsa me mario" and had to check if it was real

That was so good. It appears to be less of a hack and more of an original game. Normally "hacks" use a particular "Mario game engine" 1,2,3,US 2, etc., but this game contained elements from all 4 and unique elements that none of them contain, Very cool!

Bowser moves like a horror game ghost.
If there were trails behind him, would probably make the boss fight scarier.

1:48 I knew what part of the song was coming and I saw the three blocks, so I thought "no way in hell he'd want to hit those with the music and think fast enough to get it." And then he did it seemingly by accident making it even more of a gift.

21:21 I feel like it does not specifically kill it, but just bounces it slightly upward. You can kinda see how it just kinda bops up and then falls down just like it would usually do

24:56 - You got a start here because you jumped on enough koopas to get a 1-up. So it's just not coins when you get a star power but whenever you get a 1-up since there is no lives counter.
This hack really is a masterpiece it is crazy what you can do with those. This feels more like original game than SMB1

brilliant vid man! if you're looking for insane hacks, i'd recommend some of the mario 64 hacks. it has some VERY good easy hacks and theres loads of kaizo hacks too, but some people love them and some people hate them
This is, by far, the best SMB1 romhack I have ever seen. 2nd place isn't even close.

Do you include staff roll music? Because Super Mario Land's ending does for a big part play during the credits, if I recall correctly. In that case, I disagree: in my opinion #1 is Mario Kart Wii, #2 is Super Mario Galaxy, and #3 is Yoshi's Island. #4 is Super Mario Land.

It's one thing to call an asterisk a star, but he just called a star an asterisk and I've rarely been so astounded.

i think the star thing is because when you would normally get a 1up from bouncing on enemies, it gives you a star since lives arent a thing in this hack

A lot of the stuff I'm seeing him talk about like going straight to fire from small or only going down one level when hurt or piranah plants with shells all happen in Mario 3 on the Gameboy

I wish games/hacks like this were taken more seriously in the speedrun community. I love watching smb2j and super mario 64 speedruns but I wanna see more people run games like this
the beginning of the first level is DEFINETLY from mario world, i think its eitehr 1-1 or 1-2, one of the levels branching off of yoshis house on the world map

I think because there are unlimited lives, you instead get a star for any situation in which you would normally get a 1-UP, like 100 coins or bouncing on a large number of enemies

@@thisisasupersayin376 it's possible but most games didn't use it because even a short sample takes up like half the original SMB cart size and it was too expensive. Plus you can't do anything else like play the game while the sound plays
