I always love when people understand why Katara threatened Zuko at the end! Some reactors think it’s out of character or too extreme. And it’s realistic that the GAang didn’t immediately welcome him into the group. We’re all sympathetic to Zuko at this point, but he still needs to atone for the things he’s done in the past 2 seasons. It’s his decision to side along with Azula in the season 2 finale that led to Aang, the last airbender, the avatar, the only hope for the 100 year war to end, to *die.* Katara in the intro of the show always says how she believes that “Aang can save the world,” and Azula’s actions, and indirectly Zuko’s actions, could have entirely ruined that, killed off the sole survivor of airbender genocide, and doomed the world to living under the absolute tyranny of the fire nation. Katara is kind, but if you betray her trust, like with Jet, she’s *ruthless.* Zuko is the newcomer here who not only drastically will change the dynamic of the group, but could easily betray the group if he was as cunning and manipulative like Azula. Katara is completely within her right to threaten him.
Totally, had to remind another channels yesterday that Aang actually died and the new Avatar wasn’t born because Aang died in the Avatar State. Katara had been at her most powerful when she’s protecting those she loved. When she realized that Jet did something to Sokka, she froze him to the tree. She blood bend to protect Aang & Sokka and now threatening Zuko.
In addition, we, the viewers, have the advantage of seeing everything Zuko is going through: his past, his struggles, his doubts, his better moments. Almost all of what the Gaang has seen has been Zuko attacking or betraying them. For them, this turnaround in his attitude feels very sudden. I don't blame them for being skeptical, and I understand Katara's reaction. She was personally betrayed by Zuko not that long ago, and Aang literally died for it. She's giving Zuko a chance, but she wants to make sure he's very aware of the consequences of falling back into his past actions.
It's actually the perfect reaction, the entire series positions Katara as the mother of the group. Not only is she nurturing but like a wild animal, she will stop at nothing to protect her family if it's threatened.
Exactly how are you gonna discipline someone whose face was burned a few days ago by his own father. What he needed was to know was that no matter what he said or did he was loved and thats exactly what iroh did.

When you really think about it, Katara has four people she absolutely loves - her brother, her father, her grandmother....and Aang. She's close to Toph, but when it really comes down to it, those four people are the ones Katara absolutely needs. Then when you consider the death of her mother, who should have been one of the those people, at the hands of the fire nation and the fact that Aang literally died in her arms after Zuko betrayed them - yeah, it makes sense for Katara to threaten Zuko's life over Aang. I don't blame her at all.
"Hello, Zuko here." Such an iconic quote done in the most awkward way possible. I enjoy the fact that we get to see Zuko be a bit of a normal teenager for once. I'd say more but I'll probably end up in spoiler territory, Avatar: The Last Airbender only gets better from here on out.
To be fair, you can't blame Zuko for randomly sending out an attack like that. I mean not too long ago he left the Fire Nation to join the Avatar and boldly proclaimed it to his father, the Fire Lord. It would make sense for Ozai to send someone to "take care" of his son so the Avatar doesn't end up getting stronger with firebending and actually defeating him before the comet. Not to mention that Zuko is now a full blown traitor so treason would result in death as said by Ozai last episode.
Also Toph literally sought him out in the middle of the night and then they say they have to go after him 😂that's my only gripe with the GAang in this episode
At 21:52 Aang does the fire nation bow that he learned from the fire nation school he attended, where the fist goes under the hand. Such a small detail that shows an immense amount of respect Aang shows for other nations and customs and his growth in general.

It's important to note the Katara says if Zuko does anything to threaten or harm Aang, not the gang or her friends or even her brother but Aang. It could be because hes the avatar & the world's last hope or because she has real feelings for Aang that's open to interpretation

It's fun rewatching ATLA but skipping all the scenes from Zuko's perspective. Then when you reach this episode it makes sense why Team Avatar is doubtful that Zuko has switched sides. The same goes for watching the series from Zuko's perspective without Team Avatar scenes and seeing him gradually realize that he's been on the wrong side of the war.
Something I read one time that really adds to Katara’s reaction is that after all the fights, she was the one healing Aang (before and after healing abilities). To trust the one who caused a lot of that pain, directly or not, must be difficult

But , I bet almost no-one will kill their oldest and best friend for one mistake, esp if that mistake affects strangers ('the world') and not you, personally. And Roku's threat seems (in hindsight) to have worked for 25 years. Only a last minute change of heart by Sozin at the volcano (when they were really old men) ended so badly for the world and for Roku personally. I think if it wasn't for the volcano , Roku outlives Sozin and none of our main story ever happens.
EXACTLY. This show totally utilizes animals as cues for characters' trustworthiness. Fun to look for when you rewatch it. Interesting example: at the North Pole when Zuko has to find a way inside the Water Tribe city, and he does so by mimicking the sea lions (seals?). But then barks at them to "BE QUIET!" And they do. But he also doesn't hurt them, and it's a comical moment, so? And that kind of perfectly expresses where his character was at, at that point.
I love that when you strip away Zuko's anger and hotheadedness and find-the-Avatar drive, you're just left with plain awkwardness 😂 poor boy's lacking alllll his social skills

At 18:30 I really really like how Aang created that tornado. He shoots a bunch of air upwards, which lets him dodge the attack and also allow the explosion to heat up that air. Then he just blows a bunch of surrounding air in that direction so the hot and cold air will spin around each other. I love it

As a fan, that is super gratifying to see - because the show invests so much in developing that. I love how Katara let's Zuko know exactly how she feels. This is more than a threat. It's a promise. Her mother died protecting her from fire benders. Aang died fighting fire benders. She and Aang had their first truly intimate moment just a day or so before. She's protecting her man. And, she shows that she isn't afraid in any way by walking directly out of the room without looking back for any kind of attack. And, note, she waited until everyone else was elsewhere. The only surprising detail about the scene is that the writers got away with a death threat in a kid's show by a good prominent character. The writers have balls as big as cabbages. I also like to add, Zuko's expression to me says he's impressed. No one would risk their life for him out of friendship. His uncle is family, and that doesn't count. His crew are bound to protect him. Well, they were. He's finally seeing the strength of true friendship and doing good things. Lot's of evil people think good people are weak. That's not always, or even often, the case. It takes real strength to do the right thing no matter what. I bet he envies Aang, and yearns Katara's respect.

Katara's anger is definitely within her character's personality and is not something even Zuko is unaware of. He's already tasted some of her venom once when they were imprisoned together. Now that ruthless anger has gone up several notches. I cannot wait for the next few episodes. It's going to be epic!
Truth be told I think that's not the bloodbending influence. His betrayal killed Aang and it was only her not using the spirit water on him that brought him back. So I think it's both her having a bit of a crush on Aang added with her clear mama instincts. She'll bury him.

if were being honest, just how you guys brought up how the kids can be brainwashed in the fire nation and aang saw that, there are multiple episodes in book 3 that justify the gaang giving Zuko a chance. specifically eps 1,2,4,5,6. re-watch those episodes and you'll see its all about learning to forgive your enemies and accept people for who they are, along with other themes as well, the ones I mentioned are just the ones that stood out to me. but its sprinkled in almost every episode, which is another reason why i love this show so damn much,
The reason Katara hates Zuko is because his betrayal in Ba sing se led to Aangs death if Katara didn't have the special Water Aang would have stayed dead
The gAang's initial reaction to Zuko, and especially Katara's reaction and her speech to Zuko at the end of the episode, is are all totally in line with their characters. I appreciate you guys understood this, as many reactors don't seem to get it at first.
One reason Toph is not against Zuko is that every time she "saw" him, he wasn't against team Avatar. He even teamed up with them to fight Azula in this one random abandonned village, where our uncle Iroh got burned.
What's fascinating about each character... none of them are idiots, but pretty smart... That also makes Azula one of the best villains I have seen... really clever, a very strong and disciplined bender and tactician and even very dangerous and skilled without her bending
I haven't got to the part where Zuko encounters them face to face yet, but in his little practice speech you guys are talking about how the group may not be accepting of him, and I love that. A lot of reactors get upset when they dismiss Zuko right away, but the gAang hasn't seen a lot of his development that we the views have seen.
this is the episode where you truly see zuko’s personality for what it is and not some cover up of trying to look like a mysterious badass or play the role of a prince. it really makes you think of all the things he’s done and how a lot of it was him acting like azula and failing lmaoo ie when he attacked katara and aang at the spirit oasis in book 1 and was calling her a peasant and talking shit just to get his ass beat later on within seconds 😂
It sucks for them that it has to be Zuko, but there’s not a lot of choices for Aang’s firebending teacher. They don’t know where Jeong Jeong is. They might be willing to let Iroh to teach Aang, considering that thanks fo Jim, Katara was able to carry Aang out of the fight in Ba Sing Se, but they don’t know where he is. Toph wasn’t there in season 1 and she had a conversation with Iroh last season. There were some of my best quotes in this episode: *I’m beginning to wonder who’s really the blind one around here!* and especially without a single doubt *Hello Zuko here.*
People sleep on Sokka but he has done many great things, for example in this episode, defeating Combustion man once and for all, and also technically if the Earth King didn't blab.. the invasion theoretically could of worked.. that was Sokka's plan too Also love how the Gaang trusts Aang but also still have their own reservations, like it is so.. human..

Uncle can put up with Zuko bc he saw the good in him (standing up for the oung soldiers in the war meeting for example) and bc he was the same no toolong ago. Hot headed and buying into he fire nation propaganda (see how enthusiastic he was in attacking ba sing se before lu ten died)

I hate Katara so fucking much, yes, my dog it's name Katara but she was named before this episode came out, but still I hate how she behaves, even with the conflict and all she is way to over the top with her open hate compared with how she was, how she becomes, this looks like just "unreasonable" hate. The last time Katara started to trust Zuko, Aang died. How is she out of line?

Always trust how animals react to people. They usually can sense the good or bad in them. 😌 So that's good to utilize when judging people sometimes.

As a fan, that is super gratifying to see - because the show invests so much in developing that. And as first time viewers, that should really make the payoff of this episode & others all the richer for you. :D
I love how Katara let's Zuko know exactly how she feels. This is more than a threat. It's a promise. Her mother died protecting her from fire benders. Aang died fighting fire benders. She and Aang had their first truly intimate moment just a day or so before. She's protecting her man. And, she shows that she isn't afraid in any way by walking directly out of the room without looking back for any kind of attack. And, note, she waited until everyone else was elsewhere. The only surprising detail about the scene is that the writers got away with a death threat in a kid's show by a good prominent character. The writers have balls as big as cabbages.
I also like to add, Zuko's expression to me says he's impressed. No one would risk their life for him out of friendship. His uncle is family, and that doesn't count. His crew are bound to protect him. Well, they were. He's finally seeing the strength of true friendship and doing good things. Lot's of evil people think good people are weak. That's not always, or even often, the case. It takes real strength to do the right thing no matter what. I bet he envies Aang, and yearns Katara's respect.

Katara's anger is definitely within her character's personality and is not something even Zuko is unaware of. He's already tasted some of her venom once when they were imprisoned together. Now that ruthless anger has gone up several notches. I cannot wait for the next few episodes. It's going to be epic!

This is one of my favorite Katara moments, seeing someone who is usually a "goody two-shows" be so dark and angry really gives her depth
Truth be told I think that's not the bloodbending influence. His betrayal killed Aang and it was only her not using the spirit water on him that brought him back. So I think it's both her having a bit of a crush on Aang added with her clear mama instincts. She'll bury him.

if were being honest, just how you guys brought up how the kids can be brainwashed in the fire nation and aang saw that, there are multiple episodes in book 3 that justify the gaang giving Zuko a chance. specifically eps 1,2,4,5,6. re-watch those episodes and you'll see its all about learning to forgive your enemies and accept people for who they are, along with other themes as well, the ones I mentioned are just the ones that stood out to me. but its sprinkled in almost every episode, which is another reason why i love this show so damn much,

none of them are idiots, but pretty smart...
That also makes Azula one of the best villains I have seen... really clever, a very strong and disciplined bender and tactician and even very dangerous and skilled without her bending
All I can say about this episode is that Katara scared the living CRAP out of me at the end…
I haven't got to the part where Zuko encounters them face to face yet, but in his little practice speech you guys are talking about how the group may not be accepting of him, and I love that. A lot of reactors get upset when they dismiss Zuko right away, but the gAang hasn't seen a lot of his development that we the views have seen.
this is the episode where you truly see zuko’s personality for what it is and not some cover up of trying to look like a mysterious badass or play the role of a prince. it really makes you think of all the things he’s done and how a lot of it was him acting like azula and failing lmaoo ie when he attacked katara and aang at the spirit oasis in book 1 and was calling her a peasant and talking shit just to get his ass beat later on within seconds 😂

It sucks for them that it has to be Zuko, but there’s not a lot of choices for Aang’s firebending teacher. They don’t know where Jeong Jeong is. They might be willing to let Iroh to teach Aang, considering that thanks fo Jim, Katara was able to carry Aang out of the fight in Ba Sing Se, but they don’t know where he is. Toph wasn’t there in season 1 and she had a conversation with Iroh last season. There were some of my best quotes in this episode: *I’m beginning to wonder who’s really the blind one around here!* and especially without a single doubt *Hello Zuko here.*

I hate Katara so fucking much, yes, my dog it's name Katara but she was named before this episode came out, but still I hate how she behaves, even with the conflict and all she is way to over the top with her open hate compared with how she was, how she becomes, this looks like just "unreasonable" hate.
I just don't feel it was well written this few episodes.
Edit: I love how everyone will hate this comment, but I have watched this show 3 times now and I still think this 3 episodes or so the hate is just too much, as I say or I tried to say I get the hate she has, but she just openly show that to Zuko, after living in the fire nation, even telling Hama that those people weren't responsable and didn't need to be held accountable. Yes, Zuko has done some messed up things, all of them (except Toph I believe) has a reason to hate him, but the personality that she has still doesnt fit right
The entire time they've known Zuko, he has been trying to destroy the world's last hope for peace. They don't know anything about him besides that and they haven't seen his character development like the audience has. In keeping with her character who had to step up into a caretaker role at a very young age when her mother was murdered by Zuko's people, Katara is extremely protective of her own people. The last time Katara started to trust Zuko, Aang died. How is she out of line?

We have seen several times that Katara is A) protective and B) VERY passionate about the things she believes in. Add that to the fact that she no doubt feels personally betrayed by Zuko because she trusted him literally minutes before his actions caused Aang's "death" and it would have been out of character for her NOT to react like this.

So you're comparing Katara's anger at Zuko, someone who has personally caused her harm, attacked her home village, chased them all over the world and caused Aang's (temporary) death, to Hama attacking random helpless innocent civilians who have no part in the war. Seriously?
Katara offers her kindness and compassion freely to those who need it as she did to Zuko when they were imprisoned together, but betray that kindness and she is angry. That has been consistent in her character
