Monsuco I think fallout 4 fails a lot in that sense, they are few dialogues where you can even mention prewar stuff. Half the time pre war stuff is brought up the sole survivor acts oblivious

I always assumed the "prize" to an "exotic local destination" was a concentration/extermination camp, and that only the distrustful swamp people held out aginst the gummint.
For me, Fallout 3 was my introduction to the Fallout universe, so I had never heard about a New Plague until I found the terminal entries at Point Lookout. In my mind, it all seemed like a tricksy way for the government to manipulate people into reporting someone who may be a communist sympathizer. I mean they may not want to tell on their own friends or family members, but if having “new ideals, such as socialism” is a symptom of some horrific, contagious disease then someone needs to be told right away. Or at least before the next ice cream social! So great work shedding light on this subject. It is much more interesting/disturbing than I ever imagined.
I always had similar thoughts about the New Plague. As soon as I read the line about new ideals and Socialism, I figured it to be more Governmental fear mongering rather than an actual physical malady. Nothing more than rampant Joe McCarthyism at its worst. All the other symptoms probably came from being beaten by other 'more patriotic' Americans who didn't like what the 'plague victim' had to say or during an interrogation at one of those safety/military checkpoints. That's why the first step to fighting it was to APPROACH a suspected victim and then ISOLATE them. There wasn't anything biological to fear catching. But it would insure that anyone else with similar ideals growing in their minds would be less inclined to express them with anyone else. To be honest, after years of delving into the lore of the Fallout Universe, I find myself thinking that Chinese Communism would have been far better to live under than the so-called US Democracy as described. At least the Chinese didn't seem to be using their own citizens as fodder for experimentation or handing the populace mounds of horse shit on an hourly basis.

He isn't said to have any symptoms in common with the plague, and it's only through speculation that the blue boils are compared to contusions or external hemorrhaging. Why wouldn't pre war doctors have called telltale blue boils by what they are instead of a generic term like "contusions"? Really, contusions and external hemorrhaging are in line with being physically assaulted, and profuse sweating would come from being anxious or nervous, like a spy or communist sympathizer might be in pre war America. Macready's kid likely doesn't have the New Plague, because it isn't a plague at all. They might as well have called it the Red Plague, because it's really just communism.
The terminal about registration gives me the sense that this “prize” of a vacation to an exotic domestic local was a method the gov used to help downplay this plague. From my impression only those were found to be infected with the plague won said “prize” and were then shipped off to another place far from society to die in silence. That got me thinking about the residents of point lookout. I don’t know if it’s ever explained why they look the way they do but the symptoms the terminal entry lists, tumors, hemorrhaging, sure seem to describe the denizens off point lookout. My little theory is that point lookout, a place with very little infrastructure, was the place that infected individuals were sent. Perhaps contained in the prison camp we find in the game or some other facility nearby but not within the exploreable area and after the bombs they escaped and eventually devolved along with the swamp residents into the beasts they are today. Just a theory I thought of while watching
guy c there’s a place called turtledove detention camp or something along those lines in the swamp, but it has no evidence of any plague infected prisoners, just a Chinese internment and interrogation camp I think. That’s partly why I think it would have to have been a location not included in the explorable area of point lookout since turtledove doesn’t seem to have any relation to the new plague
I think maybe Point Lookout was that exotic locale. They send everyone with the New Plague there. It’s like a tuberculosis island but in the Fallout universe.
A nice bit of "continuity" on New Vegas' part: The cut terminal entries from Operation Anchorage states the Chinese Stealth Armor appears to be a *more recent prototype* of the suits worn by the infiltrators from the Hoover Sabotage. This would explain why the New Vegas armor from Hoover Dam can't generate a stealth field, while the armor we find in the Outcast bunker in the Capital Wasteland does, as that suit was a more recent model. Also, keep in mind that there is one room in the dam that is partially blocked off by rubble. Perhaps that was a stairway leading to a now inaccessible level of the structure. Maybe a level that contains the ruined remnants of a bio-lab...

Honestly, and feel free to agree or disagree, but Oxhorn is one of the few of my subscriptions that I can watch an entire 30+ minute video and come away feeling enthralled by each minute. If you do happen to ever read this, Oxhorn, I want to say that the content you put out for Fallout and it's extended universe is some of the most in depth, entertaining, and enjoying to watch.
I have never played fallout. And I won't. It's not my type of game. The gameplay in my mind feels kinda clonky and I can't really immerse myself into a world of such fiction, I'm more drawn to Milsims and anything ghats as close to life as possible. However I love every one of oxhorn videos, they are super entertaining and his commentary makes one feel like your on a journey through a different world more so than the (at least disregarding fallout 4 and 76) dated textures and ragdolls of the games ever could. At least for me. Hearing him talk balut this world as if it's real makes it so much more believable than running around leftklicking and pressing e all the time. It's nice to just hear the amazing stories back isle and obsidian created here, without needing to have game limitations take you out of the immersion.
This is what I always believed the new plague to be. Extreme contusions and massive haemorrhaging is exactly what you'll get when police / any other government agency detains you and you "slip in the bathroom". The vacation in exotic locale also sounds much better than concentration camp.

@@YinPhinLim stealth armor doesn't beat power armor. Two entirely different purposes. And the Armor could be there for another reason. Much like they were after securing oil for themselves. There is a good reason to try and sabotage the dam. Hoover Dam actually feeds power to a rather large chunk of of the power needs here in the U.S. Shutting it down not only shuts down power for millions. But it also destabalizes the rest of the power grid as well. The Dam itself is built to last a good couple hundred years at the least as well... but it does have a maintenance issue. marine life that would attach itself to the intakes and certain workings of the dam would forcibly shut it down in a couple decades. Which would mean a lot of work to get it even partially back up and running and finding it in a rather poor state 200 years later.

I've had a "theory" for a while that The New Plague is likely why Ghouls are a thing. Ghoulification doesn't effect every one, but what if those who had the new plague are the ones that became ghouls? It is quite possible that many people never showed symptoms and recovered over very minor cases. Just the fact that there was virtually no knowledge of ghouls or that effect on people until shortly before the bombs fell, the earliest being Edie Winters, who mentions ghoulification being only recently discovered and researched. Though I don't have much more than that and the sterilization being linked to ghouls as any further support to this hypothesis.

I think it was supposed to be a combination of fallout-polluted runoff, disease (such as the New Plague) and, of course, a good old fashioned lack of a diverse gene pool.

According to van buren, it was called "The Blue Flu" because people were suffocating due to clogged airways, thus their extremities turning blue. it's entirely possible that Duncan could have been affected with the disease Med-Tek developed to affect children and teens, and that Med-Tek was already testing on the populace, or adults can be infected, but are asymptomatic carriers. Though that may not be the case, seeing as that guy, Sinclair, has a buddy who got infected. It's totally possible that his friend was a teenager, but it's more likely that it was an adult. Though the Fallout 4 survival guide seems to play it like the disease that Med-Tek was developing. It would make a lot of sense if Duncan was suffering from new plague. The only cause I can think of for the boils to turn blue would be severe bruising, caused by the swelling of the pus inside to break nearby capillaries. Though from what MacCready says, his son isn't bleeding externally. There's a chance that the new plague survived the war, but was mutated by radiation over the course of 200 years. An alter form could cause contusions, boils, fever, and weakness that Duncan has. So in that case Prevent likely wouldn't work. Also big question time, but when Curie made the Vault 88 cure, did she also cure new plague??? or since limit 1-15 was a big government secret, was she not allowed? Fucked up if true

Reporting was required when you found someone infected. Registering was asked to be done in general so they can build a dataspace of people for further studying, and to encourage people to register, they offered the prices, 'cose they knew people were so paranoid (sometimes for good reason) that they might not give their medical info and whatnot just freely for the betterment of medical knowledge. Sure they probably registered those who got reported for being infected, but I doubt the diseased were eligible to win the travel-ticket...
I wonder if instead of sweeping the virus under the rug, the swamp folk didn’t know/ didnt have access to a vaccine or treatment. Meaning common folk were able to be treated by the military, but the reclusive swamp people just didn’t know. The US government probably sent out this volunteer group because the situation died down, and they had more pressing matters to focus on. This theory would explain why the volunteers had no interest in the townsfolk of Point Lookout, why the plague wasn’t in the headlines, and why no pre-war person spoke of it. If they arrived and found the town infested with the New Plague, one would think they’d contain that first, not get frustrated that they can’t find the swamp folk. Also, a 20k death count is pretty low for a country of around 400mil in the mid 21st century, meaning the new plague was either not a dangerous virus at all or it was highly treatable or even curable. Either way, this is an incredible video on a subject that should be expanded upon in upcoming fallout games.

Everyone's pointing out the parallels to COVID-19, but can we talk about how the government response to the New Plague ended up being slightly better than the real US government's response to COVID-19? I mean, both responses were patently terrible, but at least the Fallout universe US Government put together some kind of national programme, even if it was canned after a few years. I'm not even sure the US IRL got that far. It would be interesting to see confirmed case numbers for the New Plague, as looking at deaths and impact alone COVID simultaneously more virulent and less deadly. If the New Plague only killed ~20,000 people over ~10 years, where COVID-19 has (at the time of writing) killed just under 380,000 people in the US over the course of ~10 months, it would seem to me to indicate that the New Plague had difficulty spreading throughout the populace (the implication seems to be that the majority of people that contract it die). Perhaps the New Plague's more obvious symptoms make it less effective at spreading, as people could tell more easily who was and wasn't sick. We reached the sort of deaths we see with the New Plague after only a month or so of COVID-19 being in the United States, with around half-a-million active cases, so again that indicates to me that New Plague wasn't particularly effective at spreading through a population, at least as compared to COVID-19.
Because the US did put together a national program to deal with COVID-19. It was effective, given the constraints the feds had to operate within. Don't forget, we're not Euros. Our states are effectively your countries, and they have a great deal of autonomy aside from being geographically massive.

I would argue to the extent any response before this point was substantially hampered by the politics of the party in power at the time, and could not reasonably be called a “programme”. I focused on the federal response (or lack thereof) at the time because I feel it's the most directly comparable. Certainly, individual states had a greater role in the COVID-19 response than their counterparts in Fallout did to the New Plague, but that fact wasn't particularly relevant to my point. Finally, as an aside, it's very amusing to me that you assume I'm a European. As an American, I feel the US COVID-19 response is a national embarrassment, with per capita deaths substantially higher than peer countries. You say the response was effective given the constraints of the time, and I would partially agree with you, but I would say one of the significant constraints on the federal government was political BS.

The writing of Fallout 4 tries very hard to make sure Nate or Nora barely mention their pre war lives (yes, they do occasionaly) so that they may feel more like audience surrogate "blank slates" for the player to indentify through. (..Which is a huge squandered opportunity both to devellop pre war fallout US and to devellop them as less flat character but what yer gonna do.)

Gotta echo the others and repeat myself from a few years ago when I say: your lore videos are some of the most thoughtful and thorough lore videos out there. I appreciate your time and dedication to the subject, especially since I'm about to have some fun trying to write a campaign for the Fallout: Wasteland Warfare table top module. Your videos are paramount in my lore research. While I wouldn't say that the case you lay is 100% air-tight (as if we could ever be so lucky without direct dev input), but might as well be. There is no other clear explanation for the majority of these things on their own. They only hold any weight when they're tied together. It makes one wonder as to the nature of the contagion itself. What was the the nature of the plague; was it bacterial, fungal, viral? And if the disease is so deadly, why give up on a cure? Did such an event lay the foundation for the formation of the Enclave? Was there some sort of secrect mitigating measure developed from the initial PVP research that caused the U.S. government to decide that they could refocus their resources on the war effort? So many questions, so many posibilities.

For me, Fallout 3 was my introduction to the Fallout universe, so I had never heard about a New Plague until I found the terminal entries at Point Lookout. In my mind, it all seemed like a tricksy way for the government to manipulate people into reporting someone who may be a communist sympathizer. I mean they may not want to tell on their own friends or family members, but if having “new ideals, such as socialism” is a symptom of some horrific, contagious disease then someone needs to be told right away. Or at least before the next ice cream social!
So great work shedding light on this subject. It is much more interesting/disturbing than I ever imagined.
I always had similar thoughts about the New Plague.
As soon as I read the line about new ideals and Socialism, I figured it to be more Governmental fear mongering rather than an actual physical malady. Nothing more than rampant Joe McCarthyism at its worst. All the other symptoms probably came from being beaten by other 'more patriotic' Americans who didn't like what the 'plague victim' had to say or during an interrogation at one of those safety/military checkpoints.
That's why the first step to fighting it was to APPROACH a suspected victim and then ISOLATE them. There wasn't anything biological to fear catching. But it would insure that anyone else with similar ideals growing in their minds would be less inclined to express them with anyone else.
To be honest, after years of delving into the lore of the Fallout Universe, I find myself thinking that Chinese Communism would have been far better to live under than the so-called US Democracy as described. At least the Chinese didn't seem to be using their own citizens as fodder for experimentation or handing the populace mounds of horse shit on an hourly basis.

He isn't said to have any symptoms in common with the plague, and it's only through speculation that the blue boils are compared to contusions or external hemorrhaging. Why wouldn't pre war doctors have called telltale blue boils by what they are instead of a generic term like "contusions"?
Really, contusions and external hemorrhaging are in line with being physically assaulted, and profuse sweating would come from being anxious or nervous, like a spy or communist sympathizer might be in pre war America. Macready's kid likely doesn't have the New Plague, because it isn't a plague at all. They might as well have called it the Red Plague, because it's really just communism.

The terminal about registration gives me the sense that this “prize” of a vacation to an exotic domestic local was a method the gov used to help downplay this plague. From my impression only those were found to be infected with the plague won said “prize” and were then shipped off to another place far from society to die in silence. That got me thinking about the residents of point lookout. I don’t know if it’s ever explained why they look the way they do but the symptoms the terminal entry lists, tumors, hemorrhaging, sure seem to describe the denizens off point lookout. My little theory is that point lookout, a place with very little infrastructure, was the place that infected individuals were sent. Perhaps contained in the prison camp we find in the game or some other facility nearby but not within the exploreable area and after the bombs they escaped and eventually devolved along with the swamp residents into the beasts they are today. Just a theory I thought of while watching

I think maybe Point Lookout was that exotic locale. They send everyone with the New Plague there. It’s like a tuberculosis island but in the Fallout universe.

The cut terminal entries from Operation Anchorage states the Chinese Stealth Armor appears to be a *more recent prototype* of the suits worn by the infiltrators from the Hoover Sabotage. This would explain why the New Vegas armor from Hoover Dam can't generate a stealth field, while the armor we find in the Outcast bunker in the Capital Wasteland does, as that suit was a more recent model.
Also, keep in mind that there is one room in the dam that is partially blocked off by rubble. Perhaps that was a stairway leading to a now inaccessible level of the structure. Maybe a level that contains the ruined remnants of a bio-lab...

I have never played fallout. And I won't. It's not my type of game. The gameplay in my mind feels kinda clonky and I can't really immerse myself into a world of such fiction, I'm more drawn to Milsims and anything ghats as close to life as possible. However I love every one of oxhorn videos, they are super entertaining and his commentary makes one feel like your on a journey through a different world more so than the (at least disregarding fallout 4 and 76) dated textures and ragdolls of the games ever could. At least for me. Hearing him talk balut this world as if it's real makes it so much more believable than running around leftklicking and pressing e all the time. It's nice to just hear the amazing stories back isle and obsidian created here, without needing to have game limitations take you out of the immersion.

The first few entries of the "Benevolence" logs gave me a strong impression of a ruse to cover beating up and sending away socialism sympathizers.
This is what I always believed the new plague to be. Extreme contusions and massive haemorrhaging is exactly what you'll get when police / any other government agency detains you and you "slip in the bathroom". The vacation in exotic locale also sounds much better than concentration camp.

And the Armor could be there for another reason. Much like they were after securing oil for themselves. There is a good reason to try and sabotage the dam. Hoover Dam actually feeds power to a rather large chunk of of the power needs here in the U.S. Shutting it down not only shuts down power for millions. But it also destabalizes the rest of the power grid as well. The Dam itself is built to last a good couple hundred years at the least as well... but it does have a maintenance issue. marine life that would attach itself to the intakes and certain workings of the dam would forcibly shut it down in a couple decades. Which would mean a lot of work to get it even partially back up and running and finding it in a rather poor state 200 years later.

I've had a "theory" for a while that The New Plague is likely why Ghouls are a thing. Ghoulification doesn't effect every one, but what if those who had the new plague are the ones that became ghouls? It is quite possible that many people never showed symptoms and recovered over very minor cases. Just the fact that there was virtually no knowledge of ghouls or that effect on people until shortly before the bombs fell, the earliest being Edie Winters, who mentions ghoulification being only recently discovered and researched. Though I don't have much more than that and the sterilization being linked to ghouls as any further support to this hypothesis.

I think it was supposed to be a combination of fallout-polluted runoff, disease (such as the New Plague) and, of course, a good old fashioned lack of a diverse gene pool.
Mushroom spores I think and chunks of brain missing, however a virus leaving the countries vulnerable could have led to the bombs dropping.
I've literally done everything possible to do in fo3, and my 1st reaction upon you entering those tents was to instinctively try and grab the leather belt, surgical tubing and crutch to craft weapons

According to van buren, it was called "The Blue Flu" because people were suffocating due to clogged airways, thus their extremities turning blue. it's entirely possible that Duncan could have been affected with the disease Med-Tek developed to affect children and teens, and that Med-Tek was already testing on the populace, or adults can be infected, but are asymptomatic carriers.
Though that may not be the case, seeing as that guy, Sinclair, has a buddy who got infected. It's totally possible that his friend was a teenager, but it's more likely that it was an adult. Though the Fallout 4 survival guide seems to play it like the disease that Med-Tek was developing.
It would make a lot of sense if Duncan was suffering from new plague. The only cause I can think of for the boils to turn blue would be severe bruising, caused by the swelling of the pus inside to break nearby capillaries. Though from what MacCready says, his son isn't bleeding externally. There's a chance that the new plague survived the war, but was mutated by radiation over the course of 200 years. An alter form could cause contusions, boils, fever, and weakness that Duncan has. So in that case Prevent likely wouldn't work.
Also big question time, but when Curie made the Vault 88 cure, did she also cure new plague??? or since limit 1-15 was a big government secret, was she not allowed? Fucked up if true

Yep, less than 1000 deaths a year in a country the size of the US is nothing,...20,000+ die of seasonal flu every year and no nationwide precautions are required IRL. The New Plague didn't justify Federal intervention, but provided some useful ant-Chinese propaganda...no doubt the Chinese had viral weapon projects of their own, just like IRL with their labs in Wuhan weaponizing pandemics like Covid-19.

Registering was asked to be done in general so they can build a dataspace of people for further studying, and to encourage people to register, they offered the prices, 'cose they knew people were so paranoid (sometimes for good reason) that they might not give their medical info and whatnot just freely for the betterment of medical knowledge. Sure they probably registered those who got reported for being infected, but I doubt the diseased were eligible to win the travel-ticket...
I wonder if instead of sweeping the virus under the rug, the swamp folk didn’t know/ didnt have access to a vaccine or treatment. Meaning common folk were able to be treated by the military, but the reclusive swamp people just didn’t know. The US government probably sent out this volunteer group because the situation died down, and they had more pressing matters to focus on. This theory would explain why the volunteers had no interest in the townsfolk of Point Lookout, why the plague wasn’t in the headlines, and why no pre-war person spoke of it. If they arrived and found the town infested with the New Plague, one would think they’d contain that first, not get frustrated that they can’t find the swamp folk. Also, a 20k death count is pretty low for a country of around 400mil in the mid 21st century, meaning the new plague was either not a dangerous virus at all or it was highly treatable or even curable. Either way, this is an incredible video on a subject that should be expanded upon in upcoming fallout games.

Everyone's pointing out the parallels to COVID-19, but can we talk about how the government response to the New Plague ended up being slightly better than the real US government's response to COVID-19? I mean, both responses were patently terrible, but at least the Fallout universe US Government put together some kind of national programme, even if it was canned after a few years. I'm not even sure the US IRL got that far.
It would be interesting to see confirmed case numbers for the New Plague, as looking at deaths and impact alone COVID simultaneously more virulent and less deadly. If the New Plague only killed ~20,000 people over ~10 years, where COVID-19 has (at the time of writing) killed just under 380,000 people in the US over the course of ~10 months, it would seem to me to indicate that the New Plague had difficulty spreading throughout the populace (the implication seems to be that the majority of people that contract it die). Perhaps the New Plague's more obvious symptoms make it less effective at spreading, as people could tell more easily who was and wasn't sick. We reached the sort of deaths we see with the New Plague after only a month or so of COVID-19 being in the United States, with around half-a-million active cases, so again that indicates to me that New Plague wasn't particularly effective at spreading through a population, at least as compared to COVID-19.
Because the US did put together a national program to deal with COVID-19. It was effective, given the constraints the feds had to operate within.
Don't forget, we're not Euros. Our states are effectively your countries, and they have a great deal of autonomy aside from being geographically massive.
@@stevenschnepp576Because TH-cam obfuscates this information, I will tell you that my comment was made on the 12th of January 2021, before any real federal COVID-19 response had been implemented. I would argue to the extent any response before this point was substantially hampered by the politics of the party in power at the time, and could not reasonably be called a “programme”.
I focused on the federal response (or lack thereof) at the time because I feel it's the most directly comparable. Certainly, individual states had a greater role in the COVID-19 response than their counterparts in Fallout did to the New Plague, but that fact wasn't particularly relevant to my point.
Finally, as an aside, it's very amusing to me that you assume I'm a European. As an American, I feel the US COVID-19 response is a national embarrassment, with per capita deaths substantially higher than peer countries. You say the response was effective given the constraints of the time, and I would partially agree with you, but I would say one of the significant constraints on the federal government was political BS.

The writing of Fallout 4 tries very hard to make sure Nate or Nora barely mention their pre war lives (yes, they do occasionaly) so that they may feel more like audience surrogate "blank slates" for the player to indentify through.
(..Which is a huge squandered opportunity both to devellop pre war fallout US and to devellop them as less flat character but what yer gonna do.)
@@s.m.2523 initially that was set up for roleplaying purpouses yet they had their own lives and choices (ex being Nora is a lawyer and Nate was a retired career soldier). Yet the pvp was big enough to it should have had an impact on their lives at one point. I seriously doubt they dont mention it cuz of the Synth theory

Gotta echo the others and repeat myself from a few years ago when I say: your lore videos are some of the most thoughtful and thorough lore videos out there. I appreciate your time and dedication to the subject, especially since I'm about to have some fun trying to write a campaign for the Fallout: Wasteland Warfare table top module. Your videos are paramount in my lore research.
While I wouldn't say that the case you lay is 100% air-tight (as if we could ever be so lucky without direct dev input), but might as well be. There is no other clear explanation for the majority of these things on their own. They only hold any weight when they're tied together.
It makes one wonder as to the nature of the contagion itself. What was the the nature of the plague; was it bacterial, fungal, viral? And if the disease is so deadly, why give up on a cure? Did such an event lay the foundation for the formation of the Enclave? Was there some sort of secrect mitigating measure developed from the initial PVP research that caused the U.S. government to decide that they could refocus their resources on the war effort? So many questions, so many posibilities.
