Very helpful video, helped me fix mine & it was the bass switch as well! Similarly, after a bit of contact cleaner & just putting it back together again - it worked! I didn't need to totally dismantle & check solder points but helpful nonetheless. Beautiful amps & looks good in black too! Cheers.
Hi there got replacement LEDs for power vu. Changed successfully. Now the right vu needle is slightly below the 0.01 and not level with the left needle on 0.01. How do I alter it please? Great video. Thank you.
I had a Technics amplifier very similar to this one back when I was in high school, it was an SU-V2. A few differences with mine, it was silver not black, and it had fluorescent VU meters instead of the needle VU’s. Only problem was that by the time my father handed this amplifier down to me, only one input worked and that was the AUX input. Would have liked to get that amp fixed but I just kept using the amp on AUX input until the amplifier stopped working all together. It was a great amplifier though, 40 watts per channel I believe. 🙂
I own the smaller Z1, beside 7300 (discrete out) . It has STK2028. It has no problem with low impedance speakers (4 ohms) as long as you do not short the output. It will just lower it's power on 4 ohms, while on 8 ohms it will go normally. It is "safe operating area" protection. Drive with it some jbl lx 55, and can go really loud, no overheat. So it is a good amp. 6 ohms are also good, will not forge The amp. Even a discrete amp with relay may be roasted by a short.
The problem is this electronic circuit may prevent a 'pop' coming from the speakers when the amplifier is powered up, but in case the output stage shorts out, it will not protect the speakers.
Yes that's right but I have known speaker protection fail as well. This amplifier is clearly from Technics budget end obviously trying to save on manufacturing costs.Technics did adopt a belt and braces protection system were they removed the drive from the output stage which protects it and the speaker system. This was used in the SU3500 an earlier amplifier from around 1976.They also went back to this system on much later amplifiers as well. I have however replaced output chips which have blown even with this system on a Technics SUA900 from the 1990's.
I have this one but the right channel seem broken. Won’t work at all and nothing moves in the right DB window. Have to use left channel for both my speakers and play via main/remote at the same time. Wish I could repair it because it looks so neat
Did you know if it's possible to use a 2x4mmq speaker cable? Mine won't insert in the speakers output, simply it don't lock...maybe some plug or adapter? Please help thanks
The speaker outputs indeed are only designed for thin wire. Use short pieces of thin wire in the connector and connect the other end to your good speaker wires.
Technics really was into making some really short components back in that time... My RS-B18 tape deck is as short as this amp, and I recently got one of their amps from the same time period in for repair, and it was really short too. Saves a lot of space it you have an all-Technics system, but it's pretty much impossible to stack these together with different gear.
Ah Technics.... You are always the same. I have one su 810 and the tape button messes with the L R output. I currently don't have any contact cleaner. Can you suggest me something that will do the job?
Needs 4mm speaker posts. Too many of these type of amps use those Block power amp modules from that time. They have built in protection, but can still blow & you can't get them.
I now use a harman/kardon HK 980 Stereo Amplifier in my stereo set up this is a beast though your small amp is very nice to lucky it did not need much work.
I got the same amp and i got a problem There is no connected speakers and when i turn amp on pointer of left channel jumps at 100db and stands there, after i turn amp off right channel also jumps at 100db and then both are slowly going back to 0 I m not sure is it burned or what. Sorry for asking, maybe it s stupid question, i m beginner in this so i have to ask someone.
What kind of electro-CRIMINAL would send such a beautiful unit to the dumpster? And I appreciate a nice compact vintage looking amplifier in such a small package. The fact that's using an STK integrated hybrid just speaks for the advancement in technology and integration of the day. Great little unit that I am confident can be miles better than anything on Amazon in the 250 EUR range.
The STK hybrid circuits are not bad, I never had an issue with how they sound. However, I did find they run rather hot, and there is no protection at all. @@DrCassette my tutor in college asked my class in late 2008 "which company is Technics a brand of" and I said Matsushita, and him and my classmates laughed and he "corrected" me and said "no, it's Panasonic". After looking it up later I was kinda annoyed, because the company legal name had literally only just been changed to Panasonic Corporation to reflect the Panasonic brand, following talks with the Matsushita family...

Unless you're a technician stay clear of old stereo equipment.
That's nonsense. A lot of the smaller faults in old stereo equipment can easily be repaired. Of course, all safety rules must be observed carefully. Unplug the device when working, make sure to stay well away from any parts carrying mains voltage when testing.
