Buy chicks, locally or mail order. You'll start seeing eggs in 6-8 weeks. After that, you'll get almost 1 egg/hen/day. Eat the excess males. You'll likely get much better hatch rates with eggs laid by your hens vs mail order eggs, anyway.

@@shalioplantation3989 Great, good luck! You can mail order quail chicks, same as chickens. Many of the same hatcheries sell them. If the minimum number to ship is more than you want to keep as breeders, simply raise them all, keep the healthiest, fastest growing, earliest layers for broodstock, and butcher the rest. Quail really are easy.

When i hatch quail eggs i leave temp on 102 first 1-15 days and i drop it to 99 on 15-17 days i had 97-98% hatch rate. The reason why i leave temp so high is because even when i have to move eggs they will still keep the temp up and wont lose any temp at all! Also i do 75% humidity first 10 days and the rest of the days i do 60%. If you have anything under 90% hatch success do this method you can thank me later..

    Kevin ,
You are quite correct about the possibility of late hatching. The eggs can and do run the gamut between early and late . As most everyone that hatches eggs knows, chicken eggs take 21 days to hatch . My eggs began hatching very early on day 20 ! By day 21 about half of the eggs were already hatched. And the hatching rate was slowing down. Day 22 and several eggs had not hatched. Day 23 and a couple more hatched. Day 24 and three more eggs hatched. Day 25 ! And another egg hatched. Although it was not properly developed and died after one day . With that it was time to stop.
Hatching eggs surely is not an exact procedure.

In my experience with chickens, those weird, not quite right eggs happen when they get laid on the poop on the floor of the coop rather than in the nice, clean nesting box. I think it’s probably the ammonia eating through the bloom and into the shell. I’ve picked up a few over the years that look fine on the surface that’s facing up and are all like that underneath.

Great tips Kevin! One thing I would mention is that hatching viability and fertility are two different things, a fertile egg may become unviable after 7-10 days of storage, although the way you describe how you store them, as long as they are kept cool and turned a couple times a day should give you good viability for at least 14 days. I have had great success even up to 21 days storing chicken eggs the way you describe, with minimal decrease in hatch rate on older eggs, when I was trying to get a full incubator load in the winter when they weren't laying a lot. (My incubator holds 288 chicken eggs, lol) I generally try to keep them only 7-10 days before setting them though.

Hi Kevin, my 7 year old grandson watched a kids video about hatching quail eggs. He was so excited to try it that he convinced me to go for it. Since his mother refused to do it at their house, I decided to do it in my little apartment. We don’t live in the same state, so we’re FaceTiming the whole project.
I used your video to guide me. Thank you for the great instructions. So I purchased all of the equipment and quail eggs and got to it. Today is day 14, so I’ll be increasing the humidity and removing the eggs from the turning device. I’m curious to see if any of them will hatch. I’ll let you know. Meanwhile, I don’t know where to purchase the food that they need to eat. Could you please let me know where I can get that. Also, on day 13, the incubator sprung partially open while I was out. The temperature dropped to 26.8C from the usual 36.8C proper temperature. I don’t know how long it was that low. It may have been a few hours. Should I be very concerned about that? I guess we’ll find out. Thanks for your help.

I love this. I know I'll never do this but knowledge is power. I love your channel.. I really liked the chicken series and watching you weigh and calculate the feed and the cost of raising them. Okay I admit it, I'm a nerd about these things too. Keep the good stuff going. I actually check every morning for new videos. Thanks and God bless. Respectfully, Karen Petitti

I would give unusual eggs a chance and candle them after a few days. Because what if you have a hen that lays unusual eggs due to a genetic mutation and the offspring do that too? That would enable you to create a new variety.

Please provide dimension from bottom of feeder to center of feed hole. Looks like about 2 inches but I'd rather not guess. Also do the coturnix quail hold well for bird dog training like Bob white quail do? All the breeders around nc for game farms are raising Bob white so I'm wondering if the coturnix tend to run away or fly instead of holding for a point. Any knowledge about this please share. Great video.

I'm brand new to my quest on raising some chickens for eggs so I have a lot of dumb questions. Hopefully someone can help out with this one. I am dumbfounded by the time between collecting the egg from the coop (daily I would assume), to waiting a week to incubate them. You said to keep them in cool temperatures like in a cooler or a cool room but I thought fertilized eggs should be in a warm area and that's why naturally mama would sit on them from the time she lays them. I am thinking once I get my baby RIR hens to go with my move in RIR rooster, that I may like to hatch a few eggs now and again myself where I would be the mama like you are doing with your quails. I'm just curious how they survive a week in a cooler instead of being put straight into an incubator when you pull them from coop. I'm so sorry this is so long. I'm so inquisitive and I really want to know all I can before I get my rooster some girlfriends. First video I've seen of yours and it was super helpful. (Just curious about the week between collecting and incubating...LOL!) New suscriber! Off to binge some of your other videos now! :-P

Thank you for your informative video. I have three quail eggs that I've kept warm for past couple of days & had a few eggs in the refrigerator since. Can I still try to hatch some of the eggs from the fridge? Also, I've been waiting for my incubator to arrive, so I've been using a heating pad on the three I'm trying to hatch. The heating pad turns off every couple of hours, and they've probably gone without heat for a couple of hours here in Socal, do you think they'll still be ok? Also, I didn't have them tilting pointy side down for the first two days, do you think they still have a chance of hatching?

The dirty eggs didn’t make sense to me. Does washing in warm water reduce probability of hatching?
The other reject criteria: cracked, larger than normal size, abnormal appearance made sense.
Was also surprised at storing eggs before incubating.

yeah my hatches have sucked, first, 2 of 60 and second 7 of 60 humitity can only get to 65 on lock down, second batch one had goofy leg the it went down threw holes, and stopped the fan in the bottom of this incubator brrdddddd noise, and there was a drop of blood from that one I think im gonna complain to manufacturer of incubator for that one, I wanted to open it but you cant ...rrrrgggg.

Try incubating after 4 days of collecting. The longer the egg sit before you incubate has a less.. chance of hatching.

Making them lay over winter puts alot of stress on their bodies...

    • @amariahg5450
      @amariahg5450 4 ปีที่แล้ว

For birds that will *maybe* live 2-3 years, I don't think it's a huge deal. Quail are quickly replaced/rotated through, so laying through one or two winters isn't going to make a big difference over long term - they only live one or two winters. It's more of a concern for chickens and ducks, since they live more than 3 years and you want them to stay at peak health longer. Quail can start laying in 6 weeks, chickens take at minimum 4-5 months.

Bought valley quail eggs from a distributor. Put them in the incubator about 8 hours after they arrived by USPS who threw the package on the porch, likely causing the 5/6 eggs that were cracked. On day 19, removed the eggs from the automatic egg rotator and put them back in the hova bator incubator. Increased humidity to 65%. Have two digital thermometers. Incubator has been at 100.02 for 19 days and now at 98.5 degrees set on day 20. This is day 22 - no movement and the humidity is now at 58%. There are 100 eggs. Getting concerned about humidity level and the fact nothing is happening. Curious is you have any advice and/or if I need to provide any additional information.
    Thanks kindly!
