    and little did that audience in that church know at that time they were witnessing an acoustic guitar genius quickly coming into his deserved world recognition one day. He's just brilliant.

    This is the best version I've heard of this song, and I've listened to ALL of the versions. Beautiful voice; beautiful playing.

      I was kinda upset when I read this. I thought, 'who could possibly do it better than Jimmie Rodgers ' or 'who could do it better than Merle'? Now I am not so sure. Billy is pretty damn close, if not a hair better

      I just listened to merle haggard's 'same train, different time', again. Sorry Billy, while you sound more like Jimmie, no one sounds more sad and forlorn than Merle. Billy is getting close, or at least he was 8 years ago. I know he won a Grammy, but I think he may be straying from his roots
