How Much Will This Camper Weigh? || Part Four

  • You asked in the comments; we answered in the video. When it's all said and done, we anticipate this new camper will weigh LESS than my old setup did. Obviously we won't have an exact number until we roll it onto a scale, but we're optimistic.
Another big question people have asked is how the Tacoma would be modified to handle the new camper. Fortunately those modifications were done prior to the Vagabond camper, so the truck is already ready - suspension wise. A few years ago the truck underwent the 63 swap - a custom job of relocating the leaf spring mounting points in order to fit full-size Chevy Silverado leaf springs underneath the Tacoma. This major modification handled the weight of the Vagabond, buildout, and rear bumper perfectly. Therefore I have zero doubts that my truck will mind the new camper one bit.
This episode was far more informational than transformational. A few things were added to the skeleton but nothing of "Wow" this time around. However, the frame is just about finished and then the fun work begins. Things are going to start ramping up!!

I think people really underestimate how big a full size truck actually is and what problems that can bring on the trail. I cant agree more with you choosing this build on the Tacoma platform. Im stoked for you and happy to watch this journey. Cheers!

Hey, Girl, you go for it! Planning your dream for an overlanding vehicle/home...isn't easy. While most folks probably know much more about vehicle mods than I...I truly believe their comments are intended to insure you git what you want/intend. Watching you closely...will see you on the road after I retire...I am really looking forward to it! TCGB.

I have a 98 k1500 excab Silverado. Stock hgt, overload springs, coil over r., Bilstein f, 5.7, canopy, carpet kit, cargo rack, recovery, kit supplies, all I need for a 78y/o. One happy old man camper. Plus, k1500 crew cab, GMC Sierra K1500, and 2015 K1500 dbl cab, both Z71s. 98 way off road, newer ones....moving gear fron 98 to 2015 this spring.

There will always be nah sayers in any build. It sucks but unfortunately some people are just that way. You could have built it on a Unimog, Fuso or one of the other large 4wd platforms and you would have people complaining "that it's too big for trails" or "thats way overkill for one person" etc. You can't please everyone, nor should you try. It's Your truck set up for You, by You.
On that note, what a fantastic build design you guys came up with. I'm very excited for you and can't wait to see the final product. Thanks for bringing us along on the build. Mike

Great. build! Following to see where this goes. No question here about the Taco. It’s your truck, ‘Nuff said. My Gladiator has a very short bed so using it as living space presents challenges, but, it’s my truck and I make it work. Keep it up!

I love that you are doing it on your Tacoma. I wish I had kept my Dad’s 1995 Xcab and rebuilt the engine or swapped it to a diesel and built it up.
So can Dan and the crew build something like yours (or exactly like) on a 3rd Gen Access Cab?

You go girl. I have a 2010 extended cab Tacoma I am building and was planning on doing a flat bed wedge camper. Love what you are doing hope you don't mind me using some of your ideas. Question are you going to have a center drawer like the Aussies?

    • @BadassBrunette

Center drawer off the back of the flatbed? We're not sure yet. Depends on the spare tire situation.

I hear you on people asking why you're doing it to a Tacoma. I bought a 2nd gen reg cab to build up. You think it's bad when the full size crowd questions why you're doing that to a DCSB Taco, I get asked the same question by people WITH built up DC and AC Tacoma's. It's all about wants and needs. I wanted the shortest WB Tacoma and a 6' bed. My kids are out of the house and my wife is done with wheeling and camping. It's just me and the dog. I don't need much interior space. You live out of yours, I get it, you need the space. Mine is just a toy and only gets used for adventures. If it's what you like and want, and it fits your needs, then why not? Thank you for the update.

Why a Tacoma? Why not a Tacoma? Now that I know what type of suspension you have for the camper it makes total sense. The weight is not an issue at all.
I can't wait to see it done. Just in time for Spring time. :)

I've heard mostly negative things about Espars. For that high of cost and the issues they have, I'm sticking with diesel. They're consistent, reliable and I never had issues with my first diesel heater.

Could you tell what was the crossection size of main aluminum framing ? Something like 2x1 inch with 0.078inch thick walls ?
And what was the siz of intermediate connections?

Your truck should be fine. But for people wanting a giant truck camper talk to the manufacturer to confirm the capabilities of your truck configuration. I have seen horror stories about people who bend their frame of a 1 ton truck because their camper is to heavy. Those Toyota trucks can do alot with the right upgrades.

Wow, 10minutes of talk and nothing was answered in regards to weight. Whatever is built, just hope you are safe. Your individual truck was engineered for a certain performance profile. You changed a bunch of things and I heard no specifics so that just says people are winging it and hoping for the best.
You rear axle has a max rating. Your leaf springs have ratings. Your coil springs have ratings. shocks have dampening profile, tires....so on and so on. All those things matter and winging it is not engineering it. Just be safe, assume nothing, test slowly & safely. You can keep your vehicle, just know the limits of each component.
Your video just shows you are just guessing and best wishes with the new build.

  • @chrisdaniel1339
    @chrisdaniel1339 ปีที่แล้ว

That camper looks to be too heavily built, you could have welded it out of 90 degree 2"x2" angle aluminum and still been exceptionally strong, there was no need for square tube throughout. You could have saved more thank half the weight of the current camper frame using extruded angle. A camper framed out of aluminum angle then can have drop in pieces of insulating foam core composite skin panels for the walls, which are super strong, ridged, heavily insulative, and lightweight. The lighter you make the camper the more weight you can a lot to other items, bigger battery bank, more solar, larger fresh water tank, slightly larger fridge, etc. The other issue I noticed is that the frame of the camper is a thermal bridge from the exterior to the interior, skins or thin paneling will not stop heat or cold from moving through the alum from outside to inside. If you are in an accident and your Yoda is found to be over the GVWR you may be deemed at fault if you could not stop in time or avoid the other vehicle in time. There is a YT channel called 'Everlanders' where Jason built his own aluminum and composite panel overland camper if you want to see what I mentioned. Good luck :)
