    Thanks for the video. I’m still deciding whether to do the Full Stack or the Front End Tech Degree. I am a complete beginner looking at my options. I haven’t made any projects or made a start to learning HTML and CSS yet.

      So if you haven't even tried coding yet,I'd probably go try out freeCodeCamp and see if you even like it before throwing any money into your education. If you know you like it then I'd start with the front end tech degree. Full stack's going to focus more on javascript and one of the biggest mistakes entry level devs make is just glossing over html and css and going straight to javascript. Then when they go to an interview and get asked to build something simple with html and css, they struggle to do it.

    I read in one of your comments "I didn't finish before I got a job but you do get a certificate to show". It's very nice to see how fast you got a job. My question is: what was your background? Do you study for example Computer Science in parallel?

    • @self-taughtdev
      @self-taughtdev  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I do have a Bachelor of Science, but it's in Marketing. I don't think it's had any effect on me getting a job (Even non-tech jobs). No one I interviewed with ever said anything about it.
      So I don't have any formal education with tech. Just what I've learned online and those times I tried to mod/hack Minecraft in high-school lol

    i've just submitted my second project for the fewd techdegree. curious as to how you studied when you were going through the program. i noticed on the second project there was quite a bit of stuff i had to go back and review and check other sites to research to complete the project even though i had watched the treehouse videos twice through and took notes. lots of info didn't stick.

    • @self-taughtdev
      @self-taughtdev  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I mean it's just like learning anything else. Repetition's going to be a big thing. I had that problem with the projects until I started taking notes in a notebook and started to review them while I worked on the projects.
      Also going through freecodecamp, and the odin project (both free resources) at the same time helped a little too. Gets you more repetition and its good to get different perspectives on the topics.
      You're not gonna be expected to memorize literally everything though. I mean you'll always have google when you get a tech job (If that's what you're going for).

    Hi, What about the third option they have called Web Development? Is that a combination of these two? I'm not sure which one to pick.

    • @self-taughtdev
      @self-taughtdev  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I imagine it still contains a lot of courses from front end and full stack. I'd still probably start off with the front end one, do that, then do the full stack JS one, then the Web Dev one.
      Now a lot of the videos in the courses will overlap and the important part IS NOT the certificate they give you after completing it. I actually never got certificates from either of them. The important part IS THE PROJECTS. So once you go through the Front End Techdegree, and start the JS one, maybe 40-50% of the videos required for the course are the same. The ones that are the same, put on 2x speed and skim through again because you'll have forgotten some of it, then build the project, and keep going. They limit you to one project submission every week/2 weeks/month, but again the project submission portion's only important if you want to get the cert (Which you don't, you want the projects). The projects are the proof you show potential employeers that says "I know what i'm doing. You can hire me".
      Hope that makes since. It's in text so I skipped a lot of my thoughts lol

      @@self-taughtdev Thanks. I appreciate your advice. I went through the units they have listed, and I found 3 units/projects in the Front End course that aren't in the Web Dev course: Web dashboard, Searchable photo gallery, and web style guide. All the JS units are the same. I think I will start with the Front End. Thanks again!

    All your videos make me feel better about becoming a self taught dev! I’m currently working through Fullstack JavaScript techdegree - I’m on project 4 which is the OOP game. • @self-taughtdev
      @self-taughtdev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I did! I'd get stuck on projects a lot and when I did I'd switch to the odin project or freecode camp and start working through those. I'd eventually find something that would make it click and I could keep moving forward on TTH projects. Also make sure you use their forms and slack channel (If they've still got that).

    What do you think about Udacity Front End or Full Stack??

  • @DDoesT
    @DDoesT 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have been coding for a good 4 months now.
    - During these 4 months I have been taking a web design class which covered basic css and html (the prof said I was ahead of others and provided me material to learn js as well).
    - I finished a js course on Udemy and complete the projects offered with it.
    - Got the first certification that they offer on freecodecamp ( i believe it's on responsive design).
    So my question is this.
    I've been preparing myself to go to a coding boot camp (coding dojo in LA) where they offer internships at the end of the course. Do you think I would still be able to get a job without having to go to the boot camp? I'm unsure how I will stack up to other developers who went to one.
    If not, would going through TTH still be beneficial to me to get a job?

May do the fullstack to since it seems like a good idea. I currently do Instacart + Doordash for work so with a completely open schedule I'm realizing now is the time in my life to get this done. Hey, first off fantastic video, thanks for all the info. My question was I completed an entire html and css course with Jonas on Udemy but have only built 2 projects outside the course with a lot of help of looking through the course code. Would you still consider me to start with Front-end as I wasn't that confident then move to full-stack? Also you said in the last minute that you can start applying after the third project? Was that front end or full stack? Thank you for your time and appreciate all the help!!

    I’m curious if you would recommend the web dev team treehouse techdegree over the front end? I’m interested in front end but I see the web dev techdegree has way more languages you can learn like React included.

    • @self-taughtdev
      @self-taughtdev  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you can afford it I'd to both. Start with Front End because you'll get a solid foundation with HTML, CSS, and vanilla JS. Then Web Dev because it'll dive a lot deeper into JS and some of the libraries/frameworks with it

    thanks man, just a question with this, I'm debating on starting this in late October/early November. Ultimately, I want to do full stack work, I'm a data scientist by trade, so I'm pretty familiar with python syntax wise for backed stuff. I don't want to necessarily leave the DS world unless something more lucrative came up, I'm mainly looking at this for freelance work I can do on the side, or if something happened, I would have an additional skill set I could have to look for jobs. I plan on taking your advice and starting on front end, then moving to full stack, my question is just that, is the billing kind of like a 200 a month flat, and you have access to all of it? For the tech degree's. Or do you have to pay additional fees or something along those lines? Cheers.
