Replacing The Cylinder Head Temperature Sensor On A 2010 Ford Focus

- Just fixed my wife's car. Went out the other day, the temperature gauge and temp light on the dash went crazy then the check engine light came on. Car ran crummy the rest of the way home. Luckily it was a fairly cheap fix that I could figure out how to fix myself.
This is the code reader I use amzn.to/3vzi8UL it works but is an older model that may not be fully functional with newer vehicles. It is an affiliate link.
It's 2025 and your video was still very useful for diagnosing and fixing my 2010's problem. Thank you! Too bad I hadn't seen it before I changed the hard to get to thermostat/housing...lol
Glad it helped. I had never seen a dry system like this before. Thanks for watching.
I have to admire your willingness to tackle something like this. I also have accumulated many older Craftsman tools even some my parents gave me when I was 16. Just an FYI if you ever have the need there is a TH-cam channel from Avoca, NY by Eric O, called South Main Auto Repair. He is an amazing mechanic that gets jobs from other shops that have given up or just thrown parts at a problem. His diagnostic skills are epic and he has many videos on TH-cam. Thanks for the video and sharing your solution.
Thanks. Usually finding a code can help narrow things down. Probably saved $200.00 over what the dealer would charge so its worth a try. I have many craftsman tools and the older ones are really good. I will check him out. Thanks for watching.
You're a lifesaver, my car has been having these same issues and instead of spending a ton at a mechanic I'm gonna go tomorrow to Lowe's and get the tools to do it myself. Thank you so so much.
Hope this solves your problem. It seems to be happening to many of them as they get older. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 you did my man, I'm back on the road with absolutely zero problems thanks to you.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 Thanks for this very informative video as it matches my exact same issue. Got the Ford replacement but have yet to find a deep enough socket. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
Omg it's been driving me crazy finding a deep socket. @@danforthcommunitygroup369
@@josh19873 If you or anyone you know can weld you can cut the top off the socket and weld another cheap socket or tube(etc.) to the top of it. And a handle if need be
Great video. As a ford tech i see this broke CONSTANTLY. We have a few of these cars from the sheriff’s office, i call them cutesy, used for citizen observer patrol. Had 2 come in for an AC concern, neither of which i could verify, ac was ice cold. So i move on to doing a timing cover reseal/ valve cover gasket, and see the coolant light pop up for a split second while pulling it into my lift. So i get out and pop the grommet off, and what do you know, the locking tab was broke! And when that sensor is unplugged the AC shuts off too, thinking the car is overheating.. so i tell my apprentice to pull in the other, that we couldnt verify last week.. pop the grommet off that one and what do you know.. easy repair, these locking tabs constantly break being in that location; especially when oil leaks from the valve covers into that valley, theyll break on you every time. Good work 👍🏻
This sure seems to be a common issue with them from the comments. Luckily it's an easy fix. Thanks for watching.
Ed can fix everything, a man of many talents and quite humble too.
Always varied content here. 👍
Thanks. It's worth trying for something like this just to avoid sitting in a dealers waiting room for hours, worst you can do is fail and go there anyway. Thanks for watching.
Just want to say thank you for posting this video I just had the same exact problem with my car and your video helped my boyfriend and I figure out what was wrong with my car. Again thank you for sharing your video
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
You're so patient and intelligent, I'll follow ❤
Thanks, I hope this helps you. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the video. Had similar issue in my 11 Focus- radiator fan would kick on and drop the temp gauge. Later followed by the p1289 code. 15 minute fix!
Glad it was helpful. A fairly fairly cheap, easy fix if you can do it yourself. Thanks for watching.
¿Se corrigió tu problema cambiando el sensor?
You can build or repair so many things. That has to be fun.
This was an easy fix that saved about $200.00. Thanks for watching.
what a lovely video u are the best one to describe and to relate too everything is there no questions on my side I wish to see more of it ty!!
It seems to be a common failure on this model. Thanks for watching.
just a little free tech tip when changing these out remove the number 2 and 3 cop coil on the pack for better access I have big hands otherwise its a tight fit and when trying to fit your fingers in there you dont have room and things can break. or you can just remove the number 2 cop to make more room
Hopefully it never has to be done again. Not to bad with the right socket. Thanks for watching.
This is exactly what I need. My 2009 Ford Focus is doing the same thing.
It's a fairly low cost fix. Good luck. Thanks for watching.
No check engine light or codes on my daughter's 5 speed manual trans Focus. Just revved to 4000 rpms at a stop. Temp gauge in instrument cluster read "cold" and rad fan only ran with AC on. Replace Temperature as described here. All is well now. thanks!
Glad it worked for you. Seems to be a common issue with them. Thanks for watching.
Thank you so much! I have the same problem with my 2010 Focus SES; same symptoms and same code. I just didn't know what tool to use. Like you, my 19 mm socket has a rubber insert in it for grabbing spark plugs, so I'll go shopping for a 19 mm deep socket.
-Bob
It's a tough socket to locate. Thanks for watching.
Where did you find a deep enough 19mm socket?
You are a man of many talents. I enjoyed the video.
Thanks. It was a 5 minute job that saved around $200.00 if we took it to the dealer. Thanks for watching.
Thank you ! Thank you ! Thank you ! I thought that I also had a water temp. sensor, but I don't. Thanks for the heads up ! After I removed the rubber boot, I found my sensor and plugs swimming in oil, from a leaky valve cover gasket. I use permatex permashield on that type of gasket to prevent that from happening again. a little expensive but it doesn't fail ! !
They aren't built like the used to be. I was surprised by this setup. I love that permatex for problem areas like that. Thanks for watching.
Good Job!! Yup I try to fix everything I have from refrigerators to cars!! LOL thank goodness for youtube!! Have a great weekend!!
It's definitely worth a try with the cost of repairs these days. Thanks for watching.
I have the same problem with the same car!...this helped perfectly
Glad this video helped you out, it's a common problem with that model. Thanks for watching.
At last a repair that was quick and east thank you
One of the few things on that engine that's easy to get at. Thanks for watching.
Super helpful! I have the same car with the same problem.
Should be an easy fix then. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the info just bought one doing the same thing gonna slap one in this weekend
No problem 👍. Seems to be a common issue that is easy to fix. Thanks for watching.
Thank you for doing this video.. very helpful !!!!
It seems to be a common problem with them and luckily is fairly easy to fix. Thanks for watching.
Good little car
It has been pretty good. Brakes have been the biggest problem with it so far. Thanks for watching.
great job! thank you!
Hopefully it helps you. Thanks for watching.
Was very helpful but i need to replace the rubber boot. Where can i get one and how do i change it
You probably will have to get that from Ford. Check with your local dealer. Thanks for watching.
Great video 👍 nice fix
Thanks 👍 Glad it was an easy fix. Thanks for watching.
My head temp sensor is good, but the clip on the rubber boot has been damaged. Is there a specific verbiage for that?
probably going to have to go to Ford or a junkyard for that. A company like rock auto may have parts diagrams with part numbers. Thanks for watching.
There’s a little yellow gasket that fell out of my connector to the sensor. No big deal? I clicked it in anyway and it seems to work. I lost the gasket
I wonder if a little silicone areond the connection would keep moisture out? Thanks for watching.
Funny thing is, I’ve looked at the replacement part for the connector and sensor and I don’t see the little gasket. Strange.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 I just replaced the valve cover and I’m missing a bolt. I can’t find replacement bolts anyway for a 2010 Ford Focus SE. Any ideas?
I sure hope you didn't drop it in the engine wwhen the cover was off. Your local ford dealer should be able to get them or tell you the thread and lenght thatyou could probably find on Amazon.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 thanks I’ll try that. It’s possible when I was getting the cover off one fell but I thought the bolts are supposed to stay connected to the cover sense they don’t come all the way out when I was loosening them. Some came out most didn’t. Nonetheless, the most likely scenario is that the bolt fell down into the oil pan, one can hope.
I have a 2009 ford focus. The cover to the ect sensor also has a hole in it. Where do I find another one?
Try the Ford site with your vin number to find a part number then do a web search. Thanks for watching.
Coo. Thanx.
I did this in a 2002 Ford and it never tightens....it threads down and keeps spinning? Seems to never tighten ..just spins once the threads bottom out
That means the threads are stripped. It's only an aluminum head and doesn't take much torque to damage threads. Wonder if a helicoil would work? Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 so do you think it is going to affect the purpose of the sensor....?
If it is not sealed and water gets in it could. I wouldn't leave my car like that but if your getting rid of it soon another story.
I've changed my brakes roaders caliber and master cylinder and it still not working could it be a cylinder head sensor they won't bleed
One has nothing to do with the other. You probably tripped the equalizer valve. Thanks for watching.
Hey I need that lil boot that goes over the temp sensor... mine has cracked and will not stay on... do u know a part #... ford dealership was no help
I would check at a NAPPA or other local auto parts store. Thanks for watching.
@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 I've looked everywhere... just gonna have to go to the Ford dealer face to face... thx
My clip is somehow broke allowing oil onto the sensor since it won’t click down in any ideas how to fix the clip
You sure its not a cracked head? There shouldn't be oil in there. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 it don’t leak no oil and the oils oil and coolants Cooland
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 the sensor is right under inside the valve cover shouldn’t there be oil in there
The sensor hole is threaded in the water jacket .
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 it ended up being valve cover gasket thanks for the reply’s and time bro much love 🤍🤙
I have this code as well. Did the sensor being out cause issues with starting the car? My car struggles to turn on sometimes.
Nothing to do with starting, fixed the temp gauge code. Have your battery checked at one of the auto parts stores. Thanks for watching.
i need to replace the rubber seal that covers the other connector, the air pressure keeps blowing it off because its got a tear down the bottom? any suggestions
I have no idea and don't have the focus anymore to look at. Thanks for watching.
Wife wifes car had a check engine light and some codes a couple of weeks ago. I will tell you what, I am NOT a fan of working on this new stuff. I must have stared at it scratching my head for half the day. I even told her "Lets park it and get you a new car" I ended up getting an Innova Fixassist 3100RS, I am not sure it helped me fix the car but it sure is a fancy piece of equipment. I am eger to learn more about how to use it.
That's funny. My wife said let's just get a new one also. She actually called the local Chevy dealer and asked if they would take a broken car as a trade in. Without some way to read the codes you can spend a fortune replacing parts. Luckily it was a cheap sensor. This one will be going down the road as soon as there is a decent affordable electric car now that gas is heading to $6.00 a gallon again. Been looking for a electric conversion kit for my old Biscayne also. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 OUCH!!!! We are just flirting with $4 per gallon out west. It's an easy $100 fill up for my full size truck.
My power steering is leaking on my focus even after replacing all the components. Can I add Permatex gasket sealant to the power steering reservoir to temporarily stop the leak? I heard of people mixing it with oil to fix oil leaks so was wondering if same could be done with power steering.
Take it to a professional and have it fixed right. You probably could destroy the rack doing that .
SUPER NICE FIX 🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦🇨🇦
Luckily it was an easy one. Thanks for watching.
There was oil in my temp sensor hole. Do you know what could've caused that or if it's urgent?
Shouldn't be, you may have other problems. I have no idea if its urgent or not. Good luck. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 okay thank you! Also very helpful video, great step by step process.
I cant find a socket to get out out none of them are hollow all the enough 😕
Some auto parts stores will loan you the tools if you buy the part from them. Call your local parts stores. Thanks for watching.
Good for you. I don't even dare work on cars anymore.
I got lucky that it was just a sensor. Anything harder would go to the dealer. Used to be easy to find the parts but I would still be looking if it wasn't for the web. Thanks for watching.
Thank you sooo much ❤❤
It seems to be a fairly common problem. Thanks for watching.
when you pull the sensor is it suppose to be dry in there? we have oil in ours. thank you
Mine was dry. Don't see how oil could get in there with the sealer on the threads. Thanks for watching.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 there is oil in there so there must be an oil leak now too =( thank you have to figure that out and how to fix that
@@drewspangler9434 replace the valve cover gasket
hi Drew if you have oil in yours you probably have a valve cover gasket leaking oil hope this helps
thank you so much sir
Thanks for watching.
Thank you se fot this video you sabes me lots of time AND money
Glad to help. Thanks for watching.
very useful. saved me tons of $$!
If you have the same problem it's fairly easy to fix. Thanks for watching.
Wow!!! this is new for you!! And you want to put an LS Motor in your old Chev. Sorry your an amazing guy but I'm old school when it comes to cars!! Don't take this the wrong way but I'm just not a computer guy when it comes to cars!!! Old school at 69!! Thanks for ALL your amazing video's!!!
Actually now I am thinking about electric for the old Biscayne. Just read anything with an internal combustion engine will be confiscated and ground into tiny peices before 2035 😟. It's getting scary out there. Thanks for watching.
I couldn't find a socket deep enough after visiting 6 stores... Can anyone refer me to a socket deep enough for this?
You could try an auto parts store as they usually have specialized tools they lend out if you buy the part from them. Thanks for watching
Very useful
It's a fairly simple fix. Thanks for watching.
What if oil fills the hole up
You could have big problems. Should be dry inthe hole. Thanks for watching.
You need to replace the valve cover gasket
What size socket!!!!!!
I think it was 19mm or 3/4. Thanks for watching.
Where tf can I find this socket though?
Maybe look in Home depot or Harbor freight. Second hand shops sometimes have odd sockets also. Thanks for watching.
hi... does the rubber boot that covers the valve cover pop out on yours or stays on?...mine pops or slide out causing the engine to make slapping or unusual sound.,,,and is yours rubber cover stay dry?..mine has some oil...but regardless, the cover will come off due to pressure build up
Stays in fine. Should be no pressure. You may have a more serious problem if there's any pressure in there. Thanks for watching.
Mike, mine is doing the same thing. Did you figure out what was wrong??
@@rushglz017 probably(hopefully) just need a new valve cover gasket. Not the easiest job like this sensor but a determined and cautious DIY person can do it in a few hours I believe.
@@AltruisticWarrior i have a 2009 ses and the valve cover gasket needed to be done along with the temp sensor, and there was a mix of oil and water in the hole. i got that done and the radiator went the next week, lmao. sensor just went out a year later and it looks like ive gotta get this done again. ill try some silicone this time since im guessing that water fouled it.
Happen to have that particular NGK part #?
This is the one I bought amzn.to/34nrWJo check the ngk site to be sure it fits yours.
@@unemployedredneckhillbilly2023 thanks for the reply! Unfortunately they’re out of stock on Amazon but I did find it in the NGK/ntk web site- thanks again!
Is this a 1.6 liter
2 liter. Thanks for watching.
Do you have the dual clutch auto transmission in that thing?
I have no idea. Thanks for watching.
No dual clutch in that one. I think they started using those in 2012. They were still using the 4f27e on those. It’s a Mazda/Ford tranny.
just another vacuum or are blow your valve cover all that stuff in there will go down your spark plug wells if your removing your coil on packs
Thanks that's a good tip.
What size socket did it take?
3/4 or 19 mm. Thanks for watching.
What brand of socket, no deepwell socket I have fits
Same dude, the plug stops it for me @@timbishop3205

Last time when I replaced the battery it reset after less then 20 miles. 1 trip to town and back. Thanks for watching.
Took it out today and computer was ready for emission test at 11.8 miles.
oem Ford sensors are crap! bought 2 of these from Ford, they became faulty within 3 months.
When replacing any sensors on these Fords buy a good brand Ngk, Bosch, Febi bilstein.
This one has worked great so far and I bet it outlasts the OEM one. That Ford logo triples the price. Thanks for watching.
