Great video! Thank you for making this. Looks like I may as well replace the alternator and belt while I’m at it. Just a quick thought on the removal of the sensor. I’ve heard they can be a little tough to get loose. Any harm in cutting the wiring from the sensor to the harness, and then using a socket on a breaker bar to get the thing loose?
Thanks so much for the video. I was wondering if you could tell me what symptoms you were having with the car that led you to change this sensor. I have a 2001 Focus and my temp gauge goes to the right like it is completely overheating, but it is not. It will stay there for a little while, jump back to normal and repeat. I have changed the temp sensor on top of the cylinder head, flushed the entire system, changed the thermostat, etc.. but no luck. Were you having this issue as well?
My mondeo is the same changed coolant sensor but still hovers between normal and then rises to the right then slowly settles back to normal anybody know any thing to change next? Mike
ohhhhh thats for the head. .... Mine was the cooling temp sensor ontop of the themostat hosing ...... The fan would run on High continuosly, I unplug the sensor & the fan wornt run at all. did the parts store give me the wrong sensor?
When I replaced my alternator,it was a huge pain!!!! getting the old 1 out & new 1 in was a pain! finally I connected a chain to the motor & used a 2nd car to very easily put tention on chain to pull the motor forward a inch & when I put the new alternator in, the tabs were to thick to allow me to align the bolt holes so, After a day & night of messing with it, I ground down the tabs & it finally allowed me to bolt it in EASILY..pain in the xxx thow now, I could do one in under a hour easily.
Where is head temperature sensor? Ford Focus 2010 2nd generation North American SE. The problem arose when I had a leak in the heat radiator, I put some special matter into the coolant liquid, the leak disappeared. I wonder could this stuff make an effect on the sensor? Will it help if I purge the system?
My zetec has new head temp sensor, cooling fan solenoid, water pump, thermostat & housing, but, my cooling fans will not cycle! I changed the relays, checked the fuses & I disconnected the fans, ran power to them & they spin fine! Also, when I disconnect the head temp sensor they run constantly! I don't know if I need new fans or if there is an electrical problem? If I accidentally swapped the wires on the fan solenoid, could that make the fans not operate?; I am pretty sure I did the job right but, what if???
I have a 03 focus dohc zetec Vin 3 & disconnecting the head temp sensor will lead to a fried alternator! The way to avoid it is to disconnect the a/c fan & Don't run the a/c!!! But, by disconnecting the one fan, if u disconnect the head temp sensor, only running 1 fan is only 40 amp draw rather then 80 amp draw!!! Everyone says to disconnect the negative terminal.I disconnect the positive terminal to!!!! Because you will be touching & disconnecting the positive terminal on the alternator & it will touch the firewall & ground. There will be sparks! Disconnect both battery terminals when changing a alternator on a 1st gen zetec focus!
So disconnecting the sensor makes the fans turn on, I did it and it worked.. problem is, the resistor started glowing red and burned. The resistor was brand new also... was it suppose to do that??
lucky you guys with Ztec engine! Duratec engine ,for the second generation foci, has the Cylinder head temperature sensor between cylinders 2&3. needs either a special tool, extra deep deep deep deep 19mm socket-good luck finding one, or , you would have to go through the nightmare or removing the valve cover. I love my focus and I baby it and all, but, lets face it. the engine was designed by a mentally incapacitated mechanical engineer.
Hello there. My 02 1.6 zetec focus fans run from cold ! Temp gauge fine as is the heater ! Does this denote the temp sensor between 2 & 3 cyl ? Thankyou. Dave
My situation is the following: when temperature rises to 90 degrees, the instrumental panel shows malfunction, then the arrow falls back to zero degrees and fan (ventilator) starts working hard. When I connect computer, it gives error p0189 - coolant temperature sensor malfunction. The worst thing is I can't find the sensor to replace it - where can it be???
My daughter has an 01 with the zetec. Damn thing is a knuckle buster. Been overheating for a while now. Changed out radiator because it was cracked, changed resistors because fans wouldn't come on, that didn't work so now here we go. Definitely a good video
I have a 2000 ford Focus with DOHC Zetec and is overheating and fans will only run with a/c on. I did unplug the connector for the temp sensor and fans did run. But my question is I am getting a correct temperature reading on my gauge on the dash and does go to the hot side so does this means my temperature sensor is ok and I need to find a different issue? Or will my engine still read hot and not start the fans if the temperature sensor is bad? Thanks
This was helpful: my mechanic bypassed the defective sensor (trying to save me money) and put wires directly to fans: it works for awhile but blows out fuses; best thing to do is get at the sensor as shown here !
lucky me i get to do this tonight...changed the alternator and remember how much of a hassle it was to do so...hoping this sensor isnt as tough since i dont have to completely remove the alternator (as i remember that was the majority of the hassle outside of having the right tools hahaha) hoping i can do this pretty quick....
Hello, my 2002 Ford Focus gave me a code of cylinder head temperature sensor. But the symptoms of it is... Car has more gas then should.turns of at any moment, when I brake it still has so much force that I have to hold the brake with so much force. If I change it will all the problems go away or is there more to fix. When I erase the code it works fine. But when it starts to act up it does the same thing. my mechanic hasn't had time to fix it. I wish I could change it myself.
when the iac sensor(idle air sensor) needs cleaned,it will cause a focus to stall a lot al a idle,as far as to much gas, maybe the car is idling to high, since its fuel injected, there shouldn't be an adjustment screw but on most all cars, there is a screw that allows nu to turn up the idle whitch can cause a lot of problems.iv seen episodes where the idle screw was turned up instead of fixing the real problem,so if a car is running rough & stalling because of many reasons, some people do the wrong thing & adjust the idle screw.im just wondering if that's whats going on with yours? a lot of focus's don't have a rpm guage but if your doent have 1,u can access a rpm guage threw the little screen that displays your mileage by holding down the reset button for your tripodometer while starting the car then use that same button to select threw the different selections until u get to a rpm guage but,BE WARNED!!!! IF NOT DONE CORRECTLY,IT CAN HURT YOUR CAR YOU CAN LOOK IT UP ON YOU TUBE-(ACCESS SECRET DISPLAY ON FORD FOCUS)....THEN SEE WHAT YOUR CAR IDLES AT? DEPENDING ON TEMPATURE & HOW LONG THE CAR HAS BEEN RUNNING,MINE RUNS AT ABOUT 850 RPM'S AFTER ITS WARMED UP.IT FLUCTUATES BETWEEN SAY 695-850 SOMETIMES,BUT WHEN COLD_950-1,000 I HAVE A 03 FOCUS 2.0 ZETEC & CAN ACCESS THE SECRET DISPLAY ON MINE. HOPE I WAS HELPFULL???
WHEN HE SAYS ITS A GOOD TIME TO REPLACE THE ALTERNATOR< IT WOULD BE A GREAT TIME TO UPGRADE TO A HI-AMP ALTERNATOR IF YOU PLAN ON INSTALLING A STERIO & ANY AMPLIFIERS. MINE WENT OUT SOON AFTER PURCHACING THE CAR SO I WAS IN A HURRY TO GET IT RUNNING AGAIN,DIDNT THINK ABOUT NEEDING MORE AMPERAGE AT THAT TIME...SO, NOW I STILL NEED A HI-AMPERAGE ALTERNATOR-SOON-PLUS A 10 FARROD CAP & 2ND BATTERY TO POWER MY CAB 1600.1 AMP=4800 WATTS!!! ITL SLAM!!!!! SHAKE THE WHOLE NEIGHBORHOOD!!!
Well done how-to video!
Explanations / instructions were concise and easy to understand.
Thanks for the time & effort to share!!!!!
such a big help, watching this video i feel like i can change my car's temperature sensor my self.
also I will replace the serpentine belt.
You saved me sooooo much time and money bro thank you
My alternator went bad so I might as well replace the sensor. Thanks for the video.

Have you changed the water pump & made sure there is no air in your coolant system?
did u ever find the solution mine is doing the same

Did you have to drain the coolant to remove the sensor?
nope its not a coolant sensor
No

Also a aftermarket sensor makes the fans dont turn on, remember that. These Fords really needs the original sensors to work properly.
thankyou so much it was a big help for me solve ford problen.God bless you.

Did you ever identify the issue? I am in the same situation
Thanks bro, thumbs up
Ford focus 2 2010 North American where is the coolant sensor?
thank u im glad i was able to help
What are the symtoms and diagnosis that led you to your conclusion that the cylinder head temperature sensor was at fault ? thanks
Is there a check engine light code for bad cylinder head temperature sensor ?
Andy Lee code : P1299
@freestyleflowful what size ratchet did you use to remove the CHT sensor?

Thnx .. Good job 👍
My Fan wont work when the sensor is plugged in. Unplug it & the fan runs fast.
