Potion Lily What I found really helpful is taking one page dedicated completely to hands. Often times, I'll take a picture or something of my own, and I've became much better with hands - also if you study images and hand placement, it's pretty awesome to do before taking on a full image.
This was the first video tutorial that I followed along with, and made my first really good manga drawing. It gave me the confidence to seriously pursue my artwork and become the artist I am today. I can't tell you how thankful I am, Mark. I could never have done it without you.
Mark, I know I'm several years late to this video, but I'm just now learning to draw. I've watched several of your videos so far, and want to thank you for making them. You're a super teacher.
wow i used to watch ur videos so much as a kid when i was drawing anime and i'm about to cry i found ur channel i remember this exact video i watched i'm feeling so nostalgic
Just found your channel, maybe because I just recently decided to pick up drawing and take my time to become good at it. Noticed how you have a bunch of these videos and that really feels good to see! Wanted to say thanks for all of your work & I'll be one of the many out there that appreciate your help & guides. Subbed & excited about this channel! :)
I'd like to see an in-depth video on the middle one. Specifically, what you like about it and what to borrow/exaggerate/tone down from the other styles to create the effect an artist might want for their series.
Me at first: Okay Me after first drawing:Oh cool nice man Me after second: Reeeal Sexy ;) Me after third: KILL IT WITH FIRE! Me at the end: They probably dont look too much dif-OH MY GOD
Wow you are good. Like really good. Toooo good! Also, thanks because these videos are really helpful!! I like the middle "Naruto" one the most, it reminds me of Loish's style (who is my ultimate fav!). So if he did a video going over that style more, someone *please* help me find it. The big eye one reminds me of Fuzichoco, and when I go look at the art style now, I can really see how low some of the ears get on Choco's. Its like I cant stop noticing it now lol.
Second style is by far my favourite. For me, it just feels more...comfortable? Familiar, almost. And friendly. I think I'd have much more fun with it than the other styles.
markcrilley I did too, but the in the first book, the method you used where you divide the circle into four and then 3 more lines under it is not working for me. I can't get a decent circle to start with, and I can get the Jaw shape. Also the eyes. Any tips or anything I might be doing wrong??
That's normal, and in fact a healthy attitude to have so long as you're not being too hard on yourself. Being able to see the flaws in your own drawings means you will be able to improve upon those next time you draw as long as you keep them in mind. It also stops you from becoming complacent with your style and stagnating. I know it sounds cliché but use that desire to keep improving your art! You'll also become quicker as you keep drawing.
***** No need to say my decision is idiotic but I get what you are saying. I wasn't actually quitting I was considering but I still kept trying. I did stop at one point but kept on going even though I wasted 5 sketch pads in short time, which made me become very impatient with building my artistic skill so i posted that earlier comment.
I know im late and all but if you are still considering on giving up maybe you shouldn't draw this type of art maybe you are meant to draw ina active objects until you improve then start drawing animals or manga.
Probably late af but if you are still having trouble instead of "waisting the sketch pads" only draw insanely lightly till you improve that way you can continue to use the same piece of paper over and over by earsing then once you got a good looking drawing and can make good looking ones you start practicing to make it darker and actually shade it
I wonder if you went to a school were they taught you to draw. I mean, you already have great talent in that area, but it's so perfect... It'd be hard to believe someone didn't help you with it.
Thanks mark so much!, Been practicing alot lately, gone from crying to actually accepting how good ive gotten after comparing our drawings the past few weeks! :)
I do that all the time.. But it really has helped me strive to get better at drawing! I was always like "Gah this didn't turn out right." And someone would come up to my room and be like "Woah!! Did you draw that?!"
That's one of the side effects of being an artist. The more you know about drawings and art, the more capable you are of seeing the little details. I'm just starting to learn how to draw, but when I play my piano in front of other people they think I hit every single note at the exact right time, when in reality I can hear all of the mistakes I make. You make mistakes from time to time but the unprossesional wont notice asnd the professional wont care, because they know how hard you're working.
I think I am going to cry...... Its beautiful! I came here because I am just so frustrated... About three days ago I out did myself with a drawing I was so surprised like: How the hell did I do that? It came out perfectly! And now I cant even draw a shape of the face.. Does it happen to someone else? I just feel like soaked all out.. Nothing left
You're videos are so helpful! You are a such a great artist Mark and I'm very happy I found your channel. I used to draw all the time when I was younger but then life got in the way. Now 10 years later I'm trying to get back into it and it can be very frustrating at times, not being at the level I used to be at or the level I would be at now if I never stopped, but you and a couple other artists here on TH-cam have made the process much simpler and I find the process much more relaxing rather than stressful now. Which is where I want to be, finding joy in art like I used to in the past. Also, I just ordered your how to draw manga vol 1 on Amazon for my little sister. She doesn't always have Internet to watch the videos like I do, so it'll will be very good for her to have the book. So I just wanted to say thank you for the tutorials! ^_^
Hey mark I was wondering if it's ok for you to show us the measurements with the jaw to the chin, I always find that part extremely difficult thank you! Your my number 1 favourite artist I love your work
I love watching your videos after attempting your step-by-steps in your books, it helps put it into perspective like it would if you were taking an online class. While you were drawing the second face I was thinking how much it looked like Sakura Haruno from when I was using her as my practice model when I first started dabbling with drawing the manga style, so it was entertaining when you used the series as a reference for the style.
Mark, thanks so much for all the work you've put into all these videos. I've watched most of them, but this is my first comment. Sorry about that. It really helps me personally and I really appreciate it. Thanks again. Really love the flow of your videos.
Yes, this was a useful one. Easy to do ,probably because of the frontal position of the faces. Satisfactory result. Interesting to see the differences in styles between the three. Thanks for another good tutorial, Mark Crilley!
markcrilley Hey Mark , my grandma just passed away and my mom says since IM the artist in the family I have to draw and laminate a drawing. Will u make a video of some ideas? Thanks Mark. sorry to be a burden~
Hey Man, You are huge inspiration. I always had an idea about manga that I want to draw but I never had a chance get a proper lessons how to draw. Your videos are more than enough. Thanks Mike !
Hey Mark, I'm someone who has drawn my whole life and all styles and everything, bla bla bla... I just wanted to say thank you! for all of your videos you've made for us, but also for doing such a great job explaining things and drawing so we understand! Thanks!! I have made a decision to contribute and order some of your work!! KEEP TUTORIALING!! :)
Thank you soo much for posting this video and all of your other how-to videos! It has really helped me improve my manga drawings! I have a lot more confidence now in what I draw XD
So, I was looking for a video of yours but on the eyes, and I ended up settling for this. I have been also currently changing my huge, giant anime eyes to a more humane style. The way you did the eyes really helped as a guideline, so thanks for that.
I just came across your channel...loved the drawings...That was so cool when you pulled the shoot out at the end to see all 3 of the faces together...wow, what a difference the spacing makes...I would like to see the basic start of each style side by side and more explanation of the spacing of the lines...Yes, I'm a newby at all of this...thanks for the great video...I so enjoyed it...
This really improved my drawings! Thank you so much for sharing this with us! Someday, I wish I could be just like you and have my own graphic novels! Congrats on your books! Keep writing and drawing because you are awesome!
OMG YOU'RE THE MANGAKA OF MIKI FALLS? OHMYGOD I LOVED THAT SERIES. . .I just happened to stumble upon your drawings, because I wanted to be able to draw decently. ..never thought it'd be a mangaka I admired the works of. -shall now be stalking more and more of his videos-
This was so helpful.. I've been a manga fan since I was a little kid and I've always wanted to know how to draw it. I have friends who are masters at it and I'm ok but drawing faces has never been my forte. Thanks a bunch. I'm going to look into your book.
i love the last one! I don't really read manga but i read miki falls and it was great!!! I loved it!!! I'm going to start brody's ghost soon because it looks really interesting!!! I also bought your mastering manga book because it looked really awesome when i saw it at barnes n nobles
I'm sort of new to well... art, so your guides here are sort of my lifeline for whenever I start to get frustrated (like when it take 6 tries to draw a specific little squiggle) so I wanted to let you know I appreciate take the time to create these guides. Another thing is that in a few of your videos is you make a point of saying "I don't mean this to be taken as the way it should be done always." (I'm paraphrasing) but I felt I should say I appreciate the respect for other styles and artists.
Awesome videos!! I have never been very good at drawing but have also always wanted to draw anime... truthfully your videos have been some of the only ones that have helped me, thank you very much
If it helps, I've found that drawing a good circle is mostly done from the shoulder. You hold your pencil as you normally would, but you really don't need much or any movement in the hand or fingers. Instead, you move your arm from your shoulder, keeping your elbow loose so that your forearm can extend ad retract naturally as your shoulder moves.
these videos are way better than the enormous and expensive manga books in my country, you really show how to do it , those hideous books of my country are just the step by step of how they do it with no explanation, i like your videos
thank you for everything, you've inspired me to make my own manga, your mastering manga book really helps Im trying too get the second book,so thanks Mr.Crilley
Making guidelines is good, I used them a lot when I started drawing (though I hated to draw them!). Now, after years I've learn to use them less and use more my eyes. It takes time but is really good way to learn and if you're not sure where to but your nose or mouth... just add guide lines. It saves your time and nerves.
lol anybody else notice how the eyes sorta dictate the age and that the figures look like the same girl at different stages in her life its pretty cool thanks mark i always learn something new anytime i watch one of your videos
I like the 3rd manga face style, not only because of the Naruto reference, but also for the way it looks...Also I'm liking your tutorials, it's helping me get better at manga and helping me getting closer to my dreams of becoming a manga artist
Hey! I really have taken a fond liking to all of your HTD videos! However, I would really appreciate if you made a video on what you use to draw your manga. What tools, what pencils, pens, erasers, etc. That would be really awesome! Thank you for taking the time to do all of this! ^.^
Hey Markcrilley, do you think you could possibly do a video on hand technique? Such as using different hand positions when drawing certain features of the manga character? (Eyes, nose, etc.)
thank you so much marcrilley for your tutorials I subscribe to you since I'm 8 and I start watching your how to draw videos they inspired me to draw too..now I'm good at drawing because of you :'D
Love these vids mate! Such good tutorials and you are one of the few people on TH-cam that describes/teaches so well! I have a couple of questions! Did you make a video concentrating on one (your favourite face out of the 3)? =) also was wondering if your books are available anywhere in Aus? =) thanks again!
Quite interesting to see different style my style is consites of a mixture of exagerated body parts yet i use anatomy. In other words realistic in a sense but still cartoon wise. great vid! love ur tutorials.
Oh no mark you forgot the most important thing!
the "blushies"!
*Draws a decent nose*
Holy shit what the hell did I just do?
***** I'm really good with the eyes and pretty okay with hair, but noses? NAAAAAAAAAAH
***** I'm horrible with hands, but isn't everybody? Lol, I'm actually pretty good with wrinkles in clothes, but I'm... not okay with shoes
***** What I have trouble most with is the legnth in comparison between each finger
Potion Lily What I found really helpful is taking one page dedicated completely to hands. Often times, I'll take a picture or something of my own, and I've became much better with hands - also if you study images and hand placement, it's pretty awesome to do before taking on a full image.
Jessica Smiles Thank you for the advice!
This was the first video tutorial that I followed along with, and made my first really good manga drawing. It gave me the confidence to seriously pursue my artwork and become the artist I am today.
I can't tell you how thankful I am, Mark. I could never have done it without you.
My favorite is the second ^^ really pretty :3
I prefer the final one, it's awesome in the sense it's unrealistic ^_^
true tho :'D
I honestly love all of them :D
Mark, I know I'm several years late to this video, but I'm just now learning to draw. I've watched several of your videos so far, and want to thank you for making them. You're a super teacher.
wow i used to watch ur videos so much as a kid when i was drawing anime and i'm about to cry i found ur channel i remember this exact video i watched i'm feeling so nostalgic

Rew Donaghy Thanks!
Wow you are good. Like really good. Toooo good! Also, thanks because these videos are really helpful!! I like this video! I have just learned more than in school!
It is amazing!
IloveBlender Thanks :)
IloveBlender Yea honestly Mark has taught me more than my high school art class! x)

Man ur fast I can't keep up when u draw can explain how to do guide lines plz!
I bought your two manga books.
Jessica Paul Thank you Jessica! ^_^
You're welcome. I recently got Brody's Ghost as well. It's pretty good.
markcrilley I did too, but the in the first book, the method you used where you divide the circle into four and then 3 more lines under it is not working for me. I can't get a decent circle to start with, and I can get the Jaw shape. Also the eyes. Any tips or anything I might be doing wrong??
I love art...it takes you to another place. Nice!
Yeah. I've been trying to learn to draw, I have gotten to the point of cartoony type people but still have a long way to go.
That's normal, and in fact a healthy attitude to have so long as you're not being too hard on yourself. Being able to see the flaws in your own drawings means you will be able to improve upon those next time you draw as long as you keep them in mind. 1st circle: potato. *erase*
2nd circle: blob. *erase*
3rd circle: square. *erase*
4th circle: perfect circle. *erase* *finish erasing* ...wait.
ok i give up I'm not destined to draw i should have known
***** No need to say my decision is idiotic but I get what you are saying. I wasn't actually quitting I was considering but I still kept trying. Draw a few squares in word, color them in with miscellaneous colors, donate that to a museum. You'll be a world renowned artist in no time at all.
Probably late af but if you are still having trouble instead of "waisting the sketch pads" only draw insanely lightly till you improve that way you can continue to use the same piece of paper over and over by earsing then once you got a good looking drawing and can make good looking ones you start practicing to make it darker and actually shade it
whenever I forget some techniques I just come back and watch your video, still helpful as usual
I wonder if you went to a school were they taught you to draw. I mean, you already have great talent in that area, but it's so perfect... It'd be hard to believe someone didn't help you with it.
Wow. You are an EPIC drawer! You are my FAVORITE artist ever! Keep up the pawsome work. ^W^
Thanks mark so much!, Been practicing alot lately, gone from crying to actually accepting how good ive gotten after comparing our drawings the past few weeks! :)
That resolution comment was a time capsule 🤣
Man, looking back, this drawing changed my life. I can actually draw *almost* half decent now. :)
You have your own manga! That is awesome!!!
Helps a lot when you say " the eyes are one eye lenght away from one another". Now I will have it much easier, thank you!
You're very welcome :)
markcrilley Hey can you do a tutorial for the version you did in the middle at 9:48 ? Thanks!
In the first drawing ears are not aligned, it's amazing how easy is to make a mistake in drawing and how easy it gets unnoticed.
Forget about books and magazines, and other schools, you are the best thanks a lot for sharing your knowledge.
They look like they gradually get younger and younger through the drawings. They are still amazng though. I'm jealous.
I do that all the time.. But it really has helped me strive to get better at drawing! I was always like "Gah this didn't turn out right." And someone would come up to my room and be like "Woah!! Did you draw that?!"
Thanks to you I've became a magnificent artist in manga style. Thank you
THAT kind of cross eyed tip HELP ME SO MUCH.... something so simple as that improved my drawings. THANKS MARK
I must say... I just started watching you and you have taught me more about manga drawing that anyone has. Thank you!
That's one of the side effects of being an artist. The more you know about drawings and art, the more capable you are of seeing the little details. I'm just starting to learn how to draw, but when I play my piano in front of other people they think I hit every single note at the exact right time, when in reality I can hear all of the mistakes I make. It came out perfectly! And now I cant even draw a shape of the face.. Does it happen to someone else? I just feel like soaked all out.. Nothing left
Thank you so much for making this video! I just got back into drawing and I've been having trouble placing facial features.
You're videos are so helpful! You are a such a great artist Mark and I'm very happy I found your channel. I used to draw all the time when I was younger but then life got in the way. +Jess Golabek Thank you Jess!

Mark, thanks so much for all the work you've put into all these videos. I've watched most of them, but this is my first comment. Sorry about that. It really helps me personally and I really appreciate it. Thanks again. Really love the flow of your videos.
+Jarrod Kidder Thank you Jarrod!
I haven't seen this vid in years. This was the very first Mark Crilley Tutorial I ever watched, almost two years ago. :-D
Yes, this was a useful one. Easy to do ,probably because of the frontal position of the faces. Satisfactory result. Interesting to see the differences in styles between the three. Thanks for another good tutorial, Mark Crilley!
My pleasure :)
markcrilley Hey Mark , my grandma just passed away and my mom says since IM the artist in the family I have to draw and laminate a drawing. Will u make a video of some ideas? Thanks Mark. sorry to be a burden~
I've hair found your channel and your videos have been such a great help for me.
I really love the 2nd type of face that you drew. Thank you so much for the video, it's very helpful.
Hey Man, You are huge inspiration. I always had an idea about manga that I want to draw but I never had a chance get a proper lessons how to draw. Your videos are more than enough. Thanks Mike !
i prefer the middle one and would love more tutorials on that style xx
I just discovered you and I was like "Holy shit this guys an AMAZING artist" :3
Hey Mark, I'm someone who has drawn my whole life and all styles and everything, bla bla bla... I just wanted to say thank you! for all of your videos you've made for us, but also for doing such a great job explaining things and drawing so we understand! Thanks!! I have made a decision to contribute and order some of your work!! KEEP TUTORIALING!! :)
I LOVE YOUR VIDS MARK AND I LOVE WHEN YOU GUIDE LINES CAUSE IM STARTING MY DRAWING IT HELPS ALOT TY.
I just want to say thank you... Thanks to your videos, I can now finally draw on my own in different styles.
I like you for doing this for me, for everyone. my drawing looks so good! :D more manga!
Thank you, wonderful video love seeing the tree styles next to each other
I just came across your channel...loved the drawings...That was so cool when you pulled the shoot out at the end to see all 3 of the faces together...wow, what a difference the spacing makes...I would like to see the basic start of each style side by side and more explanation of the spacing of the lines...Yes, I'm a newby at all of this...thanks for the great video...I so enjoyed it...
-shall now be stalking more and more of his videos-
Wow thanks! ^_^
All of the drawing styles were beautiful- but I ultimately loved the second style the most. :)
This was so helpful.. I've been a manga fan since I was a little kid and I've always wanted to know how to draw it. I have friends who are masters at it and I'm ok but drawing faces has never been my forte. Thanks a bunch. I'm going to look into your book.
Thanks for the video! I get better every time I do one of these tutorials.
This was very helpful to me and I really like the faces you chose they are definitely going to be used by me a lot
i love the last one! I don't really read manga but i read miki falls and it was great!!! I loved it!!! I'm going to start brody's ghost soon because it looks really interesting!!! I also bought your mastering manga book because it looked really awesome when i saw it at barnes n nobles
i love the big eye manga that you did and thanks for the tips
I'm sort of new to well... art, so your guides here are sort of my lifeline for whenever I start to get frustrated (like when it take 6 tries to draw a specific little squiggle) so I wanted to let you know I appreciate take the time to create these guides. Another thing is that in a few of your videos is you make a point of saying "I don't mean this to be taken as the way it should be done always." (I'm paraphrasing) but I felt I should say I appreciate the respect for other styles and artists.
i like how when you ask questions during the video i find myself nodding lol :D
Awesome videos!! I have never been very good at drawing but have also always wanted to draw anime... truthfully your videos have been some of the only ones that have helped me, thank you very much
Learned a lot, i just started loving to draw so im really thankful for this. Please post more stuff about drawing , especially for beginners.
Nice series. The more realistic one reminds me of SNK's style for King of Fighters' character designs.
thank you for everything, you've inspired me to make my own manga, your mastering manga book really helps Im trying too get the second book,so thanks Mr.Crilley
My favorite is the second one. You are really talented. Thanks for sharig.
Thank you . you have sped up my drawing so much with this simple guide line.
Thanks a lot! I just found your channel and I find your videos really helpful. Earned yourself another subscriber ^^
+3mptied Thank you!
I want mastering manga so bad! U r my inspiration Mr. Crilley. Thank you!
Really enjoyed this one, you should do more like this maybe from different angles
Fabulous tutorial!!! Very helpful
lol anybody else notice how the eyes sorta dictate the age and that the figures look like the same girl at different stages in her life its pretty cool thanks mark i always learn something new anytime i watch one of your videos
I love this guy's videos they really help someone new to art! (I'm a physics major but want to be more right-brained)
The last one is by far the best. Well, at least it is in my opinion. You rock my socks off(:
Do you have a video on fantasy anime features, like wolf ears and tails?
These videos are awesome!!!! and your drawing look so good, one day I'm going to draw like that!
I like the 3rd manga face style, not only because of the Naruto reference, but also for the way it looks...Also I'm liking your tutorials, it's helping me get better at manga and helping me getting closer to my dreams of becoming a manga artist
you mean 2nd?
Hey! I really have taken a fond liking to all of your HTD videos! However, I would really appreciate if you made a video on what you use to draw your manga. What tools, what pencils, pens, erasers, etc. That would be really awesome! Thank you for taking the time to do all of this! ^.^
Thank u, Mark! You're such a talented and generous artist!!! :D Just awesome!
I did a mix between 2 and 3 and it looks fab!! Thanks Mark :)
Hey Markcrilley, do you think you could possibly do a video on hand technique? Such as using different hand positions when drawing certain features of the manga character? (Eyes, nose, etc.)
thank you so much marcrilley for your tutorials
I subscribe to you since I'm 8 and I start watching your how to draw videos they inspired me to draw too..now I'm good at drawing because of you :'D
Thanks a lot...my old art teacher showed me a video of you when I was in elementary good luck and keep evolving ;)
I loved all the videos in your channel.
Amazing drawing
Thank you! You really helped me to draw manga i started a week ago and it's really cool!
Quite interesting to see different style my style is consites of a mixture of exagerated body parts yet i use anatomy. In other words realistic in a sense but still cartoon wise.
great vid! love ur tutorials.
