Your manga books have helped me to become a way better artist! Just a few MINUTES ago, I was looking at drawing tutorials, and I saw your channel. Lets just say i was... SUPER HAPPY! Thank you so much for sharing your artistic ability and tips in books and TH-cam for everyone to improve and enjoy. Hopefully one day, I can do the same. Thanks again!!
I remember when I used to struggle to draw profiles. My friends who also drew cartoons (and actually were the ones who got me into drawing at all) drew very stylized manga, so I never seemed to understand how to draw in profile. I learned to draw profiles by looking at real people. As a result, my manga was much more realistic, but it's a little inconsistent, as I didn't have a real "process" to how I drew things. This is very helpful. Thanks!
Currently ordering Brody's Ghost Volume 1 via amazon. i normally don't buy manga, i borrow it or *looks around and whispers* "i read it online" but you are something special, you take time out your life to share your knowledge and it covers so many styles and perspectives etc. You deserve every penny you make from your art man. Thank you.
So I've been watching your channel for a while, and I gotta say, I really appreciate all these how-to videos you put up. Especially recently, the videos you posted were directly relevant to what I was trying to learn at the time - I needed to learn how to draw hands, and then I realized I didn't know how to draw in profile. Thank you very much for posting these!
The marvelous thing about you, Mr. Crilley, is that it doesn't matter how learned I believe I am in the way of drawing, I still learn something each time I watch one of your videos. From the time I was in elementary school I wanted to do something with manga, and lately, as I started to attempt making it into a full-time project, I found myself turning to your videos for what I expected to be a refresher course. I ended up scratching my head in just about every video. "Wow! You can do that?"
When I was a child, I used to draw a lot of characters in manga-style. But growing up I lost the habit and the little talent I had. Your tutorials makes me not just remember my childhood but also, to start drawing again. :] You're amazing, congratulations!
I love the excitement of looking at the subscription section of youtube and finding that Mark Crilley has uploaded a video! I'm sure everyone else is the same, thank you Mark.
it’s been 10 years but i still use the tips in your videos! i’ve nostalgically come back to watch your older videos and it’s like a blast from the past lol. also loved your akiko books i still think of them everytime i hear someone say the appendix is useless
I want to thank you very much Mark for re-uploading this. I was browsing through some your older videos recently and always felt down when I see that they don't have sound. ): But when I saw this in my subscription, it just made my day.
it really helps how you explain where to put the eye, or how far to start the ear, that helps ALOT!!! I like it when you just do ONE project at a time tho, you dont go as fast. I havent drawn all your tutorial drawings but I am working on it..,you make it easy to draw my folder is getting full and I am having so much fun and makes me proud of myself, I could always look at something and draw it but I could NOT get the eyes nose mouth eyebrows right,....thank you so much for your patience
Wow. You know as someone who has been using and watching youtube for this many years, I have never seen someone as humble and as courteous as Mr. Crilley has been to his viewers. Thanks a lot Mr. Crilley for showing that there is still some sense of politeness in the world. Mark Crilley FTW!!!!!!! XD
Mr. Crilley, you explained so much that I didn't quite understand or even see in drawing profiles. Hopefully I will be able to start correcting them and improving my drawings. Thank you. Well done!
Thank you very much for all your videos !! I think what you do is amazing, first you draw very well on every aspects and second you share that with million of people on earth! You rock!
Show how to draw the whole head first. Not just the face, but the whole head. That's the only way proportions will work and be right. Well, at least for some artists. What works for one artist doesn't work for another.
I just want to compliment you on your technique. It's obvious that you are very well versed in drawing anatomically correct figures and you have a lot of experience. I love how every stroke is shockingly close to perfection. ^^ Thanks for your videos.
i don't know how to draw but by watching your videos i learn a lot and i try to draw it myself.. your videos inspire me to learn more. thanks for the detailed tutorials. love it!!!!!
Man, you're my favorite artist, no lie. I would love it if you make a tutorial on weather or something like that. Your videos are always helpful, so I'm sure that would be a great idea. Thunderstorms, blizzards, sunny days, etc. that would rock!
Thanks. This was a major help for me. I could get everything on a side view, but the lips tripped me up every time. Thank you for all your help! And I love Miki Falls.
Oh I thank you so much for this video! I have been having so much trouble with profiles. I find it very helpful, you did a good job describing everything.
You got Manga books published, you really are amazing! And I do prefer more exaggerated anime styles like the last one you did, but your style that you already have is amazing!
So yeah... YOU AWESOME. I have never seen anyone draw like that! You are one of the few people that actually inspires me to draw! Keep up the good wofk
Hey Mark, I have watched a TON of your videos and drawn a ton. I have two drawing books FILLED with most drawings that are inspired by you. You have taken me all the way. I am now going out and drawing people that ask me to and they LOVE IT!!!! You are amazing at what you do and have helped me a LOT. Keep up the AMAZING work. :)
also when working in profile view, if the character is looking forward, then make sure you line up the edge of the eye thts closest to the nose to the eyelid crease so it appears more correct!
At the end of the last video I watched I said "I really want to know how to do faces in profile" or something like that. Then I go through the suggestions and here it is. Thanks so much for your great videos, they seem to have just the tip I need to get my drowings closer to perfect.
Ive gotten better at profile and my eyes and I thank you for that. My friend also watches your videos and shes getting better then me! keep up the good work.
woot thanks so much for the tips. i haven't been happy with my style for some time. but this is helping quite a lot. also i loved your books. they are different..i always liked different.
Ah, Yes I remember this vid as well!!! Thnx much, I was starting to miss the pencil scratches during your time-lapse drawings, but I don't mind the music playing during times-lapse either! ;) thnx again! ;)
I've always had trouble with profile view. Sometimes I can make them look right, but not very consistently. I've watched and read a lot of tutorials for it, but none of them were very useful. This one, though, was extremely helpful.
Watching Mark Crilley, drawing manga, and listening to Miku and Luka's magnet on repeat; I'm digging that right now. Speaking of, do you think you could do some tutorials on drawing vocaloid-esque characters? :)
i got your book that your showing in this video and im AFTER telling my class who I'm upsessed with and its you mark and your talenet and also your books miki falls!
I learned the rules to drawing manga--the shape of the head, the guide lines, the chin angles. I cannot believe that within one month I have became a good manga artist. Thank you. Frank

Mark thanks for taking the time to show us all ,your how to draw chin video. I myself do infact like the 3rd face, I may check out full metal alchemist now ha ha !
You're so amazing, while filming you're always like, "So this goes from here to here...this distance away" but really quick, BAM BAM it's done, you know everything, where did you learn to draw manga?
hey crilley this is awesome and helpful but it would've been even better if you would've shown us how you started it all out. like the head and neck and all that.
UR THE BEST ARTIST I KNOW! I tried to draw the female one but when I got so frustrated, I tilted my computer moniter on its back, put a piece of blank paper over it, get a pencil and eraser, and then trace over it. Came out perfect! Thumbs up if u did the same thing!
hey mark! so today i was at my library and i was looking in the anime section. i never thought to look for miki falls i dunno why. but i saw it and i was like " chaa! hey i know this guy! he does those awesome youtube tutorials!" and i knew you had a book called miki falls out. so i checked it out and DUDE! its amazing!! im going to buy my own copies!!
She has a very pretty and soft profile, and I love the first male profile~ I'm actually not much of a fan of manga character profiles which basically have just a line from the nose to the chin, but you drew it very well~
I have trouble with this kind of stuff and you have been very helpful along the way, I wish I could meet you one say and be an awesome drawer like you. Do a video on how to draw city backgrounds, I really want to draw a city and you could be a great help
I think it would be really nice if you did a video on how to draw a face at an angle. Because, alot of the time when I'm trying to draw a face at an angle, it can be a bit akward when you're trying to find out where the further eye is and how close it is to the nose or if it's slightly behind the nose.
you say that you r not very good at this but i think that u r the bast, cause no 1 else can teach as good and as clear as u do, and your drawings turn out to be perfect
I would love to watch a video of you just "Sketching Faces" as in, just really loose drawings where you rarely take your pencil off the page. I do practices where i make as many simplistic faces in 5 minutes as possible. It really keeps your wrist very lose , instead of drawing how you write, you hold your pencil more towards the eraser.
Love the drawings though ur vids are so helpful!!! Before I couldn't draw anything but manga cats now I am getting way better at drawing realalistic manga
Let me just say, I love you. You are amazing manga artist! You should do a how to draw anthros video. (I'm not a fur myself, but I do some request boards on iscribble and would like some of that knowledge.)
holy jesus on a stick! I had so much trouble with the last one! But finaly I got it, thanks very much for your tutorials, makes things easyer since you explain a lot~!
I think the 3/4 profile on the mouth was designed to speed up the process of creating anime. Anyway I love the drawing and I waish I could draw like him!
i just got done reading brodys ghost book 1 and i have 2 say it was much better than i was expecting! id subscribe again if i could lol iv just bought book 2, cant wait for it to arrive ^^
I've drawn so many maga profiles all over everything I own, all my school books and on every desk in my school. now I can almost do it without looking, my hand does it on its own.
Great video. it helped me draw in profile. do you think you make a vid on how to draw someone who is also looking away but you can only see a small part of the eye?
It'd be great if you could make a video on how to draw a smile, like a real grin. I just can't get it right with the teeth. I haven't seen any smiles like that in your drawing yet, and your videos are really helpful. Could you do a video on how to draw a grin?
The nose is the length of a thumb (and the face, from chin to hairline, is the length of a hand). The length of the thumb also establishes the normal (human, not necessarily manga or anime) length between tip of chin and crook of neck (where jaw merges with neck), and it is ALSO the length between that point and the pit of the collar bones at the base of the neck. Body proportions and their relations to one another are really neat. Not so much helpful for drawing though. ^_^ Love the video!
I've bought a few 'how-to' manga books in my time, but none has helped me as much as your videos. Thank you!
Zoe Hayes Thank you Zoe! ^^
Your manga books have helped me to become a way better artist! Just a few MINUTES ago, I was looking at drawing tutorials, and I saw your channel. Lets just say i was... SUPER HAPPY! Show how to draw the whole head first. Not just the face, but the whole head. That's the only way proportions will work and be right. Well, at least for some artists. What works for one artist doesn't work for another.
He has other videos of how to draw the head from different perspectives, not JUST this video. You would know if you checked.
I just want to compliment you on your technique. It's obvious that you are very well versed in drawing anatomically correct figures and you have a lot of experience. I love how every stroke is shockingly close to perfection. ^^ Thanks for your videos.
Very interesting technique for the mouth in the last drawing. Definitely something I'm gonna try out.
Great video as always Mark C. and ty!
i don't know how to draw but by watching your videos i learn a lot and i try to draw it myself.. your videos inspire me to learn more. thanks for the detailed tutorials. love it!!!!!
I have all of your books and think you are a truly original and creative manga artist and writer!
Man, you're my favorite artist, no lie. I would love it if you make a tutorial on weather or something like that. Your videos are always helpful, so I'm sure that would be a great idea. Thunderstorms, blizzards, sunny days, etc. that would rock!
I'm learning from a lot of your videos and applying them to drawing of my characters. It's great to see my characters coming to life! Thanks, Mark :D

Thank you mark! You actually have taught me how to draw most of my anime and manga!
You are really a cool guy. Always so humble, which is something I don't really see from alot of people who draw around where I live. Cool videos man.
Oh thank you, I had some problems on these. Especially around the neck and chin. Keep up the good work~nya!
This is a huge help, I needed help drawing faces from the side and I could never get it correct, but this is video was a huge help.
ty so much for this video! i had a hard time with the profile drawing, expecially the lip area!
Very good tutorial, thank you for the upload! I always have trouble with drawing profiles.
@Cilyhn I know, right? Good voice for teaching. Calm and kind yet demanding of respect.
Great videos! You give good tips and these actually help me to improve my manga drawings!
also when working in profile view, if the character is looking forward, then make sure you line up the edge of the eye thts closest to the nose to the eyelid crease so it appears more correct!

um i think I learned THE MOST from you!!!!!! your soo humble!!you are my inspiration!!!
I will definitely be picking up one of your Miki Falls Comic! Thank you for the awesome tutorials, they helped out a lot! Keep up the good work! =D
You're brilliant-- I love your soft style of drawing! :D Do you have any foreshortening tutorials? :)
Ah, Yes I remember this vid as well!!! Thnx much, I was starting to miss the pencil scratches during your time-lapse drawings, but I don't mind the music playing during times-lapse either! ;) thnx again! ;)
I love it when Mark talks, and or nerdy anime to us!
Oh my gosh thank you so much! I'm so bad at drawing faces in profile and this just cleared everything up. You have videos for everything! :D
koolzebra Thank you!
I can't believe how much you share! This is awesome :)
I've always had trouble with profile view. Sometimes I can make them look right, but not very consistently. I've watched and read a lot of tutorials for it, but none of them were very useful. This one, though, was extremely helpful.
I recommended both Brody's Ghost and Miki Falls to my librarian at school and she said she would try to get them. I am excited to read them.
Watching Mark Crilley, drawing manga, and listening to Miku and Luka's magnet on repeat; I'm digging that right now. Speaking of, do you think you could do some tutorials on drawing vocaloid-esque characters? :)
Thank you for re uploading, it´s a lot better with audio.
i got your book that your showing in this video and im AFTER telling my class who I'm upsessed with and its you mark and your talenet and also your books miki falls!
I learned the rules to drawing manga--the shape of the head, the guide lines, the chin angles. I cannot believe that within one month I have became a good manga artist. I am single, and I intend to show girls my manga sketches on my phone, and even be prepared to draw a face for them in person. I think that it will be a sweet way of getting a girl interested in me. Thank you. Frank
You are my hero!!! ♥o♥ Thx to you i am finally starting to draw right!! Thankyou so much for these tutorials!
you can get those types of pencils on amazon for cheap and free shipping just brought some
+markcrilley I started watching your videos years back after someone said my (non-drawing) videos had me sounding like you! We don't have the same accent, but I guess the relaxed, casual tone (I do 'How to" ones, too). Since then I have revived my desire to cartoon/GN. I've now purchased all your instructional books, and the BG series is in the mail. I have dozens of art, anatomy, and figure drawing titles that I'm sketching from, and although I can't read the Japanese, I enjoy many instructional books from there. I didn't spend as much time as you did in 日本, but drew (see what I did there?) a lot from it's whacky new-meets-old culture. I've avoided reading GA novels, for fear of developing copy-cat styles of 'cartooning', so the BG series will be my first.
Just so you know, I decided based on Amazon allowing you to look at a few pages of a book ("Look Inside"), so take advantage of that feature! I was unreasonably surprised to see your video 'lessons' in the frames of the preview. I don't know why I expected there to be a difference. I guess you could say you 'walk the walk'? Another reason, after watching many, many of your videos, is that I respect someone who tips their hat to others' work, as you often do. It's like when your local announcer mentions when the visiting team makes a great play. Little things like that.
Not sure what you would call it, but I think I am most drawn (get it?) to what I can only call 'close to realistic' style of characters. From what I can tell, this is your style for BG. Do you have a term for it that's better than mine?
So after all that, I have a question for you. Allow me to set it up. Many times when you are video'ing a drawing(?!), you are starting out with some portion already done. I've seen you have a cleared area in a larger drawing, or just hair & neck, waiting for features. My question is, in these cases, or when starting out from blank 'canvas', do you _already_ see the final in your "mind's eye"? Or are you still bringing it into focus as you go? You are so comfortable/practiced that I really can't tell. My money is on you seeing it as almost complete, and you are 'tracing' it, as it were.
Can you comment at all on that?
I will forever have the term 'blushies' in my vocabulary, and am _still_ coming to terms with "indicate".
I ha've been drawing my entire life (from 5 years old, i don't want to exaggetate) learning from my father who has studied art in Belgium, and i'm drawing very well all i needed to do is practice. So, if you want to draw well you must practice, and if you have difficulties, look how you can do it better. Like me, i've watched this video to learn how to draw character's profile because i had difficulties on that (just like the hands)
She's so pretty~ I like how you drew the girl's profile! :D
I just finished Miki Falls. LOVED the story! I highly recommend it, even if the chins are a little too big. : )
As soon as this guy puts pencil to paper you can just tell he's about to create a masterpiece ♥
I subscribed to you
hey mark! so today i was at my library and i was looking in the anime section. i never thought to look for miki falls i dunno why. but i saw it and i was like " chaa! hey i know this guy! he does those awesome youtube tutorials!" and i knew you had a book called miki falls out. so i checked it out and DUDE! its amazing!! im going to buy my own copies!!

your faces have such life in them ~ fantastic!
you say that you r not very good at this but i think that u r the bast, cause no 1 else can teach as good and as clear as u do, and your drawings turn out to be perfect
You fantastic. I will definitely be buying both brody's ghost and miki falls.
@thisallie wait for the video to fully render, it should be 480p or maybe 720p when it is fully rendered. Check back in 15 or 20 minutes.
Thank you for this video!! The mouth is always the hardest part for me when drawing a profile figure.
Mark you are really really really really really really really good at drawing and art in general you are my idol
Love the drawings though ur vids are so helpful!!! Before I couldn't draw anything but manga cats now I am getting way better at drawing realalistic manga
Thumbs Up for Mark to make Us a Series where he draws characters from Other Mangas in his own style!
Let me just say, I love you. You are amazing manga artist! You should do a how to draw anthros video. (I'm not a fur myself, but I do some request boards on iscribble and would like some of that knowledge.)
WoW you are GREAT at explaining!! thanks sooo much and i want to read ur manga!!
Thanks! I've been wondering how to draw in profile for a while now. At 3: 27 you indirectly taught me how to draw a snout. Double thanks? :D
Mark, can you please do a video on different body piercings? I know it sounds weird, but I think it would be a very fun, interesting topic.
05:44 "And again, I'm not a huge expert on this stuff" lol. You are the best!! :D
holy jesus on a stick! I had so much trouble with the last one! But finaly I got it, thanks very much for your tutorials, makes things easyer since you explain a lot~!
These videos definitely need to be higher resolution
For some reason at 7:32 when he said it would look bizare I laughed a bit. Thanks for this Mr. Crilley :)
Speaking of drawing faces in profile from tv shows like Bleach and FMA, could you try a style from a show called "Soul Eater"?
I think the 3/4 profile on the mouth was designed to speed up the process of creating anime. Anyway I love the drawing and I waish I could draw like him!
Thanks for this. I remember when my mom taught me how to draw a profile. thumbs up for this video.
you should sell or have giveaways of sketches. :3 I love your art.
i just got done reading brodys ghost book 1 and i have 2 say it was much better than i was expecting!
id subscribe again if i could lol
iv just bought book 2, cant wait for it to arrive ^^
I love the way this guy makes jokes while hes drawing , it keeps the mood light.
I hope he does a tutorial on how to draw buildings in different perspectives.
Wow. Ur videos are amazing. =D you're really good at drawing. I've been learning a lot of manga techniques from these videos. Keep it up! =D
