Their friendship spans decades and Lionel Ritchie wrote the song. Pitched it to the Commodores and they turned it down. So he gave it to Kenny. Lifelong close friends forever. An absolute pleasure and a blessing to hear them do this song together. ❤️
Lionel was thinking of going solo at the time and got a call from Kenny to help him write songs for Kenny's new album. Lionel came up with song in only a few hours. This is one of Kenny's biggest hits.
I'm not sure where I heard him say it anymore (it may have even been on this concert if you watch it in its entirety), but Lionel had the music and melody written but had no words the day of recording. So......he went to the bathroom, sat down and wrote the words. You can fill in the blanks! :)
@@skroy8671 The whole story is told by Kenny in exactly this the video reviewed here, unfortunately, Ty skipped the part and went straight for the song.
@@skroy8671 “I’m not used to pitching songs, but I had this song called, ‘Baby,’” Richie says. “I land in Vegas and all I prepared is the first verse, the way I would normally do it for the Commodores.” Rogers’ former road manager, Garth Shaw, then picks up the story, noting that he told Rogers “there’s some songwriter out here and he wants to play you a song.” As Richie starts playing an out-of-tune piano in the dressing room, Rogers begins talking to him about having recently married his fourth wife, Marianne Gordon. “I married a lady, a real lady,” he tells Richie. “A country boy like me from Houston, Texas, what I am doing with a lady… she’s got such taste, such class, such style and she’s such a lady. Oh, by the way, what’s the name of your song?” “I said, ‘Lady,’ Richie says with a laugh. “I’m no fool.”
RIP KENNY...We just lost another legend. It wasn't that long ago that he sang this at the Lionel Richie tribute show where they sang it together on stage. My favorite version of this song.
In spite of their song being about a man's love for his lady, the only thing I really see in this performance is their love for one another. It is beautiful. It reminds me of the love and chemistry that Kenny and Dolly had together.
This was beautifully done. I tip my hat of congratulations to two icons; Mr. Lionel Richie and Mr. Kenny Rogers (R.I.P. good sir. Your music will keep you alive for your fans.)
Lionel and the Commodores used to play in and around Opelika and Auburn when they were students at Tuskegee before they had their first hit, "Machine Gun." Got to meet him and all the Commodores when I worked for the governor of Alabama and he declared a "Commodores Day" and they came to attend the signing of the proclamation.
Those two-- the best of friends. They have been friends for so long and really were there for each other when they both went through tough times in their personal lives. I love both of these men man and their music. No particular reason why I like song. Lionel wrote many songs for Kenny that became huge hits but each of them on their own are phenomenal
Two of my favorite artists! You really need to hear Kenny Rogers sing this when he was younger. He had one of the most beautiful voices I've ever heard. When I first heard this song...in 1989, I think...it gave me chills. His voice was way stronger when he was younger. I love the way these two are so close, but this kind of made me sad...like when I saw the video of Elvis, after he had gotten very sick. Kenny Rogers really messed his face up, with plastic surgery...he doesn't even look like himself here. Thanks for reacting to this, Ty...it's a beautiful song!
These 2 men are legends in the music industry .💥I've heard all their songs..lionel Richie wrote the song and Kenny Rogers made it a FOREVER song..💖love both of them💕
This was a really personal and emotional performance because both men made this song a smash; Lionel for writing and Kenny singing it. Lionel did a great job singing it on his own, but i just think Kenny's is more well known because it was played so much on the radio. But i will never take anything away from Lionel Richie. I love his music in the Commodores and his solo music.
My husband and I saw Kenny Rogers in concert 3 different times. He puts on a great show with all his hits! The one time his opening act was an unknown Garth Brooks who was so good that we both knew he was going places. By the next year he did hit it big with “Friends in Low Places”! One of the great things about living right outside of Detroit is we get to see so many great concerts and we do enjoy them so much!! ❤️🎵
What is so amazing here is that they were long time best friends and both performers and this was going to be the last opportunity for them to sing that song together.
From the 70's on Lionel Ritchie has no peer when it comes to love songs. "You Are", "Easy", "Sail On", "My Love", "Penny Lover", "Hello", "Truly", "Ballerina GirL". One of the greatest writers of love songs this country has ever produced. And trust me. A love song is corny until you're old enough to have your heart truly broken once or twice. Then they become a revelation. I wish they would replay this special.
Oh how I love these two. My day could be rotten as hell, and suddenly I hear one of them and my day turns around. My friend sang this song to his wife at their wedding. Nothing like that, but he did his best.
Lady -- Sold So Millions / Plus it was the No.#1 Song 20 times between 1977 - 2000... Lionel Richie Wrote and Produced the song; so He made twice as much as Kenny.... Great Song!!! Forever a Hit!
That was awesome! It's stuff like this that makes me really long for the 1980s! Man, those were some great times. Now, I'm all emotional. Thanks a lot (he says sarcastically)!
i lost a musical Hero on the 20th of march Mr Kenny Rogers Died at the age of 81 I am still at a lose for words and am very sad now i will miss Kenny Rogers every day Kenny Rogers is gone but his music will live on forever R.I.P Kenny Rogers and thanks for over 60 years of great music
I have always liked all of Lionel Richie's song. This video of Kenny Rogers and Lionel Richie was really good. I wish would do more songs by Lionel Richie, Please and thank you.
Despite the overwhelming talent, skill, and magic that this song and fame that has followed with it, I see two old cats that have one of the greatest friendships we all can only hope to achieve that surpasses all barriers.
Love these two guys. They've made many great songs . One of my favorite Kenny Rodgers song: Through The Years which I dedicated to my wife for sticking with me for 50 years. My favorite Lionel Ritchie song: Endless Love a duo with Diana Ross.
I know he would have if he had known and I never imagined he would follow a suggestion in the comments on the video. Honest mistake by MRM, so it's all good. I do hope others will look at the original video to see the opening. It's great. th-cam.com/video/vc8IN-FnRic/w-d-xo.html
The beginning of the video that it looks like you skipped past has Kenny telling the story of how he asked Lionel to write a song for him. It's really funny the way he tells it.
I wish you had started at the beginning instead of 2 minutes in to it. You can tell how fond they of each other, they truly were. They had been very close friends since they wrote Lady together. RIP Kenny Rogers!
Love this song. Kenny had a such a unique voice. Lionel...great voice and very talented song writer. You should check out Lionel's road from Commodores (70s) to his 80s solo career.
It's funny to no that Lionel Richie wrote this song and then he got Kenny Rogers to sing it and we all know that both of them are two of the greatest legends ever and put them together it explodes and to me when it comes down to Kenny Rogers and country music he is one of the all-time greats and his voice just keeps getting better every single year.
Oh, man, it has been AGES since I've even thought about this song. The Kenny Rogers version was popular when I was in high school back in the early 1980s and I remember listening to it on Sunday nights and wishing I had a boyfriend who thought of me like that :-).
Hey, Ty. I’ve loved seeing your musical journey through about ten of your videos. I love how you get right into it & enjoy what you have to say about the music. Makes me cry.... These guys are brothers !.... No colors, no hate, no politics....
Just love and respect for each other
RIP KENNY

I'm a HUGE Kenny fan and I am mega thankful to Lionel for giving this song to him!

He is 79 yrs old in this video.... That fact might explain his appearance
When this song came out, pop country was big...i.e: crossover hit. Lionel Ritchie was THE man. Lyrics and singing brought this to a hit.
Two dudes goofin' around and having fun and killin' it at the same time.
This video shows the true definition of “brotherly love”. It shows the love is colorblind.
Lionel Richie is one of my favorite songwriters and singers of all time. The man is incredible!
I have always loved Kenny and Lionel's voices, and they excelled on this song.
Your voice is eternally among the angels and spirits my friend. Rest easy, kenny

Timeless voices and timeless friendships!! Its hard to have "New old friends" enjoy and respect the friends you have like Lionel and Kenny.
Love both these men. Would you react to Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton singing islands in the stream it’s wonderful🎤❤️
The Bee gee wrote Islands in the streams

That was beautiful, two of my favorite artists singing the song that I really love when they sing it separately, together. Made my day.
The love, respect and admiration these 2 men have for each other is awesome to witness!
I personally think that people forget about how big of a Super Star that Kenny was back in the day. I even remember his Dole commercials in the 80's.

Lionel did a great job when he penned it!
2 Legends..Kenny started out singing/playing/writing jazzy/bluesy/r&b, then pop, then more country-ish/pop!!💜
Your beliefs are on point. Been subbed for over a year. Great channel.

Lady song by the late great Kenny rogers and rope by Lionel Richie 1 of my mothers favorite songs when I hear I just think of her smile
