  • This motor was "gifted" to my be my buddy Ben Dittmar (Chrylseroutboarddude) at Tomahawk 2022. It turned out to be one of the nicest running air cooled Eskas I have ever run.

    Ahh, the memories. My father bought an identical motor in the early 70s. I still have it in my shed and should probably look up the model number. I'm guessing about 1975 or slightly earlier. That sound is something I'll never forget. The motor ended up getting swamped when the boat it was on "sank". The boat was nosed up on shore and a freak storm kicked up and splashed waves over the back of the boat and sank it before anybody got to it. My father tore it down and rebuilt it, but it never did run the same.
    FYI, I have an owner's manual for an identical looking 7.5, as well as an Eska service manual that states to use BIA Certified TC-W oil mix 32:1. 24:1 if not using TC-W. The service manual also states to use 24:1 TC-W oil for 1970 to 1973 motors, and 16:1 for 1969. I guess that was the first year of Tecumseh/Eska motors.
    Thanks again (as usual) for the trip down memory lane.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  ปีที่แล้ว

      Glad I was able to stir those memories. Eska motors ran from 1961 to 1987. I have seen the manuals recommended TC-W oils as well, which I always found rather interesting since the only thing water cooled on these is the exhaust end to prevent the housing from getting too hot and from burning up the lower crankshaft seal. They are air cooled engines that run at air cooled temperatures. Air cooled oils are made to run at those higher temperatures. At any rate, either one is better than non detergent crankcase oil that all 2-strokes used to use. It's too bad yours got sunk and never was quite right after that. While these motors are nothing special in and of themselves, the history you have with yours would make it extra cool to be able to run it now and then just for nostalgia. Thanks for watching!

    I have a few of them and the air-cooled Tecumseh power head last for ever. My 3hp eska has over 1500 hours on it and still works great. I have a 5.5 like this one and have had it overheat with the cover on the motor. No issues with it off. My favorite is my 3hp and my 7.5. People knock them but I think there great. The liquid cooled twins have major ignition problems. I have a 15hp that causes me problems when ignition gets hot. It is the most powerful 15hp I have ever seen it feels like a 25hp while the air cooled units are less powerful than advertised it may be the gearing and prop because they go close to the same speed on any boat there on.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  หลายเดือนก่อน

      I have a few also. They're not my favorite motors to run, but they're really not bad motors for what they are. The 2-stroke air-cooled Tecumseh powerheads are pretty reliable and very simple. This 5hp is one of the best runners I have. I have a 1981 air-cooled 7.5 Sea King that is the best and strongest running air cooled Tecumseh I own. It is practically brand new still. The Water cooled twins would have been good motors if not for the terrible ignition system. Thanks for watching!

      I also have a motor that I guarantee, absolutely no one watching these videos, has ever seen before. It's a 100% sealed motor, used by special ops during Vietnam. It's an Evinrude platform, but every aspect is set up to be as quiet as possible and if you had to drop it in the water, you could pull it back up and fire it right back up after complete submersion.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  ปีที่แล้ว

      If they're maintained and treated half decent they're pretty good runners. They're simple so that helps. They are just kinda loud and obnoxious for the level of power they put out. I have a 3hp Eska Skipper that runs decent as well. Thanks for watching!

    they use to sell those at Woolco department store 3 hp , 5 hp and 7 1/2 i think couple hundred bucks or so and Eska sold a ton and i suspect most were abused - neglected so that one is super nice a survivor for sure . you have a awesome collection .

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, several department stores sold these motors. They were relatively inexpensive and pretty durable if taken care of. Many were badly abused as you mentioned. This one seems to not have suffered such a fate and is still in remarkable condition and runs beautifully. Thanks for watching!

    I gave away half a dozen of these with various things wrong from internal fuel pumps to impellers and exhaust fried lower main seals. When parts were still readily available this Tecumseh made unit was okay. Tecumseh took over Clinton, and well...the dark days eventually followed.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Most of the ones I have were given to me including this one. There are still parts available for the Tecumseh powerheads at most small engine shops. I think the dark days were for Clinton following the buyout/takeover by Tecumseh. Neither or them were great but both were serviceable. I have a few inton engines and they seem to be a cut above Tecumseh in quality. The other issue with these motors is that they were cheap and were bought by folks who dodnt necessarily maintain their stuff. That has a tendency to lead to a less than stellar reputation in the long run. Thanks for watching!

      The 5hp Eska ran a bit faster than the 4hp Evinrude. From the seat, though, I can certainly say that the Evinrude is much more pleasant to run. Quieter and smoother and just seems more effortless than this. This Eska has to be the best one I have run, though, as the air cooled Eskas go. Thanks for watching!

    Besides how loud they are, at least they are super light! I have a 3 hp that I never run anymore (well, I did run it a couple weeks ago for fun) because of the noise.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, their light weight is certainly an appeal. The noise and vibration is a deterrent. They're not bad motors for what they are. Just a simple air cooled 2-stroke power equipment engine mounted to a lower unit with a pump to cool the exhaust. Simple and effective in concept and limited in reliability only by the engine itself. The Tecumseh air cooled 2-strokes were always kind of hit or miss on power equipment too. Some were really good runners and lasted a long time. Others were barely adequate runners from factory new and a constant battle to keep running. Their 4-strokes were pretty much the same. Not bad engines, but not the most consistent from a quality standpoint. That didn't do their reputation any favors over the years. Thanks for watching!

    Hey I got a question what type of oil use this motor cause I got one but it don’t start they need a mix with what type of fuel ???

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      These, being air cooled engines, can use an air cooled 2-stroke oil such as what is used in a chain saw or weed trimmer. Some outboard oils are suitable for both air cooled and water cooled engines. Most of those are synthetic oils. That oil should be mixed with gasoline (ethanol free is preferred) at a ratio of at least 40:1. I usually run 24:1 in mine. Thanks for watching!

    I aquired a 9.5 and a 4.5 eska. I had no interest in them so I passed them to my neighbor at the lake as he had a 3.5 eska that needed parts. The same day I gave it to him he took the carb off the 4.5 and installed it on his 3.5 and his son was cruisin down the lake again. That made me happy.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404

      Eska built quite a lot of entry level outboards back in their day. They built the Ted Williams and Gamefisher outboards for Sears as well until Force got the contract for Sears in the later years. The Cruise and Carry I believe was built by the Japanese manufacturer Tanaka. Eska did not build those motors. Thanks for watching!

      This motor had a remote tank connector installed from the factory. There is a duckbill pump internal to the carburetor. Congratulations on your new boat and motor. This motor does not require a pressure tank. I'm only using it because it has 24:1 mix in it and I prefer to run these on 24:1 even when they are rated for 50:1. I'm using the adapter to go to single line from dual line OMC then to the Chrysler/Eska fitting on the motor. All you need is a single line tank and a line for the Chrysler/Eska fitting on the motor to make it work. Those parts are available at many marinas, boat supply shops, online sources, etc. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!
