- Which One More Emotionally Satisfying? How 2023 BMW I4 eDrive35 Handles Twisty Roads Compare to 2023 Tesla Model 3 RWD.
In this video I take BMW i4 to the canyon roads, discuss it's handling and compare to Tesla Model 3 RWD.

The BMW i4 also has a low center of gravity as the battery is situated right under the seats just like the TM3... the difference in handling here I would say is 1) BMW i4 is heavier than the TM3 and 2) BMW i4 tires on the i4 you are testing here are narrower than the TM3. It's just physics here that goes against the BMW i4. If you add the upgraded 19" wheels and wider 245/255mm tires that you can get with the BMW i4 I think the handling would be noticeably better. Can't upgrade to reduce the weight though...
One thing I noticed is how well Tesla demonstrates low center of gravity. Base Model 3 has regular 18” wheels and they are 235 wide. I4 was 225 wide. But regardless of the tires Model 3 corners flat and easy with a feel like a center of the car is being held by the road. This allows base Model 3 carry much higher speed through the corners even on regular tires. I4 on the other hand didn’t feel any different than a regular 4 series with exception of being heavy and reluctant to corner at slightly faster speeds. Maybe if the weight was less it would feel completely different. I wonder how i4 M50 feels in the corners.
I'm not sure that the BMW buyer is someone who is even considering a Tesla. There is a major difference in fit and finish and interior quality between the two cars (and also, of course, a price difference.)
Thanks for your comment. Initially when Tesla Model 3 just launched Elon Musk stated they built Model 3 to target BMW 3 series owners and indeed some surveys did state that many BMW owners switched to Tesla. I don’t know if that is still the case. Many are switching back for BMW quality. Also if you read some of the comments under my videos where I compared BMW to Tesla there are fans on both sides.
Very unbiased and honest video! Can you do a dynamic drive of the NEW Model S and Model X?
Thanks a lot for your feedback. I am considering Model S Plaid. Can't give any exact days but certainly will try to bring it to the channel. Model X will follow. Also Model 3 Performance and Model Y Standard range.
I used to race Go-Karts. No the Tesla M3 doesn't handle like one.
Thanks for your comment. Well Tesla Model 3 is not a go-kart, but rather an analogy that it mimics the idea of go-kart driving with it’s flat cornering ability and fast steering
Would you guys go from an m340i 2023 to an i4 e35/40 ?
Hi there. M340i has M-Sport suspension and firmer ride. I4 e35/40 will be heavier and more relaxed. It still has BMW DNA but feels different. Highly recommend to rent 1 for a day and try it out.
Yea, the last thing I want is a faster rough riding sport car. I like to travel in comfort, that is why I got the I4. I hate the huge center only console of the tesla and all the goofy extra's I have no reason to use. Don't get me wrong, the tesla is a quality car. Its just after driving both. The I4 was the clear winner for me.
thanks for the feedback. I can see how you can choose an i4 over Model 3. There are so many factors to consider. These 2 cars are so different. One thing I liked about i4 is that it feels like a normal car. It's very easy to transition from ICE car to an EV like BMW i4. With Tesla some people love them and some absolutely hate.
You can watch my other 2 videos on BMW i4 where I basically drive it on city streets and highway and discuss the difference against Model 3.
The Tesla has some nice things to it, but "quality" is not one of them.
Not an Apples to Apples comparison. But great information. I have both vehicles and the low end Model 3 compared to the low end i4... Not much of a fight. I4 is a Car, a BMW! The build quality blows away my model 3. I agree the 3 seems a bit 'zippy'er, but you get over that really fast when you get in to the power-centric driving mode. it happens for all EV owners. Once that happens the feel of a real car blows away any of the bells and whistles (Fart machine aside) that you get with Tesla!
Thanks for the feedback. I do like both Model 3 and BMW i4. I think BMW did a good job overall.
I have a BMW i4 eDrive 40 M sport and it is the best car I have ever owned. I think as always it comes down to one personal preference.
Yes personal preference is the key. I just hope people spend time with the car before buying it versus doing a test drive around a dealer block. I am curiois to drive eDrive40 and 50 as well to see how different they feel compare to eDrive35
@@100miledrive40 is MUCH better. It’s a great balance of power and handling
Ok, got it thank you. I do see many folks praising eDrive40
@@100miledrive yes! I have an eDrive, not x
Does anyone know what the rear wheel drive i4 is like driving in the wet and snow? I really want one of these but I've never driven a rear wheel drive before, but I hear a lot of bad things about weather that's not sunny. I know someone with a Mercedes and he sold it because it was terrible in the wet.
Good question. One thing for sure i4 is quite heavier than regular 4 series or Tesla Model 3 Base, so in the corners it feels the weight even though this car is fairly stable. But wet conditions change the rules of the game. I can only suggest to find one on Turo (not sure where you are located) and experience it on wet surfaces if it rains now in your region. I remember I had similar issue with our 2002 Mazda 3. It was such a good handling car until it rained one day and it was sliding all over.
I’m interested to see how the EV game will change when the tax credits end for some of the Tesla models.
I believe Tesla did go for about 2 years without a Tax credit and people were still buying it, but if it happens now, not sure. There are a lot more options available and I feel Tesla needs to bring more innovations in their cars, what they have feels quite outdated
The only issue is the i4 costs so much more than the m3, and that's before you add options. Amazing car to drive though
Yes, that is true. If you were to lease i4 vs Model 3 then it's roughly $100 difference per month. If you were to buy then i4 is over $10K. You might be able to negotiate $1000-$2,000 off MSRP but i4 still more expensive. Compare to Tesla Model 3 i4 looks more luxurious car, so I guess you could say you are paying for the luxury. But tech wise and pure EV experience Tesla in it's own category that some love and become raving fans and some hate outright.
@@100miledrive On a dealer lot there is maybe one BMW i4 and why fight the dealer? Tesla is built your way at home.
@@edwsal59 Tesla basically created a new model where you pay the price you see online without all the dealer hassles. You can see similar approach is also being taken by traditional auto makers now after pandemic and you can even buy car online. While no-haggle price is an easy way to buy a car, however if you learn all the tricks and negotiating tactics you can still get discounts on regular cars (provided stock is available). Anyway I think if manufacturers can offer a fair price without huge mark-ups I would love to pay a price you see online and avoid the hassles of negotiating.
It's a lot bigger difference than that at the moment. Tesla are currently offering 0% finance so the difference is closer to £300-£400!
3 things I know are true:
1: my wife loves her i4 edrive35. We all do.
1: my wife doesn't handle turns/curves very well and is prone to throwing up on really twisty roads.
2: my wife is prone to stay away from and vocally disapprove of psychopathic billionaires who sexually assault women and who otherwise treat other people and animals like garbage.
Thanks for sharing. Looks like you have many reasons to like new i4 eDrive35. It's certainly a pleasant car to drive. In this particular video I just drove it on the twisty road to see it's character. You can watch Part 1 video where I drove it in the city and highway to discuss my overall impression of i4 versus Tesla.
Thanks for stopping by.
Like the car choice, not the rhetoric. Love my Model 3... REALLY love my i4-e40!
Your point 2 is exactly why I never would take a Tesla also not as a free given company car. My personal view of responsibility, behavior etc is not compatible with this person. I will try to do anything that Musk will not earn any cent with one of my actions
i want to buy your wife
Why are you comparing such a high priced car to the cheapest Tesla you can buy? The i4 is $60k and above, while with rebates you can get a base model 3 in California for $25k.
Hi there. Please check BMW USA website on the starting price of i4. Base BMW i4 which is eDrive35 starts from $52,200. If you check leasehack forums some able to get 2-5% off MSRP of Base i4.
Tesla Model 3 RWD starts at $40,240. Not very long ago Model 3 Standard Range was offered at around $47-$48K and didn't have full $7500 rebate. So technically their price was very close to each other just few months ago.
Their tech specs also match very closely, so these are the 2 cars that are often compared one against each other.
Yea as 100mile drive stated. The Tesla is 40k +. I was looking at both to buy. The BMW to me was the better value for $. But as explained in this video, it all depends on what you are looking for.
The Tesla is the way to go if you want something cheaper. But it shows, rough riding, noisy, no available HUD, laser lights, high end ambient lighting, premium materials, and not as common as a house fly. Taking that into consideration, the BMW is the better value to me.
@@hotrod182 Yes, Tesla basically is not about luxury, but more so about new type of tech and pure EV experience. I found Model 3 to be more fun to drive if you like more spirited driving style and i4 is more mature calm and luxury with BMW DNA. I kind of like them both. Curious about i4 M50 to see what was done by M division.
