- Fuel Tanker Truck EXPLOSION Shuts Down Freeway. This was a job where you wonder how the heck there were no fatals let alone injuries. The semi truck exploded from below, causing the frame itself to burst apart. It's pretty dark, but you can see the separation when Alex inspects it and how huge the gap is.
A huge hazmat job like this has a lot of multi agency coordination due to the inherent danger of the scene. Both fuel tankers were fully loaded, so you can imagine how many ways a job like this can go wrong. Luckily we sent Alex in Big Flipper, our 75ton rotator, to handle the job with the care it needs.
You'll notice right away that once Pepe's is on scene, almost all agencies seem at peace knowing we got the job because they know our reputation and know the job will get done safely and without any further issues. I tried to trim it down as much as possible while leaving the action and explaining, so the hours of standby time in the beginning is cut up. The actual job itself took Alex half an hour, if that.
He decided to use dual spreader bars for maximum control and safety. Spreader bars allow us to lift things like a tanker without crushing the tank itself. Once rigged, Alex rotated to separate the tanker truck from the second tanker, then rotated 180 degrees to place onto the Landoll driven by Castro.
All in all an excellent job, with half a dozen (CHP, Fire Department, County Hazmat, CalTrans, Ocean Blue and the tanker company) agencies working together to clear the freeway fast. What did you guys think of Alex's job?

Alex is one of the most patient and courteous wrecker operators I've seen. He skillfully and professionally handled all the different personalities on scene. Also, like the respect that LAFD Haz Mat member has for Pepe's!
Alex is such an excellent ambassador for Pepe's. He's obviously very knowledgeable and good at his job, he's great at explaining what he's doing and why to the audience, and his calm demeanor & professionalism in dealing with clients and law enforcement is a real asset.

Amazing to hear how impressed the firefighter is about Pepe's. Shows how hard you all worked to get where you are, and how high your standards are!
Alex has the patience of a saint! Dealing with all those different agencies would drive me crazy.

This video is tribute to all engineers that designed and built this compact monster on the wheels. In Alex hands it just shines. Everyone is watching like is he really serious. Meanwhile Alex casually pops the drone for (cough) youtube (cough) insurance :D Priceless.

I definitely commend Alex for his patience and humility when dealing with the different ones from the fire dept, to the cops, to the driver of the burned truck. We need more operators like that out here. Definitely enjoyed the video as a fellow tow operator out of Chicago I always pick up little nuggets here an there from your videos. I agree with the fire department, no reason to lift a loaded wrecked tanker truck. Great work as always though you guys are so willing to help and give incite since it's what you do every day!
No reason not to with the proper equipment in the proper situation either, but id argue when the offload truck is stuck in traffics and hours behind something has to be done.
@@towtruckaj Yes, agreed. I believe Alex was proposing that they just tow the loaded burned tanker, as long as it wasn't leaking. It would have been much faster. However, FD has it's rules.
@@IceColdGeico At the end of the day as tow operators we really don't care, we can do things however they need to be done to work around other agencies and we bill by the hour, If they want us waiting for hours to do it a specific way, so be it... Just isn't so beneficial to the customer nor the motoring public stuck on the interstate for multiple hours when it could have been done it 30 minutes, But at the end of the day we have to work with other agencies not against them so fire, police, engineers office, dot, etc we all work together for the greater good.

@@saintchuck9857 If it isn't leaking and there are no signs of warping, no visible holes, no discoloration, etc then there is no problem, Mind you it's extremely difficult to compromise a tank with heat when it is full of liquid.

Excellent job Alex. Your patience and professionalism are top notch. It was awesome how highly that firefighter praised Pepe's. He's a cool dude. The rest of the people on scene unfortunately made the work harder by pushing their weight around and telling you how to do your job. That's gotta be super annoying.

Alex continues to amaze. First a plan and then meticulous execution. Handing out cards, thanking the others at the scene, fantastic public relations. When the "powers" choose unnecessary tasks, Alex just takes it in stride. Then Josh takes the raw video and creates an interesting and useful video. Also timely since it interrupted my biannual house cleaning. Way to go guys.

noticed alot of companies dedicate a whole truck just for the porta john. some are even using the extra bed space for light transport ( cones, barrels, small machinary). its honestly revolutionary. such a basic thing that is very much needed xD

One of the more interesting videos you have made as there were many agencies involved. Although a person has a part 107 drone license, we may not fly over emergency crews without a waiver. Glad you are able to do that without all the waiver delays.
He sure knows his equipment, what he needs, where it's stored, how to connect it, and how to use the rig's power properly, his mind is defiantly working overtime.

There should be a CHP standard OP on approved methods to remove the various materials cargoes. It shouldn’t normally be a discussion on the side of the freeway other than to confirm facts on the ground. Very interesting video and glad I wasn’t on 405 that day!
First class job by Alex as usual. Doing things the Pepe's way. He's quite the cool operator. That handshakes all around leaves a good impression. Imagine how much quicker that job would have been if Alex was able to move the tanker when he got there. Every department has its SOPs and we have to work within them.
Makes me appreciate how confusing and difficult any accident clean up can be. Multiple interests with different perspectives and approaches to safety.

There was only one person whom had working common sense, experience and knowledge of the task at hand. That was Alex. Those firemen and cops have very little mechanical understanding and aptitude. They actually are a hindrance to industry professionals. Kudos to you Alex for your Patience and restraint.
This is what happens when people are making decisions that don’t have the experience. You guys could’ve had that loaded and gone. Really dislike the way they’re treating the little guy that’s just the middle man waiting for the vac truck, how’s he supposed to know the exact roads his guy is taking to get there? Traffic has to be a total mess and the guys in a truck. Always great work by you and the team. 👍
they gave a eta and were late. its very important to open up the freeway as soon as possible. its better to give an OVER estimate eta than an exact. watched another video where the state government got involved in asking why the freeway was still closed. as a truck driver, i mainly drive at night, i pass by so many accidents that the general public doesnt know, only because its cleaned up quickly - unless its fatal, then they have to do an investigation on scene

You got to have a lot of patience when doing this job for sure. Despite some of the bureaucracy going on, Alex kept his cool, and got the job done like the professional he is. Plus, he even impressed a lot of those guys, with that beautiful 75-ton wrecker named Flipper too. When the fire team leader said he was gonna call your boss and tell him what a dam good job you did, that put a smile on my face. And lastly, I absolutely love Flipper! 💓
