I was a DEA Special Agent assigned to Los Angeles in 1988-1991. I was assigned the “Colt Pattern 9mm Sub-machine Gun” with a 10” barrel. I had a light saddle with a three C cell Maglite mounted on it. We carried them around in a racket ball case. They had an aluminum tab mounted between the pistol grip and lower receiver that blocked the safe/fire switch from being fully rotated into the full automatic fire position. The tab was designed to be snapped off in an emergency so the weapon could be placed in full automatic fire mode. We would remove the aluminum tabs at the range so we could qualify with them in full auto, and then replace them. I never saw any of the integrally suppressed models. Fun times.
When I was in the National Guard in the late 2000s, we had those little aluminum lockout tabs for our M16s and M4s, for use during state duty deployments. I guess they didn't want us lighting up looters with burst. 🤷♂️
I was DEA from 1991 to 2010. I had one of the Colt SMGs until 20O5. Mine came with a huge light called a Sage Light that slid into a metal tube that locked onto the bayonet mount (with a ring that went over the barrel). I wish I had kept it, but by the late 90's we trash canned them all for the smaller Streamlights and Surefire lights. We always kept those little silver tabs safety blocking tabs in the gun case.We always figured we could put them back on when Inspections showed up. Then I figured out you could slide the sling under them and break them off. After that, my story was always, "Oh, no. I guess the sling got caught on the tab again." After a while, DEA mostly quit caring if they were even on there or not. I loved mine. I still remember the serial number HT002525.
When I was working for the FBOP; the SRT had M635s; one item that they added was a blast deflector made using M7 Bayonet parts and mounted like a bayonet and protected from the muzzle blast coming downward and hit you on your non-firing hand. Been trying to find that part with no luck.
Carried a 635 from 1996 to 2000 in SWAT. I remember when you accidently dropped those mags partially or fully loaded, all the rounds would spit out. We were using double clamp mags. They were fun to shoot.
FYI, the first run of H&R 9mm lowers where rollmarked, not laser. I also had to look at mine twice, because it is the cleanest rollmark I have ever seen, but if you compare next to a laser engraved lower it's obvious the letters are indented and there is some variation in depth. Mike has confirmed this online if you search through the forums.
So i have one of these in 10.5 with a maximum defense roller delay buffer and it tames the recoil amazingly! Now after mounting a carry handle mounted trijicon mro, putting a Surefire light and running 1k rounds of Winchester 115gr military over run m1152 through it it's now my new bed side gun
I dreamed of having a Colt 9mm smg on swat until we bought some used MP5s from our County swat team. Nope, fell in love and never looked back. Built a 9mm AR a couple of years ago, still fun.
My first agency issued us MP5s. Great gun in every way, except for the safety placement. It’s just so awkward trying to flip that thing on and off. I knew guys that would do raids with the safety already off for that reason. It always made me nervous.
20 or more years after the fact, the youngsters will always complain how bad the "Mark One" version of ANYTHING is. When it came out, it was better than having nothing at all. I carried an M16A1 during my time in the service. 55 Grains out of a 20" with triangular handguards and straight wall, slant bottom magazines. They kept improving as they went along.😊 The difference between an old piece of crap, and retro gold is your point of view.😉🪖
Seems to be the season of the AR-9! I just finished pitting together my first last month. I went with a KE Arms KE-9 upper, but chose to mate it with a Maxim Defense roller delayed buffer system. Couldn’t be happier.
Carried a 16 inch carbine in the 90’s when I was a dog handler, back when we thought pistol caliber carbines were the way of the future in law enforcement Half the price of a MP 5.
JP makes the best of both worlds. A roller delayed AR. Giving you superior recoil control of MP5 and the superior trigger choices and ergonomics and modularity of the AR platform.
What I ended up doing was tapping the gas tube hole with an 8/32 button cap bolt since the drilled hole tap size is so close and it works. I also drilled and tapped the bayonet lugs to run set screws on the front post sights to run any .750 diameter barrel. Since there is no gas tube to worry about.
@@FirstLast-ff7qx You can't go wrong with a Stribog, nice guns. Henry's complaints about the original Colt 635's are very valid. We had issues with pins breaking, also sometimes the 3-shot burst was a two shot, or, even if you got all 3 off, it would string upwards due to the heavier recoil over the MP-5. I never used the giggle switch for serious work, I kept it on semi-auto. I was (and still am) accountable for where every round hits. Back with the Colt 635 I was issued, mine had a red dot over the carry handle. Nobody does that anymore but it was all we had back in the 1990's.

I got to shoot a suppressed 635 at a law enforcement demo, and we had three regular ones (we just referred to them as Colt SMGs) in our SWAT team. They shot great and the suppressed version was extremely quiet.😊
I've got a SBR'd Colt 6951. Neat little gun, a bit quirky, really quite accurate with Fed 147gr HST at 100 yards. While it's not bad it isn't difficult to see why it got absolutely smoked by the MP5 on the military/LE market. I stopped the handguard/cap rotation issue by putting the cut off stub of a gas tube through the handguard cap into the front sight base (the 6951 front sight still has a hole to accommodate a gas tube like a standard AR.) Might consider getting a suppressor for it to at least make it somewhat relevant.
Have a genuine DOE upper with colt gray lower using a Maxim roller delay buffer system and it's awesome to shoot, shot it with a super safety before and it was surprisingly easy to keep on target in bursts even for someone inexperienced with uh, "high rate of fire" like me lol
I just finished my form 1 build of one and it’s awesome. When I got my form 1 back I got a KAK 9mm barrel for it and had a fsb put on it. The KAK barrel feeds better than the h&r barrel.
In the LE world, lots of SRT units used the Colt, because we couldnt afford the MP5. I never felt undergunned, but I only fired it in practice and quals
I built a pistol variant, using an original Colt 9mm SMG upper, NDS/Brownell's A1 lower (before it became H&R Arms), one-piece magwell adapter. SHoots as good as i remember it during my times as a Correctional Officer with the FBOP. H&R Arms provides a good option for the retro heads (like me) for building the iconic Colt M635 SMG.
Another great video, thanks for making it. I have a 1995 Colt Sporter Lightweight (R6430) in 9mm with a 10.5 in barrel (Switzerland does not have this SBR nonsense). I changed the A2 buttstock for a collapsible one, put an old Tasco ProPoint red dot on an ARMS M16 A1 A2 mount, and a B&T impulse II suppressor on it. It’s a looker, a hoot to shoot. And quite accurate at 50 meters.

Really glad PSA got H&R back on the board, love all the retro stuff, plus i actually grew up on original H&R shotguns and revolvers. The brand holds a very near and dear place in my heart, they put a ton of meat in the freezer over the years. I need to get to pick up another a1 carry handle upper.
Just bought a 6951 this summer, I was actually pleasantly surprised. The mag block roll pins appear have some locktite applied to them, there was no reciever wobble. And I bought an H+R 635 upper. Super happy all around!
Good video. As a Deputy assigned to courthouse duties, I had available to me a Colt 9MM semi-auto not very different from the H&R 635 except we didn't have the light-equipped handguards. It was a very reliable carbine but over time, as ammo technology changed, the agency replaced it with a 5.56 carbine. In my safe right now I have a 16" carbine that I assembled, differing only in that I've installed a magwell adapter for Glock magazines rather then Colt for the sake of interchangeability. I also have a 10" pistol version with a brace. Sometimes simple still works but I'll have to admit that I shoot my SP5 more often than either of the 9MM ARs. BTW, I still have one of those Surefire lighted handguards and mine also rotates a little bit. In the past I've installed a pin in the FSB's non-functional gas tube opening which generally works to stabilize the handguard cap and thereby the handguards also.
I worked for a security company in the early 10s that ran ARs configured much that way. Because at the time, MP5s were unicorns, and the things we guarded didn't react well to bullets. Especially rifle bullets.
Would love to see you guys review the new Mean Arms Bearing Delayed 9mm upper receiver, and compare it to an MP5. People are saying this is the MP5 killer.
I remember being surprised at the recoil of the first (blowback) 9mm PCC that I shot. I expected virtually nothing when compared to something like a 7.62x39. Nope.

I wonder what the LE agency price difference was between the Colt and H&K? Besides the obvious familiarity advantage the Colt would have among former military, a big difference in cost could be why the 635 was so popular.
I love H&R. They made my favorite machine gun. A marine Reising m50. I’ve also got an extra supressed barrrel made for it it, but I’m still too afraid to put it on out of concern for breaking a historical MG.
I carried a Colt 635 for a while on a SWAT team (we didn't too much cool real-world stuff, but did get to train a LOT which was fun). It had more muzzle rise than our M4s, but was still a cool gun. Oh, we tried out HK's offerings (I WANTED the HK53 SOOOO bad!) but we got the Colts for about 3 for 1 on price. Anyway our 635 ran with everything from Federal American Eagle ball to a stead diet of Federal 9BPLE (our primary 9mm ammo). I H-A-T-E-D having to turn that gun in. Anyway, it's bulkier than the MP5, but it works great and if you are familiar with the AR15 manual of arms you're basically ready to go. I SBRed a standard lower with adapter to do a DOE clone. Main reason over the H&R lower… if I wanted to convert to 5.56, I could. Bolt that came with the upper was garbage, where it would barely run. Ordered the H&R 10.5” and use the bolt between the two; flawless. I like the 10.5” better than DOE. Just feels better.
11:49 exactly. When spend all this extra money modding and tuning an AR when you can just grab an MP5. And I agree with Henry in regards to the carry handle as well.
Ive been wanting to make a radial delayed version of this. The bolt and barrel will fit, no issue. The Colt Mag CMMG lower works with the radial system now. All i need to to get an FSB pinned to the barrel, which shouldnt be too difficult.
It seems that CZ is directing Colt into making Fudd guns instead of vibe guns. What they really should be doing is making both Fudd guns and vibe guns and CZ guns in the Colt facility, including Vz 61 and CZ 97B.
My first time seeing the Colt SMG was on ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings reporting on their adoption by the DEA. He lamented on how much more violent the war on drugs was making the world. Meanwhile teenage me is like that's so cool confirming me as a future gun nut...
There was a time when DEA issued M635s to task force officers assigned to DEA. Back in the 90’s, believe it or not, DEA had as many Colt SMGs sitting on shelves as they had issued. Any agent who wanted one could get one. I think he total buy number was 2500 I remember right.
I lived through that era. The Colt 32 round 9mm mags are a PITA to fully load due to the bolt hold open tab. Give me an MP5 in spite of the Teutonic ergos.
My AR9 just went down hard at a training class on Sunday. I believe I had an out of battery discharge. The case split and the projectile and part of the cartridge case is stuck in the chamber. The primer end of the case exploed.
I made a pcc that’s a 4inch barrel with a law folder and insert that goes in the magwell. I’d love to see you guys shoot it vs what you have because I think it’s VERY flat.
As a full auto SMG I suspect these would run a lot better if they used a Colt LMG lower and and an open bolt to take advantage of advanced primer ignotion.

FBI in Collateral (2004) had literaly same setup Colt SMGs
In a Man Apart. The DEA agents were using M635s. One of the few movies that got that detail right.
11:49 exactly. When spend all this extra money modding and tuning an AR when you can just grab an MP5. And I agree with Henry in regards to the carry handle as well.
its got the vibes ❤
thanks for sharing
I get the impression Henry really likes the brass golden shower.
I really like the CMMG raidial delay blowback. It feels a lot like the MP5 just with AR controls.
Get a CMMG Radial 9mm barrel/bolt kit, shorten barrel, install 2lb triggertech trigger, and JP silent spring kit.
The unfortunate part of the VZ61 is they’d have to make it without the stock and then offer it separately due to our asinine laws.
My first time seeing the Colt SMG was on ABC World News Tonight with Peter Jennings reporting on their adoption by the DEA. He lamented on how much more violent the war on drugs was making the world. Meanwhile teenage me is like that's so cool confirming me as a future gun nut...
no mention of the b&t apc9 or spc9, both excellent 9mm pccs if youre looking at competition without needing to tune
I am looking forward to Henry's comparison of the HK CC9 and his Walter p99 as final version.
My aero precision EPC 9 mm 16 inch virus gun is my most favorite shooter I got
My uncle had one of these when he was in the Drug Enforcement task force at the sheriffs office
There was a time when DEA issued M635s to task force officers assigned to DEA. Back in the 90’s, believe it or not, DEA had as many Colt SMGs sitting on shelves as they had issued. Any agent who wanted one could get one. I think he total buy number was 2500 I remember right.
308a springs are still a thing people play around with in PCC:s 🙂
“That’s looks stupid”. Nah that’s one of the most gangster looking retro ARs
I lived through that era. The Colt 32 round 9mm mags are a PITA to fully load due to the bolt hold open tab. Give me an MP5 in spite of the Teutonic ergos.
OMG thankyou so much for this video..
The Buc-ee's drink Cup is 😁👌
It would be interesting to hear your take on the JP-5 (MP-5 guts with AR ergonomics).
Yeah I think that's the best of both worlds. Wainting for a 10mm version of that and then I'm getting one.
Springfield saint victor mags under thirty beans should work.
No carry handle equals half power loss. truer words have never been uttered.
It looks better than the glock mags in the generic AR9s.
My AR9 just went down hard at a training class on Sunday. I believe I had an out of battery discharge. The case split and the projectile and part of the cartridge case is stuck in the chamber. The primer end of the case exploed.
If PSA didn't own the H&R brand, I'd totally check these out. I'll never buy anything PSA made or owned ever again. My $.02...
I made a pcc that’s a 4inch barrel with a law folder and insert that goes in the magwell. I’d love to see you guys shoot it vs what you have because I think it’s VERY flat.
It was about muscle memory they can move straight from their AR-15s to a 9mm that wouldn't puncture walls for special law enforcement teams
As a full auto SMG I suspect these would run a lot better if they used a Colt LMG lower and and an open bolt to take advantage of advanced primer ignotion.
Henry's Waco comment at the end😂
Old School for me. Just looks the shit... IMO, looks WAY better than the glock mag PCCs...
I'd like to see a comparison of this and the current Colt 6951.
The ONLY reason it looks “LAME” is that 16” barrel! Otherwise, it’s a bad ass little blaster. Thumbs up for PSA/H&R!
Check price on Henry's favorite walther p99, hk vp9, hk cc9, price drop.

This video is very flavorful. :)
Still believing Josh has hyperactivity issues...haha.
I carried a Colt sub gun in the early 2000’s, I was a new guy and didn’t rate an MP5. We then switched to HK UMP 40’s. Everything’s cyclical…..
Looks cool to me.
