    Grumman LLV was built between 1987 and 1994. In Cleveland Ohio most have had numerous engines transmissions and rear axles. Most are on their 2nd frame. Some original frames are so rotted that they’re breaking in half. Our shop is welding patches in the rotted ones due to no more frame availability. We’ve been promised new vehicles for years now. No end in sight. It’s a mess.

      The Grumman LLV came out in about 1988, not long after I started to work for the U.S.P.S. in March of 1986. Our sorting facility/vehicle maintenance garage had a big unveiling ceremony at an employee picnic. I was struck by how much larger it was than the Jeep Dispatcher that it was replacing. Now that the LLV is totally obsolete, I'm thinking about buying one at a government surplus auction and building it for 24 Hours of LeMons racing. Hey, the LLV was built on a Chevy S-10 chassis, so finding a kit to stuff an SBC in one is a piece of cake! Talk about "Express Mail"!

    Steve as a retired Rural Carrier (33 years) i enjoyed this clip! Historically the Rural Craft provided their own vehicles to service their routes. USPS paid a vehicle allowance to the owner. I purchased an excessed American General Jeep (DJ 5?) for route use. I then upgraded to a brand new right-hand drive Jeep Cherokee ( interestingly it was the ONLY vehicle I ever made a profit on when I sold it!) Which I used until I was assigned a LLV.

    Great vid Steve,as a retired PO mechanic with 38 years in Motor vehicle service I can say the PO tried out quite a few different vehicles, horses, steam, electric, propane diesel, you name it, As Tony said,the LLV was produced from 1987 to 1994 and since then frames,drivetrains changed out to keep them on the route. In 1987 I drove a brand new LLV around the block in Boston and thought to myself this thing wont make it 5 years,Well I was way off ,haha Regards

    Back when I was a kid in the 1960's I grew up in the city for the most part and all the mail was delivered by mailmen on walking routes. They picked up their mail from those big olive green US Mail drop boxes you used to see every couple of blocks. The postal service used those big Metro vans to load those drop boxes back then and of course we had twice a day delivery then also.

Lol I also drove an old Metro step van for a business supply company delivering. It had a gas slant 4 banger, 3 speed manual on the floor. I remember that thing wouldn't go a lick over 47 mph, and first gear was super low, could only get about 4 mph, but it'd chirp a good 2nd, without too much grinding. Shhhhh...don't tell the boss!

The mechanic said that the Post Office had to pay extra to Ford to have the AC deleted off the vans as all the vans had it as standard equipment. I suppose it saved them money in the long run due to maintenance costs of the AC system.

    Hi Steve, great video on this International Mail truck. I always enjoyed the industrial service vehicles you have showcased here on the Crawl this one is no exception. I'm surprised that the unions allowed their workers to ride in non-AC vehicles. But I can't see it being nothing but a cool breeze blowing, at times. The door or window would always be open or about to be opened up to pass a package to the mailbox. Then onto the next and few 100ft away in most cases. The price of stamps will definitely go up once those AC vehicles are in service 💸 🤣 Have a blessed day everyone 🤙🏼 Namaste 🙏🏼

    • @googleusergp
      @googleusergp ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@chrisscearce Yes, they will raise the rates and on paper, it's the sale of those items that will generate the money. In theory, it's the "same pair of pants, different pocket". No, the LLV vehicles ran from 1987 to 1994. The first digit of a postal vehicle number is the year of the vehicle. Yes, they are going to be replaced. Some routes already use a RH Stellantis ProMaster vehicles and some Dodge Caravans had been purchased already. You Tuber "Monster Rust" has a AM General postal truck on his channel with the tag line, "You've Got Mail".
    The LLVs have a fatal design flaw in some cases in that the washer fluid lines run over a heat source and because washer fluid contains flammable ingredients, there have been a few fires. Yes, they have a GM powertrain and the chassis is a RHD GM S Series chassis. In the early years, it was a 2.5L and later ones were a 2.2L and both were four cylinder. The transmission is a THM180 three speed automatic. The replacement "Next Generation Delivery Vehicle" is a mix of products, many made by Oshkosh Defense and the ICE powered ones have a 2.0L Ford Ecoboost.
    My late uncle Andrew, aka "Andy the Postman" was a USPS carrier for many years in NYC and loved his job. Everyone knew him, and many people on his route would call him "Postino" which is "Mailman" in Italian, as his route had a lot of Italian people on it. He never joined a gym because he was always fit from all of the walking he did on his route. He was a postman for many years, retiring in 1985. He got the job several years after he was in the Navy during WWII. His wife, my aunt Elena who we called "Libby" was a school safety agent for the NYC Board of Education for about 25 years. There are a fair amount of civil servants in my family on both sides.
    No, the Forever stamp came out much later in 2007 and they were 41 cents when they first came out. They are sold at the prevailing first class postage rate and then that stamp is good forever. So, a stamp bought in 2007 at 41 cents can be used today to mail a letter.
    The Post Office is structured by certain rules, and uniform service is guaranteed by law. UPS and other carriers technically pay a fee to use postal roads, and they sometimes cannot deliver to certain addresses. I actually prefer USPS over other carriers. They do a good job given what they have to work with. Taxes do not fund the postal service, and revenue is gained from mostly the sale of stamps and other products/services.

      As a postal vehicle repair technician, I can tell you that almost every vehicle in the rust belt is not only on it's 6th or 7th engine... They are likely on their 10th or 11th transmission. But as rust generally does eat the steel parts, the frames are ALL rotted. They have replaced over the last 15 years almost 2/3rds of the frames with aftermarket square tube ones. The new generations of LLV, I believe, aren't going to last very long at all. I think their life span will ultimately be about 10-15 yrs and then they will need to be replaced again. Especially since we now live in a completely disposable society. We will see though. And as for the stop gap vehicles, they are Mercedes Benz metris vehicles. I've heard of some sections of the US using the Nissan NV200 as light duty vehicles. But, we do have promasters and other vehicles ranging all the way up to 11 ton dual rear wheel box trucks. And obviously tractor trailers as well.

    Thanks, Steve, and no A/C may make it easier to do the job? One doesn't get nested in the cabin and not want to get out and walk, something like that. I know I sometimes feel that way about breaks at work, you sit down and then, arg, it gets hard to get back to it. But that's just me and I still never use A/C in my car. Maybe a rental when nothing really matters, but not in my personal car when I want as little as possible to go wrong with it.

      Air conditioning doesn't do much when the door or window is always open, as it will be when delivering all those mail stops.

      @@tomkrisel4493 I'm okay either way with a work truck, each side has its merits. Just in general I think we Americans have demanded too much comfort and luxury from our motorized vehicles, for example, on these gorgeous spring mornings when it is slightly above or below perfect, I'll see cars and SUVs idling for like forever with the windows up and in bewilderment I wonder why, why not just enjoy some time in the cabin with windows up or down to suit. And O well, their call, their pursuit of comfort, just that I'd prefer not to run the engine like that.
