    This is wonderful information! I found this video and your TH-cam series in a search on Perplexity regarding increasing NO by humming on exhales through the nose. This is also a Traditional Buddhist breathing practice. I’m 70 and just learning all about this as I wean myself from decades of CPAP (1st step was significant weigh loss via TRE 6’1” 170 trying to stabilize at 165). QUESTION: can this technique help someone who had part of their thyroid removed due to thyroid cancer? Thanks?!

    Your vids have been so helpful to me I can't help but look forward to them. For real world reasons, a rock does ground us and props (for me), are so helpful. Another Feldenkrais practitioner (Taro Iwamoto in Everett) has a few vids interesting to me, on working with a staff or bamboo culm. Again, so wonderful (as a practice), to find and cherish a favored prop (to prop me up) in my practice on how to be kind to myself. I have lordosis and foraminal narrowing and osteophyte disease, as well as facets disease (in 6 cervical vertebrae), kind of crowding each other after 40 years of looking down at a massage table. So I appreciate your gentle solutions. This comment isn't really relative to this video (or no, I now see that I'm wrong again, so I better start humming),, however I think this is the right place to say thank you. I look forward to your offerings with anticipation.

    • @SensingVitality
      @SensingVitality  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello, a couple simple suggestions for snoring. One of my favorite hacks for snoring is from James Nestor in his book on Breath as well as Patrick McKeown in his books and videos use a simple piece of paper tape that helps close the lips to improve nose breathing, no wider than the width of your little finger (easy to cut lengthwise) and the length just long enough to go above and below the middle of your lips. You can still talk, drink from the sides of your mouth and breathe through the mouth but the little piece of tape encourages the lips to stay closed and to breathe through the nose. For removal: Be careful to use your tongue to wet the tape so not to tear the delicate skin above/below lips. Nose breathing improves overall breathing and reduces snoring. Of course diet-- anything you may get stuffed up eating or drinking (often dairy, yeasty things - breads, beer, red wine, sugars can cause snoring). The humming lessons here can be helpful-- check out my other breathing lessons on my playlist and the whale series on Patreon.

    Heya, I've been thinking that humming can help us in a lot of ways for a few years. I have pretty much chronic sinusitis to the point that weather changes give me massive headaches and of course I have horrid allergies. (well did, I worked on those by changing my emotional response to them. :) I woke up this morning wondering if any research has been done on humming and sinusitis and found that indeed, there has been. Mostly looking into the NO exchange in our sinuses from humming.. which is cool. Then I find your video which is also great. However, I was thinking that even just the vibrations from humming themselves would break up mucus, open passages etc. So, I've been playing with it. I have to say that the pitch AND the focus area of your humming both REALLY matter. Different pitches = different frequencies of vibration and my thinking is that different parts of our skull, neck, sinuses etc react differently to diff vibrations because of bone etc density. As for focus area, well, hum in your throat to clear your throat. Hum in your sinuses to clear your sinuses etc etc. I've noticed that I personally can only hum focused ON my sinuses in my cheeks IF I do it pretty high pitched.

    • @SensingVitality
      @SensingVitality  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Awesome that you are experimenting like this. I agree that it would be great to have some studies with this. It does seem obvious to me as well that just the vibration should be helpful with NO exchange, white blood cell circulation and opening the sinus areas. Common sense. And hopefully someone will do studies someday. I use more humming in my full series with Vital Breath on Patreon and also in some of my other series. Thanks for your input and hope you keep sharing more insights!

    • @SensingVitality
      @SensingVitality  4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This is the fourth time I've tried to write a reply and resending a new one. Here's my response: I find grief comes in waves and my body can be easily overstimulated with breathing and any mind/body practices during intense grief. Slow and gentle support with simple practices works best for me-- that I can witness my grief, allow the feelings and memories to surface and move out of the body. I try not overstimulate myself with strenuous exercises or mental stimulation. Placing my hand on my heart or other aching areas of the body is healing-- with gentle breathing, coming back to breathing through the nose-- with loving intentions to support my body to let go of the pain I've carried. Rest often and take breaks with nourishing activities if the grief is really strong. Hope that helps. Take care...

    Fascinating..but I feel the same vibrations when I talk or sing so why would humming be different? 🤔

    • @SensingVitality
      @SensingVitality  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's great you can feel those vibrations. I find humming accesses overtones/frequencies that vibrate the bones a bit differently, contains the sound more internally-- stimulating the nervous system in a different way. Perhaps you can play with it and see what is different about it for you. The Om chant helps one feel the effects of the various sounds including the hum sound. I have another short video about Om..

    • @SensingVitality
      @SensingVitality  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jack, Well, there's possibilities to check out. Do you have a sinus infection or particularly bad allergies at the moment? It's tough to clear a sinus infection quickly with these practices, but they do help even if you can work with one nostril at a time. There are other tools I have found that help with sinus obstruction-- diet, stress level, reducing thought intensity (overstimulation of nervous system ), rest, and in general boundaries-- sinus issues and allergy are a form of shutting down boundaries. So, creating some space for yourself-- literally breathing room can help for these breathing practices to have some effect. And this may take more time than one or two repetitions of this lesson (which is only a excerpt from my Patreon series with breathing). Practice consistently working with your boundaries with things that inflame your sinuses-- paying attention to that and how one's body quiets down afterward. This means the body doesn't need to inflame so much to get one's attention. That's my personal experience-- catching the inflammation or out of balance situation sooner... I've also found good results using some natural sinus sprays with Manuka honey or grapefruit seed extract (both have natural antibiotic effect). Take care-- I relate to your story. Hope you find healing. Annie

    • @jacklangley861
      @jacklangley861 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@SensingVitality Hi Annie, Thank you for taking the time to reply to my comment. I don't think at this point it's an infection. Tried so many remedies over the years. I also don't think it's allergies because it's 24-7 365 and is the same in all seasons. I suppose it could be a food allergy but I've tried eliminating dairy for a couple of months and gluten as well to no avail. I do believe at this point it may be psychosomatic. I've healed so much from Dr. Sarno's methods so I'm quite interested in the idea of boundries. I don't know if you are familiar with Dr. Sarno and TMS but this could be what he calls a symptom imperative. Now that brain and body have realized their is nothing physically wrong in my back and joints ect. It is starting up a new thing to distract me from my repressed emotions. So I like you suggestion. I will work on my boundaries and my possible lack of them. Thanks again for writing back to me.

      For humming, it's easier to hum with your mouth closed- and you can alternate back-and-forth with "Ah, oh--mmm" to improve your hum--that is basically what the Om chant is but the Hum is the mmm part of the Om chant

      Hi, No this is not normal. Sounds like it might be a sinus infection, but good to get this checked out by ENT Doctor. You may have chronic sinus infection that has not been addressed. Lots of avenues to pursue there to clear infection-- from diet, breathing practices to surgery to make more space in the sinuses- working with more nose breathing practices, Something simple to try is the Breathing Tape that Patrick McKeown recommends to improve nose breathing: at myotape.com/store/ this is helpful for anxiety, sleep and helps improve nose breathing and may in time help your sinuses.

      Manu, I hear your comment and agree that there has been cultural appropriation in many forms by many cultures. I offer my work here on TH-cam for self-healing practices that are effective and help people. I mean no disrespect to the Indian tradition which I'm aware has been working with Pranayama for thousands of years as well as other ancient traditions I have studied during my life. (I mention in my notes below the video that this lesson is adapted from Feldenkrais Method® and Pranayama.) I continue to study with my Sirilankan Ayurveda teacher for 11 years now. I am not sure exactly how I can teach this subject with greater respect than I have, but I can always improve and continue to learn from experience, my students and viewers' comments-- including yours. I deeply respect the depth of awareness within Ayurveda and the cultures that practice Ayurveda-- especially the rich culture of India, their spiritual traditions and Sanskrit language. I'm grateful for this profound practice of pranayama, Ayurveda and the wisdom of nature and hope to honor this wisdom in my work.

    Dear Annie, first bloody Mughals and then most useless community of GB destroyed Hindu's worship places, epics, culture, education system and now suffering excessively due to lost/destroyed Hindu's knowledge in Covid, which worked well now through very limited Aurvedic Experts now a day available in India. What the bloody humming is when you don't know Yoga/Pranayam. In Pranayam, Bhramri and Aum are two pranayam of which vibrations could be felt in brain as it removes fog from the brain in addition to everything you told in this video. English took us as wild/uncivilize, banners were displayed everywhere written thereon Indians and dogs not allowed. Special permits were issue for a few sycophants by them for sitting on chair in offices. Now these buggers will be destroyed by the community they relied most as they are now overpowering them. Their off springs are now least hard working and entire country is dependents on outsiders. Really shame on them as they never apologized publicly for misdeeds of their ancestors. They must follow them religiously The Japanese's who had been publicly apologizing for comfort women. Forget your shallow knowledge and follow INDIANS AND THEIR OLD CULTURE.

      Dear Kapoor Family, I hear the anger, pain and sadness in your post. I feel sad for the loss of the many indigenous cultures/traditions including within Hindu countries and the field of Ayurveda. I have studied with an Ayurvedic teacher for a long time who comes from seven generations of Ayurveda practitioners and I am familiar with the stories you mention and am humbled by the depth of knowledge within the Indian culture, and within the Sanskrit language itself. I'm sorry if you feel I don't respect the Ayurvedic and Hindu traditions enough in my work or that my work has offended you. This excerpt is just a short part of a longer lesson and does not go into the full teachings of Pranayam-- which I am not trying to teach since it is such a deep and extensive cultural practice.
