  • We all knew it would eventually come to this. One of the greatest and most fascinating martial arts frauds of all time, the cough inspiration behind the classic movie Bloodsport, Frank Dux!
There's stolen valor, delusions of grandeur, and more! And I couldn't even fit all the stuff in this video, like his tales of fighting Filipino pirates. Nonetheless, enjoy.

Man screw Frank Dux. I broke into 14 Japanese families houses hoping to learn how to be a ninja.
Unless being a convicted felon counts, I am not a ninja.
I would like to apologize to my local Japanese community. It was the 80s, I expected a different outcome.
    Thanks a lot Frank!!!

This individual has brought SHAME to OUR Armed Forces, he's not only a liar but a "con artist" as well, he fooled everyone at that time. He forgot that if You tell a lie, in the long run the truth will be known. He's mental issues for sure and he lost orientation in time, space, place and person. I wonder if he knows that claiming to have won the "Congresional Medal Of Honor" is qualified as "Stolen Valor" and it's a Federal Offense punishable by a fine, jail time in some cases and prison time, it can be one or both. At least the movie was excellent,(in my personal opinion), and gave Van Damme some good money and much deserve recognition that later dux wanted a part of it but it didn't happened. I think that Van Damme would kick dux behind out of our planet. If he ever worked with the "Central Inteligence Agency" he should know that he can't even mention it, not in the past, present or future. It's expected that You remain silent and don't ever mentioned in Your life because You don't want to give classified operational details to the public. He's basically in the same category of fraudulent Martial Artist as steven segal. Msybe they both belong to "Agents of Shield" or The Avengers".😀😁😂😂😂😂😂😂.

Frank Dux is almost certainly the greatest martial arts fraud of all time. I’ll cite a # of examples:
    1. He never served in Viet Nam; he enlisted after the war was over.
    2. He was never deployed overseas-ever.
    3. He received no specialized training-ever.
    4. Dux would have us believe that the Government bypassed all the US special forces in order to send him, at 19, on secret missions, I guess due to his Ninja training.
    5. He was never awarded the Medal of Honor, or any other medals, as per his official military records.
    6. There’s a picture of him wearing the Army Medal of Honor. Dux, in fact, served just over four months active duty in the Marine Corps., not the Army. He claimed the military never explained why.
    7. The FBI actually wanted the US Attorney to charge ‘The Secret Man’ with wearing fake military medals, which is against the US Code.
    8. He was, however, referred to a therapist for expressing ‘flighty & disconnected’ ideas. BINGO.
    9. He never fought in the Kumite.
    10. In fact, the Kumite never even happened in the Bahamas, according to the Minister of Sports.
    11. The video of him ‘fighting’ in the Kumite was actually a French martial artist named Philippe Cadoret, competing in Taiwan, in 1986.
    12. Mr. Cadoret’s son contacted Dux and threatened a lawsuit, unless he immediately removed the videos, which he did.
    13. He claimed to have sold the sword, which he won at the Kumite, in order to rescue a boatload of children, who had been abducted by pirates. Yes, he actually said this!
    14. The International Fighting Arts Association, which allegedly sponsored the Kumite, listed Dux’ home address as its international HQ.
    15. His Kumite trophy was purchased at a local CA store.
    16. No, Dux is not a Ninja.
    17. Two friends, Richard Robinson and another, whom Dux asked to lie about having fought in the Kumite, subsequently admitted lying for him and having fabricated the entire story.
    18. He bilked hundreds, possibly thousands, of students out of their hard - earned money. NOT OK.
    19. He never worked for the CIA, either directly or indirectly.
    20. He claimed to have been personally recruited by the CIA Director, William Casey, in a bathroom. Yes, he actually said this.
    21. The CIA actually publicly called his BS out, which is rare for them to do.
    22. His stories continually change; lies beget lies.
    23. Dux has NO background in intelligence. Zip.
    24. He claimed to have been gouged by a bayonet in the stomach on one such mission.
    25. He claimed to have been recruited to assassinate Steven Segal.
    26. His instructor never existed. He got the name Tiger Tanaka form a James Bond movie ‘You Only Live Twice’.
    27. Zane Frazier, a legitimate MMA fighter and a real martial artist, body slammed Dux over a dispute regarding money.
    28. Dux sued both Jean Claude Van Damn and the LA Times for liable - both unsuccefully.
    29. Dux now wears dark glasses and the right side of his mouth droops. I feel he probably suffered a stroke. For this, I truly feel sorry for him.
    30. FRAUD & LIAR.

i like the movie Bloodsport, it was huge for it's time, though while it was Van Damme's first major breakout role, i do feel Kickboxer is a much better produced movie. you can tell even Van Damme at the time seem to enjoy the role more, with Bloodsport i think he was just happy he finally got something big. even today Kickboxer aged much better than Bloodsport thanks in large part for exposing Muay Thai to a mainstream audience. but even as a 9 year old kid who watched it in theatres with my parents, i had doubts about the story. although they did cover the Frank Dux story in one of there issues, they were only willing to put what he claimed, but that's the problem with journalism sometimes, and magazines that cover martial arts is journalism, but the people at the top aren't necessarily experts in Martial Arts either, but they covered it thanks to Bruce Lee popularizing it in the west. so they saw it as a way to make money, that's what it always comes back to. but here's the thing, there were lots of Martial Arts magazines, Blackbelt was the most popular and mainstream, but most people who read it didn't buy every story that was included because they would feature lots of famous names. but there were other magazines that covered Martial Arts and they would not put an article about someone, unless they competed legitimately and had proof. now there's no denying the names that were included were actual Blackbelts, but being a Blackbelt doesn't necessarily make you a fighter unless you have competed somewhere, and back in the mid 60's 70's and early 80's we had American Kickboxing, and the World Karate Championships. the Karate Kid put a spotlight on that, because the point style Karate tournaments did exist, but Kickboxing was in the ring.
however what Frank Dux claimed was something else, something more illegal underground.
now if there was some truth to the story, there would be alot more witnesses, but since he's the only one it definitely looks suspicious.
that being said, us as men we do have that competitive side of us that likes to prove themselves against another person. not to kill them, but more like a test of skill, if you think about it UFC is kinda what people always wanted. the early days of MMA gave rise to what is now known today as UFC, but i think it goes back further to the days of Boxing and American Kickboxing here. Boxing was the more popular of the two, but Boxing and Martial Arts played a role. im gonna say the Frank Dux thing is BS, but it's possible illegal fighting can go on, however i highly doubt it would be anything the movie claims there were over 300 fighters, and Frank Dux won 50 by knockout, that's where the story becomes questonable. because those 50 people would have say something about the experience. something that would be illegally done, the only thing i can think of would be street fighting. the movie Lionheart is more of a take on street fighting , but there known to get caught and shut down. even in China and Japan, they don't allow illegal fighting, so if somebody gets something shady going on is bound to get caught.

I've spoken over email with both Frank Dux and Ashida Kim, and of the two, at least Mr. Dux is capable of carrying on a reasonable conversation about martial arts. Mr. Dux, from what we know, did indeed earn a recognized black belt at some point in his life, and if we can be honest, most modern arts are only a generation or two old. I find it reassuring that thanks to the new media we have through the Internet, such fanciful stories will no longer find much fertile ground to grow in and we will be forced to have our childish ideas about the martial arts "grow up".

    • @LarsenHalleck
      @LarsenHalleck  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Like I say in the video, I never dispute that Dux has had martial arts training. Count Dante did too. But both of them furiously jacked off with these BS superhero stories rather than just tell the truth, and that's the issue.

    • @Jim-Tuner
      @Jim-Tuner 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

The history of Frank Dux in the martial arts is mostly a blank before 1980 or so. Nobody knows who trained him or where he was recognized as a black belt (if he was ever recognized as one). Frank Dux is more knowledgeable and more articulate than most of the guys who founded "ninja dojos" in LA in the early 1980s. But what his background is and where he picked up what he knows is anyone's guess.

He for sure wasn't trained by any Japanese Ninja named Tanaka . Even though i don't like him , Steven Seagal has a far more credible martial arts backround compared to Dux . Having learned in Japan , and having it documented . Dux is a mystery because most of it was probably learned in California combined with years of research in books on subjects .

Regarding the word Shidoshi, I’ve rarely heard it outside of a few Stephen K Hayes books.
The only other time I’ve heard it was from the 1987 TMNT cartoon to describe Splinter
Apparently "shidoshi" as used by Mr. Hatsumi is an invented word and uses different characters than one might expect
Far as I recall, they are the SHI/samurai (samurai), DOU/michi (roads/path), and SHI (instructor/teacher).
Although I do not have any information on Mr. Hatsumi's motives when he invented the word, it could have been the result of his love of puns and other wordplay.

When I was young and naive, even more so than now, I read "The Secrer Man". And yes, as expected from a young naive teen's perspective, his book was an action movie wet dream. Especially the aspect of living a double life, and doing off the grid operative missions. Funny thing is, some aspects of the book would almost be feasible, if he had of humbled his ego.
Anyway, I'm glad people put him on blast, calling out the lies. However, if people pay him too much attention, it's only going to give him the attention he's desperately craving. Sometimes negative attention can benefit a person as well. I would concentrate on stressing the importance of, how his lies could lead to a students demise, rather than thriving on, bashing his over the top fairy-tales.

In the early- to mid-90s I was introduced to Bloodsport on Saturday afternoon showings on local TV (I miss that sweet time before weekend TV was taken over by infomercials), and even at less than ten years of age I had already come to know that "based on a true story" still gave Hollywood a LOT of room to exaggerate. As such I just shrugged off the "fact captions" at the end of the film and assumed that the movie, as entertaining as it was, was really amped up. Then about 2000 I saw an interview with Dux and I realized that it wasn't Hollywood that was exaggerating.
