Awesome - I have an s22 and just discovered it shoots 10 bit and 4k. Who knew. Anyway, I plan to play with it more and compare footage to my DLSR. I've heard that the Samsung Expert RAW is not really RAW but baked with AI formulated sharpening, etc. So this may be a great alternative. Just wondering if you have also tried recording in a log or flat profile and how you would do that.
Thank you so much! Finally, someone is telling me not to to use Expert Raw :) I ve been trying to explain why Expert Raw is not actually Raw. I hate the oversharpened, unrealistic look of it. Maybe good for daily use and good for people who are not good with technology :) I used the log also flat profile with prores format, which is only available for Motioncam Pro. I tried color grading with Davinci, and it looks identical to Raw recording and it is easier to handle, edit etc. I am mostly explaining the Raw video workflow bc it is available to everyone included with the free version.

I ask you because I see that there is an option to export the dng individually. But I can't figure out how to put it together in frames, I don't know if I'm explaining myself well.
No worries, all good. I think I understand what you meant. I am using the Motioncam desktop version callee "Motioncam Tools."" You can also do the same thing in the app too, but the computer is faster than the phone and easier to manage files. The only thing to know is the free version of the app and desktop software has limitations. I use the pro version which is only available by purchase.

@@kitchenraw I'm also using the pro version with everything it's entitled to, however, I'm not able to record timelapse in high resolution. When I go to watch the video, it is in low quality. Would there be a correct configuration for high quality recording? Thanks in advance.
@user-ch3iy7wm9f I never tried using timelapse with Motioncam app, I normally use the regular timelapse mode on my Samsung. If you would like to record a raw video, I can help you answer questions about that, but I have no idea how timelapse feature works in this app.
@user-ch3iy7wm9f For Motioncam's Raw Video recording, you need to select "RAW VIDEO" at the bottom first. After recording the video, it will show you the preview in low res format bc they are not a video yet. They are single individual frames. To be able to see the full res video, you need to export it as a video. You can also use the "Motioncam Tools" app from their website to create a video from Raw footage. There are lots of tutorials about how you work on those files on TH-cam. It sounds complicated, but it is not when you start learning. I have a black magic cinema camera that takes raw images just like this app, and the process is almost the same.
When you are recording raw video with the Motioncam app, it actually shows you how much space your video gets instantly on the top of your screen. The app is free btw, you can download and test it ;)
Honestly, I don't know, but the developers of Motioncam will definitely answer your questions on their Discord account. Here, how you can reach to them: discord.com/invite/motioncam-raw-video-980884979955421255

Interesting. I use Galaxy s23 Ultra, I just checked again after your comment if I am able to record 60fps or not. I can record 60fps, no problem. Test video I just did was with the main camera, I didn't have time checking all cameras on 60fps tho.

s21 ultra is block to 10bit 30fps? No hdr 12bits like dng photo? No 60fps? pff motionCam does not have lossy dng for reducing file size at recording? only after recording?
These are the opposite of RAW. But between the two it depend on the processing power of your computer or if you want to save storage space. HVEC is a high-quality codec design to save space and reduce file size. The negative is that it take a lot of processing power to decode, which shouldn't be an issue with a modern mid-tier or above computer. H-264 is the legacy codec, a predecessro to HVEC.
Yes. It is normal if you like to get cinema grade footage 10/12 bit. Normally, when you record raw with cinema camera's like Black Magic, Sony or Red, you will have the same processing time and procedure with huge file size.
None, I didn't use any color space transform, and no luts, no nodes. It is shot in RAW Dng, converted to h265 Master. Just played with saturation, levels adjustment, level stretch for color bitrate testing, that's all

good info. but i read some reviews from other sources that motion cam while recording, has issues with dropped frames. it's completely unacceptable if it happens even once... :-) that's not what professional videography is about.
Exactly, I agree with you %100. App also glitches, freezes sometimes or not working at all for some phones. I contacted the app developers via their Discord account about the problems. App Developers told me that they are trying to improve the app constantly and there is a stability problem between phone models. I respected their effort bc it is a small team of individual developers. They also mentioned that some phones drops frame in certain settings, but another model is working without problem with same settings. I think you need to play around with your settings (frame rates, bit rates, etc) and find which one works the best. S22 and probably s23 series can even record 12bit raw. They won't advertise bc video files are huge, like 1 minute raw video takes 15 to 20gbyte of space. They aren't efficient for regular users.

I did more tests this morning compared to 400mb to 1200 mb, and the difference is very small; a person needs to zoom in and nitpick to see the difference, so I would say 400 mb is the max at which it shows a good jump from 230 mb, so I suggest a person stick to 400mb. directlog

@kitchenraw I haven't done any grading testing yet, but I'll get to it. I only started testing because I was wondering if it was really worth it to have the OG quality raw offers. I wanted to have high quality without the big size downgrade other than dropping resolution. I couldn't find a fix because raw doesn't allow the person to change the bitrate, so I thought, Why not try DirectLog? and that offers as low of a bitrate as 230 MB using 4K and maxes in the low 1000 MB.

I’m currently rehousing a cellphones internals with its 1” sensor and turning it into a box style cinema camera using MotionCam. Tilt screen and a custom USB adapter for I/O - audio and HDMI output.
My next project might be rehousing a broken iPhone 14 in the same way for the Blackmagic camera app.
These projects sound amazing. My brother also makes 3D printed medium format cameras, and that's really fun. I really like innovative imaging alternatives. Are you on any platform like Instagram or TH-cam? I would love to see your stuff.
The quality is insane! Have you already done any tests recording in Direct Log, in ProRes, testing the time capacity without dropping frames on the S23u?
Yeah, right! Everyone should talk about this, haha. Yes, I tried the log profile and rendered it as ProRes. This is an old video btw, now I use Galaxy s24 U, but I've never tested the longevity. My longest video I recorded was 3 minutes long in a concert without having a single dropped frame. I think it mostly relies on the processor, cpu, and ram.
@@kitchenraw Thanks for responding. I would like to have more information about the S24, what do you tell me about the experience with it together with the motioncam, is it as good as the S23 ultra? I ask because I'm thinking about purchasing one.
@user-pf8fw8cz5d Mine works without any problem with Motioncam, I haven't tested in detail, but all cameras are able to capture 24 to 30fps raw captures. Motioncam developers have a Discord account. You can go and ask every detail about the app, updates, and compatibility. They've been really responsive and helpful. Here is the link for their Discort: discord.com/invite/motioncam-raw-video-980884979955421255
How to u upload in cinematic crop in youtube channel bcz i used same options like u but when i upload video it was getting full screen....i used 2:39:1...
@@maxgyroyt9407 Interesting, can you send me theblink of the YT video you mentioned?
Brother good night, a query you render the video within the moment application as well? Or with another external program? I ask you because I see that there is an option to export the dng individually. But I can't figure out how to put it together in frames, I don't know if I'm explaining myself well.
No worries, all good. I think I understand what you meant. I am using the Motioncam desktop version callee "Motioncam Tools."" You can also do the same thing in the app too, but the computer is faster than the phone and easier to manage files. The only thing to know is the free version of the app and desktop software has limitations. I use the pro version which is only available by purchase.
In 5 or 10 years we know phone cam will be even better so better results with motioncam, the quality will keep getting better with the app since cams in phone will keep upgrading
you already know motioncam results will keep getting better since phone cams will keep upgrading.
Since motion has been out, newer phones have come out that show a difference from an earlier series model. S25 is coming that will be sharper and clearer than S24,S24 is sharper and clearer than S22 and S20,The model I have s20fe is less sharper and less clear than S22-24. Just imagine how much more detail the S40-50 will have using a monster program like Motioncam. I'm glad to witness history.
To me motion when compared to stock or any other phone cam app looks like dslr quality compared to a phone cam
song name please. So you suggest the s22 and not the s23 with this app?
S22 and s23 have almost similar set up so they would result almost same.
This is ... A discovery man !!! 10bit raw footage from a phone is unbelievable !! Does it work with an S20 ?
Yes, it is insane! And I am really curious why no is talking about this, right? It should work with most of the phones with a camera that can capture raw images. Videos are taking too much space in your phone also. I used to be able to record with Note 20 Ultra before never tried s20. You can download the free version to your s20 and try it first. 😉
Did you record in this weird aspect ratio? Or crop in post
Good question! It is not a weird aspect ratio :) The app comes with 4:3, 16:9, 1.85:1, 2.39:1, 2.76:1 aspect ratios, which are international standards. So, no. I didn't crop it in the post. I tried different aspect ratios when I was testing the app, so it might change from scene to secene.

@@kitchenraw I would like. Thanks.

@@kitchenraw thanks friend! 👍
Did you use an ND?
No, but that is a good idea!
Does motion cam work on all the lenses ?
For Samsung Galaxy in general, yes, but I think it also depends on the brand.
Apparently Samsung have limited it so third party apps can't shoot 50-60fps. Do you know any work around for this? The highest frame rate I can get in MotionCam is 30fps, whether HD or UHD. Ugh! Was hoping it'd make a nice b-cam for slow mo shit. Any ideas?!
Interesting. I use Galaxy s23 Ultra, I just checked again after your comment if I am able to record 60fps or not. I can record 60fps, no problem. Test video I just did was with the main camera, I didn't have time checking all cameras on 60fps tho.

No hdr 12bits like dng photo? No 60fps? pff
motionCam does not have lossy dng for reducing file size at recording? only after recording?
264? or hvec?
When I render I use, h264 or h265
These are the opposite of RAW. But between the two it depend on the processing power of your computer or if you want to save storage space. HVEC is a high-quality codec design to save space and reduce file size. The negative is that it take a lot of processing power to decode, which shouldn't be an issue with a modern mid-tier or above computer. H-264 is the legacy codec, a predecessro to HVEC.
It's magic of post production on davinci resolve or Adobe premium pro
It's more like "magic of tge high bitrate raw video." I used Davinci Resolve, but you can do it in Premiere, or any other video editing app too.
motion cam take more space and it take lot of processing time
Yes. It is normal if you like to get cinema grade footage 10/12 bit. Normally, when you record raw with cinema camera's like Black Magic, Sony or Red, you will have the same processing time and procedure with huge file size.
@@kitchenraw hummmmmmmmmmm
what cst options did you choose?
None, I didn't use any color space transform, and no luts, no nodes. It is shot in RAW Dng, converted to h265 Master. Just played with saturation, levels adjustment, level stretch for color bitrate testing, that's all
When you're exporting: ProRes is better than DNG? Or even Cineform? Which one is the best in your opinion?
It is almost no difference between raw dng and prores. But dng gives you more flexibility when color grading.

I am also curious if the paid pro version of this app has the same glitches and dropping frames? That wouldn't be cool for the paid version honestly.

Well my mind is made up, I'm sticking with Samsung and not buying the iPhone 15 pro and I'm going to try this out!! Thanks for the video!
@ColinHuijser Yeah, apple is the king of marketing, and they are favored in general bc they are American. Btw, motioncam has this app maybe more than 4 years now. It is not new. There is no marketing team, and the app is just made by 2 humble, nice developer dudes. I am lucky to have had a chance to chat with them on Discord. @@ColinHuijserthere’s a reason Blackmagic stopped using raw with DNG and switched to Blackmagic raw. This type of raw is noisy and generates huge file sizes.
