  • I was a guest at Guro Brandon Ricketts' Metro Manila class and after sparring with his students, he was kind enough to ask if I wanted to play. In Metro Manila in 2021 -- that is a gift that should be accepted. Especially when your host comes from a lineage like this • Overview of Kali Ilust... I had a level 2 displacement of my right shoulder earlier this year - so I had to use my non-dominant hand.
It was our first time meeting. So this is polite, friendly, and technical sparring. The goal is to not be cut and get in clean cuts - everything was a target except the head. There is lot more intermediate play in this match compared to most. Instead of just sharing footage, I thought why not use it as an opportunity for folks to test out their eyes and ears.
Meeting Brandon made me very happy to see a lot of the distinctions of measure, timing, baiting, that I THINK ARE CRITICAL parts of the KI body of knowledge alive and used with great skill by both Guro Brandon and even confidently by his students during sparring. These were students who had only been with him for less than a year on that day.
Guro Brandon is one of the sons of the late GM Christopher "Topher" Ricketts. He is the current head instructor of the Ricketts lineage of Kalis Ilustrisimo. I am a swordsman who focuses on both HEMA and FMA, who is a Kalis Ilustrisimo practitioner and for the last 5 years, a student Romeo Macapagal.

Cool video, excellent accuracy. One of my students is trying out training with Mr Ricketts online. Looks very different from Doce Pares & WEKAF style sparring, to me.
