Intonation on your U bass is way off. Many Ubasses (mine incl) played very flat as they came from the factory. Hope this improves Thanks for your efforts SD
Hi, In this video I play a fretless ubass so if the intonation is off (and it probably is here and there) it's because of me and not really the UBass ;-) With a fretted though it is hard to get the intonation right because of the ultra short scale length so it is a ungoing "battle" to get the strings and instruments to be better and better!
Hi Magnus! Great video! You're very good player, stellar sounds!! Your tips was really instructive to me. I have a spruce myself, recently acquired. Could you tell me what string did you used on the spruce Ubass? Flatwound? I use the synthetic rubber and I'm considering the Flatwound. Have they more definition on this Ubass? p.s.: I use a piezo pickup. Thanks for the video!
Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad you found my video useful! You’re fright, I use flatwounds on the spruce UBass! They do have some more definition. There are also round wound options and a new copper string from Aquila, Flat Spirals. I have made some videos that showcase their sound. You can soon see these videos on the Kala website I hope. They are a serious option if you want great tone and a feel that is a bit more like a regular electric bass string. A bit more tension compared to the rubber strings! Good luck with you UBass playing and string hunt!
Hi Roy, I use mainly my old spruce top fretless UBass. It’s the original model (bought back in 2010) w/o a built in preamp. In the Summertime excerpt I use my Kala California UBass. These are sadly a discontinued model but are similar to the higher end Kala Ubasses like for example the striped ebony models.
Agreed! I have only used a couple of “random” positions for the contact mics and could possibly find better places that gained a little better and warm/transparent sound. I will continue my search! :) However the main purpose for the use of a contact mic on a ubass is the fact that I want to pick up those percussive parts played on the top of the ubass. Using only contact mics is also a bit impractical since you really have to pay lots of attention to your playing technique so you won’t end up picking up more noise than actual notes! :) I will probably to follow up blog posts and videos on this subject as the “tone quest” continues! Thanks for watching Sean!
Most interesting. Thanks, Magnus
Thanks!
Hi Magnus! Thanks for your contribution to the U Bass community. Would you mind to share your recording techniques for the U Bass. Thanks!
Thanks! I have thought about making some kind of recording guide. I’ll try to put tigger some tips and share on my blog and TH-cam-channel!
I was always wondering if i could do this. thanks magnus
Using contact mics? Or are you referring to something else?
@@bassMAGics yes the mics. Thanks
@@Osckii Ok, you’re welcome! Thanks for watching!

Hello, what specific model is this ubass? Thanks

what strings are you using at 12 minutes?
It’s the Galli Flatwounds!
Did you like that tone?
E and A sound great but D and G sound a bit reedy to me.
