Juna.. I have one of these and it is a very cool sound under certain circumstances. They are great for Funk actually and also for adding base into some Neo ethnic grooves as well. Thanks for putting this up it's nice to see something current from you. Glad to be your fan and wishing you well everyday
It's good to see Juna playing a Kala bass! I've been playing two Kala basses for the last six years--one hollow-body and one solid, both fretless--and have been very happy with both of them. The best thing about the solid body is it hardly varies under different conditions of heat and humidity. The band I play in is outdoors six months of the year, and I can trust that the tuning will not have to be checked every ten minutes. It also only weighs about 5 lbs., so a two-hour session is no strain on my back or neck. These Kalas are my go-to gig basses.
Amazing as always! I like that the neck shows where frets would be... Very CoooL. Also, I have been watching you for a long, long time... your English is so good! Better than some people I know that were born and raised with it. Thank you for all you do, Juna! I thoroughly enjoy all of it!
Yeah for the tuning, it's that those rubber strings have a LOT of friction with the nut, and they're also so short and low tension so there's not a ton of force to overcome that friction. But as you say, lifting the string up makes the tension change that was "stuck above the nut" spread out across the string again. Guitars with freshly changed strings have this problem a lot, as well as those with (non-locking) whammy systems. Hence why people put everything from graphite (pencil lead) to special slidey powders in the nut slots to try to have the strings slide as freely as possible - but not sure if that stuff would work for a U-bass with the much thicker strings
Awesome video! I loved learning about an instrument I hadn't heard of. Also I'm very excited to hear your recording new songs. Hopefully that that means a new album too! 🙏
Use a pencil and put a little graphite in the grooves the strings sit in. This will help them to overcome the friction in these spots. This also works for your new violin (on the bridge and the nut - the piece of wood the strings ride over to get to the pegs) and any other string instruments. Yes, pulling the string sideways is commonly used when you loosen the string because of the friction at the nut. I have no experience with rubber strings but I know that new strings on violins and violas will take a week or more to stretch out when placed on an instrument before they will hold a tune. I imagine that rubber strings would be worse as it seems to me that rubber would have more stretch to it and would take longer to take a set. I haven't heard of pushing the strings up towards the pegs before but then again, those are rubber strings and it does seem like they would want to stick more at the nut and would stretch between the peg and the nut and need more force to overcome the friction (I know nut probably isn't what it is called on a guitar but I'm used to it being called that on violins and violas).
I know the video is a year old but still…I will be the first to simp out to say I could only focus on the beautiful blouse and those bangs my dear lol Elephant tin the room time…if you know, you know…Please wear more like that Juna. Absolutely love your playing and stage presence (especially with Jazz Avengers) and your English is getting better and better. Looking forward to seeing more of you as the youtube algorithm does its thing.
Congrats on your U-Bass! It definitely takes time for the strings to stretch before they stay in tune. I really like the model that you got (the fretless Ebony Kala). I have an ukulele that matches it well. Cheers!
You are an amazing bass player I enjoy your bass playing very much I can't wait to hear what you do with that ukulele I'm sure it will be kick ass and we'll see some smokes.
Nice. It has a weird but oddly addictive sound halfway between a double bass and something like a Spanish acoustic bass or a bass balalaika. I know you will make beautiful music with it.
Try some talcum or baby powder on the strings at the nut end. And even on your hands and it tune easier and be easier to play. Learned that on an old Asbury bass years ago. That funky thing you did was, well , funky. Love it.
Hello I just saw your video and I don't know why I saw it? It seems to me that when I saw the word bass I stopped and I found a bass ukulele interesting. I think it's called that? You were fabulous Waooo I am instead learning the electric bass, I would like to play like you and I see that you play other instruments true well in the end it was nice to see your video
Sounds great, I never had any idea a ukulele bass was a thing! Have you a dedicated room for playing now? It looks like you in a sauna 😂, no more playing violin in the car!!!

Love following Juna's explorations. She has a groove all of her own. American English is pretty much spot on. Very cool.
Sounds lovely! Gotta love those strings and sound.

Juna is absolutely adorable demonstrating that cute ukelele bass.💋
She is a beautiful woman. Don't let the accent or appearance distract she is one of the more brilliant musical minds of our time. I learn every time.

your love of music inspires me, you swim in the sea of the muse.....you are the best, please never stop
I have a pineapple shaped Ukelele from Kala, but I had no idea they also had bass ukelele. That's awesome!

Juna did not understand is true. And if it's true tell me what do I have to do?
Violin strings also take several days for the pitch to become stable.

Sounds really cool! What kind of setup would you use it in? I sometimes hear that the sound can be too soft for playing in a group
