    Cicero is an idiot, but he's not an idiot due to poor writing like a lot of Skyrim characters. He's not supposed to be this intelligent military strategist or cunning villain, he's just a madman who lost everything. Cicero is a rare example of an actually compelling and entertaining Skyrim character, and for that we all love him.

    Cicero while mad was also the most loyal to the Brotherhood out of anyone. He followed the tenets to the letter, and never strayed from them. Given the situation the Brotherhood found itself in anyone would have found themselves going mad or more likely abandoning the Brotherhood. But he didn't abandon it he carried on doing his duty to the night mother and staying true to the tenets until the end. In a way Cicero is one of the more tragic characters in the series. Loyal to Sithis and yet touched by Sheogorath I'm amazed Cicero is as stable as he is considering that.

    Cicero was right to attack Astrid because Astrid dishonoured the night mother and broke the 5 tenets 1 2 & 3 so as keeper he has every right to attack Astrid. Tenet I. Never dishonor the Night Mother. Which she did by insulting her. Tenet II. Never betray the Dark Brotherhood or its secrets. Which she did to maro. Tenet III. From a psychological stand point, I would say that Cicero is actually very intelligent. The way he "went mad" says a lot about how his mind works and his outward actions back this up.
    One of my biggest beefs with the rest of the Dark Brotherhood members is the same beef I have with the real world.
    Cicero is not mad.
    His journals tell us that he was alone for 8 years, in the dark, waiting for a sign that it was safe to leave and ultimately hoping that all of his patients hadn't been for not. He watched his adopted family be torn apart, casualties of being in-between a drug war and the Listener's deadly daddy issues.
    Cicero is a master manipulator. That's his game. That's one of the reasons he was such a stellar assassin. He also seems to prefer jobs that require him to put on an act. He reminisces about fooling the grand champion, but reveals that, under stress, a quick in and out job became quite the hassle.
    In Elder Scrolls: Legends, his card calls him "the betrayer" (something like that), not implying that he was the traitor in the DB quest line, but rather describing his speciality. I'd imagine that being able to decipher people so easily is one of the reasons he has no problem killing people. To him, they're predictable and thus boring, like an old toy.
    After being taken out of the field was probably devastating to the Cicero he had been, and so he needed to adapt to the dramatic change in his life. His last contract was the jester as we all know, but the way the jester laughed in death was surprising and new. He stuck with Cicero for this reason and after the rest of the family had left one way or another, the jester that danced in the back of his mind became one of the last things Cicero remembered about the world outside, before the sanctuary fell. Just as the jester found joy in death, Cicero too sought out joy in his own. This was actually his brain protecting him. With his will being incredibly strong, he would not bail out, and because of his mind's ability to sustain itself through his vivid imagination (a trait also found in intelligent people), he didn't resort to suicide, which would have been the only other likely escape.
    Cicero didn't become the jester. He became his own jester. He became what he perceived the jester to be and cultivated a part of himself that he had never really focused on before. He's still Cicero, and sometimes you can see/hear the original Cicero come out to play.
    My conclusion is that Cicero is smart, very smart. Now yes, he has done dumb things, but as I like to say, "Smart people are just a special kind of dumb". Smart or not, ones emotions aren't any easier to control.(thank you Astrid the harlot)
    I'd also like to write a prescription for him to continue being around his new Dark Siblings. That's it. Other than his homicidal tendencies, I'd say there's nothing wrong with him really. He just needs time for his brain to realize that it's alright to leave the safety of La La Land.
    He's not alone anymore.

    • @thesmolbean488
      @thesmolbean488 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Was looking for a comment like this. I couldn’t agree more, he’s smart as hell. Pre-jester Cicero was cautious and calculating, and that didn’t really change, he only became mad. And like you said, sometimes the original Cicero comes out, it’s just kinda hard to catch.

    • @ZTRCTGuy
      @ZTRCTGuy ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Finally someone said it. Cicero might be the least ''mad'' madman. Everything he does is for a reason, unlike sheogorath who does seemingly random things. Cicero becomes/is extremely erratic, homocidal, sadistic... but not mad. He doesn't see things that aren't there, he doesn't do things for no reason. Just because he's loud, erratic and likes to dance around doesn't make him mad.

    It kind of makes sense for Cicero to be so conspicuous when he's moving across skyrim. On top of that Cicero is actually rather smart in some ways. He kept the night mother safe on his lonesome for a long time, he survived when others perished, he managed to reclaim a sanctuary in a land he had never been on his own, he could see how Astrid was ruining the brotherhood when no one else could even before going there which is why he initially avoided joining them he sets traps and tricks arnbijorn and the player into believing hes mortally wounded. It always amuses me how his relationship to the Night Mother isn't parasocial or one-sided, and she expresses regret that Cicero is not the Listener. Yeah, he's insane, but she feels the same way he does, and it weirdly grounds him in reality in a way very unlike him, and contributing a lot to his mysterious and insane impressions

    Problem is Cicero is not an idiot at all considering he is along with you (depending of your choices) the actual only true member of the Dark Brotherhood. Others are quite bunch of murderers leads by an opportunist murderer. He is true one, even not murdering by being the keeper he respects all tenets (except one I come in it later) when Astrid broke all of them. He litteraly saved the Brotherhood by keeping safe night mother making her able to choose you as Listener.
    Also if you summon the Spectral Ghost of Lucien Lachance during the quest given by Astrid to murder Cicero, Lucien will say that he is agree to kill him if you wish but feeling the void, Sithis himself, seems to not wish it at all.
    Remember that we talk about Lucien who ordered you in Oblivion to kill all your teammates not regarding if they were loyal or not just to find one snake who actually wasn't even inside the sanctuary. And here he is the first saying it is not a good idea at all.
    Even more, (and here we finally come back in the tenets break) Cicero actually just broke one tenets by attempting to murder a sister and even claiming that he would do it again. Punishment for this should be the Wrath of Sithis and instead of that Sithis actually don't want him dead or even punished.
    That saying long on Cicero importance and also saying long about how Astrid is disregard to being a Brotherhood sister by the Void itself.

Bandits wouldn't be an issue also because we can clearly see that he is dangerously smart and skilled at killing. I don't think a few untrained bandits could really do anything against him. The thing that makes him an idiot is how he sings about brutal murder in public and says things like "LeTs KiLl SoMeOnE" right in front of guards.

    Bandits aren't gonna bother him, cuz he doesn't have anything, clearly, unless they wanna steal a corpse, and any that try to just kill him, would find him a very skilled fighter and quickly think better of it.
    Sure most people he meet aren't gonna like him, but he doesn't need them to. He has money, so he can pay for inns and food, and few places will turn away a paying customer because they're a bit weird.
    And he could easilly get quite a bit of sympathy from most if he needed help, and played up a story of 'on my way to bury my mother at x spot that she really loved'

If she had done this, most likely he would have never went crazy and everything in the dark brotherhood story would have played-out with a sane Cicero at the helm. Besides Astrid and her husband, everyone seemed to be on board with going back to the old ways. He could have easily convinced them and done so with a more calculating mind. Not have jumped Astrid immediately. Especially after she betrays them, he would have sealed the deal, Can you just imagine meeting this guy as a sane listener? There's a difference between idiocy and madness and Cicero clearly is much more the latter of the two. While Astrid ends up violating every single tenant of the Brotherhood and ignoring century's worth of precedent effectively turning the Brotherhood into nothing more than a two-bit imitation of what it once was, Cicero sees the wisdom in the old ways that kept the Brotherhood going for so long and fully upholds all the tenants. There's a reason those tenants stayed around for so long and Astrid showed tremendous hubris in ignoring them and substituting her own judgement. If you have the spectral assassin with you when you go to confront Cicero in Dawnstar he makes it very clear that Sithis does not want Cicero killed. Ultimately Astrid faces the wrath of Sithis but Sithis is firmly on Cicero's side.

Surely he is very weird and clearly a psycopath, but he was always faithful to his purpose (serving the night mother) which has lead the the Dark Brotherhood to be revived, also, he remained alive whereas all his comrades was slain and he was carrying the Night Mother's coffing the whole time, which surely prevented him of being anything but discreet. If anything he is a genious because all of his actions led to the revival of the Brothehood, him keeping his position as the keeper (if the Dragonborn lets him live), finding a new listener (which is something he so very much desires, even voices it), and "cleansing" the last sanctuary (Astrid dies in the end) so the Brotherhood could start anew, and with the "old ways" embedded on their etiquette.

    If you paid attention to the journals and the game itself, you'd know he was really amazing at his job. He was and is one of the best assassins who ever lived.
    Even in madness, he was an exceptionally skilled fighter, considering he managed to attack and wound a master assassin in the very heart of their hideout, in the presence of several other master assassins and fairly effortlessly escape, then went toe to toe with a rampaging werewolf, wound him and get away.
    He faced the Listener and put up a pretty damn good fight with heavy bloodloss and (what sounded like) half his guts hanging out.

    Maybe the reason he never hid the Night Mother's coffin in plain sight was a way to possibly bait patrols or disgusted onlookers into a fight. To give him an opportunity to kill again, without directly disobeying the tenants by passing it off as "self defense" or the like. It would also explain the persona he adopted after his last kill. Maybe being what could be considered as an annoying jester might also spark ire from an irritated sellsword/adventurer.

    Edit
    I don't think travelling like he did attracted much attention. Some bandits likely presumed that he was a poor performer who had nothing of value. Most performance artists, etc would be barely making a living.
    And if he was attached it's not like he was unable to fight back.
    And what's a guard going to do? Check the wagon, find a corpse just as the 'jester' said... No contraband, etc. And skyrim itself is in a problem times so they are looking for storm cloaks and weapon smuggling.

    ah yes the Dark Brotherhood.....if Bethesda could actually tell a story this could have been great as it is though its a half thought. The listener never took contracts either they were upper management, that is, they passed on the contracts given to them by the Night Mother to the other members of the sanctuary. This story could have been slightly better if you had to actually rebuild the Dark Brotherhood after its destruction by recruiting new members up to 4 new leaders (cant remember what they were called) so now you have the 4 fingers and the thumb (thanks Lucian) and then you recruit new members for your sanctuary with Nazim's and Babett's help up to x members (i like 5 for this), then randomly while you are out and about the night mother tells you about a contract and you go back to tell Nazim and/or Babett and they tell the "lackeys" (up to the number of "lackeys" you have at a time)
