Here in NZ, back in the 80s, just about every dirt bike was street legal, (save for full MX bikes like RM's and CR's etc) I had IT Yamahas, first a 175 then a 490 and they were fully street legal. Although the 490 was a bit much for the street😆. My first bike at 15 (you could get your license at 15 then) was an 81 XR200R the first of the prolink models, and that had no switch gear save for a kill switch, the horn was one of those rubber bulb squeeze ones, and full knobblies and that was street legal 🤣🤣 Fun times, but then the health & safety nanny state stepped in and ruined it.
Owner and I can't totally agree. I used to think the DRZ was a fantastic single bike to have, Until i had to cover miles on motorways (highways) they suck sat at 70-80mph. I too had to do a top end rebuild on mine and most do eventuality from everyone I know with one. Still love the thing tho! 🙂👍
A drz and sportster are two great things. The sporty can go long distance while the drz can go offroad and fun. I need a third bike to...just have, maybe a 250cc sportbike, lol
Just finished fixing up my old TS50X for my niece, and after zipping around on an island for about a month I came across a DRZ400 SM with low mileage, at a fair asking price. I am itching to place a bid 😬
You should really pick one up when you get the chance, I do trail riding on a 400E, and as a beginner rider who's only been riding for a little over 3 or 4 months, it's a blast and I love it. I never really liked motorcycles until I hopped on a Z400, I can't speak for the SM and S models, but I'd assume they're just as fun. And for a bike on the heavier side, it's pretty nimble for what it is. But it does kinda suck if you're short, I'm 5'9-5'10 and I have a hard time flat footing it, which can make it tricky on uneven terrain etc. but you can definetly still ride it regardless.
I think having a DRZ would be a Lot of fun. It would be fun just getting off the Big Bikes and having some fun Riding a Smaller nimble Bike you could take anywhere. Thanks for the Video and the Words of Wisdom Sean.👍👍

I've had mine 2 year now from new, you will want more power soon enough, if you are happy working on your own bike to get more out of it it's the perfect bike, but if you aren't comfortable doing it yourself I'd look at something more powerful stock, the Sm is pretty dismal on power stock but it's not hard to get it going strong

Decided to keep just one bike. In the end, it came down to my beloved cbr11xx or my drzsm. The drz sits here still. I miss my sport bike, but in these mountains, the sm reigns supreme. Course it doesnt do for sh*t in grass and dirt with the rain tires. Solution: spare set of rims on knobbies with rotors and sprocket. Got it just right to not even have to bust the chain. My sm is my 'street legal dirtbike'. I miss my xr200 deeply too.
I’ve never been on a DRZ but while I love off-road capability and the looks of the DRZ, I go higher speeds too often for it to seem practical. I really want one despite that but it’s hard to keep multiple bikes while living at an apartment.
@@ericweber1969 I know it’s capable of those speeds, but if I were to use the bike as a commuter, as I do with my KLR 650, it would be an uncomfortable 40 minutes there and back. That would explain the crazy pricing for a 15 year old bike like that. It is a collector's item. ;)

This is one of my favorite bikes. God bless you brother. 😎
Ive got a 2018 sm with dirt tires love it..God bless
I have to agree, I have been looking at this for ages and one day I will eventually get one.
Just bought a Venom kpx250 and it's, so far, my favorite bike that I've ever owned. It's a 20hp bike that took me off the black top for the first time on two wheels and I can ride it to work. 84 miles per gallon with a 3 gallon tank! Definitely the best option for a do all machine.
I used to have a XR650l jetted and everything but the DRz is something I've always wanted and can't wait to pick mine up on Friday and start modding it
Dump the clutch, bring the bike to 12~11 clock, quickly shift to 3rd gear, there you have a perfect wheelie! This work on my LTZ400, so it'll definitely work on the DRZ400!👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻
I have a 2001 DRZ450E Yoshimura. I have 86,000 miles, including the 2007 Las Vegas 300 and the 2007 Baja 500, and many other District 36 races. I also have a 2005 DRZ400S, which I converted to a SM. They are amazing bikes. I have many others bikes, Including a 2007 KTM 950 SE, but nothing is more fun then my DRZ. My other bikes are a 2001 RM250, 2005 RM250Z, and a Banshee.
Just got back into riding after 30 years...got me a 2021 DRZ400SM...and nice to see you quoting Holy scripture...Praise God!!!
Quoting scripture whilst breaking the law.... smh
Blows my mind to come across this on youtube this is my old bike 110% i bought it will 1k miles on it traded it in with just over 4k on it loved that thing hated to see it go
Wish i could add a picture to the comment i could prove it , good to see it got to be enjoyed after i parted with it

I just bought an 04 drz-400s with 7,000k miles for 1,200!! From triumph Daytona to drz! I have two amazing bikes now I agree with the video, great work!
Wow what an amazing price! a DRZ where I'm from would be about 3-4k CAD
@@10sPerfect right!? I paid 2300 usd for a 3 spot trailer and the 04 drz. So I like to think I paid 1100 for the trailer and 1200 for the bike either way it was a great deal it’s now my daily commuter bike!
In Australia we have the DRZ400E as a road registrable bike. It doesn’t have the SM wheels or upside down forks, however, it’s a higher compression motor. If you convert it to an SM, mate, the things unstoppable!
I ride dirt bike on road nz they dont carr
Owner and I can't totally agree. I used to think the DRZ was a fantastic single bike to have, Until i had to cover miles on motorways (highways) they suck sat at 70-80mph. I too had to do a top end rebuild on mine and most do eventuality from everyone I know with one. Still love the thing tho! 🙂👍
Does need a 6th gear though!
Thomas Renfrow I know. My 80’s YZs had 6. Why didn’t they put one in this one?
@@joelalexander5338 I think it is the fact they had a DR series that had the 6 gears but i still dont see why they wont add another gear.
What for? :D it has so much torque you just need 3rd gear all day long :D

Super motos aren’t met to do 100 mph they are ment to do like 70

A drz and sportster are two great things. The sporty can go long distance while the drz can go offroad and fun. I need a third bike to...just have, maybe a 250cc sportbike, lol
I have had two drz400e which I converted to supermoto over the years. I miss my last one but I just couldn't justify having two bikes and the car.
Just finished fixing up my old TS50X for my niece, and after zipping around on an island for about a month I came across a DRZ400 SM with low mileage, at a fair asking price. I am itching to place a bid 😬
This is my favorite motorcycle. Never ridden it. But it speaks to me.
Like mine a lot. Has about all the big engine mods that you want or need. Really good power for the size
I think having a DRZ would be a Lot of fun. It would be fun just getting off the Big Bikes and having some fun Riding a Smaller nimble Bike you could take anywhere. Thanks for the Video and the Words of Wisdom Sean.👍👍
Got one it's so god dam fun i really really wish it had a 6th gear but hey i got a R6 and a 03 GSXR 1000 and this DRZ is just so dam much fun !!! I love this for town and bringing with camping and stuff or just putting around !!! God what a great bike
Is this a new type of engine? Single V2? V2 Single?

Man that makes me miss my old E model, I want an SM so bad!
im so happy yall put this out, I love the SM's, I'm looking at getting one soon!
I just bought a brand new drz400sm here in Chicago. I love it.
@Mad Max nice man when u gettin it? I just meet up with the dudes from Chicago United tons of supermotos and sport bikes.
Aye bro , where did you buy it? I’m from Chicago as well . I’m trying to decide on wether I should get a sports bike or a super moto lol trying to see if I should find a used one for a decent price .

Hey bro, just wanted to give a shout-out for dropping that verse, man 👍. Much love and thanks for the bike review
I have the money to buy this thing, and I'm so ready for this. My 250 was stolen, I'm ready to get back on the road and upgrade!!!
"Now when I think of fun.." ..rides past graveyard
I’ve never been on a DRZ but while I love off-road capability and the looks of the DRZ, I go higher speeds too often for it to seem practical. I really want one despite that but it’s hard to keep multiple bikes while living at an apartment.
The bike is capable of 90+ mph, how fast do you need to go? If you want one, get it. Life’s too short for regrets, man.
@@ericweber1969 I know it’s capable of those speeds, but if I were to use the bike as a commuter, as I do with my KLR 650, it would be an uncomfortable 40 minutes there and back. Just bought a versys as a commuter because riding the KLR to work is annoying lmao. It vibrates a ton an anything over 45 mph and I don’t doubt the DRZ would be somewhat similar
@@ihate_5x108 this actual bike was my main commuter for a year or better, vibrations were little to none , though at higher speeds it started to get a little floaty best i ever got out of it was 104 on a flat
Crazy to come across this after all this time to see a review of my actual old bike, it got sent to auction when i traded it in then to see this video pop up kinda blows my mind
I believe you. My cousin has 6 or 8 street legal bikes including a couple gsxrs, a Hayabusa, and a HD but he says he enjoys his drz sm more than all of them on these twisty WV roads. I'm going to have to find one too.
I haven't ridden this bike yet but I freaking love this bike.
ive owned one forever just sold mine about 2 months ago its defantly worth having one in your inventory. IT is dated and carbed but thats part of the reason it CANNOT be killed just keep simple maintenance up on it and it truely will keep on going like that energizer battery commercial.
@@TheEvilPaperbag I bought a crf250l. Just because EU. Best bike I've owned.
The “E” was not for electric, it was a designation for the strictly dirt version of this bike. The E was not street legal and had some tweaks that gave more performance for the dirt.
Except here in AUS! Love my 400E on and off road!
Correct! E stands for Enduro, not Electric.
I have a few plated and insured motorcycles to choose from and I seem to always choose my DRZ SM. I just wish the seat wasn’t so darn uncomfortable. I haven’t upgraded much and the seat is definitely next on the list. I’d recommend this bike to anyone who is looking for an everything goes kinda bike
