I think I have finally figured out why these videos grab me so much. You talk normal, at a normal volume and pace. Which is rare these days, its usually about being the most obnoxious. You are just laidback and nice, makes me feel like I am there with ya working on this.
I will be the first to say in almost all cars I've heard Straight piped im not a fan but man these 5 cylinder engines need to be heard with a straight pipe I 100% approve of the straight pipe on these T5s!
"I found an old drain pipe that made my Volvo sound like a V10" would be a more accurate title by the looks of it lol :D Glad youtube recommended me this.
It's refreshing to see someone working on a car and putting on what they can afford and not spending tens of thousands and fancy parts right off the bat
Personal Opinion - the V70R is one of the best looking Estates/Wagons ever made. It's simple elegance that cannot be mistaken for something else, and that's what makes it look so good.
The Volvo B5 sounds so good with a straightpipe, the sound is so addictive. The Delrin bushings make the steering SO much sharper too, I absoluetly LOVED mine. I miss mine so much, I had an 04 V70 T5 manual with the B5234T, bunch of work done on it, drove the shit out of it for 12 years, sold it and it's still running today. I highly recommend getting a proper 3" downpipe, deres the IPD pipe and keep the rear muffler, I had up a muffler delete for mine that I would run sometimes as well for pure straight pipe goodness. For some reason mine was a magnet for trucks wanting to race, had some good laughs that's for sure.
Your video series restoring this $1,500 V70R has convinced me to not sell my $3,500 S60R and to go all-in on it instead. It needs complete 4C overhaul, brake rotors/pads, DEM, etc. But after watching you do all that you've done and still love these, I gotta admire that passion and I'll give it a shot with my own project. Thanks man and keep it up!
Not sure how I got to this video as I’m not subscribed but this makes me miss my 2004 S60R . I used to make my buddy cry in his M3 whenever we lined up .
Ever since we started our 850R project on our channel, your videos popped into the algorithm! It’s awesome to see people still passionate about these older 5 cylinder cars! Love your content and the car sounds great! Keep it up dude!
not sure if it's a common issue but Its fairly cheap and easy to prevent, but at high milage and less than great maintenance the o rings inside the oil pan start to fail and you will have no oil pressure. consider doing that if you haven't already before the car leaves you stranded lol ask me how I found out. but yeah great series and great car!
It seems the algorithm gods have shined their light upon you my dude. This is the first video of yours that I've seen, but what a great project. I love 5 cylinders!
As a V70 lover, I think it’s mega that you’re going through with this build. V70R sound is amazing! Even the D5 with a straight pipe sounds like a V10.
@@davidr8309 i had 2 tuned identical s60r m66. Both could hit above 180mph. Nothing more fun to drive than an R, they're just one of the most expensive cars do daily
Built my exhaust in my garage and it don’t look fantastic, but I dig it. Especially for being able to make an ST sound decent. Rad video dude. Looks like you’re putting a lot of hard work into a car you appreciate, and that’s awesome.
My friend, you've just earned a new subscriber. Damn, the edit, the car, hands down one of the best content by a mile. Keep up the great work and loving this sick wagon ♥️
Man I miss wrenching on my car! You sure know your way around cars. It sounds like a beast! Thank you for keeping it real, because a lot of people feel they need to be loud and flashy to grab your attention. You are chill and mellow. It is a breath of fresh air!
Nice work on the rear sway bar! I have an 04 XC70 and upgraded to a stock R one but didn't want to remove the exhaust (East Coast rust problems) and it was a bit more of a battle BUT you nailed it with loosening the lower shock bolts for a bit of extra clearance, that's what got me home free as well! I agree, the sound is more mild than expected with the cat back straight pipe. Now I have the itch to put a fresh metal blade in the sawzall and help my muffler leave the chat 😅
Love and miss that sound. Had a 06' VR. Couldn't do a 3-point turn to save its life but it's definitely the most fun, roomiest and comfortable car I owned. These cars are a labor of love, so it's awesome you have the facility and ability to work on it. Mad respect.
I had a '96 850 T5-R 5 spd, with a straight pipe exhaust back in 2001. It was my, now i have a kid/family vehicle. I loved that big yellow, bonnet lifting monster.
honestly I always forget to comment but since you've started building this awesome volvo I never skip 1 second of the video you just keep me entertained I don't know how looking forward on the exterior restoration Keep it up!!!
Still remember the sound of my old V70 T5 20 years ago. 434 ar the wheels and 3" allt the way. The sound was incredible! Best sounding engine ever Went Bimmer later on.
As a former S60R owner this is super cool to see. I had some IPD goodies and tune on mine and these motors can really rip. Eletrical gremlins ended up making me sell it.
Great info... I have a 2003 V70T RWD. I've owned it since 06/2006, 145K miles. It's a fantastic car. I hope to get 5 more years. The maintenance is essential. I did much of the work until I found a Mechanic a few years back, but I've always changed the oil and transmission flush myself.
this video is so chill, that music just underlines the absolute clean chill vibe of what it is like to customise your own car - with a proper exhaust system this Volvo could sound like a fucking domesticated beast, waiting for its reigns to be pulled signaling it to just ROAR
I am so stoked on this build I recently found your page and this gives me a lot of motivation with my car and this one sounds insane can't wait for the next segment
I just bought a 2007 S60R, in silver, fully loaded with the M66 manual for $2,300 yesterday. It’s been fun binge watching this series. Mine has a straight pipe and I think I am going to either replace it with an IPD setup, or just install a muffler in the straight pipe. It sounds good but I don’t think I can live with it as is.

Hey!!$ just found this channel! I have a 97 850R in red, I so desperately was wanting someone to make TH-cam videos about Volvos and your videos are perfect, boutta watch from the begging!
I have been daily driving my 04 v70r for the past 12 years. It is up to 228k, and there still isn't another newer car I'd rather own. The only thing I wish I'd held out for, when looking at these, was a manual. Those are kind of unicorns. Owned a 855T wagon before with close to 270k when I sold it. 5 cylinder Volvo's are some of the best sounding small engines out there.
I loved this car as a kid, and I still get weak in the knees when I see a yellow one with the dark grey wheels here in Europe. But I have enough money swallowing projects to keep me insane, so happy to just watch the video.
Only one tiny bit of advice I’d give. When you’re tapping/smacking/hammering a stuck bolt like you did from the exhaust flange. Put the nut back on first, then turn it onto the thread several times. That way you won’t flatten the thread on the bolt.👍🏼
Man I miss my VR 😔. Rocking an S60R M66 right now and I’m about to put the Snabb catless pipe on. Super excited especially after this vid. Love the content jeep it up man!
Very cool...loving this series. I'm a SAAB guy but I'm down to my last 9-3 and figure I'll investigate Volvos when this one heads to Valhalla. This V70R looks awesome.
Dude, I’ve always wanted one of these, they are so cool. I feel like it’s almost a modern take on the c4 Audi s6 avant- with the 20V turbo, or Volvos take on the b5 s4 avant. The latter or of the two I have owned and sadly sold it, still do have one but miss the avant badly. This video has made me want to look for a V70R now though, haha. Great videos, and look forward to seeing what you have in store for this thing in the future
If you think it is too loud, switch the resonator over to the straight pipe, not only is it similar to a glass pack which will quiet it down, but it will also get rid of the drone. Duuude that sounds insane even on video! I used to have a v70 2.4t, the big rear muffler rusted off it one time and the car was so loud when it was missing I can't imagine how loud your car is irl when its straight piped like that lol There's something about that 5 cylinder sound Also, very nice beats!
The reason it sounds nice and isn't as loud as you may have thought, is that even thought it's fairly loud at idle (compared to before), the turbo as it spools fast under load, acts similarly to a muffler in some ways, as the blades chop up the sound waves. Having straight-pipes a Volvo V70R myself, it is still louder than the police like (at least in Europe) though. I did get pulled over and had to remove the straight-pipe in the end.
Love this build so much. Thanks for the tip on identifying Japanifolds, found out my '01 V70 T5 already has one! I just got all the parts to do a valved exhaust on mine :) Straight pipe to stock exhaust with the press of a button
Hope on hilton tuning, get a stage 1 tune you'll love the work you've done, the sound will change and get even more aggressive but still just as pleasing
Hell yea bruther!!! Finally got into the turbo swap on my V70 and have not removed the angle gear. I think I’m an idiot for not doing it at the start but oh well 🙃
Don't forget the turbo muffles a fair bit of the noise coming out of the exhaust as well. That does sound good btw, a 5 cylinder has a sound all it's own 👍
