  • Just discovered how to ripen all of our green tomatoes off the vine. We planted our tomato plants a little too late and they never got a good chance to ripen but this method worked fast! All you need is a brown paper bag and a banana and you're set.

    Nice video Mike. I have lots of green tomatoes and gonna try this. I suspect the banana idea might be one of those, put WD-40 on for arthritis :) Bananas ripen quickly so of course it will help tomatoes ripen? You know the old story about mom cutting the end off a ham because it makes it taste better only to find out that Grandma did it because her pan was too small.

      @@MikeKincaid79 Hi Mike., I watched the video and you told that story great. I think I got it from the book, "7 habits of highly successful people". Many years ago so I may be wrong, and it may have been the oven not the pan :) I also saw someone put apples in with green tomatoes. Does it really help or just bring in more fruit flies?

    • @pricklypear7516

      Bananas emit the harmless gas ethylene that facilitates ripening of immature produce. Apples do too, but to a lesser extent. Rotate the banana/apple out every few days and use it rather than letting it go to waste.

      I'm not sure of the variety. My wife and I picked them up from a nursery way back in early spring and have long since lost track of the tags. If I can remember, I'll let you know. They sure are good though with a lot of flesh and not too much juice so they hold up nicely to chopping.

      Sometimes, overwatering right before harvest will cause fruits to swell and split.

    • @ottawadrone5914
      @ottawadrone5914 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mindy, after harvesting my tomatoes I noticed most were full of cracks, I thought it was the type of tomato at first. The are ok but not nice and round like apples or Mike's tomatoes. I compared my nice ones to the bad ones and it appears as though dirt settled on the top of them over time (around the stem) and this caused them to grow around the dirt so to speak. I do not know if this is the reason (did not research this) but my tomatoes closer to the ground were worse. The ones on the ground were really bad also. I also noticed the young ones were perfect. Next year I will spray the tops of the tomatoes once in a while during development perhaps it will make a difference? I did landscaping and garden work near my tomatoes and I stirred up a lot of dust and dirt this summer.

    • @parrotsandmore7446
      @parrotsandmore7446 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@ottawadrone5914 I think it might be the type of tomato! Last year I grew heirloom tomatoes and they all had cracks and were miss shaped. This year I took seeds from the vine ripe tomatoes at the grocery store, and they are all perfectly round with no cracks. There are 6 tomatoes per vine, but what IS weird is that after the 6 tomatoes are pollinated the fruit vine continues and makes a sucker on the end with more flowers?!? I don’t know if I should cut them off or leave them to see what happens? Usually the suckers grow in the v of the plant not on the actual fruit vine

    • @ottawadrone5914
      @ottawadrone5914 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@parrotsandmore7446 Thanks parrot for your input. You may very be right as I do not have much experience as of yet growing tomatoes. The young ones I had close to the top of the vine were perfect. It was only when they got bigger did they crack. Next year I'm giong to try and different type and see if there is a difference.

    Do the tomatoes taste like bananas?

  • @MrDavid-gg2kk
    @MrDavid-gg2kk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Anyone know the science behind this - is it the moisture from the banana mixed with the lack of light and air?

    • @MikeKincaid79
      @MikeKincaid79  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The banana gives off a gas called ethylene and this gas helps the other fruit to ripen.

  • @ruralsquirrel5158
    @ruralsquirrel5158 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    They always say to put an apple with your bananas to make bananas ripen faster. I wonder if putting an apple with the tomatoes will do the same trick.

      Apples and bananas are both high ethylene producers and ethylene causes ethylene sensitive fruits such as tomatoes and strawberries to ripen. Good if you are trying to ripen tomatoes, bad if they are already ripe and you are trying to save them.
