- You don't need a greenhouse. You need this plastic greenhouse-like tote instead. People are always comparing their success to mine and saying that the reason they are struggling is because they don't have a greenhouse. I want to dispel that myth right now. My structure is a cold frame, not a greenhouse. It's left open on both ends year round, and all the plants freeze hard as a rock inside during the winter. These plastic containers make perfect little greenhouses, they are diy, there's nothing to build, no tools required, and if you use them correctly, you can propagate many different cuttings in them all year. These little plastic totes are perfect greenhouse alternatives.

My greenhouse is just a cold frame now. I haven't had the heat on in years. The trees have grown so much it is now in shade most of the day. It was so exhausting taking the tropicals in and out every year. This year I went on a citrus craze so I will have to do it all again - lights, heat, lugging in and out. oy, the work we create for ourselves lol

Ive always had more problems in my green houses than outside except with tropicals! Cold frames are better than most green houses cause most greenhouses have no ventilation which is how mine was until i busted two big holes in each end and bam all my plants started getting air flow and blew up in healthiness and growth! I just use my green house for seed starting and overwintering young bananas and mangos and passionfruit and advacados!
Yes, they can have problems and bring unwanted pests. That's one thing that's kept me from building one. The hoop house is a such a great structure for all around growing. Maybe we need a video about that.
Hey Mike, Your so right. Put plastic on our Hoop house last fall. Sides dont roll up. Ends are open. In summer,its extra storage. I recommend a shade house for starting cuttings over a Hoop house. Ours is underway,misting system ect. Come late fall,all goes back in covered hoop house for winter. We have so many plants now after just over 3 years following you. Been planting out 19 days straight. Running out of room. 😊
Yes. For intermittent mist, an open and airy shade house is much better.
I have a modified version of a shade cloth hoop house. I have plastic only on roof halfway down sides under shadecloth to minimize rain. Circulation is key...from my experience.
@@DJDOUBLE077 Thanks Ellwood. In hindsight I wish I'd done that too. Thought the shade cloth would keep it cooler. It's 70% but she heats well over 100. Even with both ends open the air flow is minimal. Using a rigged up shade area outside now,until I get another one up. Going to put plastic under the cloth,and appreciate the tip.

But Mike you have a greenhouse, 🤣😂🤣😂🤣just kidding, I do have greenhouses, but I only use them in the winter to keep my plants warm. That did not go so good last winter when the temps got down into the single digits, only a few things made it, so a greenhouse is not always the answer, even if you have heat and do everything right. Left you a comment on the house build. Hope you have time to read. I tell about our experience with spray foam insulation. We love it . Expensive in the front, but what you save on Electric cost is less. But you are probably not worried about an electric bill, more worried about comfort. I talk about that too!

I have to say that my shade house was one of the best things I ever did. I like to put my cuttings in it. Lots of airflow and rain. The greenhouse gets too hot this time of year. I really only use the greenhouse for the winter

Awesome! Have fun in Italy. I spent 6 months in Aviano, back in 1998-1999. Was there while in the US Navy. We lived in Pordenone and traveled to the flight line at Aviano air base. Got to visit a lot of little local towns and even Verona. Very beautiful place and I promised myself I'd be back there someday. Hope you're enjoying it as much as I did!

This video felt like it belonged in that “propagation 101” series you recently started.
Speaking of experimenting, I used sand as a rooting medium last season. Did not work out, as the sand dried out under the snow (somehow), and the roots desiccated after bud-swell. Bark mulch seems to hold up better for overwintering up here in the frigid north.
Now that's an interesting point I haven't had to deal with in my area. The sand drying out from the dry cold air. Thanks for sharing that. As far as the Propagation 101 series, I know what you mean. The last few videos could have gone in that series but for whatever reason the series was going nowhere and getting few views. In fact, I was having to refer so many people to those videos to answer their questions because they weren't finding them on their own. Not sure why. Maybe it's the thumbnails. Maybe it's the algorithm. Decided to change it up and go back to my old random style. I may resurrect the series at some point this summer but maybe change up the thumbnail and some of the metadata.
For container grown plants I've done better without even a cold frame, overwintering outside in Western Pennsylvania. Why? Because everything is frozen up in winter and I can't water. Outside they get natural rain and snow melt. For the 5 or so nights of spring frost damaging to new shoots I take the sheets and blankets of my own bed to cover. OK, truth is I got 3 boxes of old blankets from secondhand store, but it sounds better the other way. You don't need a greenhouse or cold frame.
That's a really good point. It's better when they stay frozen all winter versus going through freeze/thaw cycles.

Thank you. The thing I like best about your videos is that you do show the results. Good or bad. Mostly good! The only suggestion I have is to always in each video let people know your growing zone. This is a pet peeve of mine with other channels. It makes a difference. Love your channel. Red hot Texas!

Hi Mike. I'm new to your channel and have been catching up on 5 yrs of your videos. Plan to get back into gardening heavily since I retired recently. Trying some of your rooting techniques with mixed success, but learning a lot. I root just about everything now and feel guilty if I prune back some plant cuttings and just throw the cuttings in the compost pile. The wife's broom broke and I thought about trying to root that. Live on a few acres in Northern NJ country (If you can believe that) and really appreciate you time put into this channel.
Haha, I'd love to see the broom handle root! Picking up gardening again sounds like a fun way to ease into retirement.
I love the "propagation like a pro" courses! We are building the box this weekend. Im having trouble finding where to put it. Im also nervous about using sand. (I'm in Tennessee, middle). I am hoping to propagate an old Damascus rose been on the property for over 40 years!
Right on! Why nervous about sand? I started with sand in my frame until I found the fir bark.
@@MikeKincaid79, I'm used to mixing organic compost and peat by hand and have only used sand to mimic seed dormancy (e.g., walnut, pawpaw, sassafras). I totally agree that it would be so easy to use, though, and I have lots of it! I have never tried to propagate cuttings. I love roses and have a small rosarium started. I even want to try growing a Rhododendron, the Fragrantissimum! Have you one of those?
Melinda. I also live in the middle of Tennessee. I'm the middle capital nursery area. I have propagated all different kinds of plants from native plants too non native plants. I do not use any greenhouse or plastic totes for a miniature greenhouse with climate in our high humidity climate . I put my cutting in pots of dirt under my shades where they get morning sun and afternoon noon shade . Even over winter, my cutting outside all winter . I have 75 % to 100 % success. Just make sure the potting soil or sand does not dry out .
I don't have that variety but I know it's super fragrant!

i actually propagate many plants, in green houses, in phoenix az lol. The one I can never root though, are roses. I get very close, but never any roots.

Seriously, a hoop house is likely best, but a greenhouse would be best in winter, but why bother for 2 months? I like to start plants in those totes. They create the perfect environment for figs and so on. But, gotta figger out how to root pomegranates and citrus.
Chico, it got down to 22F twice last winter. The calamondin orange was burned by the freeze (recovered) and even on the south side of the house plants got burned. hasta!
Haha, yeah, you live in a colder part of the desert. I suppose a greenhouse would be welcome. Wish I could grow citrus up here, get a lot of questions about it.

I have a litter of three nine-week old kittens that I've been raising since they were orphaned at 2 wks of age. One of them sat in my lap and intently watched most of this video. If I find little totes with catnip starts in them appearing around the house I will know where he got the idea.

Hey Mike, love the videos. Just routed 100+ laurels in 2 storage boxed. I was sick of buying them so thought I try out growing them. Should I now leave then until next summer b4 potting. Keep.up the good work mate. I'm in the UK.
Right on. If you got them rooted already and they have good strong roots, you can pot them up now. Still have plenty of warm weather left to get them re-established in pots before winter. That's how I started out with laurel. You may lose some but the majority will be ok. Waiting until they are stronger next spring will ensure more success with the transplant.
The best time of the year to propagate is now. Thank you for doing these videos Mike. (Although you do have a greenhouse)😂😂

😂 I knew where this was going and watch the video for probably the same reason you made the video. It's not a greenhouse it's a hoop house. You know not for nothing but that I know you're not hiding a secret cuz but after about five hundred bucks anybody can have their hoop house. I mean give or take some 3 in a quarter PVC pipe some rebar some two-by-sixes to frame the bottom some two-by-fours for the end walls and the crossmember 6 Mills paper plastic from Home Depot and I mean you're good to go it's a fun little thing it's a great project I'm glad I did. Matter of fact this video is encouraging me to make my second one Fenimore shaded locations have my first one is literally in direct sun next to the field actually that's probably the main reason it doesn't get a lot of attention it's in too much of a direct sun hence me wanting to build another one and it's lightly shaded location

I've been 'practicing' rooting cuttings for 3 years I'm still not successfull at it. I've tried so many things to make it work but I apparently and consistently doing something wrong so it's easier for me to buy seedlings or rooted cuttings. Not all of us have a rooting gene LOL

It's hard not to love you, Mike! You started me on propagation 5 summers ago, and while I'm no where near your level, I have successfully propagated many plants. I need to go look for some video's re: overwintering Japanese Maple seedlings (I've grown them from YOUR instructions) because I've successfully started many over the years, BUT I have NEVER, EVER had a single seedling survive the winter (Buffalo, NY, Zone 6B) They are hardy to my zone, typically about 6-7 inches tall from soil level and have 3 to 4 to 5 sets of true leaves on them, grown between May-ish through October-ish. I currently have 20 seedlings growing in 4in pots, and provide sun and shade throughout the day. Most have a second set of healthy leaves. I've actually considered begging a local nursery to overwinter this batch (hoping a $100 will persuade them), just to have my first group of 2nd year seedlings! I did pay attention to your tote idea, but I also know the the JM's can't dry out over the winter. This is the fourth batch of seedlings in 4 years, and I can't take another failure, so I'm off to find just the right video of yours to help me be successful. Sorry for the lengthy post, Lord knows you have many to read, but thank you so much for completely changing my summers for the past 5 years. I have beautiful sprawling gardens thanks to you, and as I said, it's impossible not to love you for your constant help and incredible enthusiasm! I'm sure Mike will have some good advice for you, but in general, plants kept in pots over the winter need to be two zones hardier than the zone you are in. So, in zone 6, to overwinter a plant in a pot, the plant would need to be hardy to zone 4, esp with the small 4 inch pots. To give them the best chance, protection in an unheated garage/building would be good, or bunch them all together in a sheltered location next your home and pile leaves around them for added insulation. Snow cover will provide good insulation as well. Cold, drying winds can be just as damaging as cold temperatures for tiny plants, so try to minimize their exposure. Good luck!

I would have given the same advice. Store them in a shed or garage that's unheated. Many people overwinter much more tender plants than JMs in your area, so just know that it can be done very successfully. Wait until they just go dormant to store them and then pull them out when you see those buds swelling or just starting to break open. You actually want to let them go dormant outside first so that they can harden off well. Then the garage will give added protection to a well hardened off plant. Good luck!
@@MikeKincaid79 Once they've gone dormant, could I just sit them on a shelf in the garage, as is, and keep an eye on their moisture content through the winter, or do I need to transfer them out of their 4 inch pots to something larger? Can they be considered dormant once they've lost their leaves? I assume they won't need to be covered in the unheated garage, as they'll be dormant, but I will need to be certain that they have moisture? I can do that! I'm guessing maybe any softwood cuttings of other species that are hardy to my area, but not developed enough to be planted... hydrangea, nepeta, lavender, etc could also be overwintered on that same shelf? I just want to be sure that I can place them in the garage, as they are, w/o coverings, burlap, or any other added protection beyond mulch? Thank you so much for putting up with my repeat questions in this comment! I'm just trying to be sure I'm understanding you correctly! I'll put up a designated shelf just for these plants, make sure they remain moist, and watch for their re-arrival in next spring! I think I have it, and I can't thank you enough! I live in the tropics, and theoretically, have 365 day growing seasons. The issue for me is that it’s a beach front property. Would this “cold frame” protect from salty sea air?
Only if it’s sealed from the elements.
Mike, i need to overwinter ferns and other porch plants, petunias, etc. I am in 8b but am in South Georgia. The temps can be extreme going from one extreme to another in one week. Housing suggestions?

You can use anything. The light diffusing material that goes in shop lights works great.
Well I'm getting hoop house and here's why. Last year I potted up 200 rose of sharon seedlings in 1/2 gal pots, by the end of July they were 14" tall so i whacked them down to 8" , they thickened up and by the end of October they were beautiful 12" plants . I was told just leave them outside they hardy and will come right back in the spring. Well guess what 150 plants died and only the plants in the middle of the stack lived. So much for if your plants are hardy to your area...
The hardiness of plants in pots is different than plants in the ground. Plants in pots have to be hardy to a zone or two colder than where you are.
Very rough year for rose of Sharon’s. Lost mine in Ohio zone 6. Garden answer lost some too in east Oregon.

You don't need a closed tote like this for seedlings. Seeds have everything right inside them, that they need to germinate and grow. They don't need high humidity.
Ive tried and tried to grow yoshino cherry blossoms but i wont give up😢 but i have tons of junipers now😂😂😂😂

You have 403 Thousand subscribers. Contact the company that that installs foam. Find out what brand of foam they use. Contact them. Tell them how many subscribers you have. They may donate the foam If you give them plugs during the rest of your build.
I am going to try to propagate lavender in the tote box. Do I just leave them in the box for the winter? I get snow here
You can leave them in the box but try to acclimate them to less humidity once they root. Just leave the lid on but cocked sideways to protect them a little more. You can also store them in an unheated shed through the winter.

Some. I built a hydroponic propagation system a few years ago but didn’t film it.
I don't see a price or anything at all for the tubs, and Amazon says I can't have hormone powder sent to WA state.
You can find the tubs at Walmart. You can buy the Hormodin 3 through other nursery sites that will ship to Washington (I do this), or use dip n grow.

You can start with a basic frame for most laurels and then move up to a frame with bottom heat when you want to root tougher to root plants. I have so many videos about this that it's hard to point you to all of them. I have your frame with glass inside a hoop house (poly tunnel) .
The cuttings keep growing brown, how do I protect the entire tunnel from the sun?

I use a white plastic that blocks about 50% of the sun on my hoop house. But the truth is, I don't have my frame inside the hoop house. I place it on the north side of a building so that the sun never touches the glass but it gets lots of overhead skylight. You could use a shade cloth material over your tunnel to block some sun but it would be better to build a makeshift lean-to wall on the back side of your frame so that it blocks the sun.

I started quite a bit of fig cuttings using a tote. Now I’m looking to find a way to keep CH figs out doors here in zone 5.
It’s not supposed to work here but I’ve met quite a few people doing it, so I’d like to find a way to try.
What if you built a small wooden box that could go over the tree during the winter. You run power out to the box and keep a small lightbulb plugged in all winter to keep the temp up a few degrees. Might work.
Will the frame root Dr pepper? I want a Dr pepper tree.

I have been using no greenhouse or any kind of structure. Growing potted plants(mostly veggies and fruits) but I have a serious bug problem without any kind of protection.

I was actually thinking add another hoop-house.
That was the original plan. Still going back and forth on whether or not I want to tear out the small one and replace with a bigger hoop house or just put the 20 foot wide hoop house up somewhere else. No time right now but I'll try to get there before we all die, haha.
