Thanks, Myles. I think once you get past the classic 70s prog it becomes a much broader genre. I was tempted to add The Flaming Lips and the Smile to the list. Yoshimi is pure prog imho, but I've covered it enough recently. And when I listen to the Smilethere are lots of genres coming through but I think it is based on prog (as a lot of Radiohead stuff is). Porcupine Tree are brilliant and going to see Riverside in May in Glasgow and saw Ozric Tentacles last week. I love everything that Steven Wilson has done. You have made great choices👍🏼

Very good Andy, do great albums there. I've been thinking recently about prog albums if recommend to people who have never listened to prog and maybe feel they don't like it. I would include Greenslade - Spyglass Miracles, Renaissance - A Song For All Seasons, Alan Parsons Project - I Robot and Barclay James Harvest - Time Honoured Ghosts. All those carry a prog hallmark but don't go into excess and have accessible songs. Maybe a subject you'd consider.

@@andysalbums I would include Greta Van Fleet, like Led Zeppelin and Rush, they have elements of prog in there. When I think of a newbie to prog I always think of Shaun who is very grounded and very song oriented in his tastes, having watched Pete Pardoe's video, I think he aimed too high, I wouldn't really include King Crimson, I feel you need to work your up to King Crimson which may than lead you to Van Der Graaf Generator. Shaun admits he only fully understood Dark Side of the Moon last year. So here would be my prog starter kit; 1: Genesis - Selling England... 2: Pink Floyd - Animals 3: Jethro Tull - Songs From the Wood 4: Renaissance - A Song For All Seasons 5: Greenslade - Time and Tide 6: ELP - Black Moon 7: Yes - Drama 8: Camel - Moon Madness 9: Mike Oldfield - Tubular Bells 10: Porcupine Tree - In Absentia Honourable mentions: Caravan - Girls Who Grow Plump.. Hi Andy, Clutching at Straws is probably my favourite Marillion album, quite dark. Originals all seem to be quite crackly (I've had a few) so you're probably best with the reissue. Deadwing or In Absentia are my favourite Porcupine Tree albums. Airbag sound interesting. Three of my favourite neo-prog artists are Big Big Train, Pineapple Thief and Opeth. Hi Andy, Great topic. There is so much post the Golden era of prog to enjoy. If you are not familiar and like guitar stuff: Bjørn Riis, the Airbag guitar player, has a most excellent website and TH-cam channel called Gilmourish. Excellent resource for those that want to get some Gilmour tones out of their guitars. Bjørn Riis has also released a Floyd tribute EP called "A Fleeting Glimpse" featuring Floyd backing vocalist Durga McBroom. Riis has other solo albums as well. Airbag is working on a new album. Wobbler is one of my favorites. They also have some Gentle Giant and Italian prog inspiration I think, but Yes is certainly an influence as well. You might like The Chronicles of Father Robin as well with some of the Wobbler guys if not familiar. They have dropped 3 albums in less than a year on the Norwegian Karisma label. Hammill is always welcome in my ears. Also enjoyed him with Isildurs Bane from latter years. Cheers, Richard
I know what you mean. But Rush seemed to generate more debate than any band. I've had lots of people comment on how pleased they were to see Rush in there. I love Jurassic Shift. One of my employees turned me on to that album. I found an OG but they wanted too much for it. They are original put I never thought of them as prog. It seemed like something to go dance to. Someday I will buy a Porcupine Tree album…some day
Ozric are a bit of a load of things, but there's some prog in there. One of the things I was trying to get across by avoiding the 70s was that prog now is much broader than the 70s classics, even if those are the foundations. 'Permanent Waves' is phenomenal. Feels like it's from the 70s to me and I guess it must have been recorded in the 70s, as it was released at the very start of 1980. Great choices, overall, by the way!

GVF are very good. They tend to get dismissed as Zepellin copyists, but they are genuinely good imho. The singer and guitarist are twins and the bassist their brother. The last track on this album is truly epic
Lot's of stuff here that is new to me, Andy - probably because I'm largely stuck in a 70's music time warp! That said, I have been getting into Nightwish and their album 'Endless Forms Most Beautiful' could be something of a modern prog classic - based around themes of science and reason.

I went off on a tangent all about Tolkien growing up where I did in South and West Birmingham and the landmarks that infuenced the Shire and the Two Towers. I will watch it. Tolkien and the world he created is a rejection of what he observed during the battle of the Somme and the devastating impact he believed modern industry would inevitably have on England and its biosphere. Its ok if people want to escape from modernity by listening to music and reading literature about hobbits. The moral of the story is the quest of the prog purist to find ever novel music will encounter alot of false fruit. listening to chuck berry or jefferson airplane can also be splendid. @@andysalbums
You lost me by starting your listing with “Rush”. I’ve seen them live several times beginning in 1974. They never resonated with me primarily because of the nonsensical lyrics and Geddy Lee’s utterly shrill vocals. Your inclusion of the band “Riverside” is super classic. They are a superb progressive rock band long overlooked and vastly underrated. Thanks for your perspective.
I was like you with Rush until I tried again about 5 years ago with Hemispheres and found myself really liking it and have picked up quite a few of their albums since. THanks for watching and taking the trouble to comment. Cheers

I own several of their albums on CD and vinyl including “Moving Pictures”, “Signals”, “Power Windows”, “Grace Under Pressure”, “Presto”, “Test For Echo”, “Vapor Trails” and “Hold Your Fire”. In spite of my collection (which are all Japanese pressings) I rarely if ever listen to Rush these days. My bias towards “Rush” (in addition to the vocals of Geddy Lee) may also be because of the sheer number of truly superior bands that I’ve seen live. I’m 71 years old. I’ve played drums for over 50 years. In fact Ginger Baker along with Keith Moon and Michael Giles were my original inspirations for the start of my love of drumming. I started going to concerts in 1967. I’ve attended live performances of stellar Rock and Progressive Rock bands including (but not limited to) “Cream”, “The Jimi Hendrix Experience”, “King Crimson”, “The Who”, “Jethro Tull”, “ELP”, “Yes”, “Pink Floyd”, “Led Zeppelin”, “The Allman Brothers”, “Mountain”, “Elton John”, “David Bowie”, “SuperTramp”, “UK”, “The Strawbs”, “Donovan”, “Wishbone Ash” and “Roxy Music”. In fact several weeks before I first saw “Rush” perform live in 1974, I saw “Genesis” perform “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway” at the Masonic Temple in Detroit. That performance may have colored my receptivity to the music of “Rush”. In addition in 1969 I saw “The Who” premiere “Tommy” (in the US) at The Grande Ballroom in Detroit. In 1970 I saw the “ELP/Yes” tour at the Eastown Theater in Detroit. In 1972, as a student at Denver University, I saw “Pink Floyd” perform “The Dark Side Of The Moon”. Today, for me, it’s difficult to take “Rush” seriously (other than as a solid Rock band) given that I’ve seen, live, what I believe to be the ultimate rock power trios (or power trios with lead singer); Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, ELP, Mountain, Led Zeppelin, The Who and The Police. @@magiscichoam wow. What a gig list. Amazing number of top bands you've seen. Mine pales in comparison, though I did see a few crackers in the 70s. Genesis in Feb 73 touring Foxtrot (a few days before they recorded the live album) and then later when they toured Selling England. In Jan 73 I was at the Uriah Heep gig at Birmingham Town Hall when they recorded their live album. In 74 I saw Pink Floyd between DSOTM and WYWH which included a first hearing (for me) of Shine On... One of the chest gigs I saw in that era was Elton John touring Yellow Brick Road. I wasn't expecting much of it tbh. My girlfriend at the time wanted to see him. But, wow, it was truly superb. Happy days! Cheers
I'd call Rush a lot of things, but "Prog" it wasn't. A thinking-man's metal, maybe, but none of the agility of Yes, or even Greenslade. Marillion, maybe, but density, technical perfection, and endless noodling do not a "prog-rock" album make. Santana did a half-dozen LPs of latin-flavored "progressive" rock that millions bought and enjoyed. No need to go out of your way! Pete Hamill, definitely, tho/
Thanks for the comments. I understand the points, though I'm not sure I would call Santana prog. Rush I thiink are one of the first of that sub-genre progressive-metal. Some of their albums lean more to the metal and others to thr prog, but I agree they are not remotely like Yes! Thanks for watching. Cheers
@@andysalbums I think Santana is, Rush isn't. Rush puts on airs of deeper meaning, but the music is very basic, while Carlos starts from Mariachi, and soars into Jazz, Metal, Prog, and good old rock 'n' roll! Not a lot of "experimentation", or challenging the limits.
@@andysalbums Rush is your basic power-trio, based on the format made famous by Jimi Hendrix, and Alvin Lee, John Fogerty, Jethro Tull (plus flute), Blue Cheer, Mountain, Foghat, et al. Their lyrics were sometimes better, sometimes not, but no experimentation, however soaring the guitars. I love Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, and The Spirit of Radio, not the 2112 saga, or much of the early LPs, Working Man, Fly by Night, guitar-driven, basic I-1V-V variations.

My bias towards “Rush” (in addition to the vocals of Geddy Lee) may also be because of the sheer number of truly superior bands that I’ve seen live. I’m 71 years old. I’ve played drums for over 50 years. In fact Ginger Baker along with Keith Moon and Michael Giles were my original inspirations for the start of my love of drumming. I started going to concerts in 1967. I’ve attended live performances of stellar Rock and Progressive Rock bands including (but not limited to) “Cream”, “The Jimi Hendrix Experience”, “King Crimson”, “The Who”, “Jethro Tull”, “ELP”, “Yes”, “Pink Floyd”, “Led Zeppelin”, “The Allman Brothers”, “Mountain”, “Elton John”, “David Bowie”, “SuperTramp”, “UK”, “The Strawbs”, “Donovan”, “Wishbone Ash” and “Roxy Music”. In fact several weeks before I first saw “Rush” perform live in 1974, I saw “Genesis” perform “The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway” at the Masonic Temple in Detroit. That performance may have colored my receptivity to the music of “Rush”. In addition in 1969 I saw “The Who” premiere “Tommy” (in the US) at The Grande Ballroom in Detroit. In 1970 I saw the “ELP/Yes” tour at the Eastown Theater in Detroit. In 1972, as a student at Denver University, I saw “Pink Floyd” perform “The Dark Side Of The Moon”.
Today, for me, it’s difficult to take “Rush” seriously (other than as a solid Rock band) given that I’ve seen, live, what I believe to be the ultimate rock power trios (or power trios with lead singer); Cream, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, ELP, Mountain, Led Zeppelin, The Who and The Police.

@@magiscichoam wow. What a gig list. Amazing number of top bands you've seen. Mine pales in comparison, though I did see a few crackers in the 70s. Genesis in Feb 73 touring Foxtrot (a few days before they recorded the live album) and then later when they toured Selling England. In Jan 73 I was at the Uriah Heep gig at Birmingham Town Hall when they recorded their live album. In 74 I saw Pink Floyd between DSOTM and WYWH which included a first hearing (for me) of Shine On... One of the chest gigs I saw in that era was Elton John touring Yellow Brick Road. I wasn't expecting much of it tbh. My girlfriend at the time wanted to see him. But, wow, it was truly superb. I'd call Rush a lot of things, but "Prog" it wasn't. A thinking-man's metal, maybe, but none of the agility of Yes, or even Greenslade. Marillion, maybe, but density, technical perfection, and endless noodling do not a "prog-rock" album make. Santana did a half-dozen LPs of latin-flavored "progressive" rock that millions bought and enjoyed. No need to go out of your way! Pete Hamill, definitely, tho/
Thanks for the comments. I understand the points, though I'm not sure I would call Santana prog. Rush I thiink are one of the first of that sub-genre progressive-metal. Some of their albums lean more to the metal and others to thr prog, but I agree they are not remotely like Yes! Thanks for watching. Cheers
@@andysalbums I think Santana is, Rush isn't. Rush puts on airs of deeper meaning, but the music is very basic, while Carlos starts from Mariachi, and soars into Jazz, Metal, Prog, and good old rock 'n' roll! Not a lot of "experimentation", or challenging the limits.
@@andysalbums Rush is your basic power-trio, based on the format made famous by Jimi Hendrix, and Alvin Lee, John Fogerty, Jethro Tull (plus flute), Blue Cheer, Mountain, Foghat, et al. Their lyrics were sometimes better, sometimes not, but no experimentation, however soaring the guitars. I love Tom Sawyer, Red Barchetta, and The Spirit of Radio, not the 2112 saga, or much of the early LPs, Working Man, Fly by Night, guitar-driven, basic I-1V-V variations.
