Peter van Weelden built me a Gainland a few years ago. Mine is black and not brushed metal like the one you have in the video. It is absolutely fantastic and will always remain a part of my rig. Thanks for the great videos Michael - your playing is fantastic and your original songs are great. Please keep it up.
Sounds good, right out of the box all knobs in the middle. I'm also surprised how finely the tone stack is tuned, like you were fiddling with the bass, mid and treble all over the place and none of it was ridiculous sounding. All of it was very usable. That to me speaks of fine craftsmanship. As usual, "you can't get one anywhere. Michael Toren has one."
OMG a Van Weelden. Everything Peter touches sound great, it's a pity it is so rare and SOO expensive ... I tried a plexi he modded once and it was in the top 3 of the best amplifiers I tried ever
Hi, Peter sent me his price list back in November of 2022, and the "Gainland - 19" Hi-gain preamp” was listed as being € 1425,61 excluding VAT tax, which is about $1,544.54 USD. It wasn’t as expensive as I thought it would be, especially if you already have an amp you can use for the power section. However, there could possibly be a long wait to get it, and shipping could be on the expensive side. I’m not sure about those things. Anyways, just thought I would chime in about what the actual prices were like. Great amps. Regards, Leo
I have one of their Dumble style pedals and with the right amp it sounds so damn good. The rich, chewy, harmonically mids are so textural and touch sensitive. I’d love to get one of these should the make them again.
That's a EUROPEAN sounding Marshall hot-rod! :D Van Welden made a big and expensive Distortion preamp pedal some years ago, that Adrian Vandenberg used a lot :)
@@BigHairyGuitarsAlso, please consider releasing some of your other demo songs on Spotify like you did with Acceptance, or make an entire album. I keep going through your TH-cam videos just to listen to the demo songs. Your guitar playing and composition skills are on another level.
I blame the Golden Age of Guitar Tone for my continuing decline of alternate picking ability. When I plug in, I spend way too much time hitting glorious open chords and chunky lower string 8th notes. Before I know it, it’s time to get back to the family or work or something else and “practice” session is over. But it sounds so good.
Hi Michael, I have the Kemper profiles of this beast. They sound absolute killer with a marshall 4x12. Thank's for this rewiev, that reminds me of them. I just loaded theme up and can't stop playin. They sound very similar to the sounds that you present here. killer solosound with a bit delay on it. Have a nice x-mas mate!!!
You know... I tried. The Kemper couldn't accurately reproduce the harmonic richness and sonic spectrum of the Gainland. It sort of kept doing a Boss MetalZone approximation of the glorious Van Weelden tone.
thats a heavy sound but also a heavy price tag, barely any dealers here in europe, the website looks proprietary, i don`t know but i think i skip on this one... and get a victory preamp or amp head instead since i did a lot of research what to buy and christmas is coming so I would like to treat myself to something exciting new gear to withstand the boring holidays. peace 🙏🙏
I don't know if this is really that rare, Peter is still alive and in business, so maybe if you contact him he can build you one. He's also working on a follow up on the Royal Overdrive pedal.
My Classic is blown. Again. This time, I guess a leaky capacitor and it almost caught on fire. Looks like some damage to the PCB. I’m going to send it back to Mr Freyette. Again.
How much of an impact do you think the power section makes when using a preamp? Is it a noticeable difference between things like the Freidman, a Boogie or the Revv D20? Thinking in extremes for the examples.
Huge difference. as an example, I have an SP77 Soldano preamp I've used with about 8 different rack power amps. best it sounded in every case was with bigger OTs - peavey 60/60, Soldano SL105 slave, and into the loop of my modded Bassman (massive OTs rated for more than 200W, even though it's a 30-40W amp with 2x 6L6s). the fundamental character of the pre doesn't change, but how the power amp handles, well, power? will affect the transients and how 'tightly' the bass holds together. Choose your power amp and cab/speakers combo for how 'spongy' you want the overall tone to get. if you like 'tight' the more gain you use, the bigger iron you need in the power stage, imo. YMMV. sorry for the essay.
Very 90's but chewy, Drop c would be intense. Earplugs ever?? The Eargasm types are not bad but still suck the clarity out . The 10KHZ is getting pretty bad for me.
Well, let's hope I accidentally step into one of these. Sounds Awesome!!!!! Just don't use Rack Gear anymore at this time or for see able future. Sometimes I think maybe, but then I realize what it would take to make that a reality. Nope, just not going to happen. SMFH 😂😂😂
@@BigHairyGuitarsI have one of his Royal Overdrive pedals, and he actually used epoxy to glue the thing shut. I usually open up all of my pedals, just out of curiosity to see the inside. You can’t open it up at all to see the insides. Well, I could get it open if I had to, but not much of a point in it. The problem with gooped boards is repair. It would make it a nightmare to repair.

Kind of reminds me of my seymour Duncan 6 Preamp tube Preamp! man it was nice,

This is best thing I've ever heard and I'm not even kidding. WOW! All that sponge-y, articulate, chewy gain 🤘🏼😚
Any plans to make kemper profiles of this? Sounds awesome Michael!
I have a jmp 1987 he modded for Adrian Vandenberg back in the day.
That's a EUROPEAN sounding Marshall hot-rod! :D Van Welden made a big and expensive Distortion preamp pedal some years ago, that Adrian Vandenberg used a lot :)
As soon as I heard the first few chunks with the gain at 2 I knew you’d make it sound amazing.
Man I even like that dirty clean. AC/DC all the way.
Sounds very Naylor-ish. I like it.
That's EXACTLY what I thought! Big harmonically right rock distortion... but kinds smooth too.

Love mine. Older black version 🤘
If you're interested in that preamp I could ask Peter. His shop is about 30 minute from where I live.
He used to be a great EvH player himself.
How can I message you, Narvul?

As a fellow kemper player, where did you get your profiles of this?
I don’t think there’s ever been a more appropriate name for a piece of guitar gear. It truly is a “Gainland”.
@5:44 Ahhhhh, the scrunch face setting. nice.
LOVE IT! It's got SLICE!
W the lil sister it just rounded out perfectly. Kaboom
Any chances you're gonna put some profiles of it?
1:50 good to know. JEL 100 is def a bucket list amp.
FYI the pronounciation is "Van Whale-dun"
Sounds sick!
esto es una locura como suena¡¡ sonido excelente¡ definicion¡ y un golpe increible¡,no sabia de el, gracias¡¡
Loved the sound and video!! Thanks!
I have one of these!
This channel always blows me away
dude I would LOVE to see you demo an engl e530 or even the older engl e520!
Sounds great. Like a tighter JCM800 2203/2204 type amp.
price is ridiculous, its sold for about 1600€ at reverb at this moment 😂✌
Intense for sure
Dang, sounds rad as hell
Awesome tone
There ya go, King's X. The unit sounds great! I think I liked it through the Little Sister best, but it rips, regardless.
sounds amazing!
How come the presence is in the preamp?
Sounds really great!!!
Seemed to have just one distorted tone irrespective of the control settings.....
I think it changes slightly but the eq is definitely not very active.
Where can you even find one of these? I been searching lol
next synergy module?
How do you think it compares to the Morin
The Morin is tigher, and more focused, but the Van Weelden is more harmonically rich. Really couldn't go wrong with either for the dirty stuff
Killer tone @ 7:12 what song is that?🔥
That's Lay It Down from Ratt in the 80's
@@BigHairyGuitars thanks brother 🤘🏼

Absolutely fantastic video have a wonderful day ❤😊
I'd call it a Van Helsing, just cause it sounds monsterous..
These are insanely rare and very expensive when you see one.
mix Soldano vs Peavey 5150 ii in first gainstage i think...cool
That thing is rarer than hens teeth!
Not so rare in Europe I guess…I got two of those….
Your lil buddy has wayy too much in the vault bro....killer clip. My Langner kills through my vht classic. You ran it through the 2150, correct?
Yes, I believe so. I have to revisit the Langner. My buddy has a second one now.

@@BigHairyGuitars yes, and the second one has all the bells & whistles. So versatile, one of the best preamps ever made.

Yes, vacuum tubes

Wasn't Van Weelden the guy that butchered EVH's main Marshall, and Friedman had to rebuild it?
Van Weelden has been the one to give that Marshall its "brown" sound. Everything else about a variac, is utter nonsense.
