Quite malapropos, but I just wanted to mention that I really love what Dee Dee Bridgewater did to the Jacques Brel ballad Ne Me Quitte Pas, playing parts of it in 7. It really works quite well. First time I heard a jazz ballad in seven.

So I find the concept of improvising rhythm harder than improvising melody because improvising melody still retains the harmonic structure, but what does rhythm have as an underlying structure? In my attempts at improvising the original rhythmic patterns seem to ‘bleed’ through unless playing all quarter notes, eighth notes, triplets or a combination, but is that really improvising the rhythm? Can you recommend any instructive examples of improvising rhythm where the performer really gets away from the original pattern without playing mainly even eighth, triplets etc. I can think of rhythm changes heads that don’t resemble the original pattern but these are composed rather than improvised. Favorite gesture? Would have to either be a wink or a smile

Yeah, that sounds very interesting! 7 is usually so rhythmic and ballads are usually so fluid. I'll take a listen!
