Peyton just didn't want the Raiders to get the ball back and have even the slightest chance at a comeback. He had the lead, and he wanted to run out the clock. The Colts were already ahead 31-26, but scoring a touchdown would give the Raiders the ball back with about 1:30 left. Sure, it would have been a longshot for the Raiders to score 12 points in that span of time (if Manning had scored and Vinatieri had gotten the PAT, the score would have been 38-26), but when Peyton slid for the first down, it was the final nail in the coffin.

This was supposed to be a handoff, Manning just did his own thing without telling anyone because one of the Raiders D-linemen used to be a Colt, recognized the call, and told the rest of the defense where it was going, so they all prepared for the called play. Manning just never handed off the ball and ran for it.

Standing at 6'5, If he'd taken one more stride, dove forward, and extended the ball, he would have easily broken the goalline ... he made a minor mistake at the end of one hell of a play, plain and simple, no way 78 was catching him from behind ...
