    The interview with Peyton after this game was epic. He said his dad taught him that play, and the key to running well it was to not even tell his teammates what he was doing. That way they would commit to blocking for the running back, and their facial expressions wouldn't give the trickery away. He did that once before in Indy vs the Jaguars and once for the Broncos in a game at Dallas.

      @kush God It had nothing to do with class. It was football IQ and understanding the situation with the scoreboard and the clock. A first down in this case was better than a touchdown.
      Peyton just didn't want the Raiders to get the ball back and have even the slightest chance at a comeback. He had the lead, and he wanted to run out the clock. Don't think for a second that Peyton has ever been one to show mercy to an opponent.

    The announcers weren't too bright back then. The clip is missing the context. This play was run with 1:39 on the clock in the 4th quarter. The Raiders had no timeouts left. Peyton actually should had slid much sooner. But he had so much grass in front of him I guess he couldn't help it. The raiders had sold out to stop the run on 3rd and 2.

    I was literally at this game with my dad and cousin, so I still vividly remember Peyton’s run even 11+ years later.
    I was pretty mad that day since the Raiders had just been eliminated from playoff contention before the game started since the Chiefs won their game, so the Peyton run was salt in the wound. Nowadays, I can look back at this and laugh as I’m pretty happy I got to witness this live.

    Remember this game and watching it live. And, watching this video I remember I was berating Dan Fouts for being SUCH an idiot here. Peyton went down on purpose NOT because he thought he was gonna get caught as Fouts so enthusiastically and repeatedly mentioned. He went down because it was a 3rd or 4th and short with less than 2 minutes on the clock, and, the Raiders, having just burned their final timeouts, needed a stop. The Colts needed only a first down to be able to simply kneel away the rest of the clock and end the game. Damn linemen, Fouts.

      Because that was the better strategic decision to win the game.
      What you don't see in this highlight clip are the score and the clock. The Colts were already ahead 31-26, but scoring a touchdown would give the Raiders the ball back with about 1:30 left. Sure, it would have been a longshot for the Raiders to score 12 points in that span of time (if Manning had scored and Vinatieri had gotten the PAT, the score would have been 38-26), but when Peyton slid for the first down, it was the final nail in the coffin.

    • @EvilTwinn
      @EvilTwinn 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because of the game situation. What you don't see is that the Colts are winning and there's about a minute left in the 4th quarter and the Raiders have no timeouts. Sliding for the first down guarantees the win for the Colts, who will then kneel it out. If he had scored with that, the Raiders MIGHT have been able to come back. I mean, it would have been a 12 point deficit with barely any time on the clock, but it's possible. Take the W, don't need to pad stats.

      His blockers were blocking for the called run play. This was supposed to be a handoff, Manning just did his own thing without telling anyone because one of the Raiders D-linemen used to be a Colt, recognized the call, and told the rest of the defense where it was going, so they all prepared for the called play. Manning just never handed off the ball and ran for it.

    Biased ass commentary ... Standing at 6'5, If he'd taken one more stride, dove forward, and extended the ball, he would have easily broken the goalline ... he made a minor mistake at the end of one hell of a play, plain and simple, no way 78 was catching him from behind ... I bet he wishes he had a do over on this one ...
