- This music reminds me a lot of Bach’s Matthew Passion. What more can I say…..
From Suite BWV 997
Recorded in me and my wife’s studio.
Guitar by Georg Bolin
Painting by Kerstin Eriksson-Söllscher
For 40 years I've listened to every recorded lutenist on this repertoire, and while the field is peppered with some fantastic musicians, I've always come back to your interpretations as the ones that embody in my mind the essence of these compositions. I am grateful to have been able to hear you play.
That’s so kind-thanks a lot 🎶
Me too. His 2 CD Bach recording is the one I am still keeping.
Same here! discovered his lute suites recordings when I was around 10 and still keep listening them! my all time fav!!
Listen also to Narciso Yepes.
There is something ancient and direct about the plucked instruments which speaks so tenderly and directly in expert hands.
Goran, I'm a metalhead from the UK, and I have no idea how I arrived here, but this was fucking beautiful. Thanks mate.
You’re so welcome 🎵
Just a minute while I wipe the tear away. How could anybody not love this?
thanks a lot for that🎶
Because they are tone deaf. The majority of people under 40 unfortunately who choose to listen to computerized music with no melody or actual instruments.
By the way, exquisite playing, you sang the music through your fingers. You and your guitar were one.
On TH-cam, where we have so many channels with zero useful content, your channel is like a diamond among stones. Thank you for the great performance!
thanks a lot 🎶🎶🎶
Not so long ago, when CD was not yet on the market and we had only vinyls and tapes, depending on where you live, it was sometime quite hard to find this kind of music.
And now, we can listen and look performance from great masters such as Goran, as soon as they upload it! Amazing!
Thank you very much for sharing your gift with the world and I hope you'll keep doing that for a long time!
I wish you all the best!
thanks a lot 🎶
Such an emotional transition
No any words I’ve left to say
Love from Russia
Still life here
Thanks for exposing the life for a world
True master
"THE CRUCIFIX FISH TESTIFIES" Look it up
Your Bach recording for Deutsche Grammophone is a masterwork: in a bad health period of my young age I've found great help with your artistry. It's a pleasure to thank you after so many years, founding this treasure in a surprising astonishing way.
So happy to hear - thank you 🎶
So beautiful!
Your thinking about closing to Matthäus Passion is really on the point.👏🙏👍
Thanks a lot dear Andreas 🎶
No other composer suffers as much from this phenomenon as Bach, for every piece is his most beautiful piece in the hands of the right interpreter. 🙂
Mr Sollscher - I discovered 'Werke fur Gitarre' on Deutsche Grammaphone almost 30 years ago and it remains a turning point in my life as a listener and as a player. Thank you!
I’m so happy to hear - thanks a lot 🎵
Thank you for this moment of pure peace. Bach music is very needed in those times.
Thanks-and I agree ….🎶
I have listened to your interpretations for some years now, it is great to see you well. I like a lot how tastefully you approach the intonation and how purposeful your playing is. Your mastery of counterpoint in fugues is fantastic and I do really hear the orchestra of instruments in your playing. Wish you long, healthy years, and an infinite energy resource to channel through your playing
Thanks a lot - that’s really very kind of you 🎶
That is the best Bach I have heard in a real long time. Truly a gem
Thanks 🎵
Gorgeous! Layered but direct, intimate yet spiritual. Thank you for sharing this wonderful music!
thanks 🎶
Sublime. What a treat. I clicked for the curiosity and stayed for the Beauty. Thanks for Posting
thanks🎶
If J S Bach composed it, it is obviously a masterpiece from a Maestro 🥰😊
So happy that Göran has found a large audience here on TH-cam! Amazing playing.
thanks 🎶
Thank you for your expression of beauty and simplicity through music.
"Allow yourself to be simple, for in simplicity all things may be given to you... Truth must always bring simplicity, for simplicity brings resolution and right understanding and establishes peace and confidence in those who can receive it." (Marshall Vian Summers, Steps to Knowledge)
Thanks-so true🎶
The deepest performance of the piece. Beautiful.
Thanks a lot 🙏
Heartfully and masterfully renditioned, bravo Maestro! 👏
Your recordings of lute are amazing :)
Love it, Göran! I've been a fan of your exquisite playing for many decades, so I was happy when youtube algorithm offered this.
So glad to hear-thanks🎶
Clicked on the video for the interesting instrument and immediately felt tendrils of melancholy drive through my heart. I looked at the title and saw J.S.Bach. Of course I did.
Could there possibly be anything more musically beautiful than this? For me, this was a supremely magnificent performance.
thanks a lot 🎶
Quelle beauté, merci du fond de ce bel après-midi de juin à Montréal... Paix et harmonie 🤍
Merci beaucoup 🎵🎵🎵
What an extraordinary, skilled and beautyful performance! Thanks for your wonderful play!
thanks a lot 🎶
I grew up listening to Segovia playing Bach on the guitar. This performance brings me back to those glorious days of experiencing utter perfection.
If you're a Segovia guy, check out: Marcin playing Carmen Opera, or Asturias....next level guitar playing. Thanks me later. :)
@@jesterlead Thanks. Interesting approach to guitar playing. What you didn't know is that I am 81 years old and for me less is more.
@@stephenjablonsky1941 I'm a 60's baby so you've got me by a few years. :) I've always liked Segovia and John Williams, but the new talent (like Marcin) are definitely next level on the guitar. Stuff I can't touch and I've been playing for 40 years.
@@jesterlead Try John Feeley playing the Bach Chaconne in D minor. That is about as close to perfect as things get.
thanks 🎶🎶
“Basically for the last 400 years we’ve all been practising Bach…” - Nigel Kennedy
that’s true. And probably also for the next 400
Maestro, your wonderful music has accompanied me through my life since I was about 16 years old and my classical guitar teacher shared with me an album of your recordings of the lute/cello suites transcribed to guitar and that album remains one of my all time favorites. It is truly wonderful getting to see you playing this today... what a wonderful and warm feeling.
You've been part of my life for now 22 years and I'm grateful for what you've contributed to it!
Thank you so very much ! Reading this makes me so happy. Music is fantastic 🎶
Me2... A different album, though. the Lute Suites.
Regarding the unusual frets on bass chords, let me give an input, from a lutenist perspective : If we go back to "renaissance" lute, we have an instrument with 6 strings tuned in 4th : G-D-A-F-C-G (from up to low) that we play with left hand (like guitar), on which, in renaissance (Dowland period) a 7th bass string was added. The 7th can be tuned as a F (one degree lower than the bass G) or as a D if needed. This string is still fretted, so that the F#, first inversion of D major, can be played occasionally at the bass. So, yes, we play the 7th string with left hand sometime. Then a 8th string was added (F & D or C), and up to 10 (F,E,D,C). The added bass are called "open" basses, tuned on diatonic descending mode (every tone) - so the right hand thumb strike the needed bass, as the left hand of the pianist would. Now, we need to take an other fact in consideration : at that time, only gut strings existed (very expensive and breaking all time !) and the more you low down to bass, the longer the vibrating length must be. This is the reason why, in Italy, they invented the archiluth, adding a long piece of wood (mine is 1,40 m but it can reach 2 meters) with an other peg box - and the "open" bass are therefore in the void, no fret needed because they are never altered. BUT !!! there is a but !!! But, the 7th (F) and the 8th (E) are still upon the frets... why ? For the reason I explained before : the F is often altered in F# (D minor-> D major), and the E moll is altered in E (G minor -> G major), two tonalities very often used in Renaissance and baroque period. So to end up with this long annoying and cumbersome input, the fact that this guitar has frets all along is a pure esthetic choice from the luthier... esthetic that I, personally, don't really share. And why all strings, including lower bass are on the same "short" peg box ? Because, nowadays, we use "cordes filées" (sorry I don't know the term in english - "coated" may be ?) in copper or silver, and this changes the physical rules.
In English the bass strings are called “wound strings “
@@travismcdermott6951 Thank You Travis, little by little I improve my technical vocabulary !
Playing Bach on this altoguitar on stage my father once found himself a very disappointed viewer who felt deceived bacause my father not once did fret the lower strings :-). I have seen modern day players/composers however who did fret them to a certain extent (probably even beyond the 8th string but I'm not sure).
Such detailed and careful mastery of this piece! I will listen to this many times. I love the way you play it! I found it healing and peaceful. Thank you.
thanks a lot 🎶

thanks a lot 🎶
That was beautiful, thank you so much for sharing!
Thanks 🎵🎵🎵
The colors of his shirt and collar and the yellowish color of the instrument echo the colors in the painting. The shapes in the painting even echo the window. Nice job with the additional harmony! (Sorry I am a visual person who loves music.)
I noticed the same color composition...the picture echoed his shirt, sweater and guitar. Very relaxing visually and added to the richness of the music. Wonderful execution of the piece.
Yeah, me too.
Thank you for this moment of pure beauty! 😊
thanks a lot 🎶
Every piece is beautiful through your hands!
Very kind-thanks a lot 🎶
Beautiful interpretation and timeless piece. I can't find the words to express how much I appreciate that music over 300 years old exists and is played...I love music so much
This was beautiful and just what I needed. Music. Thank you for recording this. I’ve subscribed and look forward to more wonderful content.
This was just beautiful... so moving
As Glenn Gould said " When I hear Bach on the lute, I hear Bach - when I hear Weiss on the lute, I hear the lute ! " .

Such a satisfying piece performed so lovingly. What a pleasure. When I began to listen, I had a headache , which had been building all day... it was gone by the end of your performance. Thank you!
thanks a lot 🎶
Beautiful! Thank you for sharing this.
Oops. I intended to send my previous comment from this account. "Your beautiful playing inspired me to begin playing the 11-string alto guitar around 7 years ago, when I found some of your old recordings here on TH-cam. They helped me fall in love with the instrument, and to appreciate how perfectly suited it is to playing the music of J.S. Bach. You have gotten even better since. Thank you, maestro. You have changed my life for the better. Liked and subscribed!"
Thanks a lot - I’m so happy to hear. Keep playing and enjoying 🎶
Beautiful. Thank you!

thanks 🎶🎶🎶
Beautifully played!
thanks 🎶
Always so beautiful - thanks Göran!
Thanks a lot 🎶
Beautiful!
New Sub, Wonderful Artistic Musician! Thumbs Up!
I've always loved this piece. Bach wrote this piece well after he wrote his E minor suite when he was in his early twenties that contains the vigorous final gigue. This sarabande is preceded by a fugue which is one of the most engaging pieces ever written for a fretted fingerboard instrument. The phrase "restrained magnificence" comes to mind when hearing this great music. BRAVO Goran Sollcher!
thanks a lot 🎶
Beautiful.
Just beautiful!
Bravo wonderful and majestic
