Technically perfect (with nice trills vintage Russell), played in the contemplative mood (prelude, fugue, sarabande) that this suite deserves and, judging from the position of the capodastro in the right key as well: C minor (instead of the usual A minor transcriptions). Is David Russell setting a new standard here, after the historic Bach recordings of John Williams and Julian Bream?

Julian Bream's impressive interpretation made me study the 997 prelude and fugue myself, John Williams's Bach suites are indeed the unsurpassed 'top' thanks to his superhuman technique and virtuosity, and Monno's 997 prelude and fugue (which I discovered last year) are gems. So let's say: a new standard for today (it *is* a brilliant and highly enjoyable interpretation by a master), also because of the combination with the beautiful setting in Portugal. As for sight-reading: I guess he does it as a memory help. The pieces are too difficult to 'sight read': you have to learn them by heart (own experience).

We used to have to go to live concerts to see anyone at this level play or watch the few VHS's we had of famous performances over and over. Coming back to classical guitar 20 years later and being able to watch lessons on youtube, epic performances and print free sheet music is like I time traveled.
To me, this interpretation really speaks to the heart. The gestures finely crafted in each phrase and subphrases. Really speaks to me like a beautiful prose or an epic poem.

Capo seemed dubious…then I heard it and it is unquestionably the right call. I just started learning this and will be starting over with a capo @ 3. amazing!
This was always my least favorite of the Bach lute suites until now. Its like I’ve just heard it for the first time. It took this marvelous performance to sway me. David Russell is an absolute gift to this world.
The recording quality is pristine…..just as good as if done in a studio environment….makes me wonder if it was done in a studio and edited in later. I don’t see a visible mike anywhere yet I’m sure it was a high end big diaphragm Neumann. The performance is perfect, especially since I love Bach.
I'm not sure about that. I seemed to hear a rising hiss in quiet sections as the automatic level control tried to make adjustments. Great performance though.

Agree! Although Galbraith's interpretation is also stunning. This is better than bream or Williams!
No point in using a capo unless the guitarist is playing with other people.

I personally don't like comparisons. If you like it then great! It is not a competition, imo.
I wouldn’t call it “a new standard” but definitely a new, and beautiful, beautiful approach.
