It’s sad they will try to get you like that. People trust and rely on the dealers to do what’s best for their vehicle, but if you don’t know what’s going on, they will get you with the okie doke. That’s why I do these videos, to try to inform people, and also to offer guides on doing things themselves. Whether it’s to save a buck, or just knowing you can trust yourself more than the dealer, the option is available. Thanks for the comment and watching.✌🏾
The only thing you need to remember about car dealerships is that their sole purpose is to make money for the owner of the dealership - period. I worked at a dealership for a period of time and honestly don't know how service managers and service writers sleep at night.
I get my car inspected as part of my $32 oil change/rotation from Goodyear, for my Toyota Matrix. They are pretty good at picking up issues. Dealerships are a ripoff. Thanks for pointing this out.
The vehicle usually gets put on a lift above head height to do the oil and filter change. So the technician does not need to take off the rim to inspect the brakes and struts they can see it from behind the rims. But you are right to have suspicions about conflicting information from one visit to another.
Kyle Ramos thanks for that info. I wasn’t aware that you could get a good view of the brakes and suspension from under the vehicle with the wheels still on. I’m about to be going in for the 36k maintenance so I definitely want to make sure everything is properly inspected before it out of the factory warranty period.
Darla Mix glad I could help. I often find myself just going with the flow, assuming they know best, and also have my best interest in mind. But that certainly isn’t the case.
After watching the Subaru 30,000 service 4 years ago. What happened to the Subaru at 60k and 90k? Our dealer told me that our new 2024 Subaru will need $1500 service at 30k. Of course I didn’t purchase a Subaru yet due to dealerships not being honest with information
So…I was getting mixed info on things like servicing the cvt oil. At first it was suppose to be lifetime, no service, then it turned to being go ahead and service. Now that you have asked, I will have to do an update video. lol All in all, I’m at 108k miles. Sill running strong. Around 100k I finally decided to service the cvt oil, gear oil, serpentine belt, and brake fluid flush. I also replaced the front Cv axles, as mine were bad. Not sure if it was regular wear and tear, or from off-roading or even doing the suspension lift. But that was the most expensive fix, at close to a $1000 doing it myself. I still love my Subaru and think it was a great investment. I would get another one. As for the dealer and services, I personally only did the free services. Once that was done, I did it myself for the same reason you stated. Crazy price for unnecessary work. If you get one, I suggest just being involved with the Subaru community and researching, because I don’t trust anything the dealerships say. So I go off of peoples experience and recommendations. Hope this was helpful.👍🏾
Anchor Subaru was charging $399 30k service, doing Oil/Filter change, rotate tires, engine/cabin air filter, Replace PVC value, replace front/brake differential gear oil and adjust parking brake (replace Brake Fluid is a 30k service which they are not offering) --- Now in the service manual for a 2018 Subaru Crosstrek 30k service should be --Oil/Filter change, rotate tires, engine/cabin air filter and replace brake fluid. This should cost around $200 to $250 for that service. The thing that pissed me off with the service advisor is that she told me that I was refusing the 30k service that is recommend from Subaru. I told her I am refusing Anchor Subaru 30k service, not the Subaru service manual 30k service. I added that if it was recommended from Subaru that I perform -Replace PVC value, replace front/brake differential gear oil and adjust parking brake. Then it would be in the manual. You have to "a la carte" your 15k 30k 45k and 60k service, so you don't have to pay for stuff that shouldn't be work on at that time. Inspecting the car fluids and the operation of the car should happen for free when you bring your car in for maintenance.
I agree with you. And what else sucks, is a lot of the time the service advisors no nothing about the vehicles.😒 I don’t know if this is new or if I’m just now noticing, but you can go into the MySubaru app and it tells you what should be done at each service interval. I think it’s new to help with all the misinformation going around.😒
I've been told that the 30,000 mile maintenance on my recent 2020 Outback purchase could end up around $1000! Changing all fluids. When does brake fluid need replacing every 30k? I should have checked out the maintenance cost before buying. Now I wonder if I decline any of the "recommend" services will my certified car no longer be certified? I have lots of questions that need answers or it's back to a brand we've found much more cost effective.
30,000miles is a big service, you do need to change the transmission oil if you want to keep your car in good condition. You should read the owner manual to know what service you need and save money for the major service. 30,000 miles need more then oil change. oil change is every 6000 miles, every 30,000 miles is major service. Don't blame the dealer. read the owner manual...
Not sure where you are located and what year your forester is, but my 2019 says to inspect these things at 30k miles, not replace. I currently have 110k miles on my 2019 and it’s running strong. If you look at your manual it never says replacement is required, except under extreme conditions.
Yeah, I never got the extra cost to rotate tires.I found out my local discount tires chain location does it for free regardless if you bought tires from them or not.So I went that route.
Right! It’s just something too little to not include. It would take 5-10 minutes tops to do it. Smh. But just like you said, I’ve been letting America’s Tires do the rotation.
You can get a maintenance schedule for your car on a pdf for free. Follow it and be specific in what you ask. The dealer will always overcharge and sell you service you don’t need.
Yea that’s why I never trust dealership and always take it to a mechanic I trust if it needs to be repair. Thanks for the info man I have a 2010 forester but looking into a 2019 forester.
Thanks! Exactly, you have to watch them. I love my 2019, but I've heard they are a bit sluggish compared to the previous turbo charged models. Just keeps me out of trouble. lol
@The Tattooed Ronin - FYI the 2021 Crosstrek Sport and Limited got the 2.5 engine of the Forester. My wife and I own both a Crosstrek and Forester both 2019 Limited trims. The Forester driver seat comfort is horrible. Probably because of my bad lower back. I have to use the lumbar support to the maximum setting. TBH, wish i had a WRX. good luck!
@@ivanfromtexas5858 thank you! Cross treks are awesome too. I was thinking of going for 2019 crosstrek at first but I just like the forester bit better because its a bit bigger. Both great cars. I love subarus since its great AWD and amazing daily driver. my 2010 forester has a lot of mileages on it finally starting to show signs of transmission problems so gonna upgrade soon.
The Tattooed Ronin - ahh gotcha, so you are a longer standing Subaru guy than i am, very nice. Yes, I love EVERYTHING about the Forester, especially the 2.5 motor and the AWD handling is awesome (we had never owned AWD vehicles prior to these two Subies), just dont like the driver seat, but its probably my back problems that just arent compatible with the seat, as I never had this problem on all the previous Toyotas i owned prior to Subaru. My WRX desire is the love of AWD on a more comfortable and sporty car, but probably mid life crisis talking. Haha. Good luck!
I took my Forester Sport in when it was past 30k. I also opted just for the oil change, as they quoted me over $900. Glad to see this video pretty much confirmed what I didn't need.
Rear Sight Apex man, just imagine how many people they are getting with that. Smh. I just hit 42,000 so I’ll be doing another update vid on a couple of days.👍🏾
Yeah you gotta love stealerships. They do anything to make a buck. Even if that means screwing over the customer. I’ll keep an eye out for when I need to get mine done.
I just bought my first subaru. It's a 2021 forester sport. I'm going to be adding a hitch and going to wrap the trim a different color. Not sure what else I might besides upgrading the tires and adding a rack. Might modify the hood for something a little more sporty. Who knows.
Congratulations🎉. Sounds like some nice changes. I’m ready to rewrap my trim also. Well actually ready for a complete wrap, but not sure if I’m ready to fork out that kind of money.😂 Also thinking about adding a winch kit. Well, like you, the list goes on.😂. So we’ll see what’s next. Enjoy!
Sorry to say but you bought the wrong car if you're going to tow Anything. They will only install a class1 hitch and then your transmission is Not designed for pulling anymore than itself. They say 2700lb Max.
The key thing is not to trust no one but the the Lord his self. I watch them and film it from a distance. My Subaru dealer have a drive through service place. Meaning off to the left and right they’re fixing the vehicles
I wish ours had a window to watch them work on it. But now with Covid, they're encouraging us to drop the car off and leave, which I personally like, cause I get a loaner, and don't feel like im sitting around wasting time. One dealer told me, they will do the inspection which will take about 4 hours, and if they find a problem, then they'll give me a loaner. Yeah not...lol
My experience is never trust the stealership. Their service department is designed to make money, even if your car doesn't need any of the said service items. Long term they will screw up your car so you will come back and buy another new car. Do it yourself! Maintain all your oil and other parts receipts in case of warranty issue.
I agree with you. Once my free services were up, I started doing all my service. I was suppose to do a vid about the 60k maintenance, where the dealer had added fees for everything, including vacuuming your car.😳 Of course the 60k was done by me also.😂
Bro, subie recommends changing differential fluid at 30K, transmission is 100K. The tire rotation is bogus for $40. That should go with oil change free.
JT Wu I’ve heard so many different things about maintenance, I don’t know what to believe.🤪 Thats coming from the dealers, owners, etc. This is the most rest my Sube has gotten since I bought it, so I plan on going thru everything to keep her in tip top. And I definitely agree that swapping the wheels, should be free. It takes all of maybe 10 minutes, while it’s jacked up in the air.
JT Wu I’m actually starting to get into doing it all myself. Trying to wait for the appropriate time, so I can do some vids. I’m long overdue for some vids.😒

Woah! Moto content too?!?! Nice! Dealership told me my rear brakes needed replaced at early miles, like 30K or so. Bought the rotors and pads, went to go do my brakes... 50% life left, EASY. WTF, dealership? Finally changed all 4 rotors and pads at 88K miles. YEARS later!
Lol yeah, but we’ve fallin behind on the moto content.😒 Yeah when I went to change my rear brakes like you, I found they still had quite a bit of pad left. But since I had already bought the pads, I went on and replaced them. At 48000, I was thinking the front should be do. Nope, still good. Lol. I hope I can get another 30k out of them like you.👍🏾
I just had the software update done when I brought my 2019 Forester Sport in for its 18,000 mile checkup. It has caused me no problems whatsoever and solved a big issue for me. Before the update the head unit kept losing radio channel presets every time I turned the car off. After the update, my presets are saved as they should be. FWIW, I use Apple CarPlay all the time and the update caused no problems with it either. I DO find that every week or so, CarPlay stops showing up when I plug in my iPhone, necessitating my rebooting the iPhone and the head unit. What a pain! But this behavior predated the update, so it’s not related to the update itself,
Marian Petrides I’ve heard a lot of complaints about the radio presets. I myself haven’t had that issue. But I also use Apple play the majority of the time, and rarely listen to the radio. Are you not getting Aha radio prompts?
Terry, I’ve never once had an Aha prompt. But I’ve never used Aha (or Spotify either) and I have not subscribed to Sirius XM-if that matters (shouldn’t but who knows?).
Marian Petrides that’s interesting, because I’ve never used any of those either. I had to download aha just so it could update and stop prompting me ever time I started the car.🤯
@@Lucrativesoldier Now that is truly weird. What does the dealer say about the issue? Or have you not asked because you're satisfied that you fixed it on your own?
Marian Petrides I haven’t spoken with anyone at the dealer about it. Doing the update, then deleting the app, took care of the problem, so I didn’t feel the need to take it in for it.
Do the CVT service bro. Doesn’t matter if you don’t tow. That oil breaks down as well and CVT s are a lot more delicate. Look into BG products and their lifetime protection. Perform your service every 30k on the CVT with BG and they cover up to $6000 on that CVT for the life of the vehicle. I have my forester on that bg warranty for engine and transmission and my sti is on the engine protection.
Evaca12 thanks, I appreciate the advice. I will look into BG. I have the extended warranty up to 100,000 miles I think already. But I know the good saying is, it doesn’t hurt to be safe, so that’s the route we’ll take. I’ll be doing that soon.👍🏾. Thanks again!
The CVT fluid doesn’t get contaminated with Hydrocarbons and heat. Changing it is only waste of money. The differentials oil needs to be replaced in 36k or 30k intervals.
That's almost as bad as an oil change shop pulling your dirty cabin filter to show you then wanting an extra $50 to install a new one when a new one costs $10. And no one wants this AHA crap. AHA just needs to go under and never return. AM/FM, Bluetooth, Aux, Satellite.... Those should be the only options on a radio now a days!
Bomber684 lol right! My female cousin came over the other day getting ready for a road trip. So she was like the dealer wanted charge me to do all this stuff, so she decided to come to my house and do it, and have me for back up. She did her brakes, and changed bad bulbs, and saved a ton of money.😂😎 And apparently AHA is apart oh Harmon Kardon, so that’s why we have it. But yeah, I avoid it because it’s a PITA. Just like you said, I’m good with usual.😂. Honestly all I really use is Apple play and Pandora.😂. As long as those work properly, I’m happy.😁
I just got a used 2019 forester sport bro. Question are you doing transmission flush on it for ever 30k now i have been hearing so many mix opinions on flushing transmission lol. I know the cvt is delicate so want this one to last.
Man, exactly! I haven't yet. They suggest checking it at 30K miles I believe. When I took it in for the 30K, they tried to charge me to change it, so I told them, if it needs to be changed, then we'll do it. After the inspection, they said it still looked good, and no need for change, so it didn't get done. If you login to "my Subaru" it will show you your maintenance schedule. Congrats on your new ride!
It bothers me that I can get my tires rotated for free at America’s Tires, but the dealership where I’m spending money at won’t do it.😒. I think small things like that is an easy way to improve customer service.
Are you planning on changing your cvt oil anytime soon? I've been reading up on cvts and how to make them last and one thing that keeps being recommend is changing out the cvt oil every 30,000.
jg1226 I’ve read the same thing. But I’ve also read that if you’re not towing often, you shouldn’t need to do it at 30,000 miles. And with the dealer telling me it looks good at this point, I font see a need. So I think I will keep an eye on it, and take it day for day.
By Grace Beauty the cost varies depending on where you live. But first 2 years or 24,000 miles is included. It should go in for service every 6,000 miles.
Struts at just 30,000 sounds unlikely. The Subaru recommended scheduled maintenance is $ expensive. I had them change "milky" differential fluid one time and like 13,000 miles later, said "milky" again. So I decided milky was NORMAL then and I waited. Either it was changed later at another 30,000, or so, or traded it off. My 2016 has just 42,000, I skipped 30,000. I shall have my independent mechanic pal do it for half cost of dealer. He has maintained many Subarus for up to 300,000 on some. I suppose dealerships make more profit from service and certainly a huge boost all the add on paint protector, seat protector and what not when new. I haven’t forgotten living on gravel and wanting plastic well arch protectors for the flying stones. Almost $500 !! I’ve been in manufacturing long enough to know 4 arch shaped pieces of plastic made once manufacturing capability is set up and going, costs far less…. $300+ for matching color plastic strips glued on the doors to protect from dings. I’m fussy on paint and pay that, but what a profit maker. I usually go for extended warranty too, it’s a gamble. I guess paying for peace of mind against some potentially very expensive repairs. But then again, the reliability of Honda Toyota Subaru, I wonder on skipping extended warranty. I drive little now days, they are bugging me to change fully synthetic oil after 8 months and only 2500 miles. I’m balking and waiting for close to a year, since it is fully synthetic. Unless cold winter got more condensation in it. But several long trips should warm that away ?? I don’t know for sure, but milky differential oil that soon just sounds suspicious.
I agree, you gotta watch them. Just dropped my dads ascent off for its 60k. I knew it was pretty extensive, so wanted to let the dealer handle it. Price $1300.😳. Ended up crossing most of the work off to do myself, and left the front and rear diff to them. Price is now $300. Now they have a sanitizing service that they try to throw in there, where they basically just vacuum out the inside of your car.🤔. Of course that had a price too. It’s getting ridiculous. I’ll be doing a vid on that soon.
I feel your pain Buddy.

I started using this chart for reference.

Terry Farmer try all star on Masi but bring your own filter and washer
JT Wu I’m actually starting to get into doing it all myself. Trying to wait for the appropriate time, so I can do some vids. I’m long overdue for some vids.😒

tl;dr "Wait a bit"
Lol yeah, but we’ve fallin behind on the moto content.😒
Yeah when I went to change my rear brakes like you, I found they still had quite a bit of pad left. But since I had already bought the pads, I went on and replaced them. At 48000, I was thinking the front should be do. Nope, still good. Lol. I hope I can get another 30k out of them like you.👍🏾
Thank you for these update videos! They are so helpful!
Colbs thanks for watching and commenting!
Nice video. With the CVT, if they recommend a fluid change I would do it. Peacefrom510 .
I take my Subaru to a specialized repair shop he works only on Subaru/BMW .
Check out MrSubaru1387 videos on CVT. No need to do anything to a CVT.

She did her brakes, and changed bad bulbs, and saved a ton of money.😂😎
And apparently AHA is apart oh Harmon Kardon, so that’s why we have it.
Terry Farmer thanks bro im do the same have them look at it. Thank you I got it in white I love it so far.
@@TheTattooedRonin No problem! Glad you're loving it. Im still loving mine 2 years in.
Inspection only takes one wheel off
It bothers me that I can get my tires rotated for free at America’s Tires, but the dealership where I’m spending money at won’t do it.😒.
No need for CVT fluid until 100k unless you are doing some serious off-roading or towing which is limited.
Don't let the dealer with huis dirty hand chaince the transmissionoil unles nessesary.
Dos more Harm than good
changing cvt fluid will void 100000 mile extended warranty.
How much is regular maintenance and how often?
By Grace Beauty the cost varies depending on where you live. But first 2 years or 24,000 miles is included. It should go in for service every 6,000 miles.
Do you have comments on?
Darla Mix yes, comments should be on.
Toyota.
😂I ❤️ my Subie!
@@Lucrativesoldier Terry!, You can get the same 20mpg in a 4runner ;) hahahhaha
