In this video we somewhat start a mini series within a series on fixing all the oil leaks that this car has starting with the valve cover gaskets.
First we talk about our first road trip we took in the car. Then we jump right into the valve cover gaskets where we find plenty of surprises. Some good and some not so good but overall the engine is looking better and better!

@@18890426 people need morals and great work ethic. Normal it start with management at the top and then trigger down to tech.
The Half moon plugs are there to seal the outside of the head, because when the head is made the cam bearings are bored it also bores the outside of the casting, which means the half moon cut has to be sealed.

I had a 2003 LS430.
The display went blank, and all my service reminders vanished.
After researching, I called the dealer. The control unit in the trunk would cost $2,000.
This control unit was really a DVD player.
After further research, I located a used one online for $125.
Installed it myself, and it worked perfectly.
It even came with updated DVDs with the new road maps.
I’m addicted to watching everything this channel has. It is so interesting and informative and just so satisfying and fun to watch. I own a 2017 LS460 with only 24k so watching this LS going through this transformation is even more interesting to me.
LS460 is a money pit.

I have a 2008 LS460 with 150k miles and only needed to replace the poorly designed control arms. With regular maintenance, this car is a dream to use on long road trips. I don't need a Rolls Royce. My LS rolls fine!
The control arm is fast moving part on LS460 just like brake pads on normal car. Laughable quality which marks a downhill for Lexus.
It's amazing that some Rolls Royce owners don't even appreciate the car, they just treat it as a status symbol.

I have all these ideas for improving ride quality (optimiizing suspension frequency, reducing unsprung weight, new tire technology that aborbs a higher assortment of road imperfections) but sporty firm ride with more road feel seems to be in these days as it's easier and cheaper to design.

The most I like in you is your patience while working, there are difficulties in fixing problems in this 600k Miles Lexus but you are doing it right and patiently 😊

A good tool to use with damaged connectors is a dental pic, that’s a must have for us in the electronics repair business. You can reach all round behind broken plastic to help remove it.

I learn a lot from watching these videos. It was good that you had the trip to see the new cars and get to drive some. As you would say, "Life is good'. Your level of patience is an example to us all.
I used one of your old videos when doing the valve covers on my own LS. Paid extra attention to ensure the correct orientation of those spark plugs seals. There was quite a bit of debate about it on the internet forums...Appreciate all the informative content you've posted over the years. It's helped me to restore my LS and hopefully enjoy it all the way to 600k!

My dad gave me his 2001 avalon xls as a gift when i started medical school two years ago. I self-taught myself and used your videos for help and just as a joy to watch while making repairs on the the avalon. its at 216k miles and still running well. i love these ls430 segments i picked one up and i been learning so much.
last weekend i spent it replacing my timing belt/water pump, and handling other maintenance jobs on my 05 ls430 with 200k miles. i used your timing belt video for reference and without it, and it being my first time doing it, i couldnt have done it without your video. it runs beautifully, thank you mate
Thanks for sharing and going into the great detail you do with this car. Many channels just show taking out and putting back the bolts. Your detailed explanation of each part and what to look for down to even the smallest details is awesome. Its the information it really takes to make the difference for a diyer to do an excellent repair vs a just ok repair that may need future attention.
Love my Toyota. Got an 08 Solara convertible for super cheap fixed it up to near perfect (no more leaks). It’s currently at 128k miles and has had the timing belt and water pump done at 100k. Nothing but classics and Toyota from here on out. Thanks for sharing all the knowledge.

I really enjoy watching certain other automotive repair channels with each of their quirks. The way they can entertain us by poking fun at their own level of professionalism all the while doing as good of a job as anyone's ever done. We'll call that junk food for now and I love it.
But as the Ytb algo dropped me here like a rock I got reminded that not only is it necessary to BE on your A game, (I just did that, sorry.) but to also be passionate enough about the trade to be the reference for how things are supposed to be done. When you're this good you don't need to entertain us to keep us tuned in. Watching the way you handle parts or the cars they're going in with the perfectly proper care is both eye opening and refreshing.

I about shit my pants when I saw how nice the cross hatching still looked, I remember about a year ago, I took apart a Jeep Liberty motor with 160,000 miles, and the cross hatch was completely gone. That is impressive, toyota. I guess that's why it's the only vehicles I buy. Love your work, brother, by the way. You're a true professional in every sense of the word. Amd, I’m right there with you! I am doing the exact same thing with my son’s 150K mile 05’ Lexus ES 330 by completely replacing all of the rubber parts (hoses, grommets, gaskets, etc.) suspension, brakes, and smaller parts both inside and out with OEM Lexus parts. The car runs like new, burns nothing and everything works. Thanks for sharing this project and your skills as I have watched you since you started in your garage and have learned many good habits on how to work on my Toyota and Lexus cars. Those half Moons serve a very important purpose. They provide clearance for a honing machine to hone the bearing surfaces for the camshaft during head manufacture.

Outstanding. I also enjoy large RWD sedans and also drive an LS430. I have driven 07 + LS460's and there are clearly advantages to the LS430 quality wise in my opinion. Toyota is a great company but something happened around '07 and beyond with many major car manufacturers, where the quality of many vehicles seemed to shift over to "value added engineering".
I had been looking at newer LS460's but I simply cannot find fault with my LS430 enough to want to replace it. So I have been keeping it up in the same fashion as yourself. I did the VC gaskets a while back as they were leaking in the same way. It came from Florida so it was rust free when I bought it about 6 years ago. There was actually a pristine seashell sitting wedged in the undercarriage that I retrieved when I was working underneath it, and the shell now sits on my desk.

CCN did this same, fine gasket work on my LS430 last year. At that time, I’d have loved to watch him do that work- but here it is!! Fascinating stuff. I know for some, this is a DIY job, but for me this is like Dentistry and Tax Preparation: there are some things worth paying for to have them done right the first time. Great video!

I like your attitude and attention to detail. A lot of mechanics don't care if a bolt or nut is missing. Hell, I've seen some idiots remove the belly pan and not bother to put it back. That's why I prefer to DIY whenever I can.

Owned a Toyota or Lexus since 1984. Love this channel. I have a 2018 LC200 that I want to drive as long as I can and a LC500-C that I just got. I would recommend replacing head light assemblies as part of the detail. Bringing back with compounding never lasts. It will make the car look new.

I recently found this channel and it's one of the best ive found. Since I bought my first car it has always been a toyota. I've got a 2008 Sienna Limited XLE FWD with 189,000 miles. The biggest problems I've had with it are the radio and the vacuum lines. Other than that I just keep up with frequent oil changes and she's treated us good for 15 yrs. Would love to keep her until 600,000 😂. Thank for all you do and I look forward to the future videos as I'm learning a boatload. May God Bless and keep you and your family well. Our next car will be a lexus as I'm getting ready to retire from the military and deserve some luxury and comfort. 😊

I love this series. I have an 01 LS 4439 w/ 164k miles. The car came from Connecticut and the clear coat is peeling and paint is rough but it is very mechanically sound. You showing how and why to do repairs and maintenance really helps me.

As a qualified toyota tech here in Aus - I’m a branch manager of a service /parts toyota location and I can relate to a lot of what you do - quality parts used on quality vehicles -lol . But my main reason for commenting is like you I like a large comfortable quality car - so I bought one a 2011 toyota century - so time for you to buy one - after seeing to rolls Royce drive - just more of the “Beer” budget .
I mean my wife doesn’t like the century - but hey my mk4 supra with 700hp isn’t her favourite either ,scares her.

Unfortunately here in the USA we cannot import vehicles less than 25 years old if they were not sold here when new. The newest Century we can get in 2023 is a 1998 model.
This model of century hardly changed from 97 - 2017 . So the 1998 is still a desirable model - I know they did a review on this Chanel recently

I have learned a lot from watching you. I'm a nurse and last year made the decision of buying a low mile 2019 Lexus Es 350 F Sport which I hope to keep running for a long long time. I definitely watch you for advise and pointers. I initially wanted to buy it and modify but NO SIR I may add a few cosmetic peices but the rest will be stock. Super nostalgic video for me. I've had 5 LS400 & LS430's as personal transport. Absolutely the best large limo/sedan for long distance cruising for comfort, cost, performance & longevity. If even better electric cars hadn't come along, I'd still be driving one.
I usually dont l like hour long videos in youtube, but this series is a must hour long videos, truly a treat to watch someone who is passionate about their work.
The half-moon seals exist because the head is line-bored with the cam journals fitted so that they are a precise match for the camshafts.
The seals block off where the tool has to go. They are on pretty much all overhead cam engines.
Keep up the good work. Enjoying the LS rejuvenation but would be interested on how much you have spent on parts so far. 🙂

Pretty sure the 'half moons' are due to the machining process used during manufacturing to bore out the bearings that locate the camshafts.
That I believe is the reason. However they lost them in the newer cylinder heads. Must’ve found a better way to machine them.

I though you said that you "weren't gonna go crazy" cleaning that valve cover"... HAH!! I knew you couldn't help yourself, it looks beautiful. I would like to do this on my 09 camry 2.4L, even though it does not leak, but am guessing there is no gasket, just sealer. It will turn over 200K next week, gonna replace the radiator myself, looking a little crusty at the bottom. My stomach was in knots when you peaked inside with the bore scope, glad everything was "OK".
Was that car meet by invitation only?? I just can't imagine them letting just anyone take that Rolls out for a drive on their own...Or, was the salesmen sitting in the back seat?
