- Here's a classic show from way back when I was part of Peter Gabriel's band. Sadly not much video exists from those tours.
Rockpalast was recorded live at Grugahalle, Essen, Germany on September 15, 1978.

It would be kind of sad and tragic had his solo career never taken off in the 80s but of course it did.
His first two albums are really solid an eclectic collection of good songs and a great band but they only sold about 100K copies each. People were beginning to forget him it seems.
Then with Melt and Security he reaches the art rock stratosphere. On the level of Bowie's Berlin trilogy. So unique and innovative but also commercially successful.
So and Us were also incredible albums and even more successful cementing his solo career as outstanding in it's own right. Incredible shows, unusual and creative set designs. The man is a legend!
Jerry was a great drummer for Gabriel's band back then!!!
Far more exciting and propulsive than any drummer that PG has worked with since, although they're all masterful drummers. Jerry was the best, and the PG band sound from "Plays Live" has never been bested!
Among greatest concert sets of 20th century.
And Sid plays some lovely guitar on "Solsbury Hill."
Gabriel's stage presence was always the essence of melodrama. His brain is from the 22nd century!
Timmy was an awesome performer on this tour and jerry Jerry Jerry your Drumming for This Band was just what the Crazy Dr. Diaper Needed lol

This is a gem. These guys were wild on stage! Peter was just a big explosive, creepy bowl of "uh- oh" back then.
"I worship Diana by the light of the moon,
when I pull out my pipe, she scream out of tune..."
It is important to note that PG never in any way tried to replicate classic Genesis or to be Genesis 2.0. Had he wanted to be an English prog act he would not have enlisted mostly American sessions musicians like Marotta-Levin-Fast. Only Robert Fripp was any kind of connection to that ascetic.
His music was entirely his own borrowing from Soul, funk with rhythms from around the world especially Africa. He was his own man and the world is better for it.
Jerry this is the most beautiful futurist rock ever, more elegant, more refined, more dreamy, more true, more essential, more profound. Thank you for existing. You have colored my life. I love you.

I love the almost punk rock vibe to this show. Saw him on this tour at the Tower Theater outside Philadelphia. My brother and I were in the front row of the balcony and during "Waiting For The Big One" he disappeared from stage and somehow materialized behind us in the balcony. Top notch band and great to see Tony Levin. My wife and I are going to see Gabriel this coming Saturday for her 70th birthday. I've seen over 100 concerts in my life, mostly in the 1970's, but that 1978 show is in my personal top 5.

Just watched a jazz performance Tony played five years earlier with Chuck Mangione. He had hair and looked so nerdy. I didn't recognize him except for his lanky build and how he held his bass.
