- Dune: Part 2 has finally hit theaters. While the sequel wraps up director Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the original Frank Herbert novel, it’s looking more and more likely that it won’t be the last movie in this series. For one thing, Villeneuve has been hard at work writing a screenplay based on the sequel book Dune Messiah. And for another, Dune: Part 2 just had the best box office opening since 2023’s Barbie, suggesting Warner Bros. will want to keep mining that precious, precious spice.
We’ve already broken down the ending of Dune: Part 2 and where it leaves characters like Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides and Zendaya’s Chani. But what happens next? What is Dune Messiah about, and why is it such an essential addition to Paul’s story? Why does it appear as though Villeneuve isn’t planning a straightforward adaptation of Messiah? We’re going to take a closer look at what happens next in the series. We’ll start out with the basics of Dune Messiah before getting into full plot spoilers at the end. Just beware of major spoilers for Dune: Part 2 and the book Dune Messiah ahead!

Although, things can change greatly between the movies and the book. It doesn't have to be a one to one adaptation.

The new dynamic between Paul and Chani will make their relationship more interesting for DUNE MESSIAH, they could briefly reconcile, making her death even more tragic.
Not in Denis Dune Part 3. No twins or even just a boy. No birth. Chani becomes leader of the Freemen, Alia, leader of the Bene Gesserit, Irulan becomes Emperor. Paul kills Jessica, then goes into the desert. No Duncan, Spacing Guild, Mentants or Face Dancers in Denis Dune 3. Lots of battle scenes…. The Prophet has spoken.
Chani will come around and forgive him - Paul says he has seen this in a vision already.

in the novels, she gives brith to 3, 2 of whom survive (one to VERY VERY old age), children with Paul. She does not really have the happiest ending though. Also one of their children truly fulfill the golden path which paul couldn't achieve due to being scared.

In the movie itself Paul says that Chani will come to see things his way in time. Therefore the main story of messiah should remain the same as the book more or less

Denis will keep the tension between them for a while, making their eventual reconciliation more meaningful and emotional. Her ultimate death in childbirth will be guts wrenching, a real tear jerker for those watch the film.
Funny bit of trivia - the guy who played Paul in the 2000 miniseries, Alec Newman, also voiced Adam Smasher in Cyberpunk 2077 and Edgerunners.
Always wondered what ever happened to Newman. Don't recall him being a big Movie or TV star
@@carolbriscoe9337 looks like he’s been doing a lot of video game voice acting and smaller TV stuff (like Shetland or Sister Boniface). And looking at this it seems he also voiced Blameless Marad in Horizon Forbidden West (not sure if he voiced him in the original - either it’s not on his IMDB page or I’m blind). Certainly hasn’t been idle since Children of Dune.
Given how risk averse Denis was re-working the first couple of movies for modern audiences, he is going to lose his mind trying to adapt Messiah

My guess is the story is going to take place near Paul end of rule. Where he choose not to become an emperor and he is going to reconcile with Channi and they are going to have children. Kinda like in the book but not accurate.
Dune Messiah will be incredibly difficult to make into a movie, partly because it is much more philosophical and political. The fight scenes which grab the average fan that doesn’t read the books won’t be as relevant.
Denis will probably have considered that and adjust the story slightly to make up for it. Besides, most of the people coming back for Part 3 will have watched the previous parts and anyone with a brain would realise that whilst the fights are awesome in Dune, the real thing that keeps people invested is how brilliant and mysterious it's world is and the next chapter of this personal story of Paul fighting against his own destiny, only to accept it at the end of part two. Now we get to see how he carries out this path he wants to see through and how it will affect the universe around him.

If this is really the end of Paul and Chani’s relationship, and they have no children, that could…complicate plans for further book adaptations.

Denis has stated that he wants to stay faithful to the overall story of Herbert so he will ultimately figure out how to work the kids in somehow

Irulan is gonna give birth to the baby Leto that died in the book & probably will die. Chani will give birth to the twins that end up taking over for Paul. Just a thought

Denis is a huge fan of the books. He will not alter things that much. Paul and Irulan were not a real couple. Just in name. He would not give Paul children by Irulan. Makes no sense.

The current movie is "Part 2" cos it's the latter half of the first book, Dune. The next movie won't be Part 3. It will be the next book, Dune Messiah.

There's a time jump in the novel that wasn't in Dune Part 2. This compression to a 6 or 7 month period (at a guess, based on Jessica's pregnancy) doesn't give Chani and Paul the time to bond they get in the book.
Chani will likely come round, though the theory of her being the leader of the rebellious Fremen is attractive.
The movie showed a deeper bond that the books described. Chani was very much in the background in the book. So, no such bond was written. Herbert let us use our imagination.

Part 2 already had too many deviations from the book. Hopefully Messiah gets back on track and is more faithful to the material like part 1.

So if they did change you can just see it was one of the different timeline Paul saw and that fine. It hasn't gone onto the golden path yet.

Duncan Idaho aka Jason is cloned to get close to Paul. There's the fight with space gelled, the love fight between empire daughter and desert tears 😭, and the great house will separate Paul from the desert people and the battle with Paul's mother, sister and the witches 🧙♀️

There is going to be a part 3. Is being done now. Based on Dune Messiah. Herberts 2nd book of the series.
Part 3 will be a setup for Part 4. Just like how Part 1 was a setup for Part 2, and Part 2 a setup for Part 3.

Does anybody else see the similarities between Star Wars and Dune Messiah?
1. There was a set of boy/girl twins in both.
2. The mother dies in childbirth in both.
3. A main character goes into the desert. Paul after being blinded, and Obi-Wan watching over Luke.
4. There's force-sensitive people that lead normal people.
Literally everyone. Star Wars took a lot of inspiration from Dune.

It's the other way around actually. Star Wars was inspired by Dune. The original novel released in 1965. Much of Star Wars is inspired by Dune. Tatooine was inspired by Arrakis, Tusken Raiders inspired by the Fremen, Force was inspired by the Voice. Warhammer 40k was also greatly inspired by Dune. Of course, Dune didn't get its first screen adaption until David Lynch's Dune (1984). Star Wars first released in 1977. Dune was largely considered unadaptable due to the book being largely a slow burner focused heavily on internal monologues and conversations. Sort of see that in Denis's Part 1 and Part 2 with Part 1 not having a lot of action, and Part 2 being full on guerilla warfare from start to finish.

Because the movie's almost three hours long and they have to cut some stuff out. Feyd Rautha was cut out of the first movie to be saved for this one
They didn't 'leave out' Alia, just changed it to make more sense. Paul & Chani's child wouldn't have worked with the shortened timeline & is also not particularly important to the story.
Question, how many parts are there?
6 books
The first two parts cover the first book. The main series, not including all the spinoffs and prequels, has a total of 8 books with the last two being divisive since they weren't written by the original author, who died shortly after the release of the sixth. The 7th/8th were written by his son following his notes but many people, myself included , consider the 6th book to be the ending, albeit a very open ended ending. Yeah it's complicated lmao
