It was long overdue. The A330 was probably the best choice for the RCAF, made even better that the type is operated by many allies and the plane is still in production. A far cry from the former A310s that started out with the former Canadian airline WardAir.
The A310s were originally purchased by Wardair They became ppart of Canadian Airlines after it boughtWardair. when CP needed help, the government publicly refused to bail CP out but behind the scenes , purchased the 310s to be given to military and theybwere renamed to make it less onvious where they came from. I suspect the government was hoping to get Air Transat’s 330s but when AC pulled out of purchase agreement, government had to start looking elsewhere for 330s. (hence delay).
@michaeldunham3385 True, but aging jets parked outside still have the ordinary corrosion issues. The A330 has a lot of brackets holding wing to body fairings that tend to corrode badly and Airbus is a bad parts supplier. It usually ends up with MROs making their own brackets, while Airbus takes multiple days to certify them based on information from an e-mail.
For those wondering why the RCAF didn't go with the A330neo it's because 1) the RCAF operates on a shoestring budged, so second hand A332s is all it could realistically afford, and 2) the A330neo MRTT isn't even certified yet and only exists on paper.

Maybe this should be dubbed as VCC-200, in the way VC aircraft naming does for VVIP transport does (eg. @jimmyjiang3413 Not at all. There is currently only 2 Polaris in all passenger configuration. None of them have ever been VVIP because we don't need a VVIP aircraft. The VIP fly on any of the Polaris, and very likely any of the CC-330 alike. The ideal aircraft should separate MRTT from true dedicated VVIP aircraft, maybe one day just 2 A330MRTT not enough due to resource allocation between strategic airlift and aerial refueling and VVIP transport. In this regard, Canada shall and should rebid VVIP aircraft contract, separate from those A330s, and maybe a second hand B747-8i or brand new B787 VIP would be necessary. Maybe this should be dubbed as VCC-200, in the way VC aircraft naming does for VVIP transport does (eg. VC-25), and add some A321XLR modified for narrow body Air Force One type in case bigger ones cannot be accommodated in some airports and airfields.
Not all of the aircraft are getting converted to MRTT. A few will remain in full passenger configurations similar to the current CC-150 fleet.
@@shenherm But if this is not enough, as they only took 2, a rebid for dedicated VVIP aircraft would be necessary, for mission allocation efficiency reasons.
@jimmyjiang3413 Not at all. There is currently only 2 Polaris in all passenger configuration. None of them have ever been VVIP because we don't need a VVIP aircraft. The VIP fly on any of the Polaris, and very likely any of the CC-330 alike. One or two of the CC-330 will likely be fit with a small bedroom/office in the back and preferred for VIP movements over other aircraft, but the idea is to have flexibility rather than dedicated VVIP which cannot be used for anything other than political private jets.
@@shenherm But it may not have enough privacy and security of true VVIP aircraft, as where there may be more secure communications and resistance to a given nuclear blast. PMs and royal family are truly VVIPs and some sort of extra dedication would be necessary.
@@jimmyjiang3413 We have never had a VVIP aircraft and simply don't need one.
Now the PM can burn even more fuel on his many vacations in between lectures about our carbon emissions
get a brain
@@alpearson9158 I do have a brain. The a330 burns significantly more fuel and emits significantly more CO2 than the A310 it's replacing. But please turn your thermostat down. You're killing the planet.
@alpearson9158 is he wrong???
@@153eddy We expect our PM to fly to conferences and to go one trade missions. He requires a plane to do that. So he is wrong.
@@153eddy yes the a330-200's are far more efficient than the a310's

turdo only needs a hot air balloon for travel. He supplies the fuel, but no chance he will pay carbon tax
go play on any highway available
The name is CANADIAN AIR FORCE --Royal was dropped many years ago!
Nope. Royal Canadian Air Force was re-established under the previous Government
Its been the Royal Canadian Air Force again since 2011. A reversal from the stupid naming of "Air Command" that came with unification. And it was a welcome and popular change.
Really… I don’t think so.
@@avroarchitect1793Yes PET did that in 1968. Shame shame shame.
Good jet for Pierre. Just need to get Justin stink out
been waiting decades for new fighters for the rcaf and vessels for the RCN, but of course it takes no time to get the PM a new jet...
