    2:03 There's a reason why the Republic of Indonesia uses a 737.
Indonesia is pretty much known as the largest archipelago country in the world. Therefore, the president do need a dedicated aircraft to get around the country. The thing is, most airports in Indonesia can only handle narrow body jets (such as the 737 and A320). Most domestic flights in Indonesia, especially to non-metropolitan areas is usually served by propeller-powered aircraft (with the ATR72 being one of the most popular one). Thus the presidential aircraft is kinda limited to a narrow body such as a 737. Indonesia does have airports that can handle wide body aircrafts, but almost all of them are located in West (such as Jakarta and Surabaya in Java, Medan in Sumatra, Batam in the Riau Islands) and Central Indonesia (such as Balikpapan in Indonesian Borneo, Makassar and Manado in Sulawesi, Denpasar in Bali). Airports in East Indonesia can only handle narrow bodies.
The 737-800 callsigned "Indonesia One" owned by the State Secretariat and operated by the Indonesian Air Force was put in service since around 2014. Before then, the president usually gets around on the national carrier Garuda Indonesia Airways.
Besides the 737, there's also a 777-300ER leased by Garuda Indonesia Airways. This one is very rarely seen in Indonesia. The 777 is only used on long-haul travel such as to the US. The 777 was leased by Garuda Indonesia due to the president was attending the ASEAN-US Summit held in Las Vegas. The 737 is considered inefficient for this trip due to it has to stop 3x to refuel. The plane actually uses an old livery of Garuda Indonesia used in 1969. The livery includes a red lining from the nose to the tail with the word "garuda" on the tail and "indonesian airways" on the body. But for the presidential aircraft, the "indonesian airways" was changed to "REPUBLIK INDONESIA" while maintaining the "garuda" on the tail to signify that the aircraft is owned by Garuda Indonesia.

The German Government Planes are all part of the German Federal Defense Ministry Special Squadron. This Squadron - which is btw still sitting on the Airport of Cologne/Bonn and not in Berlin - operates a whole bunch of aircrafts. The most known are three A 340-300, named "Theodor Heuss" after the first President of the Federal Republic of Germany, "Konrad Adenauer" after the first Chancellor and Kurt Schumacher after the first Opposition Leader. "Theodor Heuss" is usually used by the German President (yes, we´ve a President), "Konrad Adenauer" by the German Chancellor and "Kurt Schumacher" as a replacement aircraft. The first new A 350-900 is now the new "Kurt Schumacher". This new aircrafts were ordered directly from Airbus after the public embarressment that Chancellor Merkel had to use an Iberia flight to reach the G20-summit in Buenos Aires because none of the three aging A 340 were able to fly at the time, while the German Foreign Minister was sitting somewhere in Africa unable to return to Germany. They´re all former Lufthansa aircrafts and very aged.
The Special Squadron also operates an A 310-300 equipped with an economy class configuration (two other A 310 were just fleeted out and all of them are remainings of the GDR-Interflug, built in 1989 and joint the Squadron shortly after German Reunification), a couple of a little bit newer A 319-100 ("only" in their 20ies and also former Lufthansa aircrafts), now in a special configuration which allows it to change them quick between a Business and a Hospital configuration - and also a couple of smaller Gulfstream Business Jets.
And btw.: Most of the aircrafts of the Special Squadron are painted in the usual grey Air Force colors. Only the A 340, some few of the Gulfstreams and now the A 350 have a white livery with a stripe of the German national colours Black-Red-Gold and the words "Bundesrepublik Deutschland" (Federal Republic of Germany). It was only President Johannes Rau back in 1999 who ordered this new livery to them to show that a member of the German Government arrives with them and not a combat mission.

I really love the 1962 livery for AF1 and would hope it is not changed. I think the size of the government transport should probably have more to do with the size of staff, guests and media that accompany the leader. Yes, the leader needs to work and all that, but you really don't need a 747 for the president's office and stateroom. Smaller countries will not require a much space and consequently use a smaller aircraft. Remember also that the President flies in his own helicopter and rides in his own car no matter where he goes. All of this has to be moved to the size before AF1 arrives. I think it takes two C5's do it. November 22 1963 changed everything. So, in the case at least of the US moving the President is profoundly expensive. It might be somewhat less when they go to their personal home/retreat as that might already be set up at the other end.

It cant be changed (no matter what any says/thinks) unless its first approved by a vote in the house. Thankfully I think that the chances of that ever happening are slim to none - especially because the lineage of the current design and who it was designed for. Also there is a mandate that says the Presidential airplane needs to be a 4 engine aircraft for "safety" reasons. While I agree it does not need to be a 747 now, this was done in the past due to reliability fears.

Some added info as to why some countries have fairly large planes, or fleets. I will use Germany as an example because I am German.
The German government uses a number of different planes, on top of the A340 / 350 there are a number of Global 5000, Airbus A318 and A321. All are run by the German Air Force and maintained by Lufthansa.
Even the smaller planes have large range and are often used for long travels by members of the government. The choice of plane depends on the size of the delegation, the duration of the stay and the importance of the passengers. This is not an exclusive service only for the head of state. The reason why government officials use VIP travel instead of commercial is mostly to be time efficient and flexible in their schedule. A lot of events in the political world happen in odd places, so this usually pays off.
The reason to have a widebody jet as top of the fleet is mainly to allow to use the time aboard for work. The ability to bring a large delegation (it is very common for German journalists to be invited along, for instance) and representation are also a reason.

Bigger is not always better when it comes to presidential jets. I reckon the reason why France opted for a mere A330 is because France's territory is the most widespread over the globe, but the airports are not always able to welcome huge quad-jets. I'm thinking for instance about Mayotte, Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, some islands of French Polynesia... Macron often needs to go far, the A330 represents an amazing option for his needs.
